Its because of the economic blockade forced upon north korea which stood against them to develop the productive forces so north korea depended on its own resources and technologies , you can understand that more reading the political economic philosophy of north korea called juche which means ( self sufficiency ) . These technologies are mostly taken from the soviet union back in the 50's and 60's . Although this harsh situation , north korea depended on trade with other countries such as china and russia using different methods to avoid the sanctions but this avoidance isn't 100% avoidance . Despite the sanctions against North Korea , it could provide its citizens many benefits under socialist mode of production such as free housing , medical care , education and elimination of unemployment , paid maternity leave and full child care system . North korea returned to the development of nuclear weapons due to the isolation and military threats by the U.S and its allies .. the invasion of iraq and dozens of U.S interventions in countries across the globe showed all the world that any nation will be destroyed if they don't have the proper means of self defense infront of an imperialist empire that have hundreds of weapons of mass destruction .

Would be very interesting to see a video about Pyongyang's transportation system. You talked about the metro already, but there are also trams and trolleybuses, nobody talks about them. I've not been to DPRK but in some footage I've seen not only old soviet models but also newer more streamlined trams. Are they locally manufactured or maybe Chinese? They could be modernised soviet designs with new interiors or built new from scratch. And what about other major cities? So many questions 🤔
That topic is currently in the top 5 or so on my list of upcoming ideas; "Pyongyang's Taxis, Trams and Trolleybuses". Same with the metro, they operate older buses and trams from the USSR and eastern bloc although recently they've begun to run domestically produced vehicles.
Also also, in my Chongjin video I briefly mentioned that there's a tram network - that's the only city outside of the capital to operate one. As to why that is, I'm not completely sure although I would assume it was a holdover from prior to the founding of the DPRK...? There were plans to expand it but they haven't come to fruition yet.
I stayed at the Yanggakdo in 2019 and loved it, I had such an incredible view of the city from my room and the lobby bar had the nicest staff. It was also the only hotel in the DPRK I stayed in that had hot water in the shower so that was a plus!

I love this channel. It is SO hard to find media and information around DPRK that doesn't take a political side. Some folks just want to learn. Because of where I live, I cannot travel there (though I want to very much.) Thank you for these videos!
A point that is worth considering though is that while many hotels do exist that offer services to foreigners, the requirement that one always be accompanied by a guide economically forces many into a group tour. Such a group tour generally makes all the choices regarding hotel choice so that the individual traveler may have no such choice in hotels. Moreover, if one arrives and finds the hotel disagreeable, it will generally be impossible for the traveler to switch hotels.
Usually, we'd organise a popular hotel in Pyongyang for group tours, yes, but for a lot of independent tours, the choice is up to the traveller. The risk with a group tour is, if you put a group in a smaller more niche hotel with fewer amenities, you might end up with some disagreeable tourists.
@@DPRKExplained so, that explained why Yanggakdo and Koryo are mistakenly tought as the only hotel permited for foreign tourist?
