We did this for a female cat in our neighborhood. She had liter after liter. When we brought her back she sat in the street crying, she could not understand how to relax and that all the males were not chasing her. We went and sat with her for hours and finally got her on my porch at 3am. It took 9 days for her to stopped and finally relax. She is now 17.
I have a former TNR cat. She was very skittish and afraid of people. She was returned because they said she was too feral & unadoptable. Very slowly, she acclimated to us & our dogs (Shih Tzu) since we always took them with us when we fed her & another feral cat. The other cat kept evicting her from the boxes we put down. So she was always hunkering on a low branch of a bush. At one point in February 2016, the temperature was going down below zero so we brought down my male dog's crate (she really liked him & would lay her head on his thigh when we would sit on the bench), put food in front of the door. As she ate, I pushed the plate further in until she was in & I was able to close the door. We brought her upstairs & planned to return her to the courtyard after the winter. When she heard the snowblower & shovels scraping she would run as far from the window as possible. She was terrified of thunder. We knew then that she had been living in fear outside & decided to keep her since she got along with our dogs. It's been 5 years & she's been the best cat ever!!!
Thank you for the wonderful work your rescue does! When I am able, I would love to be able to do the same thing in my area. :) I adore kitties so much and would love nothing more than to see fewer feral and homeless cats across the world.
What fills me with joy is to see the woman's (who's releasing the cat's back to their colony) smile. Her expression says it all -and says it for me too!
This is exactly what needs to be done with dogs, also. So many stray dogs suffer cruelty at the hands of humans. There are very few places that help them but even with that it's always going to be an endless cycle unless this is done to control their population growth.
I’m from a small town in Indiana and we have a crazy high feral cat population. There is a group of us who TNR and actively work to bring more people on board. It’s a big job but so rewarding!
Saving feral cats is possible with a lot of patience, love and understanding, my two little treasures were totally feral and an association gave them to me when I was a foster home because I'm disabled so I'm all the time at home and able to work with them. It took 2y for the male to transform into a big baby who loves to cuddle and 5y for the female but since 7 months now she loves mommy's arms and love the attention and affection, her fears disappeared 😊 Their traumas still create some problems like nightmares, PICA, anxiety markings or anxiety crisis but nothing like it used to be and they feel better at each passing day. If you have the patience and the material means to do it, please, help taming feral cats guys.
It's unlikely that he's like that on a regular basis, if it makes you feel any better. When TNR programs trap cats, they ask that colony caretakers withhold food for a day or two, so that the cats are hungry enough to enter the trap.
Thank you for doing what was right and not letting mama have any more kittens! I know it’s such a huge debate and I also know for every Litter born animals are killed at the shelters!!
I kept the mama cat I captured, mostly because she had a broken back leg... she worked very hard to become socialized and is now an amazing member of the family
I find it useful that once taken care of it is worthwhile for a week or 2 to get these feral cats more or less tame before release. At least used to a human touch. Yes, it is much work to accomplish this. But makes life outside easier for the cat and you. Besides, we have had some we released and "handable" that others have decided on adopting, simply because they weren't so afraid of humans.
My two Tom's were born to feral mothers in big colonies. When I went to pick up the kittens I brought 4 traps and talked to a clinic that agreed to Tuesdays for very low cost spay and neuter and rabies shots then he and I took 8 cats to the clinic. That got it started for him. He had well over 100 cats between two colonies. It has taken him 2 years but I believe they are all sterilized now. Also all kittens have homes the rest will live out their lives on familiar ground he can care for them and let them dwindle down. It's sad but much better.

You should do a video about kitty abortions. I know it's kinda taboo, but I think a respected rescue explaining why kitty abortions are done, especially in a TNR situation, could put some folks at east about doing TNR on a pregnant cat.
I think you need to let people know that you release them after they recovered for two or three days and that people should find out first what's going on with the cats there like if any of them already have litters that they're going to be leaving behind if you trap them.
I live in Brooklyn NY and I have a family of cats in my yard and I CAN NOT get anyone to help me fix these cats. I feed them but each season they come back with more kittens. I NEED HELP!!!!

Agreed. People dont like euthanizing healthy cats which I can understand, but euthanasia is a painless alternative to what cats experience on the streets. We shouldnt treat cats differently from any other invasive species. Stray cats should be euthanaized so they dont suffer slow painful deaths on the streets from disease, poison, cars, predators, people, etc. Euthanasia will also prevent the spread of disease like toxoplasmosis and prevent cats from hunting endangered wildlife (which they've already contributed to the extinction of 63 bird species). People who support TNR say that it's more effective because removing cats compretely results in the vacuum effect. Cats who are pregnant at the time of sterilization have the kittens aborted. There's not enough time and resources to bring more animals into the world.
The decision probably depends on many factors, including available foster homes and how feral the mother is. During high kitten season, there is no capacity for a fully feral mom with kittens or just the bottle babies without mom. At that point, it becomes a similar moral discussion as with human abortions, I guess.
I rescued a litter of 4, can't afford to get them spayed or neutered since I'm homeless... is there anywhere I can take them to get it done for free? if I just get my 1 female spayed, i can keep keep eye on her brothers so they aren't as big if a problem as getting her spayed (watch my shorts if you wanna see them)
Males are generally released the next morning or day and females can be kept sometimes an extra day. But you cannot keep them very long at all because they will become stressed and they could possibly die.
