This is 10000X better then what the ride is now. This actually has a story and imagination. Now it just is like a random acid trip to the doctors going through the 6 senses or somthing
This was the perfect version of the ride. Not the second, not the current, it’s this one! Disney needs to return it
It would be amazing to see this version brought back, Hopefully one day
That is likely never going to happen. As amazing as this attraction was, its major design flaws which caused its closure in the first place cannot be ignored. Disney would have to empty out the entire first floor, as the original ride had a longer and much different structure. Not to mention, engineers and imagineers would have to craft an entirely new track design since the other was majorly flawed. We cannot forget that Disney is a money making corporation. Returning this ride to its original glory would take time and money that Disney probably will never be willing to spend. I would not get your hopes up. It is more likely that the building will be themed to _Inside Out_ than the restoration of Journey Into Imagination, as heartbreaking as that is.
That’s why I’m thinking of becoming an imagineer to make sure it comes back
@ScareToonz What makes you think that? Disney is not going to temporarily remove a ride from their park for years to change it to a more unreliable version. Epcot barley has rides as it is, they cant risk having that closed down for a prolonged period of time. It is cheaper to just re-skin the ride to something else than it is to remove millions of moneys worth of a ride then put in a new ride costing MILLIONS.

I still randomly find myself singing this song. I loved this ride. It’s not bogged down with pop culture references or marketing product/franchise placement. It’s just pure chaotic inspiration. Every time I went on this ride or this song would pop into my head I would think “I have all this in my head right now! And I can do whatever I want with all these ideas. And no one can stop me!” Even now, I still get that excited over the ideas that pop into my head!
If the current Disney leadership was in charge at the time, this ride would have been nothing but an extended ad for Kodak.
Yes, Making Memories was little more than a Kodak promotion, but at least it was just a brief side show and it didn't infest the main attractions of the pavilion.

@@princessmarlena1359 yes! I always figured that’s why they had to shut it down. I do art projects at work while I’m on break and it always confuses the hell out of me that people get so freaked out that they can’t identify exactly what I’m doing. It freaks them out so much that they sometimes get angry about it or even scared. I mean it’s just building with popsicle sticks and Elmer’s glue…or cardboard, clear packaging tape, and clip art. I’m always experimenting with something. I don’t do crafts. I experiment with various materials. Combine seemingly unrelated techniques that I just learned about yesterday. I don’t know what I’m doing, so at best I only have a very vague goal and no deadline. But it really freaks people out. I don’t know why. I’m on break. Mind your own business. Their inevitable meltdown always confuses me. And then I look back at this ride and think, maybe that’s why they took it down. Unbridled epic creativity is terrifying to normal adults. It doesn’t follow their code of compliance. It’s not low profile. It’s not safe. And the people in charge of Disney (not the creative team but the board members and management) probably don’t like the idea of unbridled creativity. How do you fix that? You tether creativity to well designed pre-fabricated relatable concepts like characters.

This was everything to me when i went to Disney and epcot in 87. It was during their 15th celebration. I was obsessed with Figment. The only real vacation i went on as a kid. First time on a plane. Staying in a hotel for the first time. A lot of these memories are coming back to me after watching this. Thank you for posting

I'm currently at Disney World for the first time in 27 years, since I was a kid, and after hitting the old faves that are still around I was so excited to visit Figment again only to discover something I had no memory of and was extremely disappointing. At first I thought my memory was distorted from the years since and my experience as a child and the disparity was so jarring I actually got weirdly emotional. Just so you know, finding this video upload made me feel so much better because my memory WASN'T incorrect. The ride had just been gutted. It makes me very sad that I can't revisit it, but it's cathartic to see that it did once exist this way, and it's preserved here. Thank you
Its a very sad sight the latest reimagining of the ride and I cannot believe this 3rd version of the attraction is now over 20 years old with the original and best version only lasting 15 years 😔, Enjoy the rest of your vacation at Walt Disney World
I think the imagineers had no imagination when they created the 2.0 version. NOTHING.

@@fridaythe13thsquadlive61 it was re-done as an offhand, low budget, almost afterthought sort of thing. Think Disney strait to home video releases from the 90s. The time, energy, and money just wasn't focused on the project that it deserved the second time round... Unfortunately, I think they vastly underestimated the appeal the original had and the love people had for it. It also lost much of the storytelling and whimsical aspects that made it so great. When it first opened again it didn't even have figment... They put it out as a low budget space filler...
To be fair, they wanted it to be much more, but Kodak couldn’t supply them with enough money, so they went with the terrible version we got.
@Java Cake It's not Kodaks responsibility to do anything with the ride. Theme parks can use sponsors when they think a ride is going to be really good, and the upfront investment by the sponsor is made up for by having their name on a cool ride.
If Disney did not think Kodak was going to give them enough money for what they wanted, either find another sponsor or pay for your own ride yourself.

Thats crazy that you recorded this in October 1998. The ride was only open for 10 days that month before it closed. You were one of the last riders of that ride.

I was a kid when I went to Disney World in 1983 (and went several times in the 80s and once in the 90s). I miss the original version. Glad I can relive it through RUclips. I still have my Figment Piggy Bank I got in 1983 (we were there in June, a few months after the ride opened). I still remember the song to this day. That's how awesome the ride was. I totally remember Figment and Dreamfinder taking pictures of us and then going to Image Works. Thanks for sharing!! 🙂

WOW This is quite the coincidence! I was at Epcot in June of 1983 as well. We may have crossed paths or missed each other entirely, as I can't remember the exact day we were there. I still have my Figment figurine I got that day, and its still in near pristine condition having been kept inside since I got it. He still has both his horns, wings, and color. The date on it says 1982 Disney, so one can speculate it must have been made for the expected grand opening of the ride along with many other items.
the current Figment popcorn bucket craze will hopefully remind Disney how beloved Figment is

This is such an under appreciated attraction. I think its also stuck in the middle of no where. LOL. Love Figment and thw whole concept. Thanks for the share Dave.

The last MONTH of operation
This ride helped spark my creativity as a kid for sure. It was by far my favorite attraction - which was really saying something because I loved Disney World and was already in love with Rollercoasters and adventurous rides. That it could beat out the likes of Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad, Country Bear Jamboree, Tiki Room, and Etc. Let's you know a little bit about how good the ride was. As good as this video is it can't quite encapsulate the magic of that ride. It is reminiscent of it for sure, and I am so glad you uploaded this, but I really do miss the magic of the ride...
they really need to bring this ride back or come up with a different imagination storyline but they do need to bring back the dream finder!!!

This version of the ride just really makes me tear up. Not only is this version absolutely outstanding, it is also just straight up wholesome. Thus, it is completely idiotic for the park to get rid of this version of the ride. One of the biggest ride downgrades ever. Justice needs to be served for both the dreamfinder and figment.
I'm so excited that at D23 they announced they are bringing back the Figment meet and greet in 2023

Wow, that was great! Took me back! I loved Figment. ❤️. It was pretty long though and I’m sure the younger generation might not be as excited or it hold their attention like when we were younger. It also had scary parts for younger kids. But it’s sad that they changed the ride to something much more vanilla and boring today. I love old time Disney animatronics and their magic.

I rode this once in 1983, it’s fun to watch it now and some parts come back to me. I watched a ride through of the new version too and agree with many here that the old one was better.

Thanks Dave! I hate the original animatronics are gone. I definitely miss the Dreamfinder and OG Figment. I think Figment, sadly, is being fazed out. It hurts my heart.

I went there twice in the early '90s; never since. Only things I clearly remember are this ride, the Mexico ride, and Small World.
This was wonderful. Going on this ride is one of the few fond memories I have of Disney. Thank you.
BRING BACK DREAM FINDER, keep the adorable big finale of the current version (if you don't love it I don't trust you), and change everything else in between. This ride was so visually stunning, especially for it's time. WHY would they remove the set design, bring that back! 🥺

I never got to go on this ride or even the 1999 version, because I was only born in 2002. However, I do remember the old SpaceShip Earth and riding it back when I was about five years old

Disney relies to heavily on screen projections and tvs these days (and roller coasters). Back then it was amazing set pieces, stories, and imagination. It’s going to be outdated in less than 10 years.

0:36 Something I've noticed about videos of this ride: completely empty queues. Like many masterpieces, it was unappreciated in its day.
There’s also the theory that Disney intentionally made the line for the ride hard to find that way then they could say to Kodak nobody’s riding it we need a remodel

I'm getting a book that collects all 5 issues of the first comic series for Christmas from my older sister. I also want to get myself a plush Figment.
My kids are terrified of the current ride. Why did they change it? The old version is so much better.
Amanda, it's crazy to think that the current version has become the longest-running version of all 3 attractions, even outliving the original attraction :-( we can only hope and pray that the original version will return one day

The audio isn’t the greatest unfortunately. I’m just grateful footage still exists of this.
I’m not joking figment actually inspired me to become an artists because of this ride but sadly I’ve only been to the 3.0 ride (NO DREAM FINDER 😕) but figment will always be my favorite yellow eye’s, alligator snout, orange wings, purple dragon :)

This was my favorite ride at Epcot and when it was re done i didn't like it so now my favorite ride at Epcot is the Garden Grill in the Land Pavilion because it's not only a ride it's a restaurant as well and my nickname is Disney Dave because I used to work at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida and I have always kept it

The technology for the dream finder scene is similar to Harry Potter forbidden journey.
I feel really stupid for watching Charlie Callahan (Theme Snark) for years and not knowing his intro was the song from this ride.
