    Great interview of these 2 great players. Chriss is very funny! I used to watch her practicing at Holiday Park with her father. I started playing tennis there in 1975 and played until 7 years ago. I lloved her style of playing and I tried to imitate her many years ago. I just heard Chriss has Ovarian Cancer and my heart goes out to her. I wish her all the best! She's a beautiful lady and I'm sure she will triumph in that battle too.

      Yes.Chrissie was cool and never lost her temper or showed dissent. Recall a line call which went against her, I think Wimbledon '87 against Martina on a very crucial point. She just quizzed whether the call was correct and moved on. No 'challenges' those days and she just accepted it. It was a wrong call and replays showed it should have been her point. It was toe to toe at that stage and she may well have won it as she was playing so well.

Pleasantly surprised by flippancy on Evert’s part, whoever would have expected that from her! Tries breaking the obvious tension there, maybe. Who can tell? Let’s stick to the matter at hand. These two know what their talking about. In addition to being legends, they've been watching all these players very carefully, old and new. However, tennis is just so mental that anything could happen. For 2018, Serena could come back and defend her AO title or maybe even win all 4 slams and get that calendar slam. However, for all we know, she may not win any slam. She may just be too distracted with trying to come back to play AND raising her child. The main thing I agree with is the possibility (emphasis on possibility) that we could have different winners of each slam. We could have serena for one, halep for one, pliskova and muguruza for another or possibly venus, then there's svitolina or ostapenko or even an oddball who's not even in the top 30, not to mention other strong American women like Keys or Stephens.
    To summarize: 2018 will be, as Chris said, a "banner year for women's tennis".

    • @rporther
      @rporther 6 лет назад +2

      I always wondered if it was just me about the rising trend of these timeouts for bathroom and " injuries ". Seems to occur moreso when those who perceive themselves as the victor before the match starts to find themselves behind. Are the breaks justified because the science of the evolving game of tennis says that the demands on the athletes' bodies have increased exponentially or is it that negotiated sponsors' contracts are in the hanging....and ' we ' don't want to lose? Awwww...... There are rules yes but what is the criteria for making them? Too many times and ad nauseam do we see referees taking THEIR time to decide how to apply the rules of ITF to a timeout situation.

    I think they're confused on what active means. Serena has best serve and best forehand. Venus or Muguruza has best backhand. Halep best athleticism.

    Serena, Maria and Vika rulling the whole season, of course if they play enough. They usually never play the whole schedule, but always come to play ready. I would like to see Serena-Vika-Maria rivalries spread out in 2018. That would be most exciting. 😀

    Serena has a great forehand- the first time she hits it in a rally- every time she has to hit it after that in a rally- the technique breaks down and the errors flow.

  • @sk8ingcoach1

    Serve: Serena
    Forehand: On a good day i think Keys has a huge forehand. But overall probably Venus or Halep. Maybe Pliskova. Love me some Sania Mirza forehand though.
    Backhand: Id say Wozniacki but i can understand people saying muguruza.
    Most improved: Although Wozniacki had a great year, she has already been no1. So id say Coco V most improved. Not a fan of ostapenko.
    Maiden Slam: I'd say it's more likely to see Pliskova win one. But i really want Halep, Wozniacki or Radwanska to get one. Pliskova will get more than one eventually.
    Rivalry: I enjoyed Pliskova vs Wozniacki this year. But my favourite rekindled rivalry this year was Venus vs Petra at US open.
    Predictions. Serena will win a slam. Maybe wimbledon. but i think if she does comeback, she will be trying her absolute hardest to win Aus Open again and prove to people that she is still the greatest.
    Id be ok with a shot clock, but maybe give an extra 10 seconds for rallies over a certain amount of hits. I dont mind the bung toss (mainly cause i dont want venus to be screwed).

      I think Serena will at LEAST win one slam. Maybe 2, maybe 3, hell maybe 4 because she's Serena. But she's hardly EVER had a year without winning a slam and I don't see that starting soon especially when Venus was extremely close 2 times at 37.

    • @sk8ingcoach1
      @sk8ingcoach1 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah i mean i don't think she'll win the french. Her game is amazing but not as suited to Clay and i think she is less inspired there. And i think coming back and trying to win the Australian Open is a big ask, not impossible cause it's Serena, but definitely a big challenge. But i think wimbledon or Us open is far more likely.

    Wow, Evert is REALLY rude to Navratilova here, what gives?? This interview should've been a fun one, but Evert is being so testy! I've never seen her so agitated in a joint interview with Martina, did they just have a fight or something? Martina couldn't have been nicer and more forgiving of Chris during this interview.

    Wow! Really Chris going after Venus's bathroom breaks before a match,Venus has an illness where dry mouth is a symptom so she may hydrate herself before a match then needs to use the restroom right before it starts. Or her medication or diet that she uses to combat her illness could be the cause(plus this isn't something Venus has done from my recollection through her career it's something that started recently so it could be connected to her physical issues) so why take shots with out all the proper info? And anyway as a tennis fan using the RR before a match seems 100 times more respectful than during the match as others due between sets then sometimes taking their sweet time coming out. Even Martina's ball toss issue may have been about Venus,she does that often as due others BTW to me Screaming/screeching on the court like Maria Sharapova does is worse than before match RR breaks. Bottom line is CE you should inquire before you try to make something an issue reminds me of years ago when an L.A. Times sports writer went after Venus (before she was diagnosed) because she said after losing a close match that during the match she began to feel very tired(one of the symptoms of her illness) and acted as if Venus was making unsportsman like excuses(Venus is not in the habit of making excuses)when Venus was just being honest,that's an example of why having all the facts is a good thing.

      @@jimmylim0225; Yes, J nid got the maiden GS for both Halep & Wozniacki correct [Thumbs UP], and return of Angelique Kerber & Petra Kvitova.
      However, though Serena Williams had two GS Finals, she did not make it back into the top 10 yet. Ostapenko, remained outside top ten, did get SF's but somewhat inconsistent too. Garcia was in the top 10 much of the year, then dropped at then end.
      Sloane Stephens remains in top 10, mostly top 5.
      Am not certain why Martina favors Karolina Pliskova so much?! She is so very inconsistent in every way; her serve, her shot making. Lacks good footwork/movement, building points. My prediction was, and continues that she will continue to drop, probably outside top 10. There are so many other players who have more consistency who are rising and she will fall as a result.
      With Naomi Osaka, Sloane Stephens, Elina Svitolina, Petra Kvitova, rising of Kiki Bertens, Daria Kasatikina, Aryna Sabalenka, Antastaija Sevastova, Ashleigh Barty, Caroline Garcia [getting back on track], Simona Halep remaining, Caroline Wozniack seems to be holding well still, certainly better than Karolina Pliskova, Add Serena Williams, Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, Julia Georges.
      :-)

      Chris had a point about the length of bathroom break. You can't eliminate them altogether. But the umpire needs to take more control over them. That and the length of injury timeouts or if they have them at all.

    • @whitestar655
      @whitestar655 7 лет назад +1

      Good point Vicki. Bathroom breaks and injury time outs have become abused to the point where they're an irritant to audiences, disrespectful to waiting opponents, and are little more than gamesmanship. If you've a long standing, chronic condition that requires more regular breaks then there exists an argument for allowing those breaks; but where they're employed after gruelling sets for the purpose of exacting an extended break, then they become little more than cheating.

    Well, seams like the big hitters aren't on top this year. Halep has been nr. 1 almost all year and she has many chances to finish the year as a leader.
    It's kinda funny not to consider her chances even if she's been in top 4 constantly in recent years. Chris Evert anticipated a RG win, but that's it, just a win.
    No words for Kerber also. Ok, 2017 was a bad year for her, but you can't rule her out from start for 2018...

  • @51Dss

    I like the idea of getting rid of the let rule, and getting a fault call for a fake ball toss. As for leaving the tennis court during a match It should be disallowed except when climate conditions are extreme. Injury time outs should be disallowed - if a player gets dizzy or gets muscle cramps or blisters...etc those should be considered "loss of condition" and at the point if the player is unable to play within the time guidelines it should be considered a walk over. I would love to see something done about the outrageous vocalizations during play...also would like to see them either enforce the no coaching rule or do away with it altogether.
