I've been saying it for years, too. But Clippers bloggers (many of them) attacked me for it. Their loyalty to Rivers was just irrational in my view. I was off Rivers' bandwagon early on. It's very strange how sports fans and management alike cannot think about coaches rationally.
5 years later, this still holds true. In fact...based on the last 5 years (2017-2022) alone no other coaches BESIDES the first 15 years that Doc Rivers has coached has any other coach blown more 3-1 leads and series leads than him! This includes blowing 19 point leads and losing both games in the same series, no other coach has done this. The last 5 years he gets to play with Joel Embiid, James Harden, Ben Simmons, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and to a lesser extent Tobias Harris on top of the other 7 HOF players he coached.
Ive always thought Rivers was overrated. He lucked up and had three very professional stars and won championship. Three years ago Clippers were on par with Golden State. Now Golden State is light years, ahead.
Alex Pena Brad Steven's walked into the best scenario a young team with a million draft picks he's n9t bad but he hasn't done anything to say he's better
Theopolis Turtles I don't believe that we can keep calling coaches good because they have a super team or a really really good roster, I'm not sure how they would do if they coaches a mediocre team. You know which coach I say is a really good coach Popovich.... the jury is still out on these other coaches including Phil Jackson
jj gg Good rotations. Good plays. He gets the best out of his guys, reinforces the culture. Always looking do improve his game. I think he is a good coach. Not saying he's the best.

***** Not even close. Deandre wasn't rven close to All Star level when Doc got there and Austin Rivers is definitely playing better thsn he was with the Pelicans
People give coaches too much credit. The coaches with the best players win. It is as simple as that. Tyronne Lue and Steve Kerr are winning because they have the best group of players.
Timothy Oliver Coaching is actually underrated. Yeah of course talent wins, but the better team wins and that's because of a great coach. Look at Pop, he doesn't have the best players, but they are always competitive.
See this is why u can't help everybody. Who was Glen coach in Boston, Doc. Who when no other team wanted Glen, who took him with him to the clippers, Doc. So Doc was a good coach when you had a job, but NOW all of a sudden, you think is overrated?? He wasn't overrated when he was the only coach that wanted you. And lets not act like Glen took his career seriously.
The only reason the Warriors lost that series vs the Clippers was because they didn't had a center. Both Bogut and Ezeli where out with injuries and they had to play with D-Lee at center and an aging Jermaine Oneal backing him up. Also the only difference was not only a new coach. That summer they got Livingston and Barbosa to replace Steve Blake and Jordan Crawford so the bench got a lot more deeper.
Doc is not overrated, he's rated properly. I've never heard anyone call him the best or even one of the best coaches of all time. People usually refer to him as one of the best in today's game. I would concur, he's arguably better than any coach excluding Popovich. To bring up the year which preceded the Big 3 without adding context is lazy. Paul Pierce was injured most of the season and Tony Allen was possibly their best player out there on most nights, yes Tony Allen...... All coaches need talent to win, Greg Popovich teams weren't winning championships before Tim Duncan, in fact the only reason Tim was drafted by them is because Popovich team had a similar season to Doc's Celtics team. Belichick was not looked at as a great coach before Tom Brady; Phil Jackson Kobe led teams couldn't make it out of the first round before they got the talent required to succeed. A coach is only as good as the players he has, unless that coach actually has talent but never wins, which isnt the case for Doc.
Tyree Antoin as far as i remember al jefferson was the best player after pierce. and dont you even dare puttin poppovich and rivers in the same sentence.
Yeah, you're right, I forgot about him but tony allen did average the most he ever has in career that year because he had to. I'm not comparing them, I'm just pointing out the fact that no "great" coach is great without the talent.
Finally someone is saying the truth lol. I like Doc but the Big 3 *(KG, Pierce, & Jesus Shuttlesworth)* made him into a star head coach. He's no Gregg Popovich who actually COACHES his team rather than rely solely on stars. *Watch our videos and Subscribe to our channel...thanks!*
If Celts had a btr coach they would've won a 2nd ring. Phil Jackson outcoached him the 2nd time around. Doc burnt out his starters in game 7. Doc was a likeable guy though, very charismatic & professional.
Doc is well liked and that has made his life easy. He's had the best talent in the west, next to GS, for the past 5 years and he hasn't accomplished anything.
Broussard says Doc is considered a top 3-5 coach. By who? Saying Doc Rivers is an elite coach is like saying Thibs is an elite coach. Rick Carlisle and Pops are the 2 best coaches in the NBA. Steve Kerr is on his way to greatness. I know Golden State is extremely talented but its impossible to deny the improvements made from M. Jacksons team in just one off-season. Doc and Thibs are not in the top 10.
FOH talking about Kerr. Come back with Brad Stevens gets out of the east and Lue should be an assistant. Look at the job Doc Rivers has done with the talent in LA this year. Steve Kerr and Carlisle wouldn't have won 30 games.
keybladechosn1 Doc has won playoff games, however his success only came when he had 3 hall of fame players. Marvin Lewis made his name off of Ray Lewis.
But he still one. Lewis hasn't one a single playoff game. That's ridiculous. Doc Rivers is overrated but he's managed to at least win playoff games. Give the man credit for that.
Yes. I could coach that Celtics team to a championship. He had 3 amazing players, also role players like Tony Allen. Big Baby, Eddie House, Rondo. Is he horrid? No. But hr is in the middle to me. Popovich and Carlisle are the best. Steve Kerr isn't great. But the players are.
Glen "Big Baby" Davis is one of my favorite from 2008 Celtics squad. But c'mon with this harsh talk, Big Baby. This guy said he wished he took his carer more serious then throws rocks at Doc Rivers. GTFOH
Samurai Jack lol, smh it was like saying that the golden state lost this year w/o green, bogut etc. 08 celtics is clearly the better team w/ or w/o bynum
Samurai Jack that is not true, what about the Lakers, they won 2010 cuz Perkins got injured and missed game 7. Also, Celtics would have won the NBA Championship in 2009 if KG did not get injured and missed the entire playoffs.
Doc made Rondo, Perk, Tom Thibodeau all successful even though they are not. He brought culture to the team and won a title with only two all stars joining that were at end of their careers. If it wasn't for injuries and bad luck he should have at least 3 rings!
most overrated coach in the history of the league. don't even deny it. he's good, but he's nowhere near a top coach in the league now, let alone all time.
Seems to me like Doc is the ultimate players coach who allows his star players to run the team. In Boston it worked because you had strong personalities with heart that guys wanted to follow. I don't think the stars playing for the clippers have the same demeanor.
Also the biggest problem with the Clippers is the mindset that they have a top 3 PG, a top 5 PF, and a top 3 Center would automatically translate to success. At the end of the day, if you don't have a true system, an identity, a direction, you're not going nowhere. Their top three players doesn't seem to enhance each other skills and make each other better. Just because they are all top 5 in their position, doesn't mean they will be successful. The Clippers problem is their top 2/3 players are way too flawed. They don't have players who create mismatches. They don't have versatility at all. Their entire team is one dimensional. They have one sharp shooter and the rest are just streaky volume shooters. They don't have a legit scorer. And they play too much one on one and relies too much on CP3 to create something
I'll give Big Baby this, his point keeps looking more and more legit every season since Doc went to LA simply because of the lack of growth and success the team has had since his first season there. I just want people to know this about the Celtics before their Big 3 was assembled, the record the year before that happened was 24-58 and it skyrocketed to 66-16 the very next season. I don't care who you think Doc is, no coach makes that much of a difference in one season especially since it was the season that Ray Allen & Kevin Garnett joined the Celtics that offseason.
Yes, doc is one of those good coaches that will have your team winning and getting into the playoffs, if not winning a couple rounds consistently, but he does get outcoached when he gets deep in the playoffs. He needed a super team to win the championship.
Only one person made good sense out of this. Pop haven't coached players with their own identity. Not saying that T-Mac was at his best when he got to SS but you could see that he was sidelined by Pop because of his personality. Doc has had to coach less talent than a lot of the winning coaches. Besides Chris, JJ and Crawford who are the scorers that he has. Just get Blake to settle for midrange jumpers and he is done. As much as Phill helped MJ it is safe to say that the made each other. No matter how great a coach is not having the pieces to execute your plan will not bring you wins. Doc has to deal with major injuries every year, I think the people that can give you a good assessment of Doc are players like Paul, Kg and Ray. Just think about this, one of the differences between Kobe and Lebron is that Lebrons team mates embrace what ever role that had to play where is with Kobe there was always a few team mates who showed resistance. As for GW, Mark Jackson built a foundation that Kerr built on. The team never had a superstar personality until they started to get real good and all the players have accepted their roles on the team, even Draymond
people don't remember all the great after timeout plays they ran throughout his Boston years, granted the veterans knew how to run it... but the plays he called was amazing to me at times and how they pulled it off so frequently
Yes, the Boston Celtics of 2008 were an elite defensive squad, I would give that credit tom thibidou. In every year he's been in Los Angeles he has never been to the conference finals even.
Which is my big problem with his statement. If Pierce, Allen or Garnett said he was overrated (which they would never) that would carry weight. It's meaningless from the guy who half assed his entire career.
I agree completely! Doc inherited the first super team where the stars were still top players (unlike the rockets back with Barkley/pippen) clippers have gotten progressively worse the time he's been there even with CP3, griffin, Crawford, Jordan, reddick
Phily was beaten by Atlanta in seven games. Atlanta Carl! Rivers has the most seventh home game losses in playoff history. How many more antirecords he must set, before teams owners will understand, that he is a dullard.
I'm not disagreeing with What Glenn said but didn't Doc get him a spot on the Clippers while being out of shape? I don't think I would say that about somebody who looked out for me, but then again I'm not big baby.
He was right
Ohh he was sooo right

Fred S that's not the only thing that makes a good coach
that's true~ I think he's too old school, no wonder the legends worked well with him, but the young guys could never get along with him...
Typical media always trying to discredit anything anyone done . I guess every coach has a ring
Had to spin the block after Doc just blew 26 and 18 point leads and lost in the second round to the Hawks
lol swear bro with glasses sounds exactly like Cris Carter voice wise and looks like DL Hughley.
I always said that too doc got to Boston won a ring and everybody just said he was the greatest coach but when he was in Orlando nobody said that
Yes, the Boston Celtics of 2008 were an elite defensive squad, I would give that credit tom thibidou. In every year he's been in Los Angeles he has never been to the conference finals even.
Still holds up today
Broussard, Whitlock, and Jackson. Who is the fourth person?
Then Davis comes back on the show and says he should of took basketball more seriously. This guy is a joke.
Pretty confident the big 3 didn't need a coach. The Truth & The Big Ticket run that team.
yes he is overrated!!
FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS Austin SHOULD NOT BE ON THE TEAM
Phily was beaten by Atlanta in seven games. Atlanta Carl! Rivers has the most seventh home game losses in playoff history. How many more antirecords he must set, before teams owners will understand, that he is a dullard.
I know this doesn't help the Clippers' or Doc's argument but Blake is a top 2 pf.
what does technical fouls has to do with how good a coach is?
Steve Kerr inherited the warriors doc put in blood sweat and tears his years in Boston
thts not docs real hair is it? it keeps reflecting the lights in the stadiums lol
I'm not disagreeing with What Glenn said but didn't Doc get him a spot on the Clippers while being out of shape? I don't think I would say that about somebody who looked out for me, but then again I'm not big baby.
Conveying a plan through your key players is what good coaches do. Players often make coaches look good, ie Phil Jackson.
Compared to the complexity/ intricacies of football coaching... all NBA coaching is overrated
