I think for some people, it's because of that myth (as I call it, lol) about "if you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it." ... and to that, I say, WHY? If I still like/love the piece what I'd rather do is, start shopping my closet(s) more frequently so that I can begin getting the wear out of my items in my wardrobe. I've had items in my wardrobe from 10-15 + years ago like say even BEFORE marriage and kids and/or items I could've purchased over the weekend that I get to wearing for the first time. Yes, my wardrobe is massive, and yes, I have "purged" it down heavily to how I want it now, and yes, thankfully, I can still fit everything... which is why I work out daily 😉😄... my wardrobe is my motivation, lol.
Yup... after brainstorming my style idea with this t-shirt, I went looking for it on the JC Penney site and ... it's sold out 😔. Maybe I'll find the next best alternative.
Thank you for this breakdown. I recently did a purge, with a couple of regrets. Curating makes so much sense. Also, extensive maintenance (dry cleaning and/or ironing) helps in eliminating pieces. My approach now is to wear my art collection, and that makes me very happy!
Yeeesss... I like that approach. Yes... after I "purged" my closet(s) from late last year and throughout this year, I can now say the same... that my wardrobe has now become more in the realm of "curated" of items that I KNOW I want to wear and suited to my taste/style through and through.
I really like the approach of curating your closet as a collection. It forces you to be more focused when deciding what works with regard to form, fit and function.
Yes letting go of pieces is a challenge but for me I just consider the person on the receiving end and how much more it will be used & appreciated, that makes it easier.
This is it exactly!! I’ve volunteered with organizations where people without the means to get new clothing receive donated pieces and to see how it makes them happy is 🥹🥹🥹
wonderful overview!! i'll change my mindset from purge to curate. but i have gotten down now to the pieces I truly love!!! still more than I can ever wear i'm sure!!
New subby here. This vlog was right on time. You dropped gem after gem, and I'm listening! I haven't used the dry cleaners in years but have a friend that constantly does. Brand new dress....to the dry cleaners. When you said going to the dry cleaners is like continuously paying for the item...mind blown! Makes so much sense. Great vlog!
Thats what i am doing. Im putting my clothes on racks in order tops, pants wxt. When im done me and my friend will go through them. Coats and jackets stay if they fit well
I'm currently decluttering my closet and found that I had become overwhelmed and had a hard time letting go of some items (especially gifts. This video is going to help me complete the assignment. In fact, I'm going to watch it as I sort. I'm shipping quite a few items to Zambia, donating to organizations that help women find jobs, and, selling items on Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace and the Real Real. THANK YOU!!!
You are so fabulous and I really enjoyed watching your process. This is just in time as I am doing another closet edit. I love your idea of breaking it up into parts. Taking everything out and putting it all on a bed makes me so anxious just thinking of doing it that way. I have always just tackled on small sections at a time, too. I always donate, but decided recently I will stop donating to Goodwill and only use my smaller local thrift shops from now on. I love the owners and they offer better pricing and I feel like clothing are less likely to go into landfills when using the smaller local thrift shops. Because if they have too much, they will also turn down drop offs as they have full control over what they choose to take and when. For me, I struggle getting rid of things that were gifted to me from family during the holidays every year, but I decided that I just can't hold onto things that do not work with my wardrobe at all and aren't my style. I have taken an entire year to edit my closet and this is the last part of it for hopefully a long time. Btw... I love the printed skirt and I would think it's very versatile with a simple tee and sandals and then for Fall and Winter too with boots and sweaters. The colors in the print look incredible on you and you definitely won't find another like it. Keep!
I prefer to donate to smaller organizations as well. Near me there’s a center that does programs for teens and a lot of them work at their thrift store 😊
Awesome!❤ Decluttering is a form of death for me...I know it's necessary (especially for creative thrifters who also know how to sew!🤦🏾), and I love the clarity & focus it brings and ofcourse it's an opportunity for Spiritual growth (sweeping all the fashion idols off my pedestal!😂)....but it is still HARD! 😢 Curate sounds less BRUTAL...very intellectual, emotionally detached and practical....I can do that too! ❤
I Love you style and advice. I have lost weight and I have been able to shop in my closet (those items I refused to get rid of😂😂) so I am adding new with the old. I am 68 and ready to be different Thank you
Miss Brenda please rethink about that silver skirt from Zara. I have something similar and thought about donating it but, I started styling with graphic tees and game on I love the skirt all over again.
Your title made me watch. I've never subscribed to the closet clean out religion. Most clothes that I buy, were bought after careful consideration. I'll remove stuff to give away, etc. But never any purging. Subscribed!
This was a helpful video…I haven’t purged since I donated about 6 still very nice blazers. A few weeks later I watched purging vids , the first thing she said was never get rid of your blazers! I’m traumatized all over again😂
I’m regret getting rid of suits silk blouses blazers some pumps and a few real leather purses. Those items I gave away are triple in price and the quality is very sheeny and cheap looking. Do I need to go to resale shops to find quality pieces to find my give always.😒😂
Triple in price at quality upscale dept. stores and sometimes the quality in the fabrics are subpar. My point is I need to go the resale or consignment shops and buy my old stuff back , meaning to get the same quality of the things I gave away.
Curating??? I love this idea! This summer i am keeping a list of my daily wears. Hopefully it will help me clean out the closet and more for donations.
I am not stulish by ANY ,eans, but that's why I stick mainly to plain monochromatic clothing. The last skirt looks ethnic ,but still slightly outdated. It will come back again sometime. 😅
Love the graphic tee! Jewelry editing maybe a good video. Until you removed the bangles and the necklace I didn’t really get into that very cool graphic tee! Love the idea of curating a wardrobe
Love the video and your thought process. I have said it before, I LOVE that you are a colorful dresser. So many influencers are so black and white. I can’t wear that because I am a fair skinned, red head. By the way, I would love to be your friend, especially when you are swapping or giving away the items that don’t fit in your collection. 😉😁 I have been taking the approach from Marie Kondo-let someone else “love” the item since I don’t anymore.
I buy timeless pieces not too much trends. Also I have told myself I will only buy 1 or two pieces and it needs to coordinate with something I already have
Thank you for breaking it down this way. I have purged my closet so many times and ending up giving things away that I should’ve kept.

@@lkofie6670 you hit the nail on the head about people saying if you haven’t worn it in a year get rid of it. I really regret listening to that.
@channonwashington6498 Well... at least to date, we can continue taking the "curated" approach 😊.
Yeah…. It happens! 😅 but I tell myself it went to someone that is really making the best of it! 😄
I don’t go for give it away in a year either. 👍🏽
That Ford t shirt is cute, Brenda.
Thank you! It’s from JCPenney men’s 😊
Yes... I can picture wearing it with one of those vintage Nascar/Nascar type racer jackets
Yup... after brainstorming my style idea with this t-shirt, I went looking for it on the JC Penney site and ... it's sold out 😔. Maybe I'll find the next best alternative.
I just got a yellow Ford Mustang tee a few days ago that I am thrilled with! Your shirt is really fun!
I loved Casual Corner as well.
Casual Corner and the Limited! 🎉

I love that you're viewing your clothes as art! 💖
I love your way of curating your closet.

Thank you Brenda! Very helpful and positive way of letting go.
Thank youuuuuu for the encouragement. I’m still going through things! 😅
"Create your own art through your clothes," Wow!
Thanks for the tips my Chicago neighbor! I will definitely be applying his to my closet!
Yessss!! 💃🏽
SO insightful! That skirt is beautiful on you!❤
Thanks Jennifer! I’m going to wear that skirt!😂
The casual corner coat is a gem. ❤
I still have it! 😄
I really like the approach of curating your closet as a collection. It forces you to be more focused when deciding what works with regard to form, fit and function.
It does! It helps to keep me from buying something that’s ‘cute’ but doesn’t work with anything in my closet 😃
These tips were great, but the behind-the-scenes were my fav!
😂😂😂 I just want the people to know, it’s not what it looks like!
This video was very helpful!
I'm so glad! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thank you. I have been using the word curating more often, especially when I invest in something that is quality.

Nice!!!! 👏🏽 what a good friend!
New sub here. I loved the way you explained each piece. I often keep things I know I will not wear. I convince myself I may. Time to get real.
Hi and thanks for joining! I still struggle with letting some pieces go. I go back and forth with myself too! 😂

I also no longer donate to Goodwill. I found a local thrift shop that donates 10% of all their sales to charity. Win,win, win.

Yes!! I’m trying hard to stick to this. It is soooo easy to over consume when you shop secondhand 😅
“Creative thrifter”. That’s me. 😊
Great video! I’m decluttering so need the inspiration! ❤
Yay! Congrats on the declutter! 😅😅😅
Nicee pieces ✨❤️✨Great content
Thank you! 🤗
It's my first time here, I love your style.

New subbie! Love your vibe! I saw a Kika Vargas blouse in your closet that I have as well!
Thanks for subbing! I didn’t get the blouse when it was in store but I found it on Poshmark 😉
You had me at the title!!! Just listening to the video has me feeling like we are besties already 😊😊❤❤❤
I'm so glad!😄😄😄

The real flex is buying pieces that you’ll keep for a long time and love wearing 😁
Having a friend help works for me😂
A friend can help you make the decision to let go. Because it’s easy to talk ourselves out of letting go! 🙋🏽♀️

My moto is: If I buy a dress, I get rid of one and it includes purses, shoes and handbags.
Thanks a good habit to have! I don’t have it unfortunately… ☺️
I've decided not to purge my closet anymore after I lost a lot of weight and wished I haven't donated my old clothes.
I get that. I tell myself whoever has it is probably really happy with it so it was for them to have.
Girl don’t Purge your closet, purge the shopping mall by not going to it for one year. That’s what I did and I am enjoying shopping in my closet
I probably should!!😚
Casual Corner was the sh1t back in the day.
Listennnnnnnnn! The way I was saving my money and waiting for a sale at Casual Corner! LOL!
I think of it as editing.
And sometimes vintage is just old, no matter how well made and superior the fabric, sigh ..
That is true!! Sometimes it’s just old clothes 👋🏽
