I think that would make for a interesting short story. The man defects to what he thought was Eurasia, but the French are trying to tell him there is no Eurasia, even showing them a map of the world, seeing Oceania is just the one British island he lived on, and over the course of the story he begins to slowly realize how deep Oceanias propaganda went.

This is actually a really intresting scenario, just the idea itself about 1984. They say that they're this massive Empire that supposedly owns all of North and South America and Australia but the whole thing only takes place in Britain, we don't know the world outside of Britain and it never really shows us. The Government in the book however can make the people believe almost anything it wants.
This is really making me think.

Julia didn't believe the war was real, and Goldstein's book itself stated the possibility that the whole war was false but that it was immaterial to the programme of control the Party had established. A dictatorship such as that of the Party would be far easier to manage in one wholly self-contained island from which the rest of the world could be shut out rather than a sprawling global empire, particularly if there is no central government as such but rather a system pinned to the ideological dominion of Ingsoc to which all members of the Party are inculcated, in much the same manner as the medieval Catholic Church; with administrative control split between various zones of Airstrip One and the ministries, as with the rulership of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia during the 1970s. The "war" could easily be the result of infighting between the zonal administrators each attempting to bring about the victory of their "pure" form of Ingsoc, as was the case in Cambodia. Meanwhile, it is in the interest of the Party as a whole regardless of any interfactional rivalries there may be to maintain the fiction of a global war and a large cohesive empire under the semi-divine rulership of Big Brother, the reign of ideological absolutism and police terror over the populace and Party membership, and the propaganda of endless fulfillments of production quotas that themselves are likely pure invention.
If Oceania is nothing but the self-contained island of Britain which has effectively shut itself off from the outside world, then any perversion of reality can be practised within and the population would know nothing about it. If an atomic war had actually occurred in 1950, using the relatively small arsenals of low-grade fission weapons then available, it is possible that Britain was one of the few surviving areas of organised civilisation left in a damaged world lacking in global communication and trade, which would mean that effectively there is no outside world any longer, at least not in the form it had existed at prior to the dropping of the Bombs, and the Party can claim anything it damn well pleases.

Imagine being Winston or Julia at this point. For the first time in your life, you're seeing bombers and troops completely alien to you. Flags from nations that never existed, but, do? These troops, they aren't speaking Newspeak, they're speaking Old Speak. They say things, express concepts that you have always felt but never could put into words. The Party, IngSoc, a thing which is everything, all you ever knew, that could tell you the sky was red and you would believe it, is gone, being ground to dust by some... Thing called "NATO". Airstrip 1 was "Great Britain". The party was always truthful and loving, it told you everything, but... It was all wrong, were they lying, or was this another ploy by the party? If reality wasn't what the party said, what was it?
It would be an absolute existential crisis for every last Oceanian. The fact that things can be objectively true no matter what might lead to mass suicides and the breakdown of their entire worldview. This new "United Kingdom" that is the government now is strange and alien to the people of former Oceania. I think it would take years for it to finally set into people like Wilson and Julia that "yes, this is the world, and The Party was wrong". The news that the brotherhood was never real might be more of a shock than anything else, really.

Pol Pot, curiously enough, even compared to an American president, was shy to the point he could tolerate no cult of his personality. He also lived in a house organized exactly like a buddhist temple (no furniture besides floor mats to sleep and sit) minus the religion. More and more researchers are now coming to the conclusion that he governed absolutely nothing and that the killings were done by the same American-trained thugs who had started them under the American occupation. Many Cambodians remember the Khmer Rouge proper as the less corrupt rulers they had but that they never had the real power and that the deaths were due to attacks of pro-US forest bandits.

Shit, wait, this scenario makes a lot of sense. Most people list Oceania as owning the Americas, the British Isles, South Africa and the continent of Oceania. But even though Orwell's quote sourcing that apparently comes from a separate book.. imagine if it was also simply derived from the Ministry of Truth. Nothing like lying about territory acquisition to people totally cut off from all outside communication to convince them that they are very powerful, and war will go well, but they still need them to fight for them, and that since there is no other uprising anywhere else there is no hope. It is unlikely it controls that much area anyway, 100% totalitarian control over that much land would need a lot of policing, which would take a LOT of completely brainwashed citizens to do (which would need a location to continually be brainwashed in, as if left alone long enough they will start to doubt) and especially for rural areas that simply is not feasible. Very hard to keep people in-line when they don't have the constant threat like population centres do.

Except in this case, NATO had all the resources, air and naval superiority it could ever want to sustain an invasion of Britain, since if Oceania even had a navy to speak of, we never heard about it in the books. The reason nobody has been able to successfully invade Britain since William the Conqueror is because of Britain's gigantic fucking navy that they used to deter any kind of invasion of the Home Islands whatsoever. Meanwhile here, we have absolutely no idea what the naval capabilities of Oceania are, and if this video's theory is right, that Oceania is just basically a hermit kingdom in the British Isles fighting an endless war against Irish nationalists, then their capabilities as a naval power are probably shit. NATO, on the other hand, with the US leading it, has probably the single largest navy in the world, and would be easily capable of annihilating whatever meager naval forces the Oceanians can muster, and most likely could support a naval invasion of the British Isles. Would it be easy? Definitely not. Even in real life, the D-Day landings were a practical miracle, what with logistical issues and poor weather. And that included naval and air superiority and 4 years of naval experience against the Japanese. But it IS possible. So, yeah.

This is actually very well made and thought through. A few things I would’ve changed would be where Oceania goes to war with the USA and NATO in 1984, hence the name. As the resources of the Irish Free Army would be drastically depleted and the state itself could possibly dissolve, the Ingsoc Party would look elsewhere to kickstart another campaign. I believe Oceania would think that attacking the USA and Canada would be their best option, rather than invading closer neighbors such as France that could easily result in their ultimate defeat. The Ministry of Truth would order the rewriting of history in a mass propaganda campaign, replacing Eurasia and Eastasia with America and NATO (or adding them into the mix). Overall, very good video.

The Oceanians aren’t trying to crush them completely. Not to mention, NATO would also probably be supplying the Irish with weapons, ammunitions, and other supplies prior to the direct intervention, most likely to keep a foothold and to one day attempt liberation of the British Isles completely. Basically somewhat of an Ukraine situation, and then escalating to somewhat of another Vietnam.

There is a part of the interrogation in which Winston tries to demonstrate to O'Brien that the party cannot control everything by telling him that they have not been able to destroy Eurasia and East Asia, to which O'Brien responds that if they haven't already conquered them it's because they don't want to. He asked me if he knew that Eurasia and East Asia don't really exist and Oceania is just Britain, and what he says is just an excuse to keep breaking Winston. Or maybe O'Brien really believes that Oceania is a great empire and that its two enemies exist.
Perhaps the military's top brass uses doublethink to believe they are sending troops to India when in reality they are sending them to Ireland or other areas of the United Kingdom.
If that is true, I would honestly stop seeing Oceania as a terrifying government and start seeing them as a pathetic group of crazy people on an island who believe they dominate the entire world.
Although something that does not add up is that in another scene you can see how several Eurasian prisoners of war are executed in the street, some of them have Caucasian features, but others have Asian features, which makes me wonder where they got those Asian prisoners from.
I'm also curious to think what the reaction of the inhabitants of Oceania like O'Brien himself would be once they discover that Oceania is not what they thought it was, and and they could adapt to living in a democratic system. Maybe they are all programmed to prefer death to capitulation and it is impossible to save them.

This is a sound hypotesis, however it goes directly against 1984' puropose and objective of showing us the danger and reality of totalitarianism. The fact there is no escape from it, because every country has developed his form, is a powerful narrative device. I still remember Winston and his coprotagonist desperately thinking what to do, and the fearsome anxiety that derives from the lack of details on Eurasia's uber-kollectivism and Estasia's doctrine of the "annhilation of the self". And this anxiety is _necessary to have_, it means the novel _works_. So, thinking that there is escape, or victory, is not good if you understand the book. It's something rather similar to the finale of "HE's back" movie: you can't kill AH, even if there the reason is psychological: while in 1984 is material. Both are terrifyng. As it should be.

No : even when realizing they are not a world empire but the tiny remnant of one the population of Oceania would stick to their narrative as to a religion with a mythology like Sparta in ancient Greece who believed the were the mightiest empire in the world extending from Germany to India with Olympus as a capital, even though they had a hard time keeping their own Peloponese relatively independent and they needed armies from without such as the Romans to keep their sovereignty which was based on perpetual war. The Romans just kept them in their daydream and used them to row their boats for free and to kill pirates. I imagine UE conquering Britain would leave them with their Big Brother religion. That totalitarian state would attract tourists.

Really got me thinking. I’d also like to make my own fall of Oceania scenario (included with the fall of Eastasia and Eurasia too). Some time maybe by the 2050’s, 2040’s or 2060’s, resources eventually grow scarce between the empires due to constant warfare with one another, and fighting the wars becomes increasingly difficult as in the warzone the oppressed peoples being at the forefront of the violence establish their own states and societies, largely based off democracy. Ofc they’re initially weak but over they grow increasingly resilient to the empires and eventually able to ward them off. The downfall really kicks off when 2 Indian states encircle thousands of Eastasian and Eurasian troops in a battle titled “the siege of Mumbai,” in which the battle would take months on end, however eventually the troops trapped within the city would be forced to surrender and would send shockwaves across the globe. It would be the straw that broke the camel’s back for Eastasia, which at this point was a shell of what it once was. Eastasia, despite being ideologically identical to the other 2 powers would be much poorer and far more unstable, and would really only get worse as years went. Eventually after the battle of Mumbai, the information about the democratic Indian states and their resounding victory in Mumbai would contribute to inspiring an uprising in Tokyo, which would lead to a Japanese war for independence against Eastasia. Protests and rebellions across Eastasia would plunge it into another warlord era, which would ultimately result in Eastasia fracturing into dozens of states. Eurasia and Oceania would secretly try keeping Eastasia together but they’d face their own problems. For too long Ukrainians in Eurasia have been treated like absolute garbage. Eurasia’s grip on power over it’s population would loosen after generations of new leaders and party infighting, before Ukrainian insurgents which had been secretly fighting in Eurasia for years would start a rebellion in Ukraine, while SSR’s such as the German and French ones would declare independence. Rebellions, Successions, and war would kill Eurasia. Oceania after the death of big brother (who was earl browder, leader of the American communist party, in this timeline), would go through generations of new leaders and party infighting would result into the regions of Oceania succeeding, such as Brazil, which would be followed by most nations in South America . In Oceania, the empire is controlled by amsoc, ingsoc is the British subsidiary to the party, there’s things such as brazsoc, cubsoc, Perusoc or whatever. Africans in Oceania’s South Africa command would rebel, while the various regions of Oceania would succeed. Oceania would try and fail to use force to keep the regions under their control, however by around the 2090’s, none of this would matter as the malevolent authoritarianism of these powers would phased out for benevolent anarchism. The empires would have collapsed. By around the 2120’s authoritarianism would become a thing of the past.
