  • Karen Silkwood was a lab technician and union activist at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron Facility in Oklahoma. While there she had witnessed employee safety concerns as well as some alleged fraud. She was on her way to Oklahoma City to report her findings when things mysteriously changed. Karen's story was also told in the movie Silkwood.

Karen Silkwood did not die in vain .. a few years after her death a movie was made 'Silkwood' with Meryl Streep, 1983, I owned an industrial refrigeration company at the time... I saw the movie, without any thought of selling the business or consulting... but knew somehow that I would I would get involved, the movie had enraged me that much.
I ended up selling the business a year later then began consulting, one of my early projects was at the Handford nuclear weapons reservation in Hanford eastern washington state.. I had done a few other nuclear related projects earlier and told one of the engineers there about Karen Silkwood, and that I wanted to get into a similarly corrupt plant just so I could look those people in the eye... he asked me if i was serious... 6 months later I was at the Plutonium Finishing plant at Hanford...it had notorious issues, whistle blowers were numerous and silenced..
I was asked to sign off safety surveys on many of the facilities there without my personal inspection (a patsy position I am not a nuclear systems engineer)
At a meeting to discuss some of these issues I was called into a meeting with several of the managers, and other staff at which I was told to clam up or I would have a very difficult time ever getting another job anywhere doing anything.
I kept investigating and remembered what happened to Karen, shortly after I was ask to leave the site.... those morons let me take a huge box full of papers and floppy disc out with me... then a day later they called me at the motel I was staying at.. stuttering and semi coherent and ask "wwwhat wwwas in tthat Bbbig box you tttook with you"... then I was visited by two armed agents with gun butts visible under their jackets.....
I told them that I ate a lot of baloney sandwiches, and they had many slices of baloney in them and they were very very heavy, and since the site had been declassified under the SALT agreement..that I also had the right to take copies of my work product with me.... that they were no longer in my possession. (they were at the copy shop)
Remembering Karen I made 6 or 8 copies of the material and floppy discs... sent them all around with a note that if I did not call or write them every year with a full comment on what the code was, to drop the package in the mail (pre addressed). That is called a dead mans letter.
I called Mary, Westinghouse Hanford Presidents secretary at the time...I asked her to tell her boss that if I ended up with a hang nail, or an itcy arse, or carbuckle, or a bullet hole in my head, all 6 of those packages would go into the mail. Then I called their lead attorney, forgot his name, Duggan or something like that, he laughed at me over the phone.
A few years later, I testified before the US congress for 2 and a half hours about what was going on at that 530 square mile facility..
One year later Westinghouse Hanford lost their 5 billion dollar a year contract. Dugan or whatever his name was ceased laughing. Tom Carpenter, attorney at the Govt accountability project in Kennewick filed a law suit on my behalf, and i got a cash settlement and letter of commendation from the Dept of Energy for doing such fine work.
Karens father also sued, and received a 6.5 million dollar judgement for the death of his daughter, who at the time was said to be found with a bullet hole in her head.. (that account is now apparently white washed away leaving out any mention of a bullet hole in her head).
I thanked Karens father who was living in Texas at the time, with tears in my eyes for her contribution...I took a different approach than Karen did, I learned from her mistake, putting a bullet in my head would not have worked out well for that scum.... and i have passed it on. (the dead letter approach).
Since then we have Julian Assange and wiki leaks on even more serious issues. the swamp is murderously nasty, cowards to the core.
Its been over 30 years I might have the time line screwed up a bit, and i am an old man now... 78... 5 years ago I was in a small mayan village in guatemala, eating a shrimp cocktail and met a man and his Mayan wife...he recognized me and we talked, he is currently still working on exposing that site.

Then you likely know about the Hanford Archives which were dedicated July 25, 1996, and open to the public, Philip. The information there was incredible as to what really went on in that plant. Surprisingly, they lost their funding after only one year. The last I heard, all the files were in a basement at Gonzaga. There were hundreds of letters from people who worked there, letters from people who developed cancer, letters from downwinders (of which I am one!), etc.

    • @Phil_Scott
      @Phil_Scott 5 лет назад +23

@@GlennaVan . I am sorry to hear that. The downwind experiments were about as murderously evil as the the US govt sponsoring live syphilis bacteria injections into 2500 or so Guatemalan men telling them it was beneficial when the real reason was to study the morbidity in them, their wives and children over a 20 year period...with no treatment as the disease continues to take its gruesome toll even today.. same with the down winders...do we have follow up studies documented on the results? or is that still whitewashed over?
There is a larger picture from what I can tell... a pattern ... I called it the octopus when i was testifying.... it is ruining america's integrity to sub basement levels.. I think if we knew the extent of what is going on we would throw up.... some of us know, hopefully it will be exposed as promised lately.
I wish you Gods speed, in spades Glenna...and highest level spiritual communion. that I believe is the only way out...one must transcend it, then it goes the way of all corruption, it self destructs.

I remember watching this movie in the theater. I'm not sure if I had seen Meryl Streep act before, but this is my first memory of her in a film. Just 3 years prior I had watched the movie "The China Syndrome" that included a fantastic performance by Jack Lemmon. I had grown suspicious of the nuclear power industry while I was in high school in the 1960's when I became aware of the problems of nuclear waste. There was a huge marketing effort in the 1960's declaring nuclear power as a miraculous technology promising it would be a magic bullet for all of humanity. After reading some articles about the challenge of managing nuclear waste I asked my dad what he thought of nuclear power. He was a very far right conservative and like so many men who grew up during the Great Depression, was enamored by wealth and opportunities to make money. At the time, he had been a aerospace engineer for nearly 30 years and was working on the Apollo project. He said "any device that uses something more toxic than anything on earth, which depends on a safety system designed, built and operated by humans, is not a good idea." He mentioned that fraud and safety shortcuts would become a large factor. I think back and am amazed by his insight and frank words, despite his political and personal perspective.
With this experience and my reading I watched these two films. I was not surprised. The fact that the movie "Silkwood" was based on a true story made me quite angry. As time has passed I have become more and more suspicious of large corporations.
This is an excellent video and I hope it gets a lot of views. This story should never die.

Unless they have something to gain and no fear of prosecution they wont. You NEVER tell anyone what you're up to if you suspect corruption. A lot of people hated her and wanted her dead at the time when she started trying to expose the company. Coworkers living in rural Oklahoma would have hated her feeling like she's trying to shut down one of the few companies that gave them much need jobs and of course the company owners themselves. Karen Silkwood did good for the people, but unfortunately some will Never see it that way. Her coworkers some of them hated her and saw her as that woman that cost them their jobs and the company owners definitely hated her and wanted her dead for obvious reasons.
When you're corrupt the last thing you want is to be exposed. So you make the whistle blower disappear. I feel like too many either hasted her or were too fearful for their own lives to come forward if they knew anything. An for good reason since she was murdered, they knew they'd be next if they said anything. Whistle blowers should always be very secretive for their own safety. Your coworkers are NOT your friends and that's true of any place you work. People will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat if they think this help keep their job secure or to move up in the company. Karen Silkwood did a good thing but she was very naïve and let everyone know what she was doing.

Someone may very well have been trying to kill her. But the bent wheel is 100% not evidence of that. She could have woken up as her axel hit that first part of the barrier.
The evidence that someone was trying to kill her is the contamination outside of work. It sounds like someone contaminated her apartment and eventually gave her roommate cancer as well.

Over twenty years ago I was a freelance videographer, and as such I spent a great deal of time videotaping depositions for lawsuits. One such lawsuit involved Farmland Industries. During the months I spent working on this job I witnessed the depositions of hundreds of employees that had worked there during the 70's and 80's. Included were the Presidents of the company. I remember one in particular: James L Rainey. I remember him because of how uncomfortable I was around him. He sucked all the air out of the room when he came in. His eyes looked black and he showed a TOTAL lack of emotion during the three days they questioned him. When the attorney for the plaintiff asked me later what I thought of him I told him I'd rather spend a week with the devil than another hour in that man's presence. He laughed and said off handily, "You know he was president of Kerr Mcgee when Karen Silkwood died , right?" I told him I had no idea, but after meeting him, it left no doubt in my mind that Karen's death was no accident. I later learned he was brought into Farmland specifically for his ability to, "cut the cooperate fat." It's what he was good at because he didn't care who lost their jobs as long as the company rebounded. I enjoyed your video. Looking forward to watching more.

So many people speak against large corporations and lay-offs, but do nothing but complain and are not willing to sacrifice for their fellow American job. I would be willing to pay $10.00 more for an air-conditioner to keep them being made here and my fellow American brother and sisters employed or pay 25 cents more for gas to keep my fellow oil and gas grunts working to put food on the table, but most people will not, hence the booming Walmart. It became a neighborhood , but they sold off the land between 2 chemical plants. My mother still lives there , but there has been so many people that has died of cancer or has some kind of cancer or illness from living in that neighborhood. I moved away when I was about 19 , but my husband and I moved back into that neighborhood when I was about 24 . We lived there for 11 years. My husband and I both got cancer , but thank the Lord we survived it . My step dad got throat cancer , but he died about 5 years ago . A month after he died their neighbor died of throat cancer. 2 other men down the road from my parent's also had or has throat cancer. There's several more that have died of cancer and I just found out about a young man that grew up there has cancer too . My mother even got a notice in the mail a few years ago telling them that their water may or may not be contaminated . They all have well water . I have told her she better get out of there , but she has had so many strokes and plus she's lost her leg and the sight out of her right eye do to diabetes. So I quess she wants to live out her last few days where her home is. In my opinion they all need to leave that neighborhood and sew the crap out of those companies.

The movie is good but they show her in a sort of country type house and she was never in that. I wanted to show all the actual places since it was never filmed here. The American Legion building that was in this is the actual location where the Doctors and Scientists came to speak to the employees about the dangers of plutonium. If you search you can find audio of Karen speaking inside there. The building really hasn't changed. But there are a couple audio pieces where you can hear her speaking and she doesn't have the accent that Meryl Streep used. It's interesting to see the differences in the movie and real life.
