I am Yankees fan but Fred Lynn is one of my all time favorite players. He could do it all, hit, hit for power and avg, run, and was a great center fielder. I thought he was definitely going to be a HOF

I was so privileged to see Fred multiple times at Fenway when I was a kid in the late 70s. One of my favorite memories was seeing him hit a game winning three run home run. He was my favorite player on my favorite outfield.

What an awesome documentary! As a New England kid growing up in the 70s, Fred Lynn became my favorite player, and he still is my favorite all time Sox player. I was really sad when he was traded. I had no idea he was a multi sports star when he was younger, nor did I know he originally went to USC on a football scholarship! Fred was, and still is, a class act. I'm glad he is active on social media, and it's nice to see him still out there enjoying the occasional game. I would love to meet him some day. Thanks for all the great childhood baseball memories Fred!!

Fred Lynn was my childhood hero. All I wanted to do was play ball like him.

I was in fifth grade in 1975 and that is when I first became a Sox fan. Fred Lynn was my favorite player also.

Freddie was my fav player when I got into baseball as a kid back in '78. Still is my all time FAV. To me, Freddie could do no wrong. If he had stayed with the Red Sox and played most of his games in Fenway, he'd be in the hall today.

Fred Lynn was a terrific ballplayer, I saw him play in SD in 1990 with the Padres and saw him homer and that was super cool. He was my favorite Red Sock with Ted Williams and Yaz.

Fred Lynn also won ALCS mvp in 1982 with the Angels. The only person ever to be named ALCS mvp from the losing team

great days in Fenway, before it became corrupted by money; Fred was the best Sox center fielder since the legendary Tris Speaker - and still the best since

Fred Lynn was better than about 40% of the players that are already in the Baseball Hall-of-Fame .. trade or no trade...Fenway Park or no Fenway Park. Gold Gloves, Batting Title, MVP, All-Star Records, World Series, and ALCS highlights (and MVP). Fred Lynn excelled at everything.

That he didn't win the MVP award in 1979 is a travesty. Led the league in with 8.9 WAR, OPS, OPS+, batting average; 2nd in homeruns, 4th in RBIs, top 5 in assists and double plays as a centerfielder. Lost to DH Don Baylor and his 3.7 WAR. With 2 MVP awards, he might be in the Hall.

While you make a great case for Freddie in 1979, most of those stats you brought up were not calculated in ‘79. WAR didn’t become an official stat until 2009. Back then, the vital stats were HR, RBI, BA & Runs scored.
In addition, a lot more emphasis was put on the success of your team. Both Baylor (Angels) and Kenny Singleton (Orioles) were on division winners, which is a huge reason why they placed 1st and 2nd.
Lastly, I feel votes were split between Lynn and Jim Rice, who had another great year. This probably allowed George Brett to finish 3rd in the voting.

Fred Lynn is my all-time favorite Red Sox player. I remember a freak catch he made in Minnesota where he jumped and robbed the batter of a homer.

Freddy about anything (hitting his first major league HR, being on the All-Star team with Henry Aaron, etc.): "That was pretty cool!" Ever the mellow Californian. Made my young adult years in Boston that much better.

Great through his whole career even after he left Boston seven 20 + home run seasons after he left the red Sox so still productive when he left Boston he should have stayed in Boston with Jim Rice and Dwight Evans best outfield ever allso a great outfielder maybe 5 gold gloves to his credit definitely would have hit 400 home runs and about 1500 rbis if he would have. Stayed healtthy my top three red Sox of all time
    1 Jim Rice
    2 Dwight Evans
    3 Fred Lynn

I feel so bad when I hear these stories like "if he had only taken 6 steps to the right instead of 8," or whatever, they would have won the world series.

Rick Miller was granted free agency in 1977 and signed as a free agent by the Angels. Rick Miller may have been an MVP of something, but I wasn't of the AL or NL.

@@markhousman8447 and if that was not enough of the Rick Miller Experience, when Lynn left the Sox took him back from the Angels. Sox use to be able to tear a team right down to the ground like no one else. Seems like were right back in the middle of that right now........

With a majority of this baseball season probably gone the Sox got high end prospects for pretty much nothing. Mookie will play half a season and most likely sign elsewhere.
