In fact the Olympics flying the flag of Chinese Taipei is an even greater political message than sticking to the facts of calling Taiwan ... Taiwan.
      It is not in any way related to flying a "Free Palestine" flag - that is sending a political message and specifically calls for action.

      @@emstink Taiwan is not an independent country as per the international consensus. It's officially called the Republic of China (ROC), and the name "Chinese Taipei" was adopted as a compromise to allow ROC to compete independently while not acknowledging it as a sovereign, independent state. Calling the participating team Taiwan or ROC implies it's a sovereign independent state, which it officially is not.

      It's funny that this is a big thing but no one bats an eye when america takes over other countries land in many areas and even forces other people out of their homes so they can use the land in other areas.
      America and the CCP in many ways aren't so different.
      At least the CCP isn't forcing the people from Taiwan or Tibet out of their land. The CCP is just saying that the land belongs to China and still letting the people live there. If I had to choose, I think I would side with the CCP over america. I'd prefer to stay where I'm from and belong to a different country instead of being forced away from my land and keep my country name.

      You're correct, no politics should be involved, so the organizers removed the politically contested statement of Taiwan being an independent sovereign country.
      I fully suppport Taiwans rights to be an independent country, trust me, but the fact is that the vast majority of the world representatives do not recognize Taiwan as an independent country yet, so claiming Taiwan IS an independent country would be a political statement.
      This has nothing to do with the CCP pressuring anyone, but following the majority international consensus during the Olympics sports event, and keeping politics out of it.

      Honestly, if they had zero politics involved, Chinese Taipei probably wouldn't even be allowed to compete. Allowing them to compete is a political move against China, and it should be done.
      They get away with it by forcing Taiwan to use its official, internationally recognized title of Chinese Taipei. They ban provocative signs, but they still make it a point to bring them into the competition.

      Its origine comes basically from the wish to fight other nations and show you're the best without open war. It's not like a classic american sport évent that is suppose to be about entertainment (and still compétition of course).

      I would love to see Taiwan as a seperate sovereign state, but unfortunately it's not yet and less than 20 member states of the UN out of 200+ acknowledge them as a sovereign, independent state. So for now, the politically correct way to refer to them is the "Chinese Taipei" team. In online events and at home, I'll be calling them Taiwan, but if you're at an Olympic game, it's fully reasonable to be thrown out if you cheered for Taiwan or have signs saying Taiwan, because it would be seen as a political statement.

    The Taiwanese players won and after the medal ceremonies, players from both countries took group selfie photo together with smiles on their faces. Sport unites them, others should emulate their spirit !

    We Filipinos know TAIWAN is a country. We know that TAIWAN is not part of china. Our President even congratulated TAIWAN'S President after the election. 😊
