- We weren't able to spend this past summer in Canada for obvious reasons, so we've really been missing Canada these days. We have a little folder of 'unreleased Canada footage' and thought it would be nice to share this hot mess of a day of Kyuho and I making chicken pot pie with my mom :)

Your mom is so sweet, Sarah. And she’s a natural in front of the camera. I can hear her East coast accent- “right Purdy” totally made me giggle. Hope your parents are well and staying safe. I know we have new pandemic restrictions in NB- N.S. is in similar spot.
Btw, pastry is cooled because the gluten needs to relax + the fat (whether lard or butter) needs to harden again to make rolling out thin possible. 👍🏼.

Mmmm chicken/turkey pot pie is such a good comfort food especially on those colder days!
It has to be cold water (ice water is best) to keep the butter (or in this case lard) cold so that when you bake the crust those little lumps of fat melt and it gets delcious and flakey. If you use warm or hot butter it'll just melt it and then you get a sad crust. THats also why it goes back in the fridge- to keep it cold.
That makes perfect sense! 😮 No one wants sad crust after all!

Here, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania that is called "Chicken Pie" because it's made in a pie crust. Here, "Chicken Pot Pie" is the chicken, and chopped potatoes, carrots, onions and peas and gravy and really wide noodles. No crust. Look up Pennsylvania Dutch chicken pot pie recipes. We're known for recipes from the Amish people, also know the Pennsylvania Dutch (Dutch in their language actually means Deutsch which means German). Look up how to make Pennsylvania soft pretzels, and whoopie pies. They are pretty darn awesome.
The water needs to be cold so the shortening doesn’t melt! The flakes are the spaces where the shortening used to be but melted during the baking process. If the shortening melts before the bake, no flake! Looks delicious :D

Omg watching your mom running the kitchen reminded me of my mom so much! We are in the same boat, haven't been back to the U.S. since 2018, hang in there! I have been coping by cooking home dishes as best I can out here, esp since we are staying home so much. 2021 is looking a lot brighter than 2020 :)

When I make chicken pot pie I make a chicken gravy to use not a can of soup and only peas,carrots and potatoes never green beans, I guess everyone has their own recipe.👏🏼👍🏻❤️
Yes! My mom does that too with her own gravy when she bakes a turkey or chicken and mixes it with one can of soup. Her gravy is delicious😋
I think you can make your own version - you can use lard (animal fat) or shortening (vegetable fat) towards the crust. Also never knew about the milk wash before, going to try that next time.
Minced meat pie and pot pies are yummy for sure.
Sarah, did you ever think to try and make it at home (korea)? So long as you make pie dough, you can even make a hand held version like a pop tart.
Your mom’s crusts are divine. So tender and flaky. Lard really is the secret ingredient for pie crusts. I also make a mean chicken pot pie. I do make my own gravy using chicken stock, roux, and a little cream. I also use mixed vegetables as well as the holy trinity (sautéed onions, celery, and carrots). Now you’ve gone and made me want a chicken pot pie! And the day after Thanksgiving, too! 🤣😂 Might make a turkey pot pie. 🧐😊 Your mom is so sweet and cute, as well as a good cook. Nothing like mom’s cooking, is there?

Im also from Nova Scotia(cape breton) and have been living in Korea for almost 5 years! This has been a hard year and im incredibly homesick! So being able to watch this brang me a lot of joy ! I especially loved that east coast slang " right purrdy" 🤣

저도 초등학생때 몇년 캐나다에서 살았었는데요 십몇년이 지난 아직까지도 정말 그리운 음식이 있다면 whole food라는 마켓에서 파는 블루베리파이가 너무 먹고싶어요ㅜ 한국에서 파는 블루베리파이는 거의 위에 블루베리를 얹어놓기만 하는 타르트 같은 개념이라 정말 안이 블루베리로 꽉꽉차있는 블루베리 파이가 넘 그립네요

We have savory pies in Romania. They're filled mostly with cheese, though meat and cheese is another popular option. Other fillings are: spinach (stolen from the Greeks, i believe, haha, VERY delicious; usually the spinach is mixed with cheese), mushrooms (not as great, more bland when it comes to flavor/taste), and i don't know if we have any other savory pies.
When it comes to sweet pies, we have sweet cheese pie - mixed with raisins, then apple, pumpkin, berries. And the cheese pie is not the same as cheese cake. The pie has flaky dough, both on the bottom and on the top, whereas the cake has (usually) crumbly crust only on the bottom.
