I have been working on this intermittently for years, but haven't performed it publicly yet. This explanation makes so much sense, and illustrates the beauty of the deeper structure of the piece, and illustrates Chopin's brilliance so clearly. This gives me a lot of insight into how to interpret this challenging yet very beautiful work. Thanks very much

Thank you very much for that. It illuminates what I had kind of avoided learning, and now I want to give it a read.

Great job! Dramatic, and highlights the restless metric ambiguity and large phrases.

Excellent instruction!! Just when you think you know as a musician and teacher/performer you can miss some things. This happened with this post. Thanks for sharing.

What a great and fascinating lesson on this masterpiece! I've always loved this piece (my favorite out of the four scherzos) - and after watching your video, I appreciate and admire Chopin's genius and originality even more! Thanks so much! 🥰🎹

This was the last piece I was learning before I stopped taking lessons because of college (I didn't major in music). I decided to see if I could pick it back up and this video is so helpful in guiding me through it!

in section 2 is it ok to substitute lh fingers here and there for the rh...seems less akward at times...this whole piece has suck awkward fingerings which makes it the hardest scherzo...its kind of like an etude...any help with this piece greatly appreciated...it is a damn cool piece though....one of my favs...

at Agitato, first measure LH plays f# and d then g and bflat...then similar stuff at measure 5...could you play the upper D with RH instead as if i use LH for both d and the f# its quite tough to play the g and bflat after smoothly...kinda awkward wrist movement...same idea at bar 5 etc...only drawback is than now its harder to keep rhythm. so many technical challenges in this piece, ive abandoned it many times when progress gets too slow but i keep coming back for more punishment...

The technical challenges you are having would require an assessment of your technique directly. I would avoid delegating LH notes as you said to the RH if possible because it is supposed to be an interplay of trading off between the two hands, but that would mix them together and make it a bit complicated I think. To play the initial group in your LH at Agitato, you must move in a straight line with your wrist and forearm to the final Bb under your pinky, moving seamlessly to the left and in towards the piano. Otherwise, I would be happy to examine your current technique over Zoom, let me know.
