HI Joe you did a fantastic job at explaining this , even a wiring challenged person like myself understood it . Thanks for taking the time to sharing this . Take care .
Thank you Joe for the fine demonstration and simplifying how to wire. Another little item I use is ribbon cable between tortoise and screw block that keeps everything uniform.
Great tutorial. I’m thinking we make t-shirts with that last image. They’ll go viral. I haven’t thought about making the shirts at all... so... makes sense. 50/50 split.
Great video Joe! Where are you connecting the white wire under the turnout and are you cutting any wires or soldering anything for the frog also that DPDT toggle switch what are the specifications.
The white wire is the frog wire that comes off the turnout. I run that wire to the terminal block so I can they run a wire from the other side of the terminal block to the green wire on the tortoise switch. I do solder wires to the frog, and the DPDT switch. I bought the DPDT switch off of amazon. They have many different types on there.
Hello Joe, Good video. My layout grew where i had to put separate utp panels at various locations. Before I operated it from a central command station in which i used the DPDT toggle switch. Now I have a switch 8 board in which I use the accessory button on my pro cab. My problem is I cant get my directional lights to work. Can I get my directional lights to work if i wired them to the tortoise?
In truth, you do know how to understand how 8 cables are connected, I congratulate you. I have a lot of turtles and I have not been able to connect any because I don't know and few like you explain correctly. The cable 4 in which part of the frog you connect it?
Hi Joe thank you for all your info very easy to understand, Could you please tell me what value resistors you are using on your leds. Sorry Im 80 & just cant get my head round the formula to work it out myself. my dwarf slignals are working but my resistors are getting very warm,,,,,Cheers U.K. Brian
just getting started how many tortoise machines can you run off of 12v adapter.. my problem is i have 20 on my layout and can't get enough power to them to operate.. please any information will help. Thanks David. PS loved the video
Thank you for your kind words. I am not sure how much power that would take. Have you looked at a computer power pack? Those put out a lot of power that can be distributed out to many areas.
All those wires are why I opted for using the snaps terminals on the Tortoise and the touch toggles for moving the points. It’s not much more money, but much, much easier to wire. ...Claude
@@JoeG-firehousewhiskey Sorry if I sounded like I was knocking your approach, I wasn't. I know a lot of guys doing very much like you are showing, because it works. I just weighed my options and when I found the Touch Toggles, that did it for me. Keep going...I'll keep watching!!
Just at the point where I'm starting to wire my turnouts. I've got Atlas turnout so I don't think I need to mess with the frog, but trying to make sense of the rest of the arrangement. Thanks for posting this. Seems like there are many options for powering/diodes/panel design I hadn't really considered before. You said your power is 5 volts. Is this a buss arraignment that runs around the table in the same way that the DCC power is fed? And what are you using to provide power? I thought 9 volts was the preferred voltage.
Yes I have a separate bus for the tortoise switches. And you can run the tortoise switches at 3 volts 5 volts 9 volts or 12, it just depends on how fast you want it to move the less volts the slower it moves. Also, I'm using a wallboard to power them.
I have a bipolar LED also but I can’t see how you wired it up to the toggle switch. The switch is too small to see in the video. A diagram would be nice.
I would recommend looking at this video. It is pretty involved to wire up a DPDT switch. You can check this video out. ruclips.net/video/Ux4bGLtejfo/видео.htmlsi=QmGkxR9tzIVYDnyH Hopefully this helps.
Gave him a glass of water. :-0 That's great Joe. I had no idea that wiring a tortoise was this complicated. I'm going to have lot's of turnouts. Do you have to repeat this process for each turnout ? or will any of this work for multiple ones? I'm going to move over from DC soon. The pause in the video where you came in and offered additional explanation was really cool. very effective and attention grabbing. That was a strong part of the video. Brian
Yes this has to be done every time, there are easier ways that use less wires. I wanted to show everyone how to use all the tabs effectively. Thanks for your kind words
Man I’m even more confused. It’s really only the words coming outta your mouth that confuse me. Everything else makes sense. But I’m not going to think about it!😜. Thanks joe. Great video.
I’ve looked at a lot of these and yours is by far the best. Thank you. H
Thank you very much, I appreciate your compliment
HI Joe you did a fantastic job at explaining this , even a wiring challenged person like myself understood it . Thanks for taking the time to sharing this . Take care .
Im glad it was helpful to you. I had a heck of a time figuring this out lol
I'm glad someone made a video on this, you beat me to it...you did a great job Joe. Bob
You should do one still. The more the merrier. Everyone has a different way of doing it which is a good thing.
Thank you Joe for the fine demonstration and simplifying how to wire. Another little item I use is ribbon cable between tortoise and screw block that keeps everything uniform.
Ribbon cable would have been great, and I have seen people use those screw blocks.
Thanks Joe, this is a great comprehensive video for wiring these up. I like that you made the display to help demonstrate how it should be done.
Thank you, I appreciate your feed back. I was hoping it would help people out a little bit.
Thanks Joe....this video really simplified wiring the tortoise 👍🏽. Anthony
I appreciate your kind words. Im glad you thought it was helpful
That seriously, is some very expert use of black tape. You should do a video on the use of black tape
hahaha where is the middle finger emoji on here!!
I like the crudeness. Nice.
Great job Joe and the tape was a good idea.
lol my first take the tortoise was invisible, so i had to put some tape on it.
Excellent how to video, Joe G. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, thanks for watching and commenting
Well done Joe! Thanks for laying it out so it can be seen easily.
You got it! Hopefully you get a car in the next day or so!
I have a bunch of those to hook up some day.Thank you for showing how too
So far it had taken a few house each switch. So are your time.
I need to bookmark this. Thanks for this great "how-to"
No problem, Im glad it was helpful

hahaha youre the second person to want to make shirts
Nice explanation & example Joe! Best, John
Thank you for your kind words!
Nice and concise.

I wish you would have put that on before I installed 50 of them. Nice video
hoy crap, 50? Im sure after 50 you are more than qualified to install them
@@JoeG-firehousewhiskey I guess not. I didn't even know about the lights. That will be handy.

I would think so. If you wired the way I did it should work
Good how to, Joe.

Any part of the frog should be good. I normally connect it to the middle of the frog.
Joe G great video
Thank you very much

I dont exactly remember off hand. All my train stuff is in storage at the moment. But, I normally use 1000 to 2000 ohm resistors.

They also have a adapter that connects to the tortoise as well so you don’t have to solder to the tortoise itself
yeah, I saw that. But, Im to cheap for that lol

On February 30th.

Can you use a 12 volt bus
Yes you can, the speed of the tortoise depends on the volts. Less volts the slower it moves, or the more volts the faster it moves
Can you hook the commons up to poles 1and 8 also
Tom Trains, Hi I hope to see you wire up a tortoise onto a three 3 rail Hi buff like myself, Chuckg
Oh im not sure I even know how to do that!
