Ah Uplink. Such a classic. I'm a bit torn on the UI refresh they did. It does take away some unnecessary clicking around (Such as picking up the log deleter window and putting it on each log entry) but it doesn't really have that matrix-hacker feel that was there in the old one.
I'm confused. Are you talking about the "refresh" from Introversion to UplinkOS, or was there another refresh done afterwards from UplinkOS to a newer UplinkOS?
Should have mentioned that it's a mod. A lot of people here think that this was an actual update and that this replaces the original. Also, it's not an update for 2018. This mod is from March of 2017, and I got my hopes up when I saw the title thinking they added support for the Onlink mod or something.
God i love the fact that they had a reference to a certain good movie called Wargames in there.. Protovision was the name of the gaming company that Matthew Brodericks character wanted to hack to get a game before launch.. :)
So glad you checked this out. I still have a game I'm playing with the new UI since I actually only discovered he mod some time last year. It really breathes new life into a game I already loved.
Uplink to my mind is one of the older thriller genre games. The sound effects added a level of suspense that was truly stressful. I am sad that some of the retro sounds (you mention modems) have been removed. I remember back in the day, first owning InterNIC, do a few missions to get some crucial software then subsequently searching through banks to find one to rob. Of course first thing I'd do is bounds through every single IP listed in InterNIC! Then upgrade my hardware and start the missions with crazy money.
In a nutshell the idea is to keep an eye out for bank accounts with a ton of money during a mission. You then transfer the money to you and wipe the logs (Sounds easy? It isn't...and it is a game over if you fail. Lots of trial and error) Then you simply cancel the mission, take a small reputation hit and overspend like a Lotto millionaire.
Mansen Usually there is no need to cancel the mission, just write down the account number and bank-IP, or the receiving one if you are asked to transfer the money, and hack that account later, after having finished the mission. And of-course keep an eye out for large transfers or large balances on the accounts that you come across. Alternatively it is semi-possible to just write down all the account numbers you see in the transfer logs and check them one by one, depending on just how boring your evening is... :)
Hi! I'm a security researcher and I love watching your videos. This game seems pretty interesting but I wouldn't call it a Sim. Anyways I know it's just a game. But if anyone here actually likes hacking and breaking into systems it turns out you can do it legally and get paid for it. Bug crowd and hacker one run programs. There's a book hacker one gives out when you sign up that gives you a decent intro to Web hacking. Also there's a lady who's a friend of mine by the name of Georgia Weidman who has an excellent book out for starting but she also has a course on cybrary for free. All of this will cost you nothing and you can do the real thing. Just for anyone interested I figured I'd say something about it for those who want to do more but aren't for sure what's even possible for them or how to start. But this game looks very fun and great video as always.
this game isn't about bugs and stuff like that. if you read the emails and the world history up intil your point in the game, you will find that there is a lot going on. a GOOGLE like corporation is up against several tech giants, you work of them, their name is Uplink. Theres other hackers in the world, some hired by your company, others are not. theres homes, houses and people you can hack into the lives of. its a post-tech society where computers are ... way too easy to use and .. way too saturated. its a cautionary tale and a serious one at that. you should play it, and take your black, red, blue or white hat off while you do it. Put on your glasses and read between the lines in the game.
I wouldn't call it a sim either, but it's more a simulator than many games out there claiming to be sims (like surgeon sim :), there are a few things in here that directly correspond to reality, but yeah. I'm no longer an infosec professional....
Random Spark I didn't mean to offend. It looks like an interesting game from a strategic point. Bug bounties don't involve debugging code or looking for little errors in the website. You get told your scope and you look for everything from xss to sqli. They may have servers they allow to be audited so you usually banner grab do a lot of recon check out the services it's running and a lot of times make your own exploit if you are decent with low level exploitation such as buffer overflows a lot of fuzzing trying to find a seg fault seeing if you can overwrite eip and then working on bypassing stack protection. Then you can post your poc and get money from them and the manufacturer of the service like we will say post fix for smtp for instance. It's not reporting minor bugs it's known as pentesting or offensive security. You are legitimately allowed to completely break into their system they just don't want you to obviously do things like disrupt service with a denial of service which really isn't even hacking or getting hashed passwords or emails of their customers obviously. I didn't start in bug bounties it's just a better way to apply myself than ending up in prison like most of my friends. But anytime I see something to do with hacking or security in general I always try to post something that may help someone that could be interested. I wish there was more of that when I started so I assume someone may appreciate it. I didn't mean to offend. It's a good looking game. A really good video on it as well. Been a subcriber for a long while.
Scott Manley Thanks for the reply Scott! Yeah I saw a video of yours where you said you did software design but I didn't know you were into information security that's awesome. Yeah I understand what you mean I guess I took the sim out of context. Just figured I'd post something a lot of people playing hacker games may like hacking or like to know more about it. I play kerbal because I love rockets and would love to know more about them so I figured it may be a similar thing.
Ah, Uplink. Had so much fun with this back in the day. There is actually a browser-based multiplayer "hacking" game that felt (and probably was) quite inspired by Uplink, called Slavehack. It's really neat, and is actually player versus player - you very well might get hacked by another player, getting infected by their malware, which then slows down your machine and generates money for the other player. It's actually real-time as well, so you might find that things have changed drastically when you log on a day later. You have to manually edit text logs to remove your tracks, or maybe set it up so that it looks like someone else did it. Or just leave rude ASCII art in the log for that matter. It's actually really cool. Apparently there's a Slavehack 2 nowadays, but it's been a decade since I played either of them so I have no clue if it's any good! But the first game (still up, by the looks of it) was a great time killer during ICT class.
Holy, this upgrade is not just a visual polish but adds so much story telling as well (commnication with the clients, dialogue options etc), this is a must have for the gameplay
and hey, would you look at that, Scott is doing a newbie mistake of deleting ALL the logs, you ALWAYS must keep your latest "connection established" log as if it doesn't exist, there will be a disconnection log without its pairing connection log raising alarms
if you've played uplink already and want a challenge, there's also onlink. it doesn't have the fancy new UI but gameplay wise it's much more difficult. bank hacking is HARD and there are new evil security systems, there's even a new storyline (kind of)
has onlink had any updates? I haven't looked at it for a year or two.... I think this is just the new UI mod introversion theirselves demoed awhile back on their yt channel (probably in a prison architect video lol) While I absolutely loved Uplink... I'd love to have a remake more than I really want to replay it yet again. And yeah, I've probably played every other hacking game that's been made :)
Wow, this really takes me back... I remember playing the hell out of Uplink when it first came out, and that made me a huge fan of Introversion ever since. The new UI is nifty, too. :D
It was more fun in servers that allowed console access. You could delete the entire log folder with a single command, and trash the system for a bit more extra chaos.
Or you can *redacted* on the system then run run the *redacted* program you got from *redacted* and it goes down forever, and all of the hackers start losing their collective ish.
I’ve sunk so much time into this game. I’ve had it since the originally cd release when the authkey card was shiny black on matte black. Seeing this, I have a deep desire to see this mod meld with the Onlink overhaul which really amps up the possibilities.
Classic Game, such fond memories of this one, remember trying to get modded systems working and such when i was 16. wow im so getting a hold of this. Thank you very much Mr Manley!
One of my favorite mods for this game is called Onlink. It adds a whole slew of new missions, software, hardware, and challenges to the game. It's been in development for a very long time, still pretty unstable (seems to crash at random), but the amount of stuff it adds is just mind blowing. I hope that one day we can see Onlink combine with Uplink OS. As much as I like Uplink OS, it still has all of the same drawbacks as the original game; There's just not enough challenge there. Onlink constantly throws new stuff at you, and you might find yourself grossly ill-equipped to handle a mission you thought you could do, all because you didn't have an IP Probe to make sure you could actually get in and do what you have to do. And as much as I love Onlink, the interface just doesn't work at all these days. I love the old matrix/deus ex like hacker aesthetic, but even something as simple as reading a single line in an e-mail is frustrating in modern resolutions. UplinkOS fixes all those problems. Would love to see the these two combine together some day.
Haven't played Uplink in ages. I tried finding similar "hacking" games, but none were nearly as fun. Though I do remember going to InterNic, getting every single server and setting up a route through it. That took ages! Luckily you could save your route. I might play it again with this mod. Looks interesting. (I've also never taken the evil side, so there's another thing I could try)
It's good to accept all the missions that give you half the money in advance right in the beginning so you can buy the tools. Also this way sometimes you have to get 2-3 files from the same server.
I still put a few hours into this game every now and then, but I've come to much prefer onlink because of the sheer amount of additional content. The original feels too simple after playing onlink. I would love this mod if it worked for onlink as well.
Well ant this a blast from the past. I remember the original version used "gigaquads" and took place in the distant future of march 2010. A fantastical time when the internet was all dial-up still.
No surprise that Scott doesn't like the movie Hackers. It came out when I was "that" age so I actually loved it at the time. It hasn't aged well however.
I think i still prefer the original Uplink UI. Then again UIs these days are getting more wanky animations and design practices with questionable usability. So its a bit fitting for the year 2020
I used to play a web based game back in the early 2000's also exactly like this. The only major differences I remember of hand are there wasn't a store to get software from, instead you hacked other players and stole it from them, and delete their copies if you wanted to. And the logs were full text files you manually edited, so you could even implicate others.
Played the game a decade+ back on Linux and don't remember anything except the color blue and proxies. Gotta say it still looks like a fun game. Its got that certain amount of micromanagement that gets you addicted.
Im glad you are bringing back an old favorite of mine..... I still have the original DOS/win98 version =) Back when you had to go through a table of data to log into the game ;)
As somebody who played the original Uplink back when it first came out, this mod is an IMPRESSIVE upgrade to its overall look and ability. Though it doesn't change the mechanics, which is a slight shame as the game was always too easy in my opinion.
The only issues I have with this game are that once you figure out the optimal way to hack something whilst keeping the risk at a minimum, you simply repeat that procedure over and over instead of trying new/different tools that are available since they end up being inferior, and the game can get pretty repetitive. That being said, this game is unique and very fun it takes would would be a complicated premise and they execute it in s very simple way. If you aren't familiar with all of the tools and methods at your disposal, it is very entertaining to try all of these different ideas. For when it was released, UpLink is a fantastic game. In modern times, it is still a great game albeit graphically outdated.
I also enjoyed the old freeware game "Decker". The one based on the old Shadowrun tabletop RPG's decking rules. Had that very cyberpunk VR theme, and was basically a roguelike. Too bad the dev didn't take it further. I'd like to see a modern game similar to it. Shadowrun's decker rules really fit into the roguelike frame, playing very much like one.
For anyone just getting into this there's a lot of stuff you can do. A bit past where Scott left off there are missions to get bank account info. Some of the bank accounts have an absurd amount of money in them; you just need to poke around a bit. With memory and processor upgrades and the right software that money can become your money. As long as you don't get caught.
Uplink H.E. was a classic. I wish they would take this game and cross it with PC Building Simulator and mix it with a good story line to breathe some new life into it. That would be killer.
Some fun facts about this game: * The music is made by Skaven from the group Future Crew, and other musicians from the demoscene. * Although very difficult, you can commit bank fraud in this game and get access to tons of money. The banks are the only "servers" in the game to perform a passive trace in addition to an active trace. If the authorities find you after hacking a bank, you don't get a fine or warning; it's game over! (Unless you blow up your gateway). Hacking a bank requires research, planning and multiple attempts because of precious little time for each connection. * You can hack the criminal database and frame people, even outside of missions. Whoever you frame will show up in the news. I also believe you can frame people by modifying logs, given that the fake IP leads to a home connection.
Have you encountered Hacknet? Something of a spiritual successor to Uplink, but with what to me was a selling point that you can do everything from a built-in command line.
One of your first moves should always be to go create dummy bank accounts at every bank. Traces are slower on servers where you have a 'compromised' account, and having a bank account at the bank somehow counts.
the first passcode he broke was "rosebud" which is a reference to the movie Citizen Kane. the guys last words and the name of his old sled were rosebud. just found it interesting.
There was a game Called Darksigns back a few years ago , It supported actual scripting uploading to servers and realtime log files. You could even build your own websites ,servers and scripts .
You always have to delete the logs on InterNic because sometimes, they've already seen the logs and tracking back along your route. By removing InterNic they ur safe.
Just recently there was another Uplink mod, titled 'Uplink: Deep Blue' that seems to be a more faithful upgrade. Not that there's anything wrong with this one, but thought I'd let people here know.
Does it run better with the new UI? I tried playing it again a couple years ago and found the game doesn't play nice with modern hardware. Used to love this back in the day. Remember thinking it all seemed a little surreal because I wasn't too far out of Dial up when I was playing it.
Have you seen the Game Code 7? it's a hacking text adventure. I met the Devs at Games Anglia recently and the game is fantastic, i reckon it's right up your alley though possibly not one for youtube.
It's a great game, and you can make it pretty easy if you know what you're doing. As you do missions you'll get missions that involve moving money from bank accounts. You'll eventually discover an account with something around a million dollars in it. With the right tools and skills, you can steal that money for yourself, which will enable you to buy a top of the line gateway and hardware and all the best software. It's not easy to get away with, but you'll know you've gotten away with it when you suddenly gain a whole bunch of hacker ranks as the game decides you succeeded. It makes the rest of the game somewhat easy, so it may not be for everyone.
Aw man! You could've at least reached the point where *that* email pops up in your inbox! That's where the fun starts. Btw, I think I liked the original UI more.
This new UI is very pretty but damn is it confusing. In the old game you had a schematic of the gateway which showed you how many processor and memory slots it had at a glance here you just have a generic icon.
great...now i'm nostalgia-ing super hard over my digital dreams crossing over the sea... my favorite thing to do in this game was rob a bank and frame an innocent by standard, then watch the news for them getting arrested
It's better to use the internal services machines, since the connection is held on them for longer. People don't like giving the logs on their machines to other corporations, I guess.
InterNIC - noooo, there's a filter that you can use and (unless it was a mod added thing) you'll get significantly more time from banks and government servers, or even just internal servers than public access ones. You definitely get more time if you have cracked an account but those'll be detected as traces happen so you end up having to rehack them :) I played waayyy too much of this once upon a time.
"How did they catch the hacker?"
"He accidentally sent an email to the wrong person"
lol
people get caught by doing dumb things.

I don't think that's bad. That feel is replaced by another type of hacker, A more futuristic one that seems to use smooth UIs and such.
Introversion didn't do the UI update - it's a mod.
Intirversion didn't they selled the code and someone made a new UI
I'm confused. Are you talking about the "refresh" from Introversion to UplinkOS, or was there another refresh done afterwards from UplinkOS to a newer UplinkOS?
Feeling the same.

Introversion actually released a game called DEFCON which is based on the same movie :) It's very atmospheric
Devs at introversion must be hardcore fans, they also published the "Global Thermonuclear War" program from the movie : it's called Defcon
You should check out 'DEFCON' - their other big hit which is basically Thermonuclear War on the Big Board.
There's an easter egg and achievement (More of an easter egg than just the named server) with this.
There's references to other hacker movies, Sneakers (1992) in particular (a password "mysocratesnote"). Fantastic game :)
So glad you checked this out. I still have a game I'm playing with the new UI since I actually only discovered he mod some time last year. It really breathes new life into a game I already loved.

Hey, Scott! Thanks for the heads up and renewing my love for Uplink!
It's good to accept all the missions that give you half the money in advance right in the beginning so you can buy the tools. Also this way sometimes you have to get 2-3 files from the same server.
definitely looks much nicer
I still put a few hours into this game every now and then, but I've come to much prefer onlink because of the sheer amount of additional content. The original feels too simple after playing onlink. I would love this mod if it worked for onlink as well.
Ah I see you're a man of culture as well. (I still don't know how to deal with an ACS unless you NEED denial, in which case that'll take a while.)
I remember spending hours designing new Gateways with interesting designs in Photoshop back in the day.
Well ant this a blast from the past. I remember the original version used "gigaquads" and took place in the distant future of march 2010. A fantastical time when the internet was all dial-up still.
I loved this game.
This game came out in the first year of high school for me, was the most EPIC game at the time
No surprise that Scott doesn't like the movie Hackers. It came out when I was "that" age so I actually loved it at the time. It hasn't aged well however.
E2qNX8btraQ3zRD6J7fc i watched it last year and it is a pretty entertaining game
HACK THE PLANET!
I loved it for what it was - A Hollywood idea of what hacking was back then.
I think i still prefer the original Uplink UI.
Then again UIs these days are getting more wanky animations and design practices with questionable usability. So its a bit fitting for the year 2020
yeah except I can't play with the original Uplink UI because without a scale slider the text is too small to read unless you get a 16" CRT monitor :(
berni8k ui design is getting bloated, yes, but old windows 95 esque ui is just so ugly as well.
im from the future
@@Silver_s105 I too have timetraveled to the year 2020, UIs are still crap, except that the same happened to the rest of the world
I loved Uplink, it was my favorite game when I was young
This was one of my favorite games back in the day
Hell Yeah! It's nice to see this game still covered.
I've been playing this for months now. Such a great mod
Oh man, I LOVED this game. Nice to see it's gotten a fresh coat of paint!
As somebody who played the original Uplink back when it first came out, this mod is an IMPRESSIVE upgrade to its overall look and ability. Though it doesn't change the mechanics, which is a slight shame as the game was always too easy in my opinion.
Thnx for the hint on the Mod - i loved it back in the early 2000s
Great video. I also enjoyed playing Hacknet which is a similar game
rosebud
ahhh Sims cheatcodes ;)

They actually kept the original soundtrack. Awesome.
Omg this is ‘90s as Hell. “Gigaquads stolen.” I must have this 🤣
Uplink H.E. was a classic. I wish they would take this game and cross it with PC Building Simulator and mix it with a good story line to breathe some new life into it. That would be killer.
Some fun facts about this game:
* The music is made by Skaven from the group Future Crew, and other musicians from the demoscene.
This looks great, I'm glad I bought Uplink on Steam a while ago.
Can't believe you are talking about this game. I just downloaded and completed it about 2 months ago! :D
Have you encountered Hacknet? Something of a spiritual successor to Uplink, but with what to me was a selling point that you can do everything from a built-in command line.
The first time you successfully rob a bank is awesome. Do it early, and often for the best gear.
Oh. Woah. Nostalgia bomb when Mystique Part 1 started playing.
Thanks, you inspired me to get this game and I'm loving it!
that takes me back. the last game i bought on a physical disk, still ordered via their website though.
Wow, you brought back some memories with this video, thank you. Going to have to give this reboot mod a spin. It sure looks sexy!
This looks really cool!
I hope they correct flaws of the original. Still great game though.
Its a graphical mod with a few improvements for qol no content changing
I loved this game back in the day!!
What are the odds we'll get a LP of this?
I wouldn't try to make a LP out of this game because you can lose all your progress pretty easily.
One of your first moves should always be to go create dummy bank accounts at every bank. Traces are slower on servers where you have a 'compromised' account, and having a bank account at the bank somehow counts.
The UI is awesome. I kinda miss the ominous two-tone connection-spaghetti map, that _obviously_ every hacker looks at, on a daily basis.
the first passcode he broke was "rosebud" which is a reference to the movie Citizen Kane. the guys last words and the name of his old sled were rosebud. just found it interesting.
Kinda miss the world map view but it looks very slick otherwise. I always loved the concept.
There was a game Called Darksigns back a few years ago , It supported actual scripting uploading to servers and realtime log files. You could even build your own websites ,servers and scripts .

Very funny, Scott
love this game played it for years
You always have to delete the logs on InterNic because sometimes, they've already seen the logs and tracking back along your route. By removing InterNic they ur safe.
Just recently there was another Uplink mod, titled 'Uplink: Deep Blue' that seems to be a more faithful upgrade. Not that there's anything wrong with this one, but thought I'd let people here know.
Speaking of games Ambrosia software published, have you played any of the Escape Velocity series?
Would love to see you do a whole play through of this! Similar to how you did an entire papers please playthrough.
The trace accuracy isn't affected by CPU allocation and you only need to delete the logs at Internic, unless you're ultra-paranoid.
Reducing trace CPU to make power available to other processes.
IIRC Steve Jackson Games is in Uplink as a nod to the time the Secret Service raided their offices over a hacker RPG they produced. XD
Aw man! You could've at least reached the point where *that* email pops up in your inbox!
That's where the fun starts.
Btw, I think I liked the original UI more.
Hi Scott, can you do a video with your thoughts on the spacex zuma mission? preferably with a "high speculative"-section =D would be great
the steve jackson reference is funny because when you log onto their servers they've been raided by the FBI. That actually happened.
Have you looked at the upcoming game Nite Team 4? Looks like it could be a worthy successor to uplink.
8:05 Modems are still a thing ^^ every router to the internet have one integrated ... yes, we still connect via phone line, nothing else
InterNIC - noooo, there's a filter that you can use and (unless it was a mod added thing) you'll get significantly more time from banks and government servers, or even just internal servers than public access ones. You definitely get more time if you have cracked an account but those'll be detected as traces happen so you end up having to rehack them :)
I played waayyy too much of this once upon a time.
I miss the global map for connection building. Hopefully this version allows you to save routes as well.
Aw man, I never knew about this update!
