Ron maybe a different set of bags with the slick cloth from protektor which I use. When using leather I use baby powder on the rest and rear bag for lubricity.

I called up Winchester and sent it off to them, I requested they swap it to Walnut but call me about the cost to upgrade to the AAA French Walnut…they never called and I got it back with a gorgeous AAA French Walnut stock. My Sako S20 in 3006 is a super accurate rifle. It shoots any ammo I buy sub MOA. In some cases you actually get what you pay for. My second rifle is a Tikka 3tx in 270 that is also super accurate. For my money you can't beat Sako and Tikka.
On the Weatherby,the tight spot you found when checking the free floating, it may be the front sling stud my protrude up above the stock enough to effect accuracy. I had a Remington 788 in 22-250 that had this issue. Itthrew shots all over. Once i shortened the stud so it cleared the barrel it shot very well. Sub 1/2 minute out to 500 yards or so.

Just purchased a Sako Hunter in 30-06, Talley Mounts and Nightforce SHV 3-10X. What an awesome rifle shoots various factory loads to 1 moa……. Highest Recommendation!
Well..uh..my old Savage 111 flat top in 30-06 set in a Boyd’s laminate stock and epoxy bedded sporting a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3x10x50mm..EGW HD mounts and rings will hold slightly better than that..cold barrel..everytime everyday. I’ve spent around $1,000 total for this rifle. Just saying without being a smart ace
60+ years collecting reloading and hunting and Sako is my favorite to hunt with out of hundreds of guns or the years. Love their older models and have several of their newer models as well and they all shoot great with almost any factory load and with reloads they shoot better then a lot of my custom builds do🙌
Minimal work on Savage rifles to achieve really repeatable accuracy. Sometimes nothing but too with quality mounts/rings snd a decent scope. I do not run complicated scopes as a rule. Big game hunting rifles do not need huge complicated dial in optics. And I’ve taken a lot of game in my life. Just decent proven optics not cheap scopes. I will say yo anyone buying a Savage rifle. When you look at a Savage at a gun shop/dealer…have a quality one piece scope mount. A one piece. And lay that mount in position and check to see is the rifle receiver is straight..not warped. Savage has been known to kick out warped receivers though warpage can be slight. But I got a Savage..once…that was badly warped and I didn’t attempted to mount a scope for a few months to receiver since I was using just the receiver. I had taken off the barrel and installed a specialty barrel and oooops!! I sent the receiver back to Savage but!!! I had taken the barrel off. Savage blamed me of bending the receiver.!!! Live and learn!! Moral to this…no matter what rifle anyone buys..make sure that receiver is not warped. 👍
Terminal accent is a fantastic white tail choice, it may be more then you need but so is the 06 your shooting it through . Great bullet for an all purpose medium and big game choice, solid shank makes sure it stays together at close range and the lead core tip makes sure it functions at longer distances.
Great series and great interaction! .30-06 is my favorite caliber (and I own many rifles in various calibers including many rifles in .30-06). I own two of three presented rifles in various versions and vintages - modern Sako 85 Bavarian in .30-06 (left hand) and an early '90s Weatherby Mark V Classicmark in 7 mm Rem Mag (left hand) plus various Winchester and Remington bolt action rifles in .30-06. Across all my .30-06 rifles, the Sako is the best overall - best accuracy, best trigger, best fit-n-finish, best ergo (esp. the top loadable removable magazine). The Model 70 has the smoothest action however. All are great rifles though!
I want to see more of your personal rifles Ron! I grew up shooting a pre 64 model 70 in 270 Winchester. I’ve seen glimpses of your rifles and want to know more about them! Especially the custom rifles. Love the content and sure appreciate what you stand for.
It's possible that if the forend pressure pad is removed from the Weatherby it'll shoot one hole groups because vertical stringing is usually associated with upward forend pressure. Failing that, get a Tikka and it'll shoot 1/4" groups straight out of the box. My T3x Lite Stainless did with cheap Federal Blue Box Ammo.
I have a sako 75 in 3006. Bought it new 26 years ago. Leopold 4.5 to 14. It's sub moa with factory ammo . My first hand load and only hand load, hornady 165 grain interlock soft point and 53 grains of win 760. Shot 5 rounds inside a quarter . Never bothered to make another load. It was perfect. 26 years later and probably a 100 deer, groundhogs, coyotes, it's still inside a quarter. I don't care what anyone says. Sako make the most accurate out of the box rifle period. I have four of them. It's all the same .
Stepping over the 'corn', good series! Entertaining and informative. We didn't have videos when I was a young man, and looking back, it would have been helpful. While I have tried different calibers, I keep going back to the 06. Maybe, had I started with the 7Rem mag, instead of the 30-06, that would be my go to. A suggestion, when you finish this series, how about doing a diagnosis on that Weatherby. Check the scope and mounts, the go to the likley problem, the bedding. I know that you may not want to start sanding on it. But the old business card under the action might be revealing. It's a temp diag technique, but I have a 700, that I used a plastic card in such a way. It shoots so well that I have never taken it a part. It has been that way for over 30 years!
Every single RUclipsr doing ammo testing and gun reviews should be using a Garmin chronograph. They are a game changer. You don't have to worry about miss reads or accidentally shooting it.
First of all Mr. Spomer, i just want to say keep up the good work. Love watching your videos and listen to your podcasts. The 30-06 is one of the big workhorses when it comes to riflecartridges. Just as the 7x57, 8x57is, 6,5x55 swede and the 9,3x62. Its versatile, hard hitting with the right bullet. What you showed here in this video is not making the accuracy justice, but i also understand that you cant sit and try 20-25 different brands of ammo and maybe 4 different loads in every brand. I live in Sweden and my first rifle was a tikka m558 308w Rh, it was a bit of a struggle since i am left handed and with a very dominant left eye, but it made me a very good shot since i always had to make sure: will it kill the animal? Since reloading takes a bit longer when you hold a right handed rifle as a left handed rifle. I later switched to Husqvarna Carl Gustaf model 1900 (think it was called Husqvarna Model 9000 in the Usa) from the late 1970s chambered in 30-06 topped of with a meopta optika 6 2,5-15x44 and a swedish made silencer and i did go the long route, i have tried about 22 different loads of ammo from maybe 12 different brands of ammo. And my conclusion is that my rifle loves 150 grains to 185 grains when it comes to factory loads and when i do my part behind the trigger, i have sub moa groups with Norma Oryx 180 gr at a 100 meters. Gonna see what i can do with 200 grains and maybe 220 grains bullets later on when i get my reloading bench complete. Would love to see you do a similar video on the 6,5x55 Swede like the one you did on the 9,3x62. I also have a 6,5x55 swede, that rifle is also a Husqvarna Carl Gustaf model 1900 left handed. Maybe should include used rifles like 30-50 years old rifles in this type of series too Over and out from Sweden
I’m not going to read your article, you immediately started off by calling the 30-06 a caliber. It’s a cartridge, the caliber is .308 which is shared with many other cartridges.

I absolutely love watching Ron. However, he usually gets less accuracy from rifle. I will see channels like Backfire shoot the same rifles with three times the accuracy.
@@SL-sy8ixnot saying anything about his knowledge. I have been watching Ron forever. I was simply making the statement that several RUclipsrs have had much better accuracy out of the rifles reviewed. I myself have several of the rifles he has shot and easily out shot his groups. One or maybe two rifles could have been a QC issue. However, there is a trend of both rifles and ammunition. Again, Ron is an incredible writer and revered in most firearm/hunting communities. However, I don’t use his accuracy test to dictate how I purchase my firearms. I will continue to use “data trends” and my own experience when I can.

That cold hammer forged barrel on the Sako S20 me likes. Too expensive for me, prefer $1k rifle and $1k scope in walnut. Try the BERGARA MGMICRO LITE BOLT-ACTION RIFLE
Jim from backfire was saying the sako 90 is a shooter but while using the sako ammo that’s loaded for it. Just reminds me of the fact hand loaders can get rifles to shoot really nice groups. I don’t think you could give me a sako and pay me 4k to give up my favorite savage that has been an accurate shooter since I was 12. The savage synthetic stocks definitely leave a lot of room for improvement but my wooden stock is really comfortable in the shoulder
Great series. My first centerfire was and still is a Smith and Wesson branded Howa 1500. Nice walnut stock I've refinished, had the bolt jeweled and a brake and gave to my teenaged son. Bought when I was 14 in 1982. It has an excellent factory trigger and shoots as well as any of these rifles.
yes i learn the lesson I got a tikka shoots really well with hornary match 6,5 creedmore shoots 1/4 inch at 100 meters so i did buy 20 boxes of ammo same lot number be done with work for me I have 4 red stag on my living room .
I bought a Sako 90 Hunter in 300WM and it is such a pleasureable, super accurate and perfectly ergonomic hunting rifle, so I just HAD to go out and get a 90 Peak in the same calibre. This incredible superlight rifle shoots touching cloverleafs with solid copper projectiles, even cheap SST's touch. Yeah, I've got Rem 700's, Mod 70's, have been super disappointed by Weatherby and Browning, and beat the crap out of our Howa paddock cattle ranch rifles (which you cannot fault for the price). Do not denigrate what you don't know, in the case of Sakos, you get superb gratification from what you decide to pay. If you don't know, don't comment.
Hey Ron, on bright sunny days I put an umbrella over my chronograph because like you said, the bullet breaks the light beam. So bright light interferes with picking up the shadow of the bullet. With the chronograph in the shade it will read more accurately.
Curious, some people call " high end " others say middle of the road. Having shot a lot of different rifles myself I have found most rifles paired with the right optics and ammo are usually more accurate than the shooter, especially in hunting conditions
There is a technique to shooting rifles with some recoil vs light cartridges like a 6.5 Creedmoor. Also, the bench makes a big difference in group size, especially with rifles that recoil harder. This is why good benches are made of concrete or blocks. Your bench is definitely a factor. Most 06s are very accurate when shot with the correct technique.
Yeah, I’m a little surprised. He’s not a member at a really good gun club with solid bench rests. Where he can truly show the best of the rifle. You’re absolutely correct the benches is almost everything to get the most out of a rifle.
Ron , Sako pistol grip leaves us Lefties out do they have a left handed model ? Ron , I have a remedy for loading rifles with a pic rail. Hold the cartridge with your thumb against the bottom your four fingers. nails to the top.slide your thumb back as you press down on the cartridge into the magazine. It works for me. Try it a few times to get comfortable with it.
Ron you are absolutly on to something with the .30-06 reamers.... it you cutome ordered a match reamer for the .30-06 you definatley can get better acuracy not to mention powder selection for factory ammo .... with the Sako rifles allot of the guys useing the sako ammo are getting great results
The tolerances of the new cartridges are the same as they have been for decades ( diameter tolerance of +0.002" and length of +0.015"). The 30-06 just uses the old "forcing cone" style of chamber in front of the case. It has a funnel starting at .3106" that tapers at 1°22" per side into the rifling with nothing to help align the bullet with the bore other than the neck of the case. The bullet can be at a slight angle as the rifling is engraved, causing a small wobble as it travels down the barrel. The 30-06 CAN be accurate, but can be a bit picky at to which combination of powder, bullet and seating depth works best. The big difference in the newer cartridges, compared to the 30-06, is the "match style chamber" which has a tube of freebore, typically with a tiny clearance to the bullet (often less than a thousandth of an inch) prior the throat's taper through the rifling. This tight freebore tube aligns the bullet better with the bore to reduce wobble. This type of chamber is not new. Weatherby Magnums since the 1940's have the same thing, even with a tighter fit than most new cartridges ( four tenths of a thousandth of an inch clearance).
@@FranzAntonMesmer These days, there is more than one 6.5x55 chamber, but you are probably asking about the older military one. The older military design often called the 6.5x55 Swedish MAUSER has some cylindrical freebore since it was designed use of a long, 156 grain round-nose bullet. They were loaded with a long section of the full-diameter shank extending out from the front of the case. This is why often you need to load modern bullets well beyond the official COAL to get anywhere near the lands. When cartridges began to be designed around spitzer bullets and their longer ogives, the section of freebore was often shortened or eliminated, as when the 30-03 (220 grain round nose bullet) became the 30-06. This, in fact, was eventually done with the 6.5x55. In the 1980's, as I recall, the European C.I.P. created the "6.5x55 SE" has only a narrow-angle cone and no section of parallel freebore and a higher max chamber pressure. SAAMI adopted this new design in 1993 under the name 6.5x55 Swedish (without the "Mauser"), but kept a lower pressure of 51,000psi using the transducer method. This change causes a lot of confusion, so it is important to know which chamber you have.
@@FranzAntonMesmer Looking into the 7.57 Mauser, it appears that it originally used bullets that had a gently tapered section of ogive prior to the rounded nose. It is similar to a lot of 30-30 RN bullets, if that make sense. In contrast, the original 6.5x55 bullet transitioned more rapidly from the full-diameter shank to the rounded ogive. In other words, there is less of the full-diameter shank sticking out of the case of the early 7x57 load. There is a picture of a loaded 7x57 with a hunting bullet of this shape on the Wikipedia page, if that helps.
Take a look at the Voere Titan II bolt. The Titan II had a similar three front locking lug system to the Sako Model 90. I'm sure that the Titan II influenced the new Sakos. The Titan II was produced in the 70s and 80s
The fact that the grouping issues where all the same on each rifle & shooting the same ammo, tells me that it's recoil control issue. & after rewatching it I noticed that on the 3rd fliers the recoil on the fliers was different, with the muzzle jumping more then the stacked shoots. So, that tells me that there was chamber pressure differences & even a small increase of even 5 can can make it where it's hard to control muzzle jump & twist in the recoil. However I was surprised that the rifle with the muzzle break was having the same issues
The inaccuracies is more than likely the bench that he’s using. It’s wobbling around during the recoil. To properly show a rifles performance a bench should be made of concrete. I’ve noticed over the years watching that when he uses this bench set up. It’s not great accuracy.
Sako is a loverly gun and 3 week s ago tried to get one in the UK there's not one 90 quest in 22 250 in this country and Sako are not supplying or stocking them so I went custom SHAME ON YOU SAKO KEEP THE GREAT CONTENT COMING RON
That weatherby is beautiful, none of the rifles hes tested over the last few days have shot very well... maybe its the scope? Ive never heard of maven scopes but when a $3500 rifle has the same accuracy as a $500 rifle, its either the scope or the shooter IMO.
Have had the same vertical stringing happen so many times with new rifles. Turns out it's because of mismatched harmonics caused by an ill tuned load. Finding your accuracy node with a handload will tighten it right up. I have a tikka varmint barrel in an XRS chassis and it shoots 2-3 moa at 100 with factory Federal blue box; however, with a custom load it shoots 1/8 moa out to 800 yards. These "high tier" rifles were designed with reloaders in mind, just some food for thought.
I call BS, if you do larger sample sizes you will see no difference in dispersion in the tiny powder differences typically recommended for so called “tuning”. Straight up changes powders and or bullets is going to net an actual change and the real benefit to hand loading.
@@jaydunbar7538 I thought the same until I got into reloading, factory ammo is very inconsistent, between 20-100 fps differences between shots (as was demonstrated in this video) which can result in huge group dispersion even at 100 yards. I've tested factory match ammo (hornady eldm in multiple grains) and it still runs relatively poor averages. When you handload you control the powder down to the grain and see velocity averages sub 10fps. At ranges beyond 500 yards this results in fewer variables for dispersion and tightens your groups. Simple matter of fact when it comes down to it.
Wish they made a stainless version of this for a little less $. Love the look of that sako 90 peak but would prefer some grip on that carbon stock and an adjustable cheek piece like the Springfield waypoint offers at that high of a price point. The one negative with sako/tikka is that they are always behind the times it seems.. never offer any of the new cartridges until years later. If they had a stainless version with a legit stock similar to the waypoint I’d buy it hands down. Love the double stack magazines over the tikka mags.
Hey Ron, looks like it's past time to invest into a new chronograph. I suggest the Garmin C1 XERO. This chronograph is awesome. I strongly recommend it so cry once buy once at 600 retail. Single-stage set trigger on the Sako? Do you shove forward on the trigger to set it? I had a Canjar trigger that you pushed forward on the trigger shoe to set it. From 2 lbs to 1 ounce.
You would pass on the Sako because Ron can't get it to shot 😂😂😂 really! I've owned multiple Sako's and Tikka's for the price you can't find anything better!
A couple of guys at the range were shooting a new Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Win. They had the same problem only their groups were horizontal instead of vertical. Weatherby had the same pressure point on the end of the barrel. They called Weatherby about taking the pressure point out making it free floating. Weatherby said they would void the Warranty if the pressure point is taken out. Seems odd Weatherby would tell them this although I do not doubt what they were saying. Weatherby guarantees these rifles to be 1 MOA or better with quality factory ammo. Doesn't appear they will do that?
I think all rifles reach their real accuracy potential with handload development. That said, I have a T3 Lite that eats anything made by Federal and because it does, load development for it hasn't been as much of a priority as it has been for my other rifles.
I have a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 280AI. It seems to be picky when it comes to bullets. I couldn't get it to group any better than 2 1/2" with Nostler 140gn ETips. But the 160gn Accubonds shoot well under 3/4". I spoke with a gunsmith and he said about 25% of the Christensen rifles don't shoot well. It may be that the shooters haven't found a good load for their particular rifle. But given the cost, it should shoot more ammunition accurately.

Good work. Despite what you see on youtube its unrealistic to expect 1/2” groups with every factory rifle/ammo combo. I’d happily take all those rifles hunting 👍
Christensen Arms has a sub MOA guarantee. I have to suspect either the scope or mounts or both especially with the inconsistency and lack of any groups from the second and third shots.
Mounts or the mounting in general, doing it in a batch the mounting process may not have gotten the attention it requires. Not that it’s a guarantee, but it’s the cheapest and easiest thing to check and it’s a very easy thing to mess up with good old complacency.

All the chronographs that use light sensors will have issues when used in sunny conditions. On a cloudy day they work fine. The new radar types don't rely on light at all. They work almost 100 percent of the time. Light isn't a factor at all.
The Sako website states this rifle is a pound lighter than you suggest, did you weigh this rifle or is this an honest mistake? Keep up the great work, cheers
I have the same chronograph. ProChronoDigital 2 sky sensors need cleaning once in a while with a q-tip and alcohol. If you knocked it over, it might have gotten the sensors dirty... They also sometimes need lights on the sky screens, or remove the sky screens altogether and use it without. Might change the battery too since they eat 9 v batteries... OR,... Buy a Garmin x or a lab radar. Really, they're not that expensive and a necessity for a hand loader. I have the pro chrono digital and a magneto speed (which would've been a real hassle for testing multiple rifles) and a Garmin x. The Garmin is by far the easiest to use.
I agree. They've all figured it out I think. For a little less money the Mossberg and Ruger shoot well enough too. I wouldn't buy one ordinarily but I bought some Ruger Americans and older TC compass in 243 to lend to New Student Hunters during my classes. Most all the students, which never shot a rifle before, where able to shoot 1 1/4" or less (2 shot 3/4") with the rifles using factory ammunition, a picnic table, cheap bushnell banner scopes, and rice bags. I was really surprised when they were doing it. Of course without prior experience they didn't fully appreciate it.
Savage rifles normally shoot well, but everything else about the rifles leave a lot to be desired. Rough actions, terrible extractors cheap plastic components.

When he said the Sako had a "single set trigger",I assume it is an actual set trigger--when set, perhaps by pushing forward--- the pull becomes much lighter Otherwise it makes no sense.
I think he just misspoke. They do make Sakos with single set triggers, but I didn’t see him push the trigger forward once when he was shooting the Sako. Years ago I bought a Heym rifle in 7 mm Remington Magnum with a single set trigger. It’s a thing of beauty. I believe the inaccuracies that they’re showing is due to the bench. For the bench to truly show off a gun performance needs to be built of concrete or cement block with a concrete top. I’m surprised that he’s not a member at a gun club with good benches.
wen i was shopping for bolt action i went to my fav lgs and walked to the racks of used bolt guns and the first one i looked at was a old win mod 70 in 300h&hmag and wen i flipped the tag over i was shocked! i was over my budget by about a thousand dollars lol. right next to it was a very similar looking rifle that i picked up and was inspecting and wen i looked at the tag it said Remington mod 1917 sporter 30-06 with weaver k4 199$ so i took it to the counter to buy it and wen i was waiting for the ibc to go threw the shop owner was looking it over and said wow its not a hack job sporter at all, its a action up custom rifle built on a surp action probably some time around the mid 30s going by the parts used and the work done, then pointed out that it also had a custom reticle in the k4 and told me that having that kind of work today would cost a small fortune!. it has a 26in med heavy barrel and a nice figured walnut stock. it weighs 12 pounds! and it shoots tiny groups! i scored big time on this one! and recoil is tame enuf to shoot warm 220grn loads all day with no discomfort at all and the 150grn are loud but recoil is on par with my ar shooting green tips.
My chronograph works much better on an overcast day. It allows better background contrast to 'see' the bullet passing over. It is always less reliable on sunny days.
Might need to bring out a 308 rifle 😂, and the garmin is awesome, got one 6 months ago and it hasn’t missed a shot, I should start charging my buddy’s because they use it quite a bit as well haha

Is it wrong I drive 2-3 miles away from my camp/job every night to get reception for these shows? Good stuff.
On the Weatherby,the tight spot you found when checking the free floating, it may be the front sling stud my protrude up above the stock enough to effect accuracy. I had a Remington 788 in 22-250 that had this issue. Itthrew shots all over. Once i shortened the stud so it cleared the barrel it shot very well. Sub 1/2 minute out to 500 yards or so.

Just purchased a Sako Hunter in 30-06, Talley Mounts and Nightforce SHV 3-10X. What an awesome rifle shoots various factory loads to 1 moa……. Highest Recommendation!
Well..uh..my old Savage 111 flat top in 30-06 set in a Boyd’s laminate stock and epoxy bedded sporting a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3x10x50mm..EGW HD mounts and rings will hold slightly better than that..cold barrel..everytime everyday.
I’ve spent around $1,000 total for this rifle.

Sako makes a great gun by all accounts.
60+ years collecting reloading and hunting and Sako is my favorite to hunt with out of hundreds of guns or the years. Love their older models and have several of their newer models as well and they all shoot great with almost any factory load and with reloads they shoot better then a lot of my custom builds do🙌
Minimal work on Savage rifles to achieve really repeatable accuracy. Sometimes nothing but too with quality mounts/rings snd a decent scope. I do not run complicated scopes as a rule.
Big game hunting rifles do not need huge complicated dial in optics. And I’ve taken a lot of game in my life. Just decent proven optics not cheap scopes.
I will say yo anyone buying a Savage rifle. When you look at a Savage at a gun shop/dealer…have a quality one piece scope mount. A one piece. And lay that mount in position and check to see is the rifle receiver is straight..not warped. Savage has been known to kick out warped receivers though warpage can be slight. But I got a Savage..once…that was badly warped and I didn’t attempted to mount a scope for a few months to receiver since I was using just the receiver.
I had taken off the barrel and installed a specialty barrel and oooops!! I sent the receiver back to Savage but!!! I had taken the barrel off. Savage blamed me of bending the receiver.!!! Live and learn!!
Moral to this…no matter what rifle anyone buys..make sure that receiver is not warped.

Terminal accent is a fantastic white tail choice, it may be more then you need but so is the 06 your shooting it through . Great bullet for an all purpose medium and big game choice, solid shank makes sure it stays together at close range and the lead core tip makes sure it functions at longer distances.

I own two of three presented rifles in various versions and vintages - modern Sako 85 Bavarian in .30-06 (left hand) and an early '90s Weatherby Mark V Classicmark in 7 mm Rem Mag (left hand) plus various Winchester and Remington bolt action rifles in .30-06. Across all my .30-06 rifles, the Sako is the best overall - best accuracy, best trigger, best fit-n-finish, best ergo (esp. the top loadable removable magazine). The Model 70 has the smoothest action however. All are great rifles though!

It's possible that if the forend pressure pad is removed from the Weatherby it'll shoot one hole groups because vertical stringing is usually associated with upward forend pressure. Failing that, get a Tikka and it'll shoot 1/4" groups straight out of the box. My T3x Lite Stainless did with cheap Federal Blue Box Ammo.
I have a sako 75 in 3006. Bought it new 26 years ago. Leopold 4.5 to 14. It's sub moa with factory ammo . My first hand load and only hand load, hornady 165 grain interlock soft point and 53 grains of win 760. Shot 5 rounds inside a quarter . Never bothered to make another load. It was perfect. 26 years later and probably a 100 deer, groundhogs, coyotes, it's still inside a quarter.
I don't care what anyone says. Sako make the most accurate out of the box rifle period. I have four of them. It's all the same .
Stepping over the 'corn', good series! Entertaining and informative. We didn't have videos when I was a young man, and looking back, it would have been helpful. While I have tried different calibers, I keep going back to the 06. Maybe, had I started with the 7Rem mag, instead of the 30-06, that would be my go to. A suggestion, when you finish this series, how about doing a diagnosis on that Weatherby. Check the scope and mounts, the go to the likley problem, the bedding. I know that you may not want to start sanding on it. But the old business card under the action might be revealing. It's a temp diag technique, but I have a 700, that I used a plastic card in such a way. It shoots so well that I have never taken it a part. It has been that way for over 30 years!
Every single RUclipsr doing ammo testing and gun reviews should be using a Garmin chronograph. They are a game changer. You don't have to worry about miss reads or accidentally shooting it.
First of all Mr. Spomer, i just want to say keep up the good work. Love watching your videos and listen to your podcasts. The 30-06 is one of the big workhorses when it comes to riflecartridges. Just as the 7x57, 8x57is, 6,5x55 swede and the 9,3x62. Its versatile, hard hitting with the right bullet. What you showed here in this video is not making the accuracy justice, but i also understand that you cant sit and try 20-25 different brands of ammo and maybe 4 different loads in every brand.
I live in Sweden and my first rifle was a tikka m558 308w Rh, it was a bit of a struggle since i am left handed and with a very dominant left eye, but it made me a very good shot since i always had to make sure: will it kill the animal? Since reloading takes a bit longer when you hold a right handed rifle as a left handed rifle. I later switched to Husqvarna Carl Gustaf model 1900 (think it was called Husqvarna Model 9000 in the Usa) from the late 1970s chambered in 30-06 topped of with a meopta optika 6 2,5-15x44 and a swedish made silencer and i did go the long route, i have tried about 22 different loads of ammo from maybe 12 different brands of ammo. And my conclusion is that my rifle loves 150 grains to 185 grains when it comes to factory loads and when i do my part behind the trigger, i have sub moa groups with Norma Oryx 180 gr at a 100 meters. Gonna see what i can do with 200 grains and maybe 220 grains bullets later on when i get my reloading bench complete.
Would love to see you do a similar video on the 6,5x55 Swede like the one you did on the 9,3x62.
I also have a 6,5x55 swede, that rifle is also a Husqvarna Carl Gustaf model 1900 left handed.
Maybe should include used rifles like 30-50 years old rifles in this type of series too

I’m not going to read your article, you immediately started off by calling the 30-06 a caliber. It’s a cartridge, the caliber is .308 which is shared with many other cartridges.

I myself have several of the rifles he has shot and easily out shot his groups. One or maybe two rifles could have been a QC issue. However, there is a trend of both rifles and ammunition.
Again, Ron is an incredible writer and revered in most firearm/hunting communities. However, I don’t use his accuracy test to dictate how I purchase my firearms. I will continue to use “data trends” and my own experience when I can.

Jim from backfire was saying the sako 90 is a shooter but while using the sako ammo that’s loaded for it. Just reminds me of the fact hand loaders can get rifles to shoot really nice groups. I don’t think you could give me a sako and pay me 4k to give up my favorite savage that has been an accurate shooter since I was 12. The savage synthetic stocks definitely leave a lot of room for improvement but my wooden stock is really comfortable in the shoulder
Great series. My first centerfire was and still is a Smith and Wesson branded Howa 1500. Nice walnut stock I've refinished, had the bolt jeweled and a brake and gave to my teenaged son. Bought when I was 14 in 1982. It has an excellent factory trigger and shoots as well as any of these rifles.
yes i learn the lesson I got a tikka shoots really well with hornary match 6,5 creedmore shoots 1/4 inch at 100 meters so i did buy 20 boxes of ammo same lot number be done with work for me I have 4 red stag on my living room .

I bought a Sako 90 Hunter in 300WM and it is such a pleasureable, super accurate and perfectly ergonomic hunting rifle, so I just HAD to go out and get a 90 Peak in the same calibre. This incredible superlight rifle shoots touching cloverleafs with solid copper projectiles, even cheap SST's touch. Yeah, I've got Rem 700's, Mod 70's, have been super disappointed by Weatherby and Browning, and beat the crap out of our Howa paddock cattle ranch rifles (which you cannot fault for the price). Do not denigrate what you don't know, in the case of Sakos, you get superb gratification from what you decide to pay. If you don't know, don't comment.
Hey Ron, on bright sunny days I put an umbrella over my chronograph because like you said, the bullet breaks the light beam. So bright light interferes with picking up the shadow of the bullet. With the chronograph in the shade it will read more accurately.
Curious, some people call " high end " others say middle of the road. Having shot a lot of different rifles myself I have found most rifles paired with the right optics and ammo are usually more accurate than the shooter, especially in hunting conditions

There is a technique to shooting rifles with some recoil vs light cartridges like a 6.5 Creedmoor. Also, the bench makes a big difference in group size, especially with rifles that recoil harder. This is why good benches are made of concrete or blocks. Your bench is definitely a factor. Most 06s are very accurate when shot with the correct technique.
Yeah, I’m a little surprised. He’s not a member at a really good gun club with solid bench rests. Where he can truly show the best of the rifle. You’re absolutely correct the benches is almost everything to get the most out of a rifle.

I own a Christensen Arms FFT in 30-06, and she's a shooter. Sub moa at 100 with Barnes TTSX 168 grain factory ammo all day long.
I really like the 1913 rails machined into the receiver on that Sako, I'd like to see that on more brands.
Ron , Sako pistol grip leaves us Lefties out do they have a left handed model ? Ron , I have a remedy for loading rifles with a pic rail. Hold the cartridge with your thumb against the bottom your four fingers. nails to the top.slide your thumb back as you press down on the cartridge into the magazine. It works for me. Try it a few times to get comfortable with it.
Mason leather got real good velocity, accuracy and expansion with the federal fusion,and power shock...
Ron you are absolutly on to something with the .30-06 reamers.... it you cutome ordered a match reamer for the .30-06 you definatley can get better acuracy not to mention powder selection for factory ammo .... with the Sako rifles allot of the guys useing the sako ammo are getting great results

The tolerances of the new cartridges are the same as they have been for decades ( diameter tolerance of +0.002" and length of +0.015"). The 30-06 just uses the old "forcing cone" style of chamber in front of the case. It has a funnel starting at .3106" that tapers at 1°22" per side into the rifling with nothing to help align the bullet with the bore other than the neck of the case. The bullet can be at a slight angle as the rifling is engraved, causing a small wobble as it travels down the barrel. The 30-06 CAN be accurate, but can be a bit picky at to which combination of powder, bullet and seating depth works best.
The big difference in the newer cartridges, compared to the 30-06, is the "match style chamber" which has a tube of freebore, typically with a tiny clearance to the bullet (often less than a thousandth of an inch) prior the throat's taper through the rifling. This tight freebore tube aligns the bullet better with the bore to reduce wobble. This type of chamber is not new. Weatherby Magnums since the 1940's have the same thing, even with a tighter fit than most new cartridges ( four tenths of a thousandth of an inch clearance).
@@FranzAntonMesmer These days, there is more than one 6.5x55 chamber, but you are probably asking about the older military one. The older military design often called the 6.5x55 Swedish MAUSER has some cylindrical freebore since it was designed use of a long, 156 grain round-nose bullet. They were loaded with a long section of the full-diameter shank extending out from the front of the case. This is why often you need to load modern bullets well beyond the official COAL to get anywhere near the lands.
When cartridges began to be designed around spitzer bullets and their longer ogives, the section of freebore was often shortened or eliminated, as when the 30-03 (220 grain round nose bullet) became the 30-06. This, in fact, was eventually done with the 6.5x55. In the 1980's, as I recall, the European C.I.P. created the "6.5x55 SE" has only a narrow-angle cone and no section of parallel freebore and a higher max chamber pressure. SAAMI adopted this new design in 1993 under the name 6.5x55 Swedish (without the "Mauser"), but kept a lower pressure of 51,000psi using the transducer method.
This change causes a lot of confusion, so it is important to know which chamber you have.
@@FranzAntonMesmer Looking into the 7.57 Mauser, it appears that it originally used bullets that had a gently tapered section of ogive prior to the rounded nose. It is similar to a lot of 30-30 RN bullets, if that make sense. In contrast, the original 6.5x55 bullet transitioned more rapidly from the full-diameter shank to the rounded ogive. In other words, there is less of the full-diameter shank sticking out of the case of the early 7x57 load. There is a picture of a loaded 7x57 with a hunting bullet of this shape on the Wikipedia page, if that helps.
Take a look at the Voere Titan II bolt. The Titan II had a similar three front locking lug system to the Sako Model 90. I'm sure that the Titan II influenced the new Sakos. The Titan II was produced in the 70s and 80s
The fact that the grouping issues where all the same on each rifle & shooting the same ammo, tells me that it's recoil control issue. & after rewatching it I noticed that on the 3rd fliers the recoil on the fliers was different, with the muzzle jumping more then the stacked shoots. So, that tells me that there was chamber pressure differences & even a small increase of even 5 can can make it where it's hard to control muzzle jump & twist in the recoil.
However I was surprised that the rifle with the muzzle break was having the same issues
The inaccuracies is more than likely the bench that he’s using. It’s wobbling around during the recoil. To properly show a rifles performance a bench should be made of concrete. I’ve noticed over the years watching that when he uses this bench set up. It’s not great accuracy.
Sako is a loverly gun and 3 week s ago tried to get one in the UK there's not one 90 quest in 22 250 in this country and Sako are not supplying or stocking them so I went custom SHAME ON YOU SAKO KEEP THE GREAT CONTENT COMING RON
That weatherby is beautiful, none of the rifles hes tested over the last few days have shot very well... maybe its the scope? Ive never heard of maven scopes but when a $3500 rifle has the same accuracy as a $500 rifle, its either the scope or the shooter IMO.

Try blue box federal 150 soft points,they shoot very accurately in all calibers tried. Its the cheapest ammo they make. Yet it is super accurate.
Do both the Christensen Arms and the Weatherby drop the empty back on top of the next round? I saw Ron having to dig in to take out the empty.

Ill stick with my Sako Finnbear 7mm and Sako TX3 with a Zeiss 6-24 that are incredibly accurate with my reloads.
Have had the same vertical stringing happen so many times with new rifles. Turns out it's because of mismatched harmonics caused by an ill tuned load. Finding your accuracy node with a handload will tighten it right up.
I have a tikka varmint barrel in an XRS chassis and it shoots 2-3 moa at 100 with factory Federal blue box; however, with a custom load it shoots 1/8 moa out to 800 yards. These "high tier" rifles were designed with reloaders in mind, just some food for thought.
I call BS, if you do larger sample sizes you will see no difference in dispersion in the tiny powder differences typically recommended for so called “tuning”. Straight up changes powders and or bullets is going to net an actual change and the real benefit to hand loading.
@@jaydunbar7538 I thought the same until I got into reloading, factory ammo is very inconsistent, between 20-100 fps differences between shots (as was demonstrated in this video) which can result in huge group dispersion even at 100 yards. I've tested factory match ammo (hornady eldm in multiple grains) and it still runs relatively poor averages. When you handload you control the powder down to the grain and see velocity averages sub 10fps. At ranges beyond 500 yards this results in fewer variables for dispersion and tightens your groups. Simple matter of fact when it comes down to it.

Wish they made a stainless version of this for a little less $. Love the look of that sako 90 peak but would prefer some grip on that carbon stock and an adjustable cheek piece like the Springfield waypoint offers at that high of a price point. The one negative with sako/tikka is that they are always behind the times it seems.. never offer any of the new cartridges until years later. If they had a stainless version with a legit stock similar to the waypoint I’d buy it hands down. Love the double stack magazines over the tikka mags.

Single-stage set trigger on the Sako? Do you shove forward on the trigger to set it? I had a Canjar trigger that you pushed forward on the trigger shoe to set it. From 2 lbs to 1 ounce.

A couple of guys at the range were shooting a new Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Win. They had the same problem only their groups were horizontal instead of vertical. Weatherby had the same pressure point on the end of the barrel. They called Weatherby about taking the pressure point out making it free floating. Weatherby said they would void the Warranty if the pressure point is taken out. Seems odd Weatherby would tell them this although I do not doubt what they were saying. Weatherby guarantees these rifles to be 1 MOA or better with quality factory ammo. Doesn't appear they will do that?
I think all rifles reach their real accuracy potential with handload development. That said, I have a T3 Lite that eats anything made by Federal and because it does, load development for it hasn't been as much of a priority as it has been for my other rifles.
I have a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 280AI. It seems to be picky when it comes to bullets. I couldn't get it to group any better than 2 1/2" with Nostler 140gn ETips. But the 160gn Accubonds shoot well under 3/4". I spoke with a gunsmith and he said about 25% of the Christensen rifles don't shoot well. It may be that the shooters haven't found a good load for their particular rifle. But given the cost, it should shoot more ammunition accurately.

Christensen Arms has a sub MOA guarantee. I have to suspect either the scope or mounts or both especially with the inconsistency and lack of any groups from the second and third shots.
Mounts or the mounting in general, doing it in a batch the mounting process may not have gotten the attention it requires. Not that it’s a guarantee, but it’s the cheapest and easiest thing to check and it’s a very easy thing to mess up with good old complacency.
I have seen 3 of these 30/06 videos & all have two rounds together & a flyer. I cannot be the rifles.

All the chronographs that use light sensors will have issues when used in sunny conditions. On a cloudy day they work fine. The new radar types don't rely on light at all. They work almost 100 percent of the time. Light isn't a factor at all.
The Sako website states this rifle is a pound lighter than you suggest, did you weigh this rifle or is this an honest mistake? Keep up the great work, cheers

I have the same chronograph. ProChronoDigital 2 sky sensors need cleaning once in a while with a q-tip and alcohol. If you knocked it over, it might have gotten the sensors dirty... They also sometimes need lights on the sky screens, or remove the sky screens altogether and use it without. Might change the battery too since they eat 9 v batteries...
OR,... Buy a Garmin x or a lab radar. Really, they're not that expensive and a necessity for a hand loader. I have the pro chrono digital and a magneto speed (which would've been a real hassle for testing multiple rifles) and a Garmin x. The Garmin is by far the easiest to use.

I agree. They've all figured it out I think. For a little less money the Mossberg and Ruger shoot well enough too. I wouldn't buy one ordinarily but I bought some Ruger Americans and older TC compass in 243 to lend to New Student Hunters during my classes. Most all the students, which never shot a rifle before, where able to shoot 1 1/4" or less (2 shot 3/4") with the rifles using factory ammunition, a picnic table, cheap bushnell banner scopes, and rice bags. I was really surprised when they were doing it. Of course without prior experience they didn't fully appreciate it.
Savage rifles normally shoot well, but everything else about the rifles leave a lot to be desired. Rough actions, terrible extractors cheap plastic components.

When he said the Sako had a "single set trigger",I assume it is an actual set trigger--when set, perhaps by pushing forward--- the pull becomes much lighter Otherwise it makes no sense.
I think he just misspoke. They do make Sakos with single set triggers, but I didn’t see him push the trigger forward once when he was shooting the Sako. Years ago I bought a Heym rifle in 7 mm Remington Magnum with a single set trigger. It’s a thing of beauty. I believe the inaccuracies that they’re showing is due to the bench. For the bench to truly show off a gun performance needs to be built of concrete or cement block with a concrete top. I’m surprised that he’s not a member at a gun club with good benches.
wen i was shopping for bolt action i went to my fav lgs and walked to the racks of used bolt guns and the first one i looked at was a old win mod 70 in 300h&hmag and wen i flipped the tag over i was shocked! i was over my budget by about a thousand dollars lol. right next to it was a very similar looking rifle that i picked up and was inspecting and wen i looked at the tag it said Remington mod 1917 sporter 30-06 with weaver k4 199$ so i took it to the counter to buy it and wen i was waiting for the ibc to go threw the shop owner was looking it over and said wow its not a hack job sporter at all, its a action up custom rifle built on a surp action probably some time around the mid 30s going by the parts used and the work done, then pointed out that it also had a custom reticle in the k4 and told me that having that kind of work today would cost a small fortune!. it has a 26in med heavy barrel and a nice figured walnut stock. it weighs 12 pounds! and it shoots tiny groups! i scored big time on this one! and recoil is tame enuf to shoot warm 220grn loads all day with no discomfort at all and the 150grn are loud but recoil is on par with my ar shooting green tips.
The price really sako..ed me in the pocket book..😂
It made be the scope , commen for those tree rifles is the scope , try to lock your rifle , an dry fire it , see if the crosshair is moving
My chronograph works much better on an overcast day. It allows better background contrast to 'see' the bullet passing over. It is always less reliable on sunny days.
Might need to bring out a 308 rifle 😂, and the garmin is awesome, got one 6 months ago and it hasn’t missed a shot, I should start charging my buddy’s because they use it quite a bit as well haha
Just got a brand new weatherby in .243w most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned put my browning A-bolt to shame
