I lived in Ontario (Canada) for several years. There are a lot of Amish people around in these small villages and towns. Just like in this movie you can still see these carriages pulled by horses. I read several books about their lives. The shunning is still practiced against those who do not submit to the council of elders. But other religious groups, such as Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and Mennonites, have similar practices. This also happens in some Protestant churches. I have experienced similar “rejection” ( by the Protestant group) because I had a different opinion. So I understands perfectly what happened in this movie. The end of this movie showed beautifully how love prevails. Both parents finally had a strength and broke what was rooted in them... they understood their daughter and realized that the world they live in can be very cruel. This young girl decided to leave the group, I think for two reasons. She wanted to find contact with her biological mother and did not want her parents who raised her to be shunned by this group like she was. I am sure they found a way to stay in contact …,
Yes in the series that this book is based on she does eventually stay in contact and has a reoccurring mention/ roles in the books that follow. Beverly Lewis is a wonderful author in this genre. I recommend her books and this is one of my favorite series of hers. There's 2 more books after the shunning that follow Katie's story. And I totally agree with your comment about the type of isolation placed on people within "religious" groups and it's sad. If we use the Bible as God's authority and not man's conviction we should never have that problem but...we're fallible and sinful and prideful so we do.. and instead of just agreeing to disagree on the different conclusions we come to concerning scripture we become offended and react incorrectly. Thank God for Jesus and grace because we definitely need both.
The “Mormons”, or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, of which I am, do not shun those who no longer believe, and it certainly is not a formal practice. Rather, we are told to keep loving them, and love them back into the fold. You really should take the time and effort to research before you end up writing falsehoods about certain religions when you name them.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE - FEEL THE ENDING IS INCOMEPLETE. You could have at least showed some interactions between Katie and her biological mother.
In the book, her shunning is much harsher. She endures it for much longer. She ends up going to live with her mom's cousin who is Mennonite. It is from there that she leaves from New York. In the book, while her parents certainly love her, they follow the old Amish dictates to the letter of the law regarding her shunning. I like the ending to the movie much more than the book. The 2nd and 3rd books are also amazing, although the first movie portrayed her birth mother, Laura's, story, much differently in the books.
@@sandtx4913 They read the same one. These are rules made up by the Amish church, has nothing to do with the bible only a desparate attempt in keeping their people among them hidden under the veil of faith.

@@osamedennadi6309 We are going to admire the Amish very soon, and how they have been able to live without modern amenities. We Americans are shortly going to wish we had those skills. Unless of course, you are living amongst the elite, which most of us are not.
This is about the reality of adoption world wide, the consequences of what happened when children weren't told of their beginnings. People shouldn't judge the Amish people and their beliefs. No one religion is perfect but they are wrong to treat her like that - the parents & the community should have been given advice too. The parents & community can't change how she feels inside. Both mums made huge sacrifices.
😂and in the end, I praise God for miracles!!!! I do wish my own father had been so loving in his good-bye. But after 15 years, I'm grateful that distance made us closer.
I know it is their religion but they did the wrong thing by not telling her. Shunning is terrible. Smashing the guitar was so unchristian, The adopted parents truly loved her as their daughter. Thank you. A very beautiful movie
Smh, if anybody should be shunned is the adoptive parents for keeping the secret about their adopted daughter. And they suppose to set an example? Smh,🥴
The development of this severity in the Amish faith did NOT come from the spiritual roots but developed under the hatred, imprisonment, and murder that reigned down on Amish and fellow baptism-in-adulthood faiths. The idea that only an adult could make a conscious decision for baptism flew in the face of other Christian faiths which did infant baptism - both positions strongly believed by their respective faith believers and practitioners. I am NOT denying that it is a problem, particularly shunning - but understanding how dangerous it was to be Amish/Anabaptist early on in the history of these faiths, and how keenly they strived for isolation only because they were safer that way, may help us understand and feel compassion for this horrific historical experience, and understand how the isolationist features have become strongly held practice. It is my understanding that the degree to which, and details of the stricter restrictions, are held in various communities varies widely, due to independent softenings of this strategy.
More like religious abuse , which all religions do.. guaranteed. The Amish also enjoy sexual abuse- by the father and brother/siblings of the girls and young women.
they listen to hymns which is very much music, just spiritual music.. a lot of the music we listen to today is evil!! And furthermore, if we were to live by the Bible completely… a lot of people would be shunned in today’s time, the Bible does speak of separating ourselves from unbelievers… and we are supposed to separate ourselves from unbelievers and not allow their sin in our homes or lives!! But today people want to change the Bible to their own beliefs… it doesn’t matter how much you try to change it or how much you don’t agree with it… we are in the last days and he is coming back very soon, day we will have no excuses!! g God is a good God and a faithful God BUT…. You have to live your life according to his laws, his commandments.!! God gave his own son to die for the sins of the world an ungrateful world.. who is always trying to change his word to fit thier desires… Shunning is mentioned in the Bible, not using the word shun, but it does tell us to separate ourselves from sinners and their sin!!
@@authorcole The Bible also tells us of helping sinners repent, and try and show them the way of God. So, how can you do that if you're not in contact, a minimum at least?
It's not about fear and change. It's about, you are supposed to be in the world but not OF IT. ROMANS 12:2. By bringing worldly things to their home she broke the rules. I do think that amish music rules are too harsh. If someone played an instrument perhaps they could king on key.
50 years ago, I was shunned by my best friend. It impacted my life so much. I'd always thought we'd be Grand ma's and enjoy our grand kids. I made lots of bad choices after that and am not married or have children.. Don't shun.
My so called best friend did the same to me after I got married and had a baby, it was heartbreaking. Then I began to look back on the 25 years we'd been friends, I began to realize that she really only wanted me around when she had the upperhand, she was married 20 years before me, we lived together during university from there we stayed friends and during the 20 years I was unmarried, no kids. I spent much of my vacations watching her children so she and her husband could go on vacations. she started a business right out of university and it did very well, she worked incredibly hard, no doubt about that. I on the other hand worked my way up the corporate ladder and it took me a very long time to dig myself out of a lot of debt. she always had more, she had the fancy cars, the big fancy house, pool etc. I lived in a one bedroom condo and drove a car that cost 1/4 of what hers cost. then I met someone and got married, had a baby. She changed, she no longer called me everyday, she was short with me all the time. After my son was born I became very sick, I was just hitting my stride in my career, finally making some decent money. I was able to buy a nice home and we put a pool in, I will never forget a call I had with her after we put the pool in and she asked me what it cost, I didn't think much of it and told her, she says " omg, if I had your money I would burn mine". WHAT?? this was the first very crack in what I would later come to realize was an incredibly toxic relationship from the begining. During our "friendship" I would often show up at her house to go shopping, or go here or there, if I had makeup on and did my hair she would make fun of me, every single time...I would laugh it off and say well ya, I have NOTHING else to do with my time, I dont have 3 kids, lol. When I traded up and got a new car, was so happy and proud of it...yet her husband still made fun of it, why? This was the entire relationship. So when the wheels really fell off was 2021, sept. I messaged her and told her a VERY close of mine ( she and I also lived together in University) I messaged her to tell her my friend had been killed in a hit and run accident, I was beside myself. She knew her of course, we had all lived together at one point breifly in our 20's.she did not even respond. She saw the message I saw that she opened the message. I gave her two days to respond, nothing. So I finally blocked her and we have not spoken since. Sometimes these people do us a favour by showing us who they really are. If your friend shunned you, they were never ever a friend. I hope you can look at the situation and know that YOU did nothing wrong. I hope you can move forward and come to truly know in your heart that this person was/is a very unkind person and you deserve so much better.
I'm American, not English, of French/Irish extraction. But yeah, as a disciple of Jesus Christ I've been shunned by 'the church'. 1 John: if you say you love God, but don't love your brother, you're a liar, 'and the truth is not in you.'
The only thing I don't like is she walked away from her horse. The Amish are very cruel to their horses and livestock. Good story but I am sad at the walk from her companion that got her around.
The Amish as I understand it don't treat animals as pets, just as something to perform work. We just rescued a Standardbred horse who has been with the Amish for around ten years, she was a in a kill pen, came here pretty shut down but little by little she's coming out of her shell. She definitely has never been treated as a pet, she doesn't even know what treats are at all.
I am sure there is second part don’t know the name. It has the same cast would watch it again. We can learn from it to be tender hearted to one another
Everyone shuns no matter the society religious or non-religious Families, friends, and workplaces, you name it religious and non-religious.. I think the Amish as a whole are good people.
I see the movie different then you see it. It moved me deeply, the story, ambient, landscape, non violence and sex scenes. (Except her father that adopted her, break the guitar).
I was shunned and I took it as a lovely discipline I was not a good association that's the truth and helped to me realized I wasn't good but I was able to speak to my immediate family, it worked for me, God Is Love!
I really liked it hope you are able to continue with this show it left me wanting to learn more about the brother who took the truck to help her out and hoping he don’t get in trouble for it for trying to help.
At 46:33 begins the drama. At 51:25, it’s absolutely dehumanizing and hypocritical that the father seeks counsel from the elders, as they quote the lost sheep but order discipline by shunning. The shunning, starting at 53:49, is just sickening. And at 1:02:26, destroying her guitar makes my blood boil. I really hate the shunning, because that’s not how the body of Christ works.
I want the rest of the story. What happened to her friend that disappeared? I was hoping to see her meet her bio mom and maybe find her friend or learn what happened to him then return home to start her amish life with her parents who loved her so much.
I am stunned with this beautiful movie 🍿🎥 I love the plot..it's very exciting..( wonderful 💯 video thanks!) love is a beautiful gift from Heaven... Amen 🕊️❤️💐

It has a sequel.
I read the series but don't know the name of the others and when she meets the boy again.
@@SMD2308oh name of it pls?

In the book, her shunning is much harsher. She endures it for much longer. She ends up going to live with her mom's cousin who is Mennonite. It is from there that she leaves from New York.
In the book, while her parents certainly love her, they follow the old Amish dictates to the letter of the law regarding her shunning.
I like the ending to the movie much more than the book.
The 2nd and 3rd books are also amazing, although the first movie portrayed her birth mother, Laura's, story, much differently in the books.
Shunning is evil, nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say we have to shun each other. The poor girl.
Yes shunning is totally against God's teachings
I think they have their own version of the bible.
Totally agree
But that was the mildest shunning in the history of shunnings.
@@sandtx4913 They read the same one. These are rules made up by the Amish church, has nothing to do with the bible only a desparate attempt in keeping their people among them hidden under the veil of faith.
I read the books years ago. So pleased to find the movie of it! Thanks.

Extraordinaire actress Danielle Panabaker, very pretty and good singer❤ I loved the precious landscapes and indoors scenes, the script very well elaborated indeed, thanxs from México 😅😂
Such a beautiful story and yes, I am crying. We need more of these stories in our world. 😢😢😢❤️❤️❤️❤️🌻🌻🌻
Thank God! Old ladies in every culture, and most 'religions' are willing to SHUN the rules & support LOVE! ❤❤❤❤
@drleesadr do you speak from experience ?
@l.d.d.2062 I was never Amish,.but was raised in a fundamentalist Christian church. So from that experience, Yes, I speak.

Great movie! Very touching! I love these communities were respect, love, and discipline rule. I was hoping to see her meeting her biological mother and the decision she would make afterwards.
Its in Part 2 and 3
Thanks for the movie but at least we would see the poor girl meeting her mum
Oh God very heart touching scen when father hugs her daughter 😢
The ending was so emotional. Good watch.
Good story. With so much evil in the world and getting worse, don’t blame them for trying so hard to keep it out. If only the rest of the world was smart enough to reject evil.
True but cutting yourself off from the world is a kind of weakness. We should be strong enough to resist evil. It strengthens and matures the spirit.

@@osamedennadi6309 We are going to admire the Amish very soon, and how they have been able to live without modern amenities. We Americans are shortly going to wish we had those skills. Unless of course, you are living amongst the elite, which most of us are not.
You make me cry ..this love story of this family ......God bless🙏❤️
This is about the reality of adoption world wide, the consequences of what happened when children weren't told of their beginnings. People shouldn't judge the Amish people and their beliefs. No one religion is perfect but they are wrong to treat her like that - the parents & the community should have been given advice too. The parents & community can't change how she feels inside. Both mums made huge sacrifices.
Does the Amish Bible say lying is a sin? The parents lied (at least by omission) that girls whole life!

What a beautiful movie. I didn't want it to end.
I know it is their religion but they did the wrong thing by not telling her. Shunning is terrible. Smashing the guitar was so unchristian, The adopted parents truly loved her as their daughter. Thank you. A very beautiful movie
But,,,, they Ain't Christian!!!!
Smh, if anybody should be shunned is the adoptive parents for keeping the secret about their adopted daughter. And they suppose to set an example? Smh,🥴
Fantastic movie shame we didnt see her meet her mum thanks for showing this movie really good.
I could not imagine a life without music.. These people are completely controlling! Its called spiritual abuse..
Wrong Taylor Swift lost by music and the new generation with social media and woke upbringing
But today people want to change the Bible to their own beliefs… it doesn’t matter how much you try to change it or how much you don’t agree with it… we are in the last days and he is coming back very soon, day we will have no excuses!! g
God is a good God and a faithful God BUT….
@@authorcole
The Bible also tells us of helping sinners repent, and try and show them the way of God. So, how can you do that if you're not in contact, a minimum at least?
Beautiful movie. Thank you for sharing ❤️
The amish parents sinned by not telling their friends and family that their daughter was adopted.
Right. Omission. Where's their full transparency? I don't know if adoption if accepted though.
What a great movie. You know it’s good when you cry good tears
Follow your heart. To the parents that adopted her out of love..God will always bless you.
What A crazy mentality from her adopted father. He is close-minded like the rest of them. Poor Kate
God is Love. 'Religion ' can & often is not about love. That is tragic😢
If you hang around a evil crowd you have to shun❤ and their isn't nothing wrong with her lovely singing it comes from the heart ❤
Shunning is disgusting and away of control . All about Religion and bible study, where does it say to be so unforgiving afraid of change.
It's not about fear and change.
It's about, you are supposed to be in the world but not OF IT. ROMANS 12:2. By bringing worldly things to their home she broke the rules. I do think that amish music rules are too harsh. If someone played an instrument perhaps they could king on key.
Ty , what a wonderful movie!! Hope, love + forgiveness is all we need in this world.🙏💞
50 years ago, I was shunned by my best friend.
She looks like a cross between Winona Rider, Anne Hathaway, and Julia Roberts.

I'm American, not English, of French/Irish extraction. But yeah, as a disciple of Jesus Christ I've been shunned by 'the church'. 1 John: if you say you love God, but don't love your brother, you're a liar, 'and the truth is not in you.'
I KNOW this is just a movie. VIR: The Amish man would NEVER kiss his fiancé before the wedding!!!

I’ve saw this before it’s so well worth watching. Thank you so much for posting the ending was the best.
Great story with emotions and we can't never juge the differente believe. Thank you.
Made me cry..Great movie great actors
The only thing I don't like is she walked away from her horse. The Amish are very cruel to their horses and livestock. Good story but I am sad at the walk from her companion that got her around.
Dogs too!!! UNGODLY RELIGION THAT IS NOT BIBLICAL! It is more of a culture.
Excellent cast, thoughtful script . Heartwarming movie!
All children deserve to know if they were adopted.
I don't think so because how to explain that the mother didn't want her. It hurts. There's no point to tell about the adoption and hurt the child
Thank you for the upload. We'll appreciate The Confession and The Reckon also. Thank you in advance
A religion and way of life that could be so cruel… 😢is that what faith could be about? 😭😭No please
I get emotional, this movie is nice and sweet
I am sure there is second part don’t know the name. It has the same cast would watch it again. We can learn from it to be tender hearted to one another
It's called "The Confession" and came out in 2013.
Thank you for your answer I will have a hunt for it.
It’s amazing the different responses to the same film.

That was a genuinely beautiful movie!
Shunning is all about keeping them in in control.
Thanks for this amazing movie❤❤❤❤

My wife and I LOVED this movie. We're obviously not Amish but in many ways, we identified with the parents.
Did you watch the other 2 parts?
I loved the book, I hope they finish the story, it really is a beautiful story.
It’s a movie…not a documentary…
Awesome movie, unexpectedly, a lesson of what true love is
At 46:33 begins the drama.
BEAUTIFUL MOVIE !!!!
