      I've been saying it for years, too. But Clippers bloggers (many of them) attacked me for it. Their loyalty to Rivers was just irrational in my view. I was off Rivers' bandwagon early on. It's very strange how sports fans and management alike cannot think about coaches rationally.

    5 years later, this still holds true. In fact...based on the last 5 years (2017-2022) alone no other coaches BESIDES the first 15 years that Doc Rivers has coached has any other coach blown more 3-1 leads and series leads than him! This includes blowing 19 point leads and losing both games in the same series, no other coach has done this. The last 5 years he gets to play with Joel Embiid, James Harden, Ben Simmons, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and to a lesser extent Tobias Harris on top of the other 7 HOF players he coached.

      I have seen one of the greatest in pat riley win 15 games and go 15-67 20-62 and 18-64 in Miami.....the best lose too but not popovich...Pop wins no matter what..he rests guys and yet wins...he uses his bench way more than most yet wins..guys like david robinson Duncan leave he adjusts and still wins 50+ games..I think spolestra in Miami because of his 5 seasons without LeBron has a pretty good track record too not having bosh their max paid player much in the last 3 years and grooming waiters and whiteside 2 project journeymen players when you combine it with the 4 finals trips with LeBron and winning at least 38 games no matter the injuries or talent he has in 9 seasons as a coach and making the playoffs 4 out of 5 times wining over 45 games and wining a game come playoff time every season especially this season taking a 11-30 team to now 34 and 34 in the 7th seed in the east after they were 14th and over 10 games back of the 8th seed just 2 months ago is amazing.....coach of the year...Popovich and spo adjust too their talent.thats what makes them the 2 best coaches..by far...year in they compete...it would have been easy for Miami to go into the toilet without any of their big 3 especially starting 11-30 and losing due to injury for the rest of the season both their starting sf and pf in top 10 draft pick winslow and mcroberts ...no one would blame the team to tank for a top 5 pick.....mimai has been 23 and 4 since then lol ....that's called great coaching..winning 13 straight is impossible for a team that was 11-30 but Miami did it somehow beating the warriors with kd and the rockets and cavs twice.......with d league journeymen 10 day contract type youn players rookies and bums who make less than 2 million a year and never played in the nba before contriving most of their bench and team..they have 6 legit nba players honestly and only 1 guy who can score 20...they are the definition of good coaching that puts them in position to compete every night by adjusting even if they lose..

    The only reason the Warriors lost that series vs the Clippers was because they didn't had a center. Both Bogut and Ezeli where out with injuries and they had to play with D-Lee at center and an aging Jermaine Oneal backing him up. Also the only difference was not only a new coach. That summer they got Livingston and Barbosa to replace Steve Blake and Jordan Crawford so the bench got a lot more deeper.

  • @tyreeantoin4969
    @tyreeantoin4969 7 лет назад +100

    Doc is not overrated, he's rated properly. I've never heard anyone call him the best or even one of the best coaches of all time. People usually refer to him as one of the best in today's game. I would concur, he's arguably better than any coach excluding Popovich. To bring up the year which preceded the Big 3 without adding context is lazy. Paul Pierce was injured most of the season and Tony Allen was possibly their best player out there on most nights, yes Tony Allen...... All coaches need talent to win, Greg Popovich teams weren't winning championships before Tim Duncan, in fact the only reason Tim was drafted by them is because Popovich team had a similar season to Doc's Celtics team. Belichick was not looked at as a great coach before Tom Brady; Phil Jackson Kobe led teams couldn't make it out of the first round before they got the talent required to succeed. A coach is only as good as the players he has, unless that coach actually has talent but never wins, which isnt the case for Doc.

    Broussard says Doc is considered a top 3-5 coach. By who? Saying Doc Rivers is an elite coach is like saying Thibs is an elite coach. Rick Carlisle and Pops are the 2 best coaches in the NBA. Steve Kerr is on his way to greatness. I know Golden State is extremely talented but its impossible to deny the improvements made from M. Jacksons team in just one off-season. Doc and Thibs are not in the top 10.

      Samurai Jack that is not true, what about the Lakers, they won 2010 cuz Perkins got injured and missed game 7. Also, Celtics would have won the NBA Championship in 2009 if KG did not get injured and missed the entire playoffs.

      Only reason the Lakers won the following match up is because Kendrick Perkins got hurt.

    Doc made Rondo, Perk, Tom Thibodeau all successful even though they are not. He brought culture to the team and won a title with only two all stars joining that were at end of their careers. If it wasn't for injuries and bad luck he should have at least 3 rings!

    Seems to me like Doc is the ultimate players coach who allows his star players to run the team. In Boston it worked because you had strong personalities with heart that guys wanted to follow. I don't think the stars playing for the clippers have the same demeanor.

    Also the biggest problem with the Clippers is the mindset that they have a top 3 PG, a top 5 PF, and a top 3 Center would automatically translate to success. At the end of the day, if you don't have a true system, an identity, a direction, you're not going nowhere. Their top three players doesn't seem to enhance each other skills and make each other better. Just because they are all top 5 in their position, doesn't mean they will be successful.
    The Clippers problem is their top 2/3 players are way too flawed. They don't have players who create mismatches. They don't have versatility at all. Their entire team is one dimensional. They have one sharp shooter and the rest are just streaky volume shooters. They don't have a legit scorer. And they play too much one on one and relies too much on CP3 to create something

    I'll give Big Baby this, his point keeps looking more and more legit every season since Doc went to LA simply because of the lack of growth and success the team has had since his first season there. I just want people to know this about the Celtics before their Big 3 was assembled, the record the year before that happened was 24-58 and it skyrocketed to 66-16 the very next season. I don't care who you think Doc is, no coach makes that much of a difference in one season especially since it was the season that Ray Allen & Kevin Garnett joined the Celtics that offseason.

  • @Jikjuka

    Yes, doc is one of those good coaches that will have your team winning and getting into the playoffs, if not winning a couple rounds consistently, but he does get outcoached when he gets deep in the playoffs. He needed a super team to win the championship.

  • @L0ngstrip

    Only one person made good sense out of this. Pop haven't coached players with their own identity. Not saying that T-Mac was at his best when he got to SS but you could see that he was sidelined by Pop because of his personality. Doc has had to coach less talent than a lot of the winning coaches. Besides Chris, JJ and Crawford who are the scorers that he has. Just get Blake to settle for midrange jumpers and he is done. As much as Phill helped MJ it is safe to say that the made each other. No matter how great a coach is not having the pieces to execute your plan will not bring you wins. Doc has to deal with major injuries every year, I think the people that can give you a good assessment of Doc are players like Paul, Kg and Ray. Just think about this, one of the differences between Kobe and Lebron is that Lebrons team mates embrace what ever role that had to play where is with Kobe there was always a few team mates who showed resistance. As for GW, Mark Jackson built a foundation that Kerr built on. The team never had a superstar personality until they started to get real good and all the players have accepted their roles on the team, even Draymond
