Couldn’t have said it better- king said Chris could recharge her batteries day to day better than anyone . Her concentration was just not on the court but on her daily routine of sleep , practicing , eating at right time . Every moment was spent getting ready or playing and maximizing her feel for the ball with her racket . She loved not losing . I attended a workshop junior tennis lesson with jimmy evert in early 1980’s and one thing Jimmy asked me “ in an hour one of the two of you will walk off as the one who loses - is it going to be you ? And he reminded everyone on clay - more points in clay are won not by hitting winners but by collecting points off your opponents misses. It takes incredible discipline and concentration , drive to win points this way . Keep head still , watch the ball . Take racket back the second you can tell where that ball is going to give yourself the best chance to get to the ball early so you have more choices for shot selection . If you get there late only option is to send the ball back in same direction which gives your opponent the feeling of dictating the point . And other : are you going to remember an hour from now innthis heat how much you wanted to win before the match - will you wilt first ? If you quit you’ll be like everyone else . Chris famous line when down in third set to get herself motivated was imagining the look of joy and superiority if the won on their face when shaking hands at net . That says volumes .

The biggest problem Chris had in the early 80s was not switching to a graphite racket soon enough. When she finally did, her strokes gained 20% more depth/power which troubled Martina way more. I still think Martina would have won more matches than Chris during that time, but it wouldn’t have been so lopsided. Just look at the difference between Evert in the ‘83 US Open final compared to ‘84. Such a huge difference.

Chris was 37-43 (.463) against Martina. She was 1272-103 (.925) against everybody else. She made it to the quarter finals in 54 of the 56 grand slam tournaments in which she played (.964). She made it to the semi finals in 52 of the 56 (.929). No other player had that amazing level of consistent greatness over such an extended period of time. Just think about that... FIFTY TWO times out of 56 - into the semis. Can you imagine any player beating that record?
She also dominated on one surface probably more so than any other player. She won 125 consecutive clay court matches from August of 1973 to May of 1979. That was a run of almost six years. During that streak she played 258 sets - and went to a third set in just 8 of the 125 matches. 71 of those sets were 6-0... which means that 28% of the sets she played during that streak were 6-0. She did not lose a single set on clay in FOUR different years: 1973, 1976, 1977 & 1978. Has any other player had a three year run in which they didn't lose a single match on their best surface?? Let alone not losing a single set! Rafa has been magnificent on clay... but even he has never been THAT dominating on clay.
During that phenomenal streak, Chris didn't play in the French Open for the 3 year stretch of 1976, 77, 78... because she chose to play in Billie Jean King's World Team Tennis. She almost surely would have won those 3 French Opens - and that would put her at 21 grand slam singles titles. There were also TEN times that Evert did not participate in the Australian Open during the prime of her career. In 6 of those 10... she was the #1 player in the world, in 2 others she was #2 in the world, and in 2 others she was #3 in the world. So it is within reason to estimate that she could have won another five GS singles titles... had she chosen to play those ten Australian Opens. That would put her at 26 GS singles titles.

@ a BeatleFan4ever. As huge a Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova fan as I am, and as great as the accomplishments of those two all-time great tennis champions are, it is important to bear in mind that a major reason (beyond their enormous tennis talent) for the phenomenal statistical percentage of times that Evert and Navratilova got to at least the quarterfinals and semifinals at the 4 majors is because she and Martina Navratilova had "tomato can" opposition in the early rounds of those 4 major tournaments who they could easily defeat 6-0, 6-0 or 6-1, 6-1, or 6-1, 6-2 or 6-2, 6-1. Evert and Navratilova during their dominant years on the women's pro tennis tour had no great competition to challenge them (other than Tracy Austin and Evonne Goolagong) until the arrival of Steffi Graf (and later Monica Seles) on the women's tour! For example, although Hana Mandlikova had a lot of talent , she wasted her talent and lacked mental toughness to be a dominant champion. Even though Evert played against Billie Jean King and Margaret Court, when Evert began dominating women's tennis, Court and King were both past their prime.

    • @aBeatleFan4ever
      @aBeatleFan4ever 3 года назад

@@michaelbarlow6610 - In my view, if one wants to try and compare players from different eras... then how dominant they were during their own era is the best measure. A player can only play during the time that they happened to live. Margaret Court dominated her era. Evert and Navratilova dominated their era. Graf dominated until Seles came along (and Steffi was very lucky to have Monica removed from that period). If Evert or Navratilova had the other one eliminated from the tour the way Graf had her best opponent taken out of the game - imagine how many GS titles they would have won. Chris & Martina kept each other from racking up an astronomical number of GS titles (as well as the number of years as the #1 player - and overall titles won).
Some might cite the players on the tour as simply being a lot stronger from top to bottom since the era of Evert & Navratilova. But here is a question for those people: If today's tour players are "so much stronger than before" - then why have Roger, Rafa & Novak been able to dominate the rest of the tour for all these years? Roger, Rafa & Novak have basically lapped the field. Imagine how many GS titles Roger would have had if he hadn't had to deal with Rafa & Novak. And the same is true for Rafa and Novak. Any one of them would have easily surpassed 30 GS titles if not for the for those other two amazing rivals.
When Chris and Martina were dominating the game over a 14 year period back in 1974-87... they won 35 of the 48 GS tournaments they played in (a .729 winning percentage). Over the last 17 years (from 2004-2020) Roger, Rafa & Novak have won 56 of the 67 GS tournaments that were held (a .836 winning percentage).
It seems that the all-time great players of any era... find a way to DOMINATE the players of their own time period.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 3 года назад

@ aBeatleFan4ever. I agree (and have stated numerous times in comments on RUclips) that Federer , Djokovic and Nadal's statistical achievements are grossly inflated compared to the great male players of the previous and earlier eras in tennis history because those 3 players have had no great competition (especially serve-and-volley competition) to challenge them on the men's pro tennis tour and at the 4 major tournaments, which explains ,for example, Federer's grossly inflated achievement of getting to 23 consecutive semifinals at the 4 majors. Sure he got to 23 consecutive semifinals at the majors -because he didn't have to play against Nadal until the semifinals and finals at the 4 major tournaments and had no great players to challenge him prior to the semifinals of the 4 majors! From 1978-2000 there were a total of 10 HOFers on the men's pro tennis tour ( Connors, Borg, Lendl, Vilas, Wilander, McEnroe, Agassi, Sampras, Becker and Edberg) and at any given time during that period, anywhere from 5-7 HOFers were playing at the same time on the men's tour. In the Federer, Djokovic and Nadal era, by contrast, there have only been 3 HOFers on the men's tour-those 3 players! Tilden was the most dominant male tennis player in the history of the game with a 90%+ winning percentage. But Budge was also dominant in the 1930's as was Laver in the 1960's. Jack Kramer said that at his absolute best, Ellsworth Vines was the greatest tennis player he ever saw, but that on a day-in-day-out, match-in-match-out basis, Budge was more consistent. LewHoad at his absolute best was virtually unbeatable. Not even Laver could defeat Hoad when Hoad played his absolute best. But Hoad, like Vines, was inconsistent. As dominant and great as Evert and Navratilova were on the women's pro tennis tour, the fact remains that they had exceedingly weak competion on the women's tennis tour to challenge them until the arrival of Graf and later Seles on the women's tour.

@@michaelbarlow6610 wrote this: "In the Federer, Djokovic and Nadal era, by contrast, there have only been 3 HOFers on the men's tour-those 3 players!"
Andy Murray is an obvious HOFer (11 GS finals, 3 GS titles, 2 Olympic gold medals in singles, year end #1 in 2016, 41 weeks at #1).
Stan Wawrinka will certainly be a HOFer... having won 3 of the 4 GS tournaments.
Lleyton Hewitt is a HOFer... with 2 year end #1s (2001 and 2002) plus two GS titles.
Andy Roddick is a HOFer - a year end #1 in 2003 and a 5 time GS finalist.
Agassi played during some in this period - with a GS final in 2005.
Thiem has been in 4 GS finals with one win... and will likely be a HOFer.

"Against most of the other players I played against, I had a winning record" That is an understatement. Here are the past or future slam finalists who she played against in her career, that she had a losing record to: Martina, Graf, Austin.
Here are the rest that she played : Margaret Court, Richey, Tomanova King, Wade, Stove, Durr, Casals, Mastoff, Goolagong, Morazova, Barker, Melville-Reid, Mandlikova, Sukova, Shriver, Turnbull, Jausivec, Ruzizi, Jordan, Garrison, Tauziat, Jaeger, Sabatini, Fernandez, Sanchez, Seles, Martinez, Novatna,

Yes. Richey was almost in that first group. She won their first 5 matches. In their next match Richey had match point at 7-5, 5-0, 15-40 with Evert serving. Chris faulted her first serve and was down to her second, teetering on the brink of defeat. Somehow she managed to pull herself back up from the abyss and win, in what was the most remarkable come-back I've ever seen. Take care.

Also, her records are close with those who have a winning record against her. However, with the others, her record is pretty impressive whether it's Court or King against whom she established a winning record from the start if I remember correctly, to Mandlikova, Sabatini, Shriver and others of the generation after her.

What I love about Chris is that she has little ego. I don’t think she realized what she truly means to women’s tennis and, frankly, I think she’s completely underrated in the history of the game. To me she’s the GOAT. Had she not skipped the AO so many t8mes and had she played the French during her WTT days, she may have the most Slams right now. Her consistency is unmatched. If not for her two handed backhand, the women’s game may not even exist today. It certainly wouldn’t look anything like it does since almost 100% of the women use a two handed. As I said she has no ego. She’s always complimentary of others and when she commentates she doesn’t refer back to,herself. I remember Martina being asked during a match on Tennis Channl if she thought that Serena was the greatest woman she’s ever seen play and her response was “well I never saw myself play so I can’t say”. Chris would never say something like that.

On a NBC broadcast showing Evert walk the trek between the Wimbledon’s locker room to center court she said she made that walk 9 times for the finals . She actually played 10 Wimbkedon finals .( 73, 74 , 76, 78, 79 ,80 ,81 , 82 , 84, 85 ) . It shows Chris lives in the present which she was the master of when she played in her matches - not dwelling on the last point or thinking about later in the match - she concentrated in the present better than any one who ever played tennis which is why she has the greatest winning percentage of all times in matches won - she won 90 percent of all of her professional matches ) . She doesn’t dwell on her record either .

Interesting thing about Chrissie, apparently she never showed any talent for any sports other than tennis. Of course it's pretty much impossible for anyone to be great at two different sports. No matter how talented, a person can't divide themselves into two. But often they will show promise at different sports. For example, many tennis-players male and female can make a decent show at soccer. Chrissie always seemed to me to be the first of the glamorous, beautiful, tennis girls. Before her you had women like Margaret Court, Billie-Jean King, Virginia Wade, Rosie Casals - none of them exactly head-turners in the way that Chrissie was. A player who is often forgotten about now because of the Chrissie/Martina rivalry is Hana Mandlikova. She was highly talented and also very attractive, wonderful to watch on court. She did manage to win four grand-slams, often having to get past Martina AND Chrissie on the way. Hana came along during the second-half of Chrissie's and Martina's careers, but they were both still pretty dominant.

Chrissie is the you know queen. Every two seconds, she says it. Makes her look silly. Martina is so much better in this respect. Chris is the worst in history when it comes to uttering those dreadful words, but she is still my favorite tennis player ever.

Never since Chris and Martina has there been any really great rivalries in women's tennis, with the exception of Seles/Graf, But that was only 15 times

My idol but most of all her being the ice queen. The ice king was borg. Tried 2 emulate their pokerface in court. If only Chris was not too ladylike or girlie on court- i believe she wud be the Goat. She became tough on her last 2 french open wins when she beat martina.

Are there any women tennis players who were/are more attractive than Chris Evert? I think not.

  • @banksiasong

It was a great rivalry for the women's game, but it got usurped and supercharged by the media to be about women's sexuality, which was another dreadful move by the Press.
Martina played Vintage doubles at Roland Garros this year (2019), it's a shame that Chris was not her partner.
    Perhaps at another venue ...

Marion Bartoli is a way better Tennis player than Chris Evert.
Marion bartoli had belief in herself that Chris Evert as a great tennis player doesn't have even being world no.1 to win Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is a grass court tournament and therefore amongst the medium surfaces. which means medium rallies dictated by serve and therefore less exertion of energy during a point and shorter matches in general. you get value for your shot! fat and short or tall and thin!
when you play 3 sets against 5 sets for men, it is always an advantage.
Marion Bartoli played a more strategic than a grind type of tennis in tournaments. good volleying skills as compared to Chris Evert even in execution.
Marion Bartoli had the belief that she could win and in contrast to Steffi Graff who believed that Bartoli would wear herself down and just lose(not that they don't have to play, just that they had to hang in there long enough for her to break down). Most of them slightly underestimated what she was doing in tournaments. She was an inexperienced player by that point who had proven herself as a former top 10 player.
Her winning was really a surprise i.e out of the blue with already having made the finals twice but her consistency was questionable.
She had unique two handed forehands and backhands. That was easy to replicate and master but once mastered it was going to be lethal. That was what spectators saw in tournaments of Marion Bartoli to a great extent.
at Wimbledon 2013 she had some luck from the draw as 15th seed. she never played a top 10 player en route to her victory. the finalist she played: Venus Williams had already beaten Agnieszka Radwańska en route to the final.
Venus Williams was playing her best but was probably worn out a lot by her battles with Agnieszka Radwańska and others. Venus Williams was in the form of her life but Bartoli had the luck of the draw.
Regardless of whether your fat or not, if you make your shots even Chris Evert may not be able to return it at Wimbledon. so if you are playing near perfection and having consistency with your shots then you are playing on a level field.
then speaking of fat, technically Marion Bartoli may be classified as fat, yet she was the most successful female tennis player.
Bartoli wasn’t really playing a specific style and really had weakness in tournaments and most of her shots had some vigor in it that Chris Evert generally doesn't necessarily have. Here return games were spot on and had more errors and more importantly she can get Chris Evert to errors first.
all in all, this was a victory that was easily replicable or Bartoli after this mediocre run. She had belief and luck along with inexperience that allowed her to win her only Grand Slam. Marion Bartoli was dubbed as unfit and fat. She still made it to Grand Slam finals. Even in her Wembdon win 2013 she wasn’t fit. Marion Bartoli is an inspiration.
It was really a fluke because Bartoli won by dropping sets and beat a few top 20 players along the way.
Winning by dropping a set means you played really close to perfection along with dropping the level enough that allowed anyone to comeback and take a set from you.
being fat may seem a hindrance, but is a limitation if you want it to be one.
Honestly calling her fat in tournaments is really justifiable because she wasn’t thin but fat is really appropriate.
And yes, tall and lanky players like Chris Evert don’t always win , especially in the topsy turvy women’s tour. slightly fatter players can generate more power than extremely thin and tall players like Chris Evert.

      @dschwa00 6 лет назад +1

She is not intelligent... If you like her and you think otherwise, obviously, you’re entitled to your opinion... I think she’s annoying and she is only a commentator because of her career on the court.... If for some reason I am interested in a match that she has unfortunately been assigned to call ... it’s the MUTE button for me!!!!
The following are just as horrible or worse... Jimmy Arias, Kris McKendry, Leif Shiras and, Tracy Austin and Justin Gimelstob..... In fact, most of the Tennis Channel announcers for the exception Jim Courier and Ted Robinson... are just a waste!!!! On your favorite’s ESPN, she is pretty much it!!
Finally, ask Greg Norman what he thinks!!!!
Again, if you like her that’s wonderful... Thanks for the inquiry!

And it's obvious you have some prejudice against her even if she was the best commentator out there. You just don't like her. And that's fine. You're entitled to your own opinion, but it doesn't mean it's true. She's a good commentator better with women matches than men, but you can tell she has a lot of insight especially with what's going on in the women's game.
