  • Elden Ring features several beastmen as major characters throughout the game. Maliketh, Serosh, and Blaidd are the major examples, and minor beastmen make up most of the enemies in the mysterious Farum Azula. In this video, we use the beasts to help explain the history of the Lands Between along with the true nature of the Two and Three Fingers.
    Music used:
    Elden Ring OST - Farum Azula
    Elden Ring OST - Beast Clergyman
    Elden Ring OST - Regal Ancestor Spirit
    Elden Ring OST - Subterranean Shunning Grounds

      As an italian, "Cinquedea" is a composition of two words.
      "Cinque", meaning literally "Five", and "dea", dialect for "dita", meaning "fingers".

    This is honestly the best explanation of the "duality concept" in this game, and is a theory I've been searching for for the longest time. Honestly I truly do believe that everything in this game is tied to the split between the Fingers, and it makes sense that everything else in the game reflects that great divide, like echoes of a great explosion.

    • @scottbeale1825
      @scottbeale1825 Год назад +3

      A huge part of the duality theme in the game is the duality of order versus chaos (instead of good versus evil). This ties into the very heavy norse influence on the mythology of the game.
      It also explains something I had been thinking about....
      There are many types of flame in Elden Ring, each with their own color. Orange Giant's/Fell Flame, Red Bloodflame, Black Ghostflame, and Yellow Frenzied flame. The Outer Gods seem to each* have their own form of flame. Except where is the Greater Will's? That's when it hit me: the yellow frenzied flame IS the Greater Will's golden flame.... or at least USED to be before order and chaos was split from one another.
      *Notable exception here is the god of rot, who does not seem to have a flame. Maybe this is because the god is "sealed". Additionally the black flame seems to be associated with both the death birds and thus the twinbird god, and the gloam eyed queen / godskins. I suspect they ultimately worship the same entity.

  • @wind-flower
    @wind-flower 2 года назад +27

    I agree with your theory in almost all points. However, there's one thing I would interpret differently: The Five Fingers are not representative of the One Great, but of an earlier form of the Greater Will (Proto-GW). The One Great is just another word for the primal soup that everything came from. So the timeline is: One Great -> Crucible -> Proto-GW -> GW/Frenzied Flame. The theme of things fracturing and getting progressively smaller over time fits with many item descriptions. The player can use a mending rune to incompletely repair the Elden Ring and still keep the rule of the Greater Will going, so I supposed the GW/Frenzied Flame 2:3 split is the result of an ancient conflict that occurred the end of Placidusax's age (and that we know nothing about).

    • @MasterHyperionMC
      @MasterHyperionMC 2 года назад +9

      Yeah, this addresses my main problem with the theory in the video: he talks about how the One Great came before births, and souls, but then says the One Great may have been Placidussax’s god, and the beastmen worshipped it. While dragons you could argue may not have been born, they still likely have souls, and beastmen certainly do. So that means the One Great can’t have presided over any previous age, if you take Hyetta’s words to be correct.
      Like you said, it seems more like the One Great was the primordial soup from which was formed the Lands Between, and likely beyond.

    Thank Godfrey someone has finally tied together the loose ends in my head. This idea has been bouncing around in my head for the last two weeks. Some add ons:
    I think the Greater Will refers to its victory in achieving an order over the Frenzied Flame. Greater than, rather than some sense of grandeur.
    Another piece of evidence to support the Unified Hands theory is that (correct me if I’m wrong) only the Frenzied Flame and Greater Will make use of maidens.

    I was always under the impression that Melina's ability to kindle the fire giants flame was specific to her, i believe there is some reference in the game to her being "the Kindling Maiden", and that her ability was the work of Marika, that in defiance of the Greater Will she created a spirit imbued with flame to burn the erdtree allowing a tarnished free her from Radagon's Lordship and her punishment for shattering the Elden Ring.

    I always assumed the One Great was connected to the Crucible, the source from which all life sprang. Then the One Great split into the Three Fingers, who became the envoys of the Frenzied Flame and the Two Fingers who became the envoys of the Greater Will.

    • @dweebpatrol
      @dweebpatrol 2 года назад +3

      That would make sense, if I remember right the Erdtree was originally for the Crucible and it existed before the Greater Will came and basically took it over, the chamber of the 3 fingers also directly connects to the deeproot depths. So basically both the Greater Will and Frenzied Flame make their homes at the site of the crucible.

    The Elden Beast end position resembling a single raised finger vs Placidicax makes me think that the 2 fingers were originally interpreting 2 different outer gods, but now is only getting the Greater Will. That would also explain why the two fingers looks beat to hell as well as the weird 2 sides 2 fingers from the talisman that bumps faith.

    Blaidd has one of his eyes closed and is scarred, i think this may relate to the beastmen having their eyes and ears covered. Possibly so he believes that he is loyal to Ranni while the truth, hidden from him, he is essentially a puppet of the Greater Will?
    Fucking excellent video! Much to ponder, thankyou.

  • @arabidllama
    @arabidllama 2 года назад +5

    I've been trying to understand why *only* two shadow-beasts were made - obviously Blaidd was half-formed, so that's likely why they stopped?
    Watching this, it occurred to me that if Queen Marika is pure Greater-Will-Stuff (her "stock" as a Numen, whatever that means?), her shadow can be pure beast.
    With Ranni being half Greater-Will-Stuff and half Moon-Stuff, her shadow is half beast and half really-tall-dude. That's the best the two fingers could manage.
    I think there's an overarching theme of loss of control of a dynasty (or family) as it grows. The G.W. wants heirs, but can't get "pure" ones no matter what it tries.

    If no one has mentioned it already, something else to consider are the Laws of Causality and Regression. One appears to be forward-moving, while the other seems to be backward-moving, but both are described in-game as processes to create one unified world. One of the explorations of Elden Ring's themes seems to be, "Should all things be just one big thing, or should they be many small, individual things?" Regression is described as 'the pull of meaning; that all things yearn eternally to converge.' Causality is described as 'the pull between meaning; that which links all things in a chain of relation'. Attention to the wording indicates a couple constants, which I presume to be constants of reality itself, independent of the Greater Will. The constants are "pull", "meaning", "all things." These all come from the wording of the laws that makes up the Golden Order. And yet, they seem to be inherently contentious, given that both describe a pulling of all things towards different ways to interpret meaning. "Meaning" in this case seems to equate to words like 'experience', 'logic', or 'perception' - words that are connected to the mechanics of how an individual understands reality. Perhaps there's something here to add weight to the conversation about the ties between the Crucible, the One, the Two and Three Fingers, the Erdtree, and the Greater Will.
    Also, from some other Elden Ring videos, I've learned that certain symbols are attributed to certain figures. It's their rune, so to speak, and the complex symbol we see below the Elden Ring in Farum Azula seems to be Placidusax's own amendment. Just as Radagon's symbol is that of intercrossing diagonal lines, its seems that former Elden Lord Placidusax's symbol is that branching iconography descending from the Ring. I don't know what it means exactly about his character, but we know that Radagon was fully invested in the Golden Order - and fittingly, he has a very orderly symbol. Perhaps Placidusax's symbol has to do with the roots or branches of the Erdtree? Those do seem to have their own meaning, and what's more, Placidusax is a character with somewhat tree-like physiology. His big torso (like a trunk) is unlike any other dragon, and he has five heads (branches) - three of which are gone by the time we see him. I wonder what that signifies for the connection to 5 equaling intelligence? It reminds me of how characters sometimes mention that the Erdtree is in decline, even though it seems fine to us, the player (even before we burn it). What happened to lessen its strength, and what was it like before?

    • @mysterin5061
      @mysterin5061 2 года назад +1

      Going off of your definitions of Causality and Regression, I think of this: Godwyn grew attracted to the dragons, or the past Lords. Ranni grew attracted to the stars and the future. Since they both share the Death Cursemark, maybe that is why the symbol we receive isn't straightened as the description states it once was.

    You're channel is probably my new favorite lore channel, I appreciate your willingness to go more in depth that vaati and create logical theories using in game information. Also, with this particular theory, I had the same though when I first did the my frenzied flame playthrough. The crucible is a smelting pot in real life, it makes sense that it would represent the One Great, and be called the crucible because it is kind of the primordial substance that created everything, or at least a large era before th Erdtree. The crucible is related to the Greattree, which we know from the crucible knights, the erdtree seems to be spawn of the split and "mistake" of the greater will, spawning the Golden Order. There are references to a reddish or rust colored primordial substance in item descriptions, I wonder if that was related at all to the primordial form of the One Great.

    I find it interesting that with all the opposing dualities in Elden ring, the two fingers want to keep going forward with their plans, and the three fingers want to go back to a previous state. more weight to your theory!
    I think looking into the specific wording in Japanese might be helpful with all the specific names and such. one thing I do not understand is why the three fingers has a frenzy flame, and the two fingers has no specific equivalent to the fire. is there something in the two fingers that mirrors the three's flame?
    exciting theories.

    I was telling my Cousin about this not so long ago, im glad you made this video and structured it better than I could have, another point i brought up that you can lean on is in Dark Souls the Age of Dragons was defined as one without difference, same as the Flame of Frenzy is trying to achieve, and this difference was brought in by the age that ruled after, the age of Fire by Gwyn, if the age of the Dragons was before the Golden Order we can assume that just like in Dark Souls it can be regarded as the age that didn't have seperation or difference

      i think the mistake that the greater will made was allowing the nox to have freedom to the point they made the finger slayer blade and with that blade they severed him in 2 and put a curse of fracture where things keep fracturing, thus you need goldmask rune because otherwise you get the fracture ending
      in this theory the golden star known as the elden beast was sent because after the finger slayer split him he lost control of the lands between and he has to create the erdtree to regain some control over the world, the nox seem to be connected to the number and seem to have a long conspiracy to usurp god

    I keep hearing "Two fingers plus three fingers equals five fingers" and I've always felt uncomfortable about that. Do we all see four fingers in the Two Fingers Heirloom? And it always looked to me like the Two Fingers in Roundtable hold were severed "at the wrist"
    Not to mention we keep assuming Earth's evolution in this game. Maybe the Two Fingers are called that in-game because they indeed resemble fingers, but they could be a life-form that looks like fingers but has nothing to do with the fingers of humanoid beings in Elden Ring. Just a thought
    Even the passing idea of the Fingers being primordial life from which all other things with fingers evolved makes more sense to me (even if only in passing lol)
    Maybe thinking of them as actual fingers is nonsense, and somehow forcing a pair of Two Fingers to spring a third finger is what engendered madness

    I came to a pretty similar conclusion before watching your video.
    My idea is that the original Crucible was the impact crater of the Golden Meteor sent by the One Great (later re-written to be the Greater Will, we know the Golden Order rewrites history). Sort of a panspermia idea, dragons (aka, dinosaurs) came from the space goo carried in the Golden Meteor.
    However, even before that, there was already life in the Lands Between, in the form of the Beast Society. The Greater Will, or the One Great (we don't know when the fracture happened) enslaved these beasts and made them to be servants of the dragons. Eventually, the GW abandoned Placidusax for unknown reasons, and chose Marika as its next inner god.
    I also suspect the Dragons evolved into the Stormhawks of Limgrave, or that they are tangentially related somehow. Greyoll has feather.

They're found all across the map, including Raya Lucaria and the Volcano Manor. Whether they're guarding their masters or hunting their prey, it's not clear.
      Given Blaidd's extreme devotion to Ranni, I assume that Bloodhound Knight Darriwill betrayed one of the members of Ranni's special task force. Unfortunately, despite their title as bloodhounds and their feral movements, I couldn't find a connection between them and the beasts of Farum Azula.

    I feel generally good about the idea that the Two and Three Fingers symbolize an original entity being divided, but there is a big "But".
    For example, if we believe that there were some ancient Five Fingers speaking for the One God, the division of said God would also be an interesting idea to explain why the modern Fingers are so sickly and monstrous: It wasn't their Natural state, they became like this following their God condition.
    But at the same time, it feels "strange" that the Dragon's God was the same of Humans before it went a bit nuts.
    We don't know much Dragon's culture or society, but they definitely don't look like they were simply ruling over the Crucible.
    Similarly, the big defining War of Marika's conquest was against the Giants, not the Dragons, and Giants' God is entirely unrelated.
    Also, all the motifs of duality to me seem to be about mortals trying to fit within the Logic/outside the Logic of the Order, not about the upper beings like the Elden Beast or the Outer Gods.
    Overall, it's an interesting interpretation but there are some weak links.
    The part about Beastmen and Dragons fitting within the same culture is interesting tho. I wish there was more about the Age of Dragons (?)

    Eh, interesting theory, but it's got some holes.
    The lightning connection to the Golden Order for example. Dragon lightning is red not gold, it's the Dragon Cult's lightning that was made specifically to mimic the Dragon's that is gold.
    While I agree the Shadowbound are likely natives of Faurum they're probably not really connected to the Greater Will directly. It's far more likely the Golden Order supplanted or defeated the Dragon's God and the Greater Will enslaved specific beasts as Shadowbound to watch over it's top agents (and kill them if needed). The Greater Will is kind of like a cancer or parasite when you actually pay attention to it's lore so it taking the tools and servants from another God by force is pretty in line with it's other actions. It's pretty obvious from Blaidd's fate that they are ultimately slaves not willing servants.
    The One Great is also described not as a combination of gods, but the primordial amalgamation from which literally _all_ things come from. Not just divine, _everything_ that lives was once part of it. It's less an entity or being and more along the lines of cosmic soup that all of reality came from. It never ruled over anything because when it existed there was nothing to rule over only it. Just *One.*
    Further the only real connection between the Flames of Frenzy and the Greater Will is that they directly oppose one another and are actively hostile to each other's goals. Beyond that they don't really have anything in common and the Flame has no connection to Faurum at all as it's ability to reignite the Flame of Ruin isn't unique to it.
    As for the Two Fingers (and thus Greater Will) connection to Farum that's even flimsier. Melina is very specifically acting _against_ the Greater Will's objectives when she lights the Flame of Ruin, the Two Finger don't help her with that seeing as 1) they're comatose at the time 2) the entire thing is done to _circumvent_ the Greater Will's designs and 3) Melina isn't a real Finger Maiden she's just "playing the part" of one. It's something about her specifically, likely her being the Dusk Eyed Queen and thus an Empyrean of a completely different God, that lets her light the Flame. It's doubtful any normal Finger Maiden could of done what Melina manages.
    The only real information we get from either Melina or us relighting the Flame of Ruin is that an Empyrean can rekindle it. If anything the entire sequence it implies there is some connection between the Giant's Flame God and Faurum's God.

    Also, it could be that the meteor that struck Farum Azula was the same one that was carrying the Elden Beast? Observing the gravitational anomaly when the star fell into Limgrave, it could explain why Farum Azula is floating and NOT spinning like the tornadoes, and it would implie that it once was part of the main land, thus explaining the similar topography, architecture and beast remnants that we found across the Lands Between.
    Also, it could be that the Red lighting of the ancient dragons is more "primordial" thus referring to a time before the Eardtree?

    • @VLimit11
      @VLimit11  2 года назад +1

      It think it's very plausible that it was the same meteorite, and I love your other points as well. The Dragonbarrow in Caelid might be the original location of Farum Azula, given how close the two are to each other and the aspects they share like the dragons and the Bestial Sanctum.
      The primordial nature of the red lightning is also a good catch. Ordovis, one of the Crucible nights, drops a sword that reads:
      "Its red tint exemplifies the nature of primordial gold, said to be
      close in nature to life itself."
      I think there's a strong chance that this connection was intentional. These are some great points you have here

      Here's a theory . Maby they are made? I mean there are hand enemies. And the largest or second largest have decorative rings on them. Who's to say these hands don't become fingers eventually? Each demi God save for Renalla have two fingers associated with their towers (also are they alive while their respective God's are alive and only die when we kill them? Also does this sever some kind of connection to the greater will, like the more demi God's we kill the less fingers there are on towers and as the greater will realizes these lost connections does it set other events into play to stop us?) ranni has hers underground by her body and then there's the three fingers. There's also the one in the hub.

    I also believe that they were ONE hand previously, and separating them (fracture) its what they meant when all trouble started. BUT also looking at the hand you can see that the two fingers are the two middle fingers of a hand and the three fingers are the other fingers, this was done on purpose as they could of just show any fingers at random. (because an ALIEN can have 7 fingers in different order...also this is another concept and another story, whats up with the 10 finger hands running around?, but that is for another time). Also another thing to say its how even tho THREE fingers is the majority in the hand, the TWO fingers is running a mock with everyone blindly following. ..(sounds familiar). .....IMO.

    the two fingers Iji referred to may not be the interpreter of the greater will, though the one in round table hall is, Ranni tells us that she and the twin prodigies were each given their own two fingers for being empereons, candidates to replace marika in the coming age. We learn from Malania's remembrance and her spell that she has a connection to an outer god of rot, and will ascend to become a god, though she does so through the outer god of rot, while ranni has her own ending where she starts the age under the god of the dark moon. Why would all two fingers be bound to the greater will and none to other gods?

    Maybe Radagon's Elden Ring is like a five fingered hand who has lost three (or two) fingers, and therefore is more simple than the other one, which is like a complete set of fingers.
    But then those five fingers, or should we say One Great, was the oneness, the crucible. A crucible, figuratively speaking, is when disparities are fused together. Only virtue and other positive traits remain. The three fingers need to fuse together with the two fingers, chaos and order, flame of frenzy and greater will. That would be a real crucible, but one "crucible" as the one the three fingers alone can achieve would be flawed.

    One thing I’m curious about is the reason for the one great splitting in the first place. The common theme of duality/twins in Elden ring bears a strong resemblance to the idea of Yin and yang in eastern religions. And the idea wherein is that the world must exist in perfect balance. In Elden ring the law of cause and effect has become dominant through the 2 fingers and even tho the games conflict revolves around the Elden ring being shattered we know that the preceding conflict was to do with the war between the dragons and the erd tree with the dragons wanting to return to a place of balance and the erd tree seeking its own new order. So if the world was in perfect balance before then the only reason I can see for the five fingers splitting must be due to a conflict between outer gods.
    Last thing I want to note is that the flame of frenzy wanting to return the world to one is, I believe, some what misleading as if the primordial state of the world was the crucible then that also seemed to be a time ruled by the five fingers where the world would have been in balance and there were still individual entities (the dragons) but they were more connected to each other, perhaps through spirit, instead of being physically burnt into one like in the frenzied flame ending.

    • @tristantully1592

      Maybe the Frienzed Flame is chaotic in the sense that it pursues a flawed regression into one. After all we can see the Greater Will is also pursuing a flawed order as well.

    This video made me very happy. Finally someone discusses the 5 fingers! sheesh was it so hard to extrapolate? lol (berserk's god-hand cmon!)
    I'd like to share a couple oddservations:
    The necks of Placidusax don't just point straight up, although definitely in similar vain as the two-fingers. They twist around each other. This imagery is shown again in the warped bodies of marika and radagon when they are formed into the Elden Beast's sword. More broadly I see this imagery to symbolically represent DNA. But also when considering the drapery around marika's statues and the runes in general, the infinity sign is at play in iterations.
    The nature of the crucible/erd tree... will answer some of the questions left in your vid. It is my understanding that the crucible is the "machine" that the Elden Beast is operating. It functions by absorbing all lifeforms on a planet (that already existed buddy) and decides to take control of the most dominant form so it can effectively terraform a world for the Greater Will. (One Great = Greater Will. Just nomenclature of different ages. Differentiated only to illustrate a different state of being. Satisfying the concept of the One Great is actually ultimate self-destructive actualization.) The crucible calculated that the dragons were the most dominant force. But it did make a mistake. Dragon's weren't the most dominant life form. It seems the dragons faced defeat before the power change? tho i don't think this was the battle at layendell at all. It is possible there was no defeating battle. Just the removal of the mistaken society (by hoarah loux's storm most likely). The crucible was actually able to change hosts. It realized the Great Tree of life was the baddest source of power, as it held all disembodied souls while they waited to be reincarnated. What's more, numen and humans are more dominant than Dragons, not for power, but for adaptability. Adaptability is the final form of dominance. Not raw strength.
    Everything red is symbolic of the crucible as they existed in a time much more closer in proximity to the original crucible. (aside from blood/thorn magics) Red lightning, red-gold armor of the crucible knights, red in the frenzy flame, red in the black flame. The energy of the crucible changed when it abandoned the dragons and took full form as the Erd Tree.
    The One Great did not create life. At all. It's terraforming-machine absorbed all local lifeforms and crunched the numbers. Its parasitic nature is the cause for all the magical backwardness in the world. Aspects of the crucible are aspects of Dragons. Like all good symbiotes it has to adapt itself to the host or it will kill it too fast. I believe this was the reason for the severing of 3 fingers (necks), clearly a very powerful source of energy it just did not need anymore. Another more speculative reason, unbeknownst to Hyetta... the greater will has abandoned this planet. What does a crazy smart powerful god of manipulation/destruction/order do when it decides a planet is no longer compatible? Oh!... self-destruct mechanism ofc! Humanity will draw it's own meaning and ritual from the actions needed to take to set off the Erd-Tree bomb. What is meant by "we must return what has been taken." Tongue-in-cheek "fuck you" to the Greater Will. But they very well could simply be executing the final directive from the Greater Will. Destroy the failed experiment.
    The Elden Beast's appearance is more telling than people give it credit for. Certainly not an amorphous blob as it appears at first glance. It has wings from the time of dragons. It has the frame and arms (not of a human) of the Giants (who I believe are also the source of the Fingers' form in this age). It has the roots at its base, like the tree, and a wound on its lower abdomen, like the - as of yet unexplained! - wound on marika. Whoever, however, wounded Marika and the Elden Beast simultaneously. But I digress. The elden beast shows its history in its form. You are what you eat?
    Two cents check!

    I just want to say out right, the god that placidusax is waiting for isnt an outer god but a god in the same way marika is a god.
    he was his gods consort. an elden lord. something very over looked.
    considering the fact that he uses golden flames and is referred to as elden lord makes me think that the outer god he worshiped was the greater will.
    in the same way marika and radagon need to be replaced, perhaps his needed replacing and/or fled.

    There are two interesting points here:
    1. If it’s true that the more complex elden ring in maliketh’s boss arena is related to the One Great, before the One Great split into the Greater Will and Frenzied Flame as embodiments of order and chaos, then the question remains as to how it could be that “the Greater Will sent a beast into the Lands Between which became the Elden Ring.”
    2. The term “beast” seems very highly charged in elden ring, so assuming they were consistent in using the same word in the japanese as well, then it’s interesting that the Elden Beast is described specifically as a beast. Obviously it has 5 fingers, but choosing to call it a beast implies it may have other connections to maliketh, serosh, blaidd, and the beasts of Farum Azula

    About the more complex Elden Ring symbol in Farm Azula: The parts that are absent in the actual, current incarnation of the Elden Ring look very much like roots or branches. Although one might think about the Erdtree, I'm pretty sure this symbol predates it.
    Considering that the Greater Will is an entity of Order, it would actively try to "tidy things up", trying to eliminate everything that doesn't fit its system. The dragons, the beastmen, the Giants, anything that won't fit in or submit is wiped out or excluded from the system.
    It's possible that this symbol in Farm Azula represents the Elden Ring equivalent of the time, the "code of reality" before the Elden Beast came. When the Crucible was in its original form, possibly, before it was hijacked and turned into the Erdtree.
