Pablo (PHDDZGT). I'm from the Memphis Smash scene, and we owe our survival and thriving from the end of Brawl, into Smash 4, and until he had to move away for school and career reasons. While he was great in his own right, his real legacy was helping grow TOs around him to carry the torch when we had higher demand for tournaments than we had hands to run them, and then to keep charging forward even after he left.
Grassroots, man.

We'd already banned Pipes but MLG hadn't so we stole easy wins by going Fox/Falco there and beat Ken/Isai and others at MLG Finals 2004
FC6 was another turning point, there were a few borderline stages on the cutting block that made it in by virtue of the status quo, then I 3-stocked KDJ twice on neutrals and he took me to Peach's Castle for Round 5, so I'd had enough of those.

One note is that the Round Robin formula you cited is something I heavily appropriated and utilized after seeing JuggleGuy post it in a smashboards blog post. As much as I'd love to take credit for creating the formula, I have to shout out one of the GOAT TOs for being the real source of the contribution.

"Thanks for including me" says one of the all-time greats. 👏👏👏 I was a TO for a monthly in Memphis, and lemme tell you dude. Your generation of TOs had laid out so many tools and precedents at the feet of fledgling tournament organizers that just a casual perusing of Smashboards rocketed our tournament standards. Doing in months what we thought would take us years. Popularizing developments and making them easy to understand are huuuuge for small scene TOs.
Don't worry Matt, if history books don't decorate you as a TO, they'll decorate you for showing us all the efficacy of f-smashing 3+ times in a row.

I see that you have team heir on the honourable mentions but I think Kone deserves to be on this list himself ( IMO #1 GOAT) This man put the whole of Europe on his back, broke smash gg sign up records, changed peoples whole idea of what a tournament could be and how it should be run. I think if you ever went to an heir event it's easy to see why. Even Aiden himself thinks he's #1:P

Very glad to see the Ship of Fools rank so high on the list. I never attended one of their tournaments but I met them a few times at various Show Me Your Moves events and they were always very fun and welcoming. Aside from their obvious ancient-era contributions, they also ran Melee FC10R, a unique, throwback event in 2012 with a top 8 round robin and the final legal appearances of Mute City and Brinstar at top-level play. If those stages sound bad, the legendary quintuple knee by Darkrain might convince you otherwise.
I'd also like to shout out the organizers of hf.lan, which I attended while living in France a few years ago. It was a very chill and smooth event with lots of interesting, unique features (those hf.lan cups from the bar, the venue's piano, the post-pools ladder, the national crew battle I almost played in despite being very bad because there were barely enough Americans) and I'm sad I didn't get to attend any others!
Oh, also shout-outs to Armada for his contributions to European Smash in general and also all the smaller-time TOs within Europe! I know Europe has fewer elite players as the States, but you can still find active scenes (I would go to monthlies in Lille, which brought a lot of France's strongest players as well as occasional competition from Belgium; I also went to a Stockholm monthly while on vacation in Sweden) with people who love the game and are happy to hang out and play. And for most of us, that's what really matters most!

I think TO’s are so incredibly important people that have sacrificed to dedicate their lives to Melee, and this video really does them justice.

Great video Allston! I've always loved the dedication the TOs have done to each smash game, and especially on Melee. You guys went in-depth and I learned so many new things and got somewhat emotionally because I can't stop smiling for the work they have done. Underappreciated and I am happy you mentioned the local TOs, as without them I wouldn't be here in the first place. So again, thank you for the video.

Another shout out to Dendy Pretendy who made Verdugo west happen, he kept the melee scene alive and well in the 818 area that no one else held tournaments in. legends

After 10 years watching Melee events, I finally hosted my first 8 entrants Ultimate invitational at home ^^
I'm glad that I could use all the tools left for me by these amazing folks. I'm hoping to create a new smash community in an empty european region!

You should try to do what I do at our Ultimate events and leave Melee set up in the corner for people to try, even if it's just on a laptop.
I believe Apex 2015 was the first to have 1000 entrants, not evo 2015, but that's just a nitpick tbh. Great video, appreciation for TOs is awesome!

Other than obligatory local TO's from my region, 2003 wasn't the first events, and they weren't only held by Gamestop. I entered and won a Penn State University tournament in 2002, that was timed (no stocks), free for all with items on until the finals. Not the same format, but a tournament nonetheless

Love the vids, but Juggleguy should be top 2 imo, but that’s probably MI bias. His events are so properly run, he keeps volunteers on a freakin schedule.

For what it's worth, I agree!
All the volunteers were run by a separate team, Stop Your Friendlies, and pretty much all supermajors used this exact team to handle the volunteers. This group was pretty much the reason day1 pools are smoother than ever.

Ngl. Respect to all these people but I should be on here. I ran a tourney exclusively for new people. The tournament started 2 hrs late because I waited for players who were running late. I then put all 16 players in one round Robin pool for seeding. Then ran a double elim bracket. Still finished early.

is it just me or does it feel like a solid amount of judgments in this list were made off of things entirely unrelated to TO'ing... makes ya think. I get that some external stuff can be impactful but for a list of TOs it feels more like a ranking of people who happen to be TOs based on their general impact to the scene as a whole instead of a ranking of TOs at TOing.
A "technical TOing" video would be pretty interesting ngl. Like, who has 1) attempted the most absurd stuff 2) innovated and how 3) great event execution
