It must sound good in person, cause it even sounds good on my phone. As far as the descending lick in Crazy Train, can I suggest trying 2 (5th string), 0 (open 5th string), 4 (6th string), 0 (open 5th string) for more ease in playing it. As a lead guitarist who often gets *made* to sing, I've had to learn easier ways of playing things so I don't have to think about what I'm playing, so... Just a suggestion.
Great video. Cool guitar. Nice tones.... Cause, them tones brah.
That's the way I've played it until recently, did it differently for this video. I prefer the open string way I think.
Ah. Cool. I was just being motherly, lol... but I'm a dude. So weird. :D
Looking forward to seeing the finished product, as well as the journey to get there.
CSGuitars I agree with all your modification ideas. Brilliant 👍
Gets an all black brutal looking gothic V, first thing he plays on it is clean soft cords....
Do you call that practice foreplay, Colin?
You know if you don't play any clean in a video someone boring will complain about it. I'm appeasing the dads in cardigans here.
IT's like dating, you have to ease into the V... first is flowers, a nice date, etc.. don't just go straight for the V or you get slapped!
Oi lol. I'm a dad, in my 60's. I don't wear cardigans, but I do own 2018 Gibson Flying V and 100 watt Blackstar.
So there lol. Great post as usual and loved your rendition of Cream's Sunshine of You Love.
I suddenly felt the need to dye my hair blonde, get a lip pearcing and wear loose cargo trousers. And of course blast Hybrid Theory at full volume.
Linkin Park isn't goth though
@@SuperAssasinSteve Yeah, I know. But the goth-ish aesthetic spread broadly around the year 2000
Oh man, I missed these guitar upgrade series
I have been waiting for this!!!!!
Do you love the V?!?!
Love for Cream! Nice to hear some Sunshine 👍👍
Hermes losing parcels? Never! You're lucky that when they found it they didn't throw it over a 6ft high brick wall into your garden, then claim that you signed for it.
Yes!, while not another “will it shred?” series this is definitely the next best thing.
Looking forward to how this turns out.
I have never played a v guitar before . My cousin bought a epiphone goth v in 2004 from a magazine. And I will say this , the guitar is awesome and one of the most comfortable guitars I have ever played . I have tried to buy it so many times .
COLIN! STOP!! DO IT TO AN EPIPHONE GOTH V!!! They were made in korea. So the quality of them is quite excellent. And they also have the string through body goodness you are looking for! Plz don't chop up this discontinued jem :(
Its his guitar, if anything he’s just making it infinitely better.
Badass guitar it reminds me of my Gibson Gothic Explorer I had back in the day that got stolen out of a storage unit!!
Oh man..I feel for you. I've always wanted a Gothic Explorer.
DR440 I bought one of the first ones that came out in 1999 I saved up money for almost a year to buy it I really wanted one cause I was obsessed with James Hetfields when I saw him playing one! It got stolen back in 2006
@@deanplayer69metalplayer89 Damn ...that sucks. I totally get where you are coming from. I worked a job making $6.75 an hour to buy a Les Paul Gothic in those days. That really makes you attached to something.
A glow-in-the-dark crackle finish would have looked awesome
Man, there is nothing cooler than a flying v
Oh man.one of the very few gibsons that DOESN'T need modification.
No it is perfect from the factory, he ain't getting his hands on my Gothic V, and I am not gonna clone his, that's for sure.
Aside from the headstock issue Colin brought up.
@@Furiora i got mine brand new in 01 and I have played it a million hours, and have bend the S... Out of it, in standart and drop tuning, and it always comes out in tune, I use fast fret, before and after I play it, and lube the nut with graphite, every time I change the strings. I do that to all my guitars, and I never have tuning problems. So if you ask me, the Gothic V is perfect from the factory.
Quite a nice guitar. Also, Goth Colin in the thumbnail? Kinda hot if he did it now.
EDIT: Yes, I edited it because apparently Colin doesn't actually age.
I only age on the inside.
@@ScienceofLoud There's a response that could happen to this, but I won't.
Instead, now I'm imagining you yelling at the kids outside for playing football too close to your garden.
@@V3xxe GET OFF MY LAWN!
Okay but that all matte black hollowbody is absolutely beautiful.
String thru all the way! Reverberation plus sustain, yes please!!! eyeliner is a bonus.
I have the Explorer. My local shop had one come in recently on a trade and I immediately picked it up. I’d wanted one of these gothic Explorers since they first came out back in 1998 or so, and I finally was able to give 13-year-old me that gift. Just about 25 years later than I would’ve liked. It’s an amazing guitar really, I’ll definitely be holding on to it.
Great! I really enjoyed "will It shred" series and I'm sure this one will be fun to watch as well! Please make more projects like these!
Can remember these when they came out. Really wanted one. And now i’ve seen it again i still do 🤤
Jesus Colin, you send hearts to a LOT of comments. Actually it's a good way of knowing you read them 👍
Please please, let her stay gothic man, I still collecting Gothic series and she is beauty, you are damn lucky to get this baby that price.
I used to own the explorer from this line. Fantastic guitar and I love the minimalist ebony fretboard.
Another upgrade series? Yaaasssssss!
I can't wait to see the finished build. Sounds very much like a look that I would like. Very classic.
The tone is happenin', man! Sunshine of Your Love sounds ALIVE!
Super excited for this guitar! Hope to see more soon!
Can’t wait to see and hear the finished product!
4:33 I didn't see that coming... :D
It’s really nice to see a fellow Scotsman play guitar
4:30 Colin is best Colin.
Well done and thanks for sharing brother! Interesting to see forthcoming mods and upgrades!
Be Well Colin!
Please record every process you do to this black beauty. I'm curious of the processes you're doing
Ahhhhhhh here's that quality content I subscribed for.
I loved this guitar line when I frist started playing, really have wanted both a Les Paul Gothic and a Gothic Explorer all my life
Metric > Brexit.
Drill baby drill! Your "improvement" vids will be highly anticipated Colin. Great find brother. That beast is going to look killer! Peace!
I can't wait to see what this guitar ends up looking like. Knowing your track record, I bet it will be awesome.
Thanks for the link, I didn't even recognize you.... anyway you made a world of difference to the guitar as well as yourself.
I almost bought the Goth V in 00, when I got my Goth LP then a month later the Goth Explorer came in. Both were bought the minute they came off the truck, go tthe call from my dealer and got then for less than asking.... My Brother got the SG for my nephew... Love the Ebony fretboards, my personal fav. Hot sounding, great playing, great looking. Never felt the need to modify anything on them.... Just came across your channel while trying to fix a LP type from china I got to experiment and mod. Tghanks for the great vids!!
Very excited to see how this goes
Looking forward to see how this turns out. Like your idea of gold hardware and relicing it
Love when you say "spooky".
I'm 55 and I remember in elementary school we were taught the metric system as well already knowing the imperial system. USA tried to convert to the metric system, but it just really never caught on nationwide. Nowadays you need to know both if you want to live here in the US.
Right so used Gibson over new Epiphone. Got it! :D
Buying exactly what I wanted new seemed like cheating.
I want to work for this, it's more satisfying that way.
Dig that V!! My black sticker V is a Korean copy like this from the 80's with grover tuners like urs and a Kahler floating whanger!
Yayyyy new project guitar! :D
I absolutely love V's and like what you are planning on doing with this one. Looking forward to seeing the progress and the final result. If there is anything we here in the states can do to help you track stuff down, give us a shout.
Before you drill any holes in the body, try it with a cheap gold stopbar. You might like it. And I think a black/white/black pickguard would look much better and more custom styled than the pure black one. Be sure to get a matching jack plate to.
No disrespect to Collin. Absolutely love the guy. But the fact that he just decided to snag one of theses one day for 650 and I’ve been looking for one for over 5 years and they are all $1,500+ really grinds my gears lol.
Awesome video, love the guitar, can’t wait to see how it looks after. ✌🏼
Your local hardware store will stock metric and imperial.
Get those there instead of shipping from the USA.
Along with Edwards Joker pickups, the 500T/496R combo are my absolute fav's.
UUUGH...I loved this guitar for years. I always wanted one and somehow never ended up with it. It's the reason I love satin black guitars. My two favorite bands back in the day (Static X and Kittie) had them.
I envy you, sir.
Love it! Now you got me wanting an Epi Goth V!
I've missed the CSGuitars guitar projects.
4:30 Not like 14y old Colins black eyeliner but gold like presenting Colins eyeliner!
I just realized that the goth I the thumbnail is YOU!! HAHA
What's weird is that these gothic guitars don't have fret markers. But some have the islam moon and star inlay on the 12th fret.
But if these guitars have fret markers, skull inlays should do it because they are goth guitars.
I got that symbol tattood on in 2005 . I only found out later it was islamic lol oops
While it is an Islamic symbol, the reason it’s on these guitars is it’s the logo that some of the very earliest Gibson mandolins used on the headstock. So the inlay and the portrait of Orville on the back of the headstock are callbacks to their early days is my understanding.
Surprisingly, trying to find these Gothic series Gibsons are quite rare nowadays.
Is that trap colin ????
Maybe I missed it but is that an EBONY fingerboard? Regardless, KOOL guitar and intriguing project!!!!
Yes, it is an ebony board.
@@ScienceofLoud appreciate the reply!!!
Thanks for the video mate! I really should have bought one of those guitars from the Gibson Gothic series when they first about in production circa 1998 - 1999 from what I recall. Great job showing the versatility of this great guitar series: I heard everything there from Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" to Bon Jovi's "Lay Your Hands On Me" to Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". I can't quite get the other two songs: the clean one you started with and the thrashy riff one that sounds very similar to Megadeth's "Wake Up Dead". ROCK ON & STAY GOTH AT HEART MATE! 🤘🏾😎🎸🦇🖤🤍🕊
I use the String Butler too. It helped a lot on my SG.
What you're after is what's in my avatar pic. Didn't bother with the string butler no need. WD Music used to do the V tailpiece not sure if they still do.
I actually own the same Les Paul Studio Gothic you show here in the pic. The only differences are the pick ups (the original are 490r 490t) and the case: the studio gothic is black and has dark grey fur inside.
I've had it since 2001, gift from my parents. And I've never been goth at all.
You know, it's all about the name. If they had named it "Les Paul Studio Edgar Allan Poe" or "Les Paul Moon and Star edition" or whatever you you want... the taste would have been different.
Anyway, it's beautifull, reliable, sounds right. It is simply dark as the night. Have a nice day everyone!
I played an Epiphone Gothic Explorer and it was amazing.
My favorite Flying V finish is the New Century. Basically, a full front mirror pickguard.
Loved the goth series
Static x signature is also a 58 shape WITH the v string thru piece. I love the boxy outline of the shoulders of a 58 compared to the 67. I would get the gold covers but keep the original screws noticing since you mentioned it's never been done before.
I’ve got a 2000 gothic LP, and I love it. However, I wonder what a complete set would be like as far as collector value. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Sweet guitar, crass title. Ha ha. Can't wait to see and hear how it turns out! And personally, I'd go with black or chrome pickup covers. Maybe aged steel looking?
Loved this series of guitars. Truly a modern "golden age" for Gibson and Epiphone around 1999-2004. Prices hadn't yet SKYROCKETED and they were making "alternative guitars" that didn't feel like blind attempts at "innovation".
There's probably an easy way to access gold screws in imperial measurements...if only you knew someone in the states who could do that....hmmmm
Already got some ordered, but if they get lost crossing the sea I'll give you a call, help of hunt some more down.
14 year old Colin; part Pinhead (Hellraiser), part Edward Scissorhands, all metal!
The thing about courier companies is you can never tell if they are trying to screw you over, or are just shite.
EDIT: One suggestion, a 3-ply black-white-black scratchplate to replace the current one?
4 ply, we are going luxury here.
It just needs that outline to break up the homogenous black, you are thinking the way I think.
Instead of white, wouldn't gold be more suited for this guitar then?
nice tip, but where to find and buy this guitar string buckler? for V type? or what is the name.... :)
Hadn't watched a Colin video in a while. Forgot about the snippet always at the end of the video amd was already scrolling to a next video when I heard... that...
Got to keep you on your toes somehow
Your V is like the evil twin of mine. I got the Epiphone Snow Falcon that’s allll White haha. This guitar already looks and sounds sick dude! Can’t wait to see it when you’re done modding it! 🤘🏻
Oh man, I love my Gibson Gothic V. Mine has been fitted with a killswitch, master volume, tone pot disconnected and dragonaut humbuckers. I really dont like the direction you are going with your gibby, but to each its own. Ill have to look at that string aligner for the headstock, thats brilliant!
I would like to watch this build series as long as you promise to finish it haha! I haven’t checked back in a while but it seems like you still had one more episode to go for will it shred haha 😂
Hi. Which model of String Butler did you install? Is it was V4 FBK Oversizesd?
The screws you need, look on the EMG website to see what they have. Why not put a pair of Hetfield Active pickups and run them at 18 volts. Should make your V sound awesome!
I’m really interested to see how this will turn out
But I can hardly wait for your mod on this guitar. I'm sure it will be loads of fun,
hey Colin - whats your fav stuff to play on guitar these days?
What is the neck profile on it? I have a 2018 Flying V and it has a slim taper neck which I am still getting used to. I'm used to thicker necks
I so badly wanted to add a pic of my gothic "V" . I love this guitar! I got it with active emg pickups. I have since replaced them with factory pickups as I like those better. I wouldnt do the changes to my guitar that you want to do. But I am VERY curious to see yours after you get it done. Keep up the good work!!!!!
I can't wait to see the final product :) Golden Gothic Geetar :D
I've always wanted the explorer. I've never understood why explorers and Vs are almost never offered with no fingerboard inlays (or just a 12th feet inlay)
Would installing a graphite or roller nut help for tuning stability instead of that contraption that straightened the strings through the current nut?
I have the 2002 gibson les paul gothic w/ 81 85 zakk wylde Emg humbuckers...it shreds
Hey I have one of those new B-2 Flying V's..it's my first Gibson..my first V (Well full V..I have a Jackson Rhoads)...and I'm left handed. I love it honestly...but I probably would do something small to the aesthetics of it though...otherwise I plug it into my Carvin X100B reissue...into my Zoom G2..and I'm good to go.
Way to rock out Bon Jovi. I was suffering while my slow brane worked to remember what it was. Sharing in case others are are suffering, too. Cheers!
Please do a video on you switching all the parts in the style of the "Will it Shred" Serious... PLEASE!!!!
The V is definitely the best looking of the Gothic series. I myself own a Gibson Les Paul Guitar of the Week #20, 2007 Satin Ebony. I'm interested in embarking on a similar journey, at some point. I think I'd go with Graphtech for the hardware. For the nut I'm thinking a custom Zero Glide fret using Graphtech's Black Tusq XL. Have you ever tried one of these? You can custom build your own. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
a guitar project you say? I have a couple questions:
-when do you estimate to finish it, and
-will it shred?
;-) XP
I'd check if the circuit has 300k pots and swap them for 500k's in case it has them, will liven up the tone of the guitar for sure.
I've never understood the string butler, I've always played Gibsons and Epiphones and never had an issue (as long as the nut is well cut, like any other guitar). A stock '58 Reissue Epi from '01 is probably one of the most stable guitars I've had.
Weren't the Gibson Gothic V's modeled after the Gibson '67 V and the Epiphone Gothics that came out later modeled after the '58? The only reason I ask is cause the 58's look wider at the neck and this one doesn't
I’ve been after a gothic Explorer for years. I’d love to put a Floyd Rose FRX on one and maybe some Seymour Duncan black winters and set it up in B standard
Hey guys talking about interesting Gibsons, didn’t they make a greenish swamp ash series with red voodoo inlays at some point?
