Rich might be the only person in the media to get it right about the Jag's WR situation last year. Kirk was 100% the best and most reliable receiver on the team. Any time Ridley was asked to be the #1, or really clutch in any way, he fell short.
I’m glad Brockman continually rails against overpaying QBs. I 100% agreed with him about Daniel Jones and I agree with him about Lawrence
In truth Daniel Jones getting overpaid was an easy call, it was pretty much a head scratcher for everyone except for those in the Giants mgt though they had their guy. However, I do agree with you , plenty are overpaid, but a lot of that has to do with strategy, pay them early for example is a commonly used plan so that you dont have to pay more later, cough Dak, cough cough.
Agreed, but here's the issue: worst case, Lawrence has a mediocre year. Guess what, he's still getting that big contract, even as the 20th best QB, only now it's a year later and more expensive. I don't think he's necessarily the guy, but even after a bottom 13 year, the front office will convince themselves he still can be. Even if we would let him walk, they won't. So might as well pay him now. I mean, we're entering an era where pretty soon nearly half the QBs in the league will be making $50 mil. Hopefully the trend will correct by GMs going back to the draft, or the league will step in and make changes. Because the thought of someone like Dak demanding a quarter of the cap is sad.
big time
heres what happens. jacksonville doesnt pay Lawrence and he goes to another team and plays lights out.
@TheOneZenMusic 20th best qbs don't get near top of the market money outside Daniel Jones 😂 baker Mayfield contract is usually what happens for qbs in that 14-20 range granted lawerence has a higher ceiling
I think Baker Mayfield is the best recent comparison to Trevor Lawrence. Drafted 1 overall to a historically bad franchise, a Horrific initial coaching situation, 1 worthy playoff win by year 3, made the mistake of playing injured for half a season which skewed the average fan's view of their talent
Agreed
Except the jags had a great roster and lawrence choked every yar
@@Dr-puppenstein is their roster really all that great? name me their blue chippers from last year ... josh allen? is there anyone else? And we know they weren't good his first two years they had back to back number 1 picks for a reason.
"Overreaction Monday -- ON A WEDNESDAY" 😂😂
Hi John
@@411NOWtf
Rich can the Cincinnati bengals win the Super Bowl this year
@@411NOW hi yourself!
AFC Central! Good one Rich. Going wayyyy back
I caught that too, pretty funny.
What a throwback lol
Rich has never met a starting NFL quarterback he wouldn't overpay.
He's the guy that banged the drum for Kyler Murray for three straight months.
Exactly!! It’s gotta be an interview/agent agreement. Like, if you say all my clients deserve what they’re asking for on air, we’ll come on your show whenever you want
Hit it. Good to have you back, Richard and Christopher!
Some team will definitely rotate QBs. Draft one in rounds 1-3 and another in 4-7 EVERY year. Then dump each guy after his rookie deal is up - or maybe franchise once, depending on timing. Then spend bucks on proven free agents. SF kinda did it (got lucky), but spending 25% of your cap is not sustainable.
I'd be suprised if the Patriots get much more than 3 wins tbh
Me too!
It’s so nice to see them at the bottom of the league
Personally, I think the bar is pretty damn low when "shown enough to take them to the playoffs one year" is the rational for a $50+ million contract.
Plus they needed two collapses to get that far
Brockman on point with his hilarious delivery lol
Quite frankly if owners weren't so desperate to win then no qb would make as much/more than Patrick regardless of increasing cap space or market value. They could make qbs go on a prove it year and show that they're worth 45m+ a year and if they aren't than cutting them a 35m deal and having space to put a team around them is the best move for teams. For example in my opinion (WHEN he's healthy) Joe is deserving, Lamar is as well and some others. That may be a hot take but giving Daniel jones Trevor Lawrence and some other qbs these very expensive contracts when they haven't been able to show you they got that "IT" factor to win despite adversity than they not worth it 🤝🏻
I look at New England's schedule and I give them 4-13, tops.
Agreed. I think they beat the titans and maybe steal a couple trades within the division and maybe steal one from someone like Jacksonville, Chicago, or Arizona.
Chiefs will probably start 4-1. They'll lose to either the Bengals or Ravens, but not both, then beat the Chargers, Falcons & Saints. The reason we're being forced to suffer through watching the Jets so much comes down to one thing: TV eyeballs. New York is the biggest TV eyeballs market in the US. That's why we get both NY teams, Chicago, & LA teams every year on primetime, whether they suck or not - TV eyeballs. That's it.
Lawrence hasn’t proven anything in NFL whatsoever
When I watch Jags games, he looks like the problem as often as not.
I totally agree with you but if you're the GM that 'fires' him and he then goes on to a great career...I can see why they're stuck either way. I wouldn't want to be the guy making this call.
I really hate how much of a cushion he gets and Fields got none of it (yes, I'm a Bears fan and hated that we got rid of him).
1. Lawrence had Urban Meyers his first year, so of course that was a disaster. Fields had a lame duck HC/GM in Nagy/Pace that drafted him to save their jobs yet didn't do ANYTHING to game plan for him and his skills.
2. Lawrence got hurt last year and regressed. Everyone gets hurt. Fields got hurt and no excuses for him.
3. Some people will say that Lawrence has a playoff win and all that. He also plays in one of the worst divisions in football in the AFC South (now they're turning into a tougher division, but his first 3 years they were a joke) and has 1 playoff appearance.
I'm with Brockman on this one. Make him play out the rest of his contract and either tag him if you can't get a deal done or pay him an appropriate contract. Historically, once you overpay a QB this massive amount of money, the team suffers as a whole. I understand that Mahomes keeps winning with his massive contract, but he's the exception, not the rule. Look at the Giants and Packers/Jets for example, over-paid their QB so now there isn't enough to go around for the other positions. Brady had it right and look at the Patriots dynasty during that time.
@@oboecoejust because lawrence is overrated slightly doesn't mean fields is anywhere even close to mediocre. Dude is a bust and hasn't improved at all the entire time he's been in the league😂
I just saw a graphic the other day comparing Lawrence to, of all people, backup QB Gardner Minshew. Over the same period of time (2023 season where he filled in). And their numbers were stunningly close.
Keith Millard was the teammate lol (I had to google it)
58 td's and 72 turnovers is not worth that amount of money. If Lawrence is worth $50 mil a year, Minshew is worth the same...
Geno Smith has 53 TDs and 20 ints over the last two years and only got paid 25m a year.
If KT and Burns combine for 25 sacks they have both had their best season ever. The idea that they can get to 40 is laughably absurd.
Combine KT, BB & Dexy over 36.
They are a nice duo but there are at least 5 better duos in the league especially when it comes to sacks.
As a Browns fan, I agree with Chris that Watson is under pressure. Rich is right that Watson isn’t going anywhere, but if he underperforms this year, he’s going to be out of the league the day after his contract expires barring an immense 2025 season - like AFC Championship win kind of season.
Lawrence is coasting off ideals…. He’s average.
Didn't Blake Bortles get to a conference championship? Guess that means he should still be the starter in Jacksonville, eh?
I don't know why everyone talks about Brian Burns like he's an all-pro 20 sack DE, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.
He reminds me a lot of peak Chandler Jones, a very good (maybe not elite, but VERY good) player on a very bad team who performs well in spite of bad surrounding talent, annual coaching changes, and constant organisational dysfunction.
Thanks for putting McDermott on the hot seat rich. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? Come on now
My favorite segment. Lol
Basketball is cool and all, and I've been enjoying the playoffs, but even in the off season of the NFL, the best sports content remains about football. These podcasts are super duper.
There's a small city in one of the Carolinas, or Georgia I think, where everyone uses golf carts to get around instead of cars. There's a Tom Scott video about it.
And the Ravens also have seven standalone games, since they play the Steelers on Saturday to make up for short weeks.
"Most golf carts per capita"
😅 gotta love rich
UNCLE ELDER-_RICH IZ "DEBATERZ" EVOLUTIONARY ART IN MOTION 💯 🔥 ✅️
The real overreaction on Trevor Lawrence is any hypothetical immediately deters the fact that he would be a Jets quarterback, if not a Jag. I hope Trevor is at least a 10 year man in this league
I would say Daboll has to be on the hot seat as well.
Shouldn't the single season sack record for teammates go to Gastineau and Kleco? They had 40.5 sacks combined in 1981, the only teammates to at least 20 each
Chiefs will be
3-0
Thanks Chris ❤
Rams just paid Stafford after the super bowl. Now he’s 36, older and closer to retirement.
yep but when you have TWO game changing receivers and improved OLine
They traded 2 first round picks for him. They don’t care about paying him. Don’t sleep on the Rams -a Bears fan
Stafford is a proven top 10 qb qb age is irrelevant with how much protection the league gives qbs
Need new rock music - Television Supervision. Got that kickoff energy that no other bands like to do anymore. Bring back rock n roll
"You did research?!?" 😂
I completely agree, do not pay TLaw
Rich is a lot better on this pod than he used to be. Less mugging for the camera and hamming it up...
Yo production crew; turn up the ISO on their cameras, they look too dark
You two make it look easy. sheesh.
Okay guys, great job....
A few observations:
#1. The last head coach to coach out the final year of his deal, to my recollection, was Jason Garrett of The Dallas Cowboys.... And we saw how well THAT worked out... which is the problem with having Jerry as your GM.... He does these things... This is like taking out a large caliber h&^dg&n and shooting yourself in the upper thigh..... It's not productive, it's not good, it accomplishes nothing..... So, to REPEAT that exercise, really tests the bounds of believability....
#2. I love how Rich just "assumes" the Jaguars "have" to give Trevor Lawrence $50 million a year..... Now, part of me wonders, Rich is such an insider, what does he know, that he won't say??? Is Lawrence's Agent privately saying "my guy gets 50 or he walks???" Where to me, if the Jaguars said look, 4 years, $168 million, $135 million fully guaranteed.... How does he say no??? That's more than anyone else is going to pay him.... Plus you're in a great situation, Florida, from a tax standpoint, you're going to keep a lot more of the money than you would in say, ohh, New Jersey, or Los Angeles..... I don't know how you say no. If your agent tells you not to sign that, he/she is basically committing malpractice..... You're 1 play away from being the next Alex Smith.... It'd sure be nice to have $135 million guaranteed....
It is really hard to have pressure when watson had a fully guaranteed deal no matter what happens he gets all of that
Hey Rich there is no lo 10:50 nger an AFC CENTRAL, but I understand. You have been doing this since there was an AFC CENTRAL.
How many QBs have been franchise changing in the last 20 years?
Lawrence is a damn good QB. He played through an injury on his throwing shoulder. They collapsed because he wasn’t healthy but he still played.
he is a top 10 QB
The Jets getting all those prime time games is a matter of demand. The guy who makes the schedule said he talked to all of their affiliates and advertisers and they all wanted to see the Jets with ARod.
Even if they somehow lose 3 straight to start, the chiefs will still 3 peat or make the afc title game
Absolutely no way 3peat. They lost sneed and rice
Patriots could be anywhere between 10-7 (extreme best-case) and 0-17.
Denver should absolutely be one of the hot seats
Cmon Brockman, ask the Brownies how your "back to the draft for a QB" strategy has paid for them.
To be fair they overpaid a QB when they had a better one on the roster they let go.
(I completely made this up but it sounds right)
I think the Jets primetime games are influenced by the Giants home games. The algorithm can't put the Giants and Jets at home on the same day, so more primetime games end up popping up.
Well the 2016 Chefs lost to the Seahawks at home and then lost to the Rams in LA. The 2001 team lost to the Raiders at home and then lost to the Giants at home as well. So that would be the last time the Chefs started the season with 2 home games in a row and lost both games.
Inflation is so bad we gotta pay QBs 10x as much for the same job they always had to do.
Inflation?
This is the worker sticking it to the man instead of the corporate greed milking the consumer.
Rich with the AFC Central throwback
Let's Go!
I don't see the Pats getting a win until November.
How are you blaming McDaniels for the dolphins. The first playoff game tua had a season ending injury, and the second one tua can’t play the cold. This is other QB, not the coaching
You know honestly as a Giants fan who doesn’t think Brian Daboll should be on the hot seat or being anywhere close to being fired after this season. If Daboll’s on the hot seat why is Kevin O’Connell not what has O’Connell done that Daboll hasn’t his first year made the playoffs and beat O’Connell in that game and just like the Vikings the Giants also had multiple quarterbacks last season
as a broncos fan, I'm going to buy the first overreaction. And hope for it, dearly.
Hope springs eternal. Unfortunately for the Broncos, the games are played in the fall and winter.
The fact that Brock Purdy wasn't even NOMINATED for Comeback Player of the Year is INSANE.
Rich, Game time owes you. never used them last year. Myself and my boy mark travel with the Lions as die hard fans and we purchase our first travel game with the cardinal's and and received $20 discount. I guess it's worth listening to you.
I'm not gonna necessarily disagree with the Hot Seat coaches except with McDermott, the Bills would really have to fall flat this year for him to be on the hotseat. I think he bought another season with the way the roster changed going into '24. The Bills would have to miss the playoffs completely though. Maybe if they didn't win the division or lost in the WC round he would be gone too.
Best case scenario for that sack record to be broken is Watt & Highsmith. Watt would get like 24 to break his record, and then Highsmith would need 16+.
It’s doable.
The true sack record by two teammates is Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko who had 40.5 sacks in 1981. Come on Rich Eisen/Brockman!
Were sacks officially recorded in 1981? That might be why there's a disconnect, because I know they weren't an official stat that was recorded for way too long.
@@tomneff7102 It wasn't until recently they opened the door for all of the pre 1982 stats. All of those are now included
@@BoyGreen25 Bet. Thanks for the Clarification, my guy! Because I think a lot of my Steelers defenses in the 70s factor in quite high on this list too. Thanks for the quick reply.
@@tomneff7102 Yes the all time sack numbers look A LOT different with this adjustment!
Sweet, I had it - Keith Millard.
Thank you for refusing to put Tomlin on the "hot" list....we all know he's cool as a cucumber.
As a Lions fan I pray the Patriots go 0-17 and have that in common with us for eternity
I'm glad people are finally seeing the truth about Lawrence. He's an ok QB but he's not worth $50mil/ year
Id say jets schedule looks like a generous 10-7 season
I hate when people say "your draft does not effect you once youre playing" because it 100% does. If purdy was a 1st round pick, he would have signed for 55 mil a year back in february. If brock purdy played the way that trevor lawrence has, 49ers would have drafted a qb. Only reason lawrence is not scrutinized is because he has been considered a future great since he was in hs and had so much hype coming into the league.
Lawrence isn’t even average. Even when they’re winning they aren’t scaring anyone. Let him walk or offer him $30 mil.
Why is the only option, overpay your QB or let him walk? Why can't they just pay QBs who haven't done anything what they're worth? Pay Trevor around 40-45m per year, it's fair and you'll still be able to pay guys around him to help the team. We need to stop this nonsense of every single QB who's contact is up, gets the most money ever or around the most ever. It's ridiculous.
Tell me the last time the Dolphins have a coach make the playoffs in each of his first 2 season. I'll wait.
I have Trevor Lawrence in fantasy and the fact Brockman doesn’t like him makes me feel great about having him (not being sarcastic)
Rich “there’s hard decisions to make” in Miami, he means they have to figure out if they’d pay Tua 50 or 60 million after choking in the playoffs again😂. Idk if I’ve ever heard the dude say there’s an NFL QB that didn’t deserve to be the highest paid dude in the league
Rich thinks that because he and Greeny are JEST fans there are a lot of JEST fans.
Panthers only if Dalton starts....Bengals and Chargers are most likely - Bears, ONLY if Williams doesn't start, Patriots COULD go 10-7 (probably more likely they'd go 0-17), Titans are a POSSIBILITY if Levis has a great season or if he's benched for Rudolph......Washington/Cardinals - NO WAY.
The Jets really only have 1 (almost) guaranteed win.
Lawrence has played 3 years in the NFL…
- 1 lost to Urban Meyer/being a rookie
- Year 2 he took them to the playoffs and won a game with a historic comeback
- year 3 they were 8-3 prior to his injury + Kirks
It’s laughable how much hate this guy gets, maybe give him another year to prove it but if I was an NFL GM starting a franchise he’d be a top 6-8 QB off the draft board
2019, ironically their first Super Bowl winning season in this current stretch, was the last time the Chiefs lost two in a row at home. Somehow they lost to the Colts and Texans at Arrowhead in weeks 5 and 6.
The New York Giants will not set a sack record next year. Their opponents will not be playing from behind very often.
Teams and media are way too quick to move off of players. Let the cake bake for F sakes
How do the Super Bowl champs have a cupcake schedule?
Bears literally beat up the lions in both of their games last year, finished two games behind the packers and tied with the vikings in record and it's a stretch the bears go worst to first? Makes more sense than the chargers passing the chiefs.
Joe Flacco wasn’t Comeback Player, Stefanski wasn’t Coach of the Year, and Myles Garrett was not DPoY… Mason Rudolph outplayed Flacco by a mile, DeMeco Ryans outcoached Stefanski by a mile. And TJ Watt outplayed Myles “Diddy” Garrett by miles and miles. Myles clearly sold his hole to Diddy for a DPoY
Watson isn't with the most pressure. He's easily behind Prescott.
Rich would look funny as hell in those white pants. Hope it happens
Keith Millard??
If only rich had an adequate sidekick this could have potential
Pats schedule is rough! They might not win a game!
They are definitely the most likely to go 0-17 alongside the panthers. I think both eak out a win or 2 at least, though.
Dolphins ain’t firing McCoachin! The softest organization in the league is soft all the way to the top. That’s why they can’t win when it counts. That’s why they fired a stud Super Bowl winner like BFlo over Tia and their failure of a gm.
Brockman with the absolute slander on the chiefs. 0-3? Slow start last year? Bud they started like 1-10. They were playing without chris jones that first game and still only lost by a point. Mahomes and Reid have an insane record on September, especially at home.
Chiefs are starting at least 2-1, probably 3-0.
And who thinks the chargers are going to be better next year? Herbert is a choker. New coach, new system, they lost all their best skill position players and are working with rookies.
The chiefs are going to win the division by at least three games.
I don't get how Lawrence gets so many passes.
What a fall from grace for Watson. Houston meanwhile has rebuilt in a hurry and have "the guy" to replace him already in the building, much to Watson's chagrin. The Browns had better be good.
If the browns are the Lions then you think they are winning the division withe Bmore, healthy Burrow and cincy and possible Pittsburgh with a QB now and that defense? I don't buy what you're selling Rich.
WAIT are you fucking kidding me !? Chargers & Bears !?
Trevor Lawrence has the same numbers as Mac Jones.
DAMN looking at that , football is going to be good , hears the truth 2many good teams , someone has to slid - who's it going to be
Tlaw isnt even top 15, paying him 50 mil would be crazy
Coaching hot seat. I'd say there are 2 coaches IN THE SAME DIVISION AS MCDANIEL on hotter seats: Salah and McDermott.
Dollman and Millard 39 sacks for Min 1989
