  • If you're thinking of moving to NYC in 2021 during a pandemic, I asked a handful of people (who have been living in NYC their whole lives) for advice for anyone wanting to move here in 2021. So, this is about as honest as it gets. This is advice for the average-joe moving here. Everything is practical and focused around the current global pandemic and it's effects on the city so far and what they predict will change in the coming year along with what will stay the same. Idk guys, perhaps this will keep you from having to make a "what I wish I knew before moving to nyc" list. Moving to new york during pandemic is stressful af... so I hope this helps all of you headed east 💋

    Ive been doing so much research recently on moving to nyc.. It's been a dream of mine for at least 5 years, because its where my industry is clustered, and I even lived at Columbia summer of 2019 for a post-college program. With rent prices and my housing situation here in Oregon right now, its really just looking like the right time to move. It's not necessarily that I'm scared of moving, but I'm scared of the process! ILOVE NEW YORK BABYYYYYY. Such great tips that can be applied for moving to any big city in 2021. So true about the price difference especially locking in the lower rent price and waiting for things to return to some normalcy. AND YES your point about transportation being a non-negotiable for you, ME TO! I'm about a 8-10 minute walk from the metro station right now and that is easily the max I can ever do *sorry not sorry*. Door to door to my office is 20 minutes total and I would not change that for anything!! I hate commuting LOL. I used to do a much longer commute years ago and I swore it took off 5 years of my life.. AND OMG THE TJS'S GIRL SAME!!!!! I used to live 3 minute walk to a TJ and I miss it sooooooo mucchhh!!!!!😂😅😆 Anyway, have a good New Years Chelsea, can't wait to see your content in 2021!!!

      That's great you're coming back! After being here for 8 years I'm sure you will be able to notice all the changes. You're totally right tho, not all change is bad! • @ChelseaCallahan
      @ChelseaCallahan  3 года назад +7

      Yes you're totally right! I think where I was going with that was there are lots of temporary living options available until you find a job. Subletting a room with roommates is super common (which usually doesn't require credit check & proof of income), but it all comes down to exactly what you want and what you're comfortable with especially with covid! I hope that helps

    I’m planning on moving to NY at the beginning of next year and have a visit planned early December for a week to check out the city. I’m staying in Brooklyn since that’s where I’m looking to move. I know you mentioned the trains are not always working and in Northern Brooklyn the J and M lines sometimes can even freeze. If you’re someone who has a car, is it worth it bringing it to NY if you’re looking at areas such as Greenpoint/Williamsburg? Or even if you’re looking at other neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc. if you have a car, what are your thoughts on bringing it with you to the city?
    I work in a field where being late really isn’t an option and have options lined up as far as work goes. I really really love NY and am coming to visit again because I want to see what it’s like during the pandemic as well as look at the neighborhoods where I’m considering moving to. I definitely don’t want to make a commitment to something without knowing whether or not it feels like home to me. I am legit MISERABLE where I’m at right now (Texas) and I’ve wanted to move to NY my whole life. I’m lonely in Texas and know that NY is a very different environment as far as people go but I feel confident enough to go out and meet people there as opposed to here.

    LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!

    So thinking of moving to NYC from Chicago. In Chicago I live in River North and have a garage in my townhouse. I’ve noticed that the townhomes in NYC do not have garage parking. Question: what do families with kids do regarding car transportation since most townhomes do not come with garage parking.

    hi! i normally don't post comments on videos but i really enjoyed your tips, i thought they were really thoughtful and made me even more excited to move?? i do have a few questions.. the first of which being that if you're moving from out of state as i am (georgia, yikes) do you have any particular tips for people like me? i was thinking to sublet an apartment in brooklyn for a month, which would give me time to do more apartment viewings, explore, and get to know the area, but do you have any other suggestions? also, you mentioned someone who didn't quite secure a job in NY yet but was planning to move with a huge savings.. I've been doing the same but how much would you suggest saving? the way i've been calculating it is like if my rent were $850, I should have like 10x that amount? not sure lol thanks for the tips! *subscribes*

    • @ChelseaCallahan
      @ChelseaCallahan  3 года назад +1

      hi there! exactly what you suggested is what I would suggest-- subletting to buy yourself time so you can be here in person to view apartments/secure a job. The bigger the savings the better, I would suggest around 10k if you don't have a job lined up and want to be comfortable! That would cover a couple months rent, potential broker fee, security deposit, food/transportation when you arrive and then some. You have a great instinct, and planning ahead as you are will make the transition so much more enjoyable!!! good luck! x

Yeah! come to live to this city and wake up one day homeless ! The dream is over... Smart and professionals are living New York...If you are rich and talented you still have to quarantine, get vaccinated twice and wear a mask...Even if you have the Excelsior Pass... New York will never be the same...dirty subways with rats, most of the business closed, scarcity of jobs...nasty paranoid people who just stick inside their departments with their so called Facebook friends (A perverted illusion of a kind)... Small apartments, selfish and narcissistic roommates, The city with the highest taxes and homeless and crime ever ... Come an enjoy your American dream, sorry! I plan on moving to NYC in August, as I have a job lined up for mid August in Manhattan. I’m a recent graduate so my last year tax returns clearly don’t show that I make 40x the rent. However my income from this new job will be 40x the rent. My biggest anxiety about moving into the city is not being approved for an apartment because of this. Are landlords understanding of this situation? I’ll clearly be able to afford the apartment once I’m making this new income but don’t have the documents to prove it besides my job contact. Please let me know if you have any advice on this! Thanks so much!

      I don’t have direct experience with this, but I’ve heard making sure you have a letter from your employer stating the salary you will be making it should be enough! Hey Debbie! I'm sorry COVID messed up your plans to move to the city. It's definitely true about escalating crime. I'm not able to live in an expensive area either, so I just take the normal safety precautions and I haven't had any issues during the pandemic times. I would say don't let it keep you from coming, but just be especially diligent about finding a street to live that is well lit, a building/unit you feel safe in, and building management you can trust, mindful traveling after dark etc. especially during these times. I hope this helps a little bit, good luck xx
