Hey there, just by the way. You can open - as many of you surely know - an Opinel with the "Coup de Savoyard" as the french say. Sometimes the wooden handle makes it difficult to open the blade (could be because the wood is wet). So, gently tap and the blade will come out a little (rotation lock in your hand, groove downwards). Should work with the "Explore" too - just use the lanyard hole instead. Oh, great knife this Explore - I use it sometimes as an alternative to my Victorinox Outrider. Take care, enjoy mother nature and stay healthy
The "lanyard hole" is the perfect pry tool. So many guys destroy their knives because they pry with the blade, I think that is what that piece of metal is good for. Nice knife. Nice review
I like the look of that blade. Looks like it's a good cutter. The lanyard looks atrocious but at least you can use it without it. The handle also looks nice and grippy.
Cleusueau! quick the French police whistle!!!! Nice knives and very reasonable in price. French vineyard workers use Opinels for grafting buds on vines. They start out in a size from about an inch long ( a novel toy that really cuts ) all the way up to about an eight inch blade.
Yes. I have the 6 through 12 of the regular Opinels. Below the 6 do not have the locking ring and are small so I never wanted one. Thanks for the info and watching.
that's a really good woods knife, even with all the gimmicks. Opinels were never designed for chopping. The removable gut hook for small game is a plus, as is the whistle. Leaving the gut hook in for larger game is pretty cool too. Ferro rod worked like a champ. Opinel is a world leader in budget (but terrific) knives, and considering the beefiness of this knife, I see a good future for it. Gonna get one as soon as I can. As long as you don't chop with it or expect to baton 12 inch logs, this knife is definitely EDC-able on the trail, if you have a saw. Cross-batonning should not be a problem. I like it, and I trust Opinel. :)
1:39 what do you mean it's clear that they're not the same size. The handle of the no. 12 explorer is the size of the regular no. 12. It's a foldable knife so the number has never been a reference to the blade size.
To me that's a hunting knife/survival knife. Whistle can be good for communication, if there are others in the woods hunting (like on a driven hunt). Or for driving game as a beater on a driven hunt. I think it closest competitor is the EKA Swingblade. Very clever design. Price point is a little bit high though.
Good points but it is kinda gimmicky still. A good backup knife in this case. I have an EKA Swingblade (and the Ganzo version) I do not really use it but as a backup at deer camp maybe. Thanks for watching and the comment.
I could use this with the rubber handle but no whistles and the rest. There is one place I go where you almost always get rained on and I'm not talking the nice vertical stuff but the horizontal stuff. You have to put Opinels in plastic to stop the soaking/swelling. A rubber handled one would be great but a big Opinel would be less handy as lightness and compactness are two big pluses.
I just wish Opinel would make a #8 Explorer without the stupid serrations like the current model. Rubber handled #8 and #9 would sell well imo. Maybe one day. Thanks
Not big on serrations either. Can't work out why if you've never used them in the outdoors ever why you would find them totally necessary in a survival situation???
As a curiosity/collection piece, it's ok...otherwise nothing beats Hultafors OK4 knife as a (very) lightweight bush/survival knife that's also cheap. You can pair with it with a SAK ranger (camping) and you have a substantial combo
Very interesting knife. Nice review! Can't help but wonder if that hook might also work as a striker for the ferro rod similar to the shango notch on some TOPS knives?
I tested it yesterday after finding this knife in my truck just because of this comment. It doesn't work, but a simple file will fix that. Thanks for watching and asking.
They are already on Amazon for like 18.00,I just looked on there to be sure. I'm getting one an one probably for my sister, she likes little gadgets like this
the handle is a departure from the classic opinel. But if priced right I would buy it for sure. Classical blade mechanism with a few bells n whistles. what's not to like.
open the blade by tapping the end of the knife on a hard surface. then the blade comes out just enough. I read somewhere thats the traditional method to open.
Nope Noah! This is a #12. The blade length isn't the determinant. The spigot and the two parts of the Viroblock are 12 which is why is SAYS 12 on it. Look at the Opinel #9 Oyster knife. it has a 5cm blade but the lock is #9 so it's a #9. The lanyard loop cannot be any smaller, the gut hook has to emerge from the other side and still allow the lanyard to pass through it. This is a superb tool and has become my routine bench knife. We can't carry a knife this big in UK.
Nice presentation 👍🏼 Like you already said this knife is not edc-able, but I think it's a good backup for the car or bag. What I would prefer for edc carry is the Opinel Outdoor with a blade without serrations. I'm just thinking if it would be possible to exchange the blade of the Outdoor to the "normal" No. 8 model?! I'm not a good diy-guy, so I'll never know if this works, except somebody will put a tutorial online 😁
Thank you. Good point with the No. 8 Outdoor, if only it didn't have those serrations, maybe that will be next from Opinel, if they are listening to customers that is. I've heard that same complaint from many others so who knows. Appreciate the comment.
I think the gut hook would work as intended. I like the functionality of this as a single unit. However, I have all of these except the gut hook, in other tools. In the wild, I wouldn't rely on this single tool as a survival device.
Thanks for the thorough review. I'd stick with the regular #8 outdoors knife for its size. This one really looks sturdy but still a bit big for a folder. It looks like a good chopper too. I couldn't watch you chopping a young tree though. Isn't it illegal?
I wish they would make the smaller outdoor knife without the serrated blade. That tree had been blown over in a storm blocking my path in camp and was getting cut up anyway, no harm done. Besides it's my own property so I can do what I want. Thanks for watching.
sameold77 thanks for the reply. I agree that it's a pity they serve #8 outdoors knife only with a serrated blade. It's still a useful knife though. I'm glad to learn that little tree was already gone. I couldn't watch the video on full sound and might have missed that part. Here, you can't cut down a live tree even if it is in your garden and the one planted is you. Funny, because you can pull them out and plant somewhere they'll die eventually.
I've heard of opinel knives but none like this one,I'll buy one for my ruck sack just to have as a backup knife an well extra Ferro rod an the whistle.
Cool knife. I think it will make a great camp knife to keep in the bag. I am not fond of using any folder as a chopper. I think the hook will probably shaping up well with a chainsaw file. Do you know what it will retail for here in the U.S. ? Thanks for sharing. Atb. Robert
I do not know the Retail price in the USA but I've heard it will be around $40 but don't hold me to that. It is definitely a 'keep in the bag' knife. I don't use folders as choppers at all, but I wanted to see if this knife could take it. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Why wait? Buy it from France now! It's 39 Euro plus shipping. The Dollar/Euro price is good right now. Look at www.Opinel,com/en [unless you read French] Follow the links to "Museum shop" and just buy it. We are not allowed to sell or buy this knife in UK. [but we can buy a 22cm carving knife for $5 in a supermarket - it's confusing] Opinel will charge you Euro on your card but your statement will state dollars.
I like it... Different but good all lite duty blade... The lanyard piece is also the ferro rod scraper or looks like it could be used for that... I want one:)
Sandvik 12C27 Swedish steel is of superior quality High toughness and durability is not plain steel as you have listed one of the best steel in the world in relative terms so that this knife belongs to exceptional knives because such steel is hard to find and on knives even more expensive than $ 100 .
I love standard Opinel knives, but I have zero use for this one. I do find it gimmicky, but the truth is I have much better versions of those tools on other knives, and in my pocket. I want a folder to be what it should be, and do what it's supposed to do, which is cut and carve. Gimmicks just make a great knife fatter and longer for no good reason.
All good points and though the knife does cut and perform well, I feel they're stretching to reach the survival/bushcraft market. I appreciate the view and comment.
TheZyrcone yeah except if you didn't waterproof the handle, the wooden handle will swell up and lock the knife close. I can't imagine making a synthetic handle to float would be that difficult.
You remember when you posted it on FB, I ordered it the next day from Opinel direct from France. They had it here in a week. I also ordered the No.8 Bushwacker (Trekking) in khaki and a No. 15 Slim knife for a folding filet knife. The knife is unique and functional. Some may say it's gimmicky but at least Opinel is trying to branch out and it seems like a quality and durable product. Thanks for checking it out Chris. They should be available in the U.S. within a month.
Sweet I want to check out that Bushwacker for sure. I'll be on the lookout for when you post that review. I hope this gets lots of views quick I'm sure the news will keep spreading and you have everything covered in your video
Ah I understand, when the first Victorinox One-Hand showed up all of them had serrations and ppl started to grinding them off by themselves , I did not wanted to do is so I'm stuck with one of those now :/.
I have both. They are totally different tools for very different functions. Also the eight is tiny in my hand. The 12cm handle on a 10 cm blade suits me fine. I do use the shackle spanner on the 8 but not when I'm skinning!
This thing is sorta silly. An Opinel is good because it's cheap, simple, and elegant. This is none of those things. They're trying to compete with Bear Grylls in the Orange and Black Rubber category.
I would call it a cheap knife, and what does the color of handle have to do with bear grylls ? You cant compare knives just because of the color of handle... and by the way they also make it in green
Bill Kong Agreed. I do appreciate that its polymer though, its more sanitary for food processing. I would be tempted to take a hacksaw to it to get rid of all the useless junk at the back and thats never a good sign.
Jack Woods Carbon steel is easier to sharpen and takes a great edge and thats what they normally use. This one is stainless steel though. I believe its Sandvik 12c27, same type Mora uses. I dont agree with what you are saying about needing a professional to get "supersteel" knives sharp though. You can easily hand sharpen such knives as long as you have a decent honing stone with a fine grit side. You just need work with it a bit longer. Alternatively you a belt strop and some autosol.
It’s OK. I’m neutral. I’ll stick with my NO. 9. The simple, old-fashioned feel, appeals to me. But, if someone were interested in the gadgety stuff, I definitely wouldn’t be concerned about quality, and would feel comfortable recommending an Opinel. And, I’m not saying the gadgety stuff is bad. I’ve carried a Swiss Army Knife for years, and it would be a cold day in hell before I ever gave it up. But, let’s face it, Swiss Army Knives could certainly be considered a bit gadgety. LOL... Good review. Sub’d. 👍 Had to edit. I was just thinking: I’m probably going to end up getting one of those. I have a sneaking suspicion that Opinel won’t be making these indefinitely. It’s something really different than any other Opinel I’ve seen. If they stop producing them, I’ll have a collectors item. If they don’t stop producing them, I’ll have the oddest Opinel being produced. Either way: WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! lol...
Opening an Opinel is easy. So many people complain. Even when a wooden one is soaked: All you do is open the lock, tap the toe [or in this case the belt loop] on your boot and the blade drops enough to grip. ruclips.net/video/m_f25P1OkTM/видео.html This isn't new - It's been called "Le coup du Savoiard" since 1809. This is a hunting knife. The hook is for gutting so use the blade to cut cord. If you want to cut trees use an axe! If you are worried about zombies or insurgents try politics. This knife does what it's meant to do! It's a great scraper for pelts. Put the gut hook and fire stick in your pocket. Keep the knife closed and it will clear the fell down to the hide on a fox beautifully. I'm very glad it is washable - I wouldn't advise using the whistle after using the gut hook! :) Thank you Opinel.
Great tip on opening a swollen knife. Opinel states on the box this is a 'Nature/Survival/Hunting' knife and even goes as far to print "BUSHCRAFT" on the front of the box. They also call that tool a "cutting hook", not a gutting hook. I see your point though as I don't think it's meant to cut but would make a good gutter. Appreciate you watching and the comments.
Sorry mate, didn't mean to come across harsh! I'm British! I think that there are often translation issues when reading Opinel's own text. On the UK version of their website [which has me drooling - I'm a very big Opinel fan] they have a shop - it maybe where we both got our knives from. I find the best descriptions there. I only gut and tan roadkill so I haven't used the gut hook where I really need it, just on small stuff. I have to be very lucky and VERY quick to snaffle a roadkill deer! No one leaves those around! Thanks for the vid - appreciate the effort.
No issue my friend. I was just reading what was on the box. However, one website does say (gutting hook). I don't do roadkill anymore. I once picked up a whitetail deer that I watched get hit by the car in front of me, and that I had to finish off with my pocket knife. When I starting gutting it the stomach had exploded and guts were everywhere inside, tainting the meat imo. However, had that been a survival situation, I'd have eaten it. Thanks again.
I’m glad I saw this, that gut hook SUCKS! I thought it was a gimmicky tool when I first saw it, now I’m sure. Opinels have their limits but are great if used properly.
Excellent video review. Everything you have said backs up my argument that you should stick to the wooden type and carry a sheep dog whistle - just like I do (smug comment). If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I don't think you are doing the right thing with the hook, it is made to cut through a seat belt. The other side is a life hammer, and is made to break a window.
+Robert Verbrugge its actually a ver standard gut hook for animals so u can gut clean n not nick the gut sack n ruin your meat . is on alot of classic hunting knoves. is very useful for its intended purpose . not fucking parachord u have a knife lol
Ahhhhh why does opinel keep making these bs knives? The reason people love opinels is because of their extreme functionality, value for money, and simplicity! Adding a synthetic handle for their original deign would really make it an excellent folder that will still be very functional in wet environments ! This full of bs knife is really just overpriced junk with unnecessary bells and whistles (quite literally). People have been trying to waterproof wooden opinel handles for Ages! With limited success of course. I truly can't understand why they won't simply make a simple no bs original design opinel with synthetic handle.
I agree that a 'normal' opinel with synthetic scales would be nice. They tried here at something different, which they succeeded at, but is it worth it...meh. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Shame that opinel made a "tactical" knife after all. I love Opinel for the simple and honest design. Every thing does not need a bottle opener, wihistle and window smasher. Good video tho.
Nice review but I think this is a dud with no real practical advantage to the regular knife. Always thought the Opinel blades too thin for anything heavier than cutting fruit band veg.
ok no lol. everything about opinel makes it unfit as this kind of knife. opinel needs to stick with implicity. make special editions if you really know what knife guys want and you need to change it up
Agree standard Opinels are classic simplicity, but at least they are making an effort to do something different. I give them some credit. Thanks for watching
Hey there, just by the way. You can open - as many of you surely know - an Opinel with the "Coup de Savoyard" as the french say. Sometimes the wooden handle makes it difficult to open the blade (could be because the wood is wet). True. It does work on this knife as well. Stay safe.
The "lanyard hole" is the perfect pry tool. So many guys destroy their knives because they pry with the blade, I think that is what that piece of metal is good for. Nice knife. Nice review
No prying with this knife blade. The lanyard might work but I wouldn't rely on it. Thanks for watching
I like the look of that blade. Looks like it's a good cutter. The lanyard looks atrocious but at least you can use it without it. The handle also looks nice and grippy.
It cuts great, very sharp. Agree on the lanyard hole piece. Thank you for watching.
Thats actually pretty neat. I can see a place for that attached to the harness of a rucksack for sure.
It would work good as a backup for sure. But still have it when to want to carve a little. Thanks for watching.
Cleusueau! quick the French police whistle!!!!
I really like the design. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping to check it out and for the comment.
Congrats on 777 subs!! Cool knife!
The Bear Grylls Opinel? ;)
It is a bit different. Thanks for watching. I am planning a 777 subs GAW here very soon so stay tuned.
That maybe a Lanyard hole as well, but it shure is a Hammer to smash a Carwindow - the other side is to cut the safety belt....
Correct, and yes I know. Thank you for watching and commenting.
that's a really good woods knife, even with all the gimmicks.
Not big on serrations either. Can't work out why if you've never used them in the outdoors ever why you would find them totally necessary in a survival situation???
I like the style and color but agree the lanyard needs a redesign but understand its purpose for the cutter, cool review, thanks for sharing.
I agree. If it served another purpose like a wrench or something but even then. Thanks for watching
Nice review.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting knife; thanks for sharing
Thanks for checking it out Dean. It is a unique design and approach for Opinel.
I do like the style of grip on the handle.
It's ok and better with the hook removed.

Thank you Micah. It's different but not too bad.
As a curiosity/collection piece, it's ok...otherwise nothing beats Hultafors OK4 knife as a (very) lightweight bush/survival knife that's also cheap. You can pair with it with a SAK ranger (camping) and you have a substantial combo

the "coup de savoyard"
Thanks for making this video. This is my first time hearing about this knife. How do you rate the edge retention?
I haven't used it enough yet but after what you saw here it's still shaving hair. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I believe the side of the gut hook is for striking the ferro rod.
Nope, too dull, no edge, but you could put one on it. Thanks
pure badassery. like a bigger version of the victorinox one handed. that'd be nice if it had somthing to stop your hand from sliding up.
Noah Koenig Thank you stopping by and commenting.
sameold77 i think they call it a # 12 because of the small knife adding some extra cutting length.
Hopefully they, Opinel that is, will make a #13-version of this!😍😍😍
Funny. Thanks for watching
Nice presentation 👍🏼
Like you already said this knife is not edc-able, but I think it's a good backup for the car or bag.
What I would prefer for edc carry is the Opinel Outdoor with a blade without serrations. I'm just thinking if it would be possible to exchange the blade of the Outdoor to the "normal" No. 8 model?! nice certainly to see opi beef up they are great knives beefy is better though thanks for showing. it tom
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Nice video. I can sure see this one for the lightweight backpacker as only knife and for the bushcrafter and suvialist as a back up blade.
Yes it would make a decent backpacking knife. Thanks for watching.
If Ron Popiel designed a knife.
“New from Ronco! The Pocket Opinel!”
Hahahahaha!
It would be a good companion to the Pocket Fishermen..
Funny. I laughed at that one. Thanks for watching.
This thing is sorta silly. An Opinel is good because it's cheap, simple, and elegant. This is none of those things. They're trying to compete with Bear Grylls in the Orange and Black Rubber category.
I can understand that point for sure and I appreciate the feedback. Thank you for watching.
I can under stand the Orange as it make it easier to find if dropped but I see what you mean about the rubber.
Sub’d. 👍
Had to edit.
Either way: WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! lol...
I carry a SAK everyday. You have a good point if they stop making it, get one. Appreciate the sub.
As the title mentioned I thought that the review on the opinel number 12 and not 10
Explorer 12. I understand your point though. Thanks.
Opening an Opinel is easy. So many people complain. Even when a wooden one is soaked: All you do is open the lock, tap the toe [or in this case the belt loop] on your boot and the blade drops enough to grip.

This isn't new - It's been called "Le coup du Savoiard" since 1809.
Thank you Opinel.
Good video thanks
Thank you for watching.
I’m glad I saw this, that gut hook SUCKS! I thought it was a gimmicky tool when I first saw it, now I’m sure. Opinels have their limits but are great if used properly.
I suppose it may work better to cut actual animal hide, wish I could have tested that. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video review. Everything you have said backs up my argument that you should stick to the wooden type and carry a sheep dog whistle - just like I do (smug comment). If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Thanks for the support. I do like the simple wooden Opinels.
Not on ebay yet
I saw one on ebay but it's from Italy. I think they'll be available around the end of the month, or early September. Thanks for watching.
I thought this looked very gimmicky until you showed us how they worked
I understand why you thought that as did I, but it does work quite well and does have multiple features. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great knife, but did anyone noticed daddy long legs in 1:34? :)
They are everywhere on my property. I bet they're in my other videos. Thanks for watching.
I like that. sweet.
It's different, functional but with a tiny bit of gimmick. Thanks
Lol. I like it though. Its cool looking
that hook seems pretty dull...
It didn't perform great on the 550 cord but I think it will work for gutting an animal. I'll find out this hunting season. Thanks for watching.
Did the gut hook skin?
I don't hunderstand why you cut a young tree, when you have the bossibility to choose an old tree
It's my land, my tree, and I did not want it there, so yea. Thanks for watching.
Shame that opinel made a "tactical" knife after all. I love Opinel for the simple and honest design. Every thing does not need a bottle opener, wihistle and window smasher. Good video tho.
Simple design is nice. This one they tried something different, it's not for everyone for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Not even a minute in .. I stopped this video. Opinels are made with wooden handles period!!!!
Fair enough
Nice review but I think this is a dud with no real practical advantage to the regular knife. Always thought the Opinel blades too thin for anything heavier than cutting fruit band veg.
Yes it is a bit gimmicky but hey, they tried. Thank you
Gimmicky.
Yea I mentioned that. Thanks
Anybody noticed the huge fuck off spider at 1:27 ?
I didn't see it at that time but there are lots of Grandaddy Long Legs around. Thanks for watching.
ok no lol. everything about opinel makes it unfit as this kind of knife. opinel needs to stick with implicity. make special editions if you really know what knife guys want and you need to change it up
Agree standard Opinels are classic simplicity, but at least they are making an effort to do something different. I give them some credit. Thanks for watching
Rip me
Thank you for watching.
+sameold77 do you know when it would be available in the land of trans fat?
+Joshua Gonzales I heard the end of August beginning of September it should hit retailers in the U.S. But don't hold me to it.
+sameold77 aye
shittiest knife brand in the world
I would not say that at all. I like their knives. Thanks for watching.
