Not for expletives and blood, but so we can get some of those character moments on the editing room floor back into the movie, maybe fix a few of those clunky lines and give it that darker, body-horror vibe!
@@Amrylin1337 I'll admit very generic in writing, but not execution. Call me a Tom Hardy fanboy but his role wasn't just interesting, it made me care about him and about his relationships. I wish he and the other actors had more control over the script and maybe this movie could have doctored up some of the weaker or more cliche scenes. Part of me says Kevin Feige and Marvel would do this movie better, but at the same time it probably would NOT have allowed Tom Hardy to do what he did here. That difference is what made me enjoy this movie; it's kind of like Marvel's kooky cousin that has some issues but also shows everyone else at the party how to let loose.
Ironic that people who love the "slow boil" of Hereditary get anxious at Venom's first 15 minutes. And it's not like it all that time was useless filler; they outline Eddie's starting point, his relationships with some secondary characters, his innate goodness hiding in a douchey exterior, and his struggle to better himself. And this was all done in a "Show, don't tell" fashion.
I really liked Venom but you can't compare it to Hereditary. Hereditary built atmosphere, dread and tension during it's build up Venom just set up a poorly written villain and a boring love story.
It was a really fun movie and the action sequences with Venom were amazing to watch. But I felt like the movie definitely needed to be longer, at least 2 hours. Tom Hardy was really good though
I agree it should have been longer, to play around more with the central relationship, but I think the action was weak, especially the climax. If only the evil symbiote had been a different colour to stand out
Could it have been better? Yea. I really like it though. I think that the thing that really does it is the banter between Brock and Venom and Tom Hardy's performance.
Great Review you guys! Watched this a couple days ago and forgot to mention that. You guys are very very great respectful movie reviewers and it’s why I keep coming back. You go into detail and give great, well explained perspectives that I truly enjoy hearing and comparing my own views on movies with. So thank you and keep it up!!
I feel weird not agreeing with Roth lol she seems to hate this movie. I didn't even know Michelle Williams wore a wig buuuuut lemme tell ya, that wig on Woody Harrelson was unquestionably atrocious.
This is one of the most Honest reviews of Venom on RUclips. At one point Roth said "...and i know im being the not fun one and im gonna get yelled at" to that I say, its refreshing to not have a fake persona of YAY THIS IS ALL GREAT for the sake of RUclips, you can ALL not like something and tell us why. i dont want to watch a review where everyone has a sterile corporate answer
What kills me is every other time the complaint is no character development. ‘Why should I care about these characters “ is something I’ve heard a lot.
Just wanted to say I really enjoy seeing Dan and Roth together as a team here; they work so well together. They're my new favorite reviewing/discussion duo. And I'm looking forward to seeing Venom this weekend...[Spoilers] Tom Hardy making out with Venom... that alone is already worth the ticket price, imho.
Eddie Brock was a creep in the movie but I loved the movie overall. Also I am so tired of the “This isn’t a perfect movie but”. That line is so tired and is used as a mask to make it seem like you don’t wanna let everybody know how much you loved it.
I LOVED this movie! I thought it was hilarious, and I liked the disconnect between Eddie/Venom and the rest of the world. I liked how, at the beginning, Eddie was being pulled along at societies pace, but by the end society/people were being pulled along (reacting to) the craziness that is Venom.
So many have said that the movie is fun, but bad. Not sure why a movie someone is entertained by would register as bad to them. I enjoyed the movie, so therefore (and prepare to be shocked) I consider it to be a good movie. OMG.
I think Eddie seeing Anne’s email about the lawsuit against Carlton Drake is what made him call him out in the interview. It seemed like he was willing to be sensible, but after seeing that went “Yeeeahhhh screw that.” Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I took it.
I'm hearing a lot of people complaining that the first half is a slog, but I couldn't disagree more. I thought the movie did a good job at setting up Eddie's profession and his relationship with Anne, that way when he f*cks up and loses his job AND his fiancé it actually hurts, especially when she gives him back the ring after being fired because of him. That was excellent character development IMO. You can't do that if they had just breezed past the beginning and getting straight to Venom taking over. I also don't feel like it took forever to see Venom, they built up the reveal pretty good: the mirror scene, him yelling at the neighbor, beating up the mercenaries, the reflection in the car window.I feel like the people complaining expected the film to blow its Venom load a few minutes into the movie instead of building up Eddie as a character in the first act.
It's nowhere near as bad a people are making it out to be. Sure there are iffy parts but I enjoyed it and I appreciate that they haven't tried to shoehorn it into the MCU. Also the whole point about the symbiote eating him from the inside, it's made clear in the movie that it only does this if it doesn't have food i.e. eating other people.
I'm with Dan on this one. I had a lot of fun with Venom mainly because of Tom Hardy and Venom! The two characters just work so well, and Venom felt like a seperate independent character. Also it was a lot funnier than I expected!
i just watched it and I don't get who could ever not like it? It's such a fun movie... the humor is great. I laughed a lot, which did not happen with me for a while with comic movies. something tells me this movie might do very well in Russia. The type of a loser hero who's somehow also too good for this world with some inner demon (also loser) who ridicules him all the time is very much our type of hero. There's actually a Russian folk story about a stupid loser guy who finds a crooked little horse who turns out to be magic and then together they beat everyone although the guy screws all the time, he gets the beautiful princess and somehow also becomes handsome non-loser)))
neither do I. if I nitpick, I can deconstruct any comic book movie, cause it's still a particular genre that at the moment would always have flaws. I think it's also a cultural thing though... I grew up in a culture where there were no superhero stories and was introduced to them much later in life. So I never search for the truth to the comics style, or characters as they were in books, or whatever - I just don't know it. And all the comic book stories seem rather schematic and plain to my Dostoyevsky-spoilt mind anyway. So it's simpler for me: if it makes me laugh, it's good. If it's a compelling story, it's good. If there's half-naked Jason Momoa for 50% of the film time, it's also good.
As a person who had little to know about the character of Venom, the whole act before Venom "appears", was very entertaining for me and when Venom finally appeared, it was really amazing! I thought it was really worth the wait!
I love how entertaining this movie was, its very easily enjoyable, it wasnt slow or boring, it kept moving the whole time, it and both serious stuff and funny stuff, they nailed it with Venom and Eddie Brock, it focuses on them which it 100% should have and the rest is pretty much irrelevant and there is no reason for you to really care about anything else apart from those two, they had to get Eddie Brock and Venom right and they did which makes it a good movie already cause thats the whole point, Carlton Drake isnt a bad villain I think people just expected something more or different which I dont understand why, he was a very ambitious guy who didnt care about anyone or anything and he just wanted to achieve his goal, it was fine, Michelle Williams was also fine she was a good complement, she wasnt there to steal the show, she wasnt there to be great, she did her job, the movie overall also looked pretty good, maybe the start could have been a bit faster and we could have gotten to Venom a bit earlier but it didnt really feel slow and boring, I dont really see too much wrong with this movie it is what it should be and it did right what it should have done right, Tom Hardy was amazing!
Looking for sense in a comic book world.....not.......loved the movie saw it twice and laughed alot....not looking for realism or structure but got different and new......loved it.....twice.....
I felt like the first half tried to set up the premise methodically but then the second half felt so rushed and chopped up. That being said, Venom was awesome. I definitely need to see the director's cut. And a sequel.
The humor in Venom made all the difference for me providing an entertaining experience. Thanks to Roth for mentioning that WIG, omg only Michelle Williams' talent kept me from staring only at that WIG every time she came onto the screen. Definitely in the Sue Storm Wig Hall of Infamy. Oh and add that brightly colored wig shown in a certain scene of Venom. All that being said (admittedly from the point of view of someone who never read those comics), this movie deserves more love than it is currently getting on RT. It is not a classic, but Venom is enjoyable.
I’m glad that I watched the other SJU review with the Dans before walking into the movie. I approached the movie ready to give the stuff around Tom Hardy more slack while it got to his performance, and genuinely enjoyed it!
Among the weird things that no one has talked about is how they spent some much time on that one symbiote get away from the crash in Malaysia, went into another body, went to the airport got into a passenger (who was a little girl) headed to San Francisco who then transferred to Riz Ahmed. Seemed like a needlessly elaborate way of setting up your villain especially when they had 3 other symboites in the facility already.
Just finished watching Venom and came here to see what Roth and Dan thought. Have to agree with Dan. I am genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Thought it would be 'meh' like The Meg...and it was for the first 20 minutes or so...but once Eddie/Tom Hardy gets that symbiote back to his apartment and the bizarre battle/relationship between them begins, this movie becomes a funny, kinetic, bonkers experience that just had me smiling almost the whole time. Even the Venom theme song at the end was pretty darn good!
The sheer no. of incompetent people in positions of power in the world should prove that you can be incompetent & be recognized as the best at their jobs ( at least during their brief heyday, till they get caught our)... Hence Eddie Brock being called Great at his job n being an idiot or unfortunate is perfectly Realistic...
I've gained a ton of respect for Dan in this whole thing. He really sticks to his guns and is not afraid of having an unpopular opinion. I feel like many reviewers were actually scared of saying they legitimately liked the movie because of the critical reception it got. Seems like audiences are loving it though.
I'm with Dan! WE ARE VENOM! You can't enjoy the full scope of Eddy vs Venom, if you don't establish Who Eddy is and why he would want to bond with Venom. Oddly, the only big issue I had was that I thought they named the female Doctor: DR. SKIRT. Then they show the spelling, and it ends in a "th". I think this works ONLY without Spider-man.
At the end of the movie, Venom says he needs food before he eats Eddie’s liver. I took that as, at first Venom didn’t care and he was slowly consuming Eddie’s organs for nourishment. But by the end, he agreed to lived together with a Eddie, not hurting each other.
I don't know if anyone already mentioned this or not, but I think the line 'Your liver is looking real good ' explains him not dying. Where the symbiote choses not to consume its host
Three things: 1.) I 100% agree with Dan 2.) I really really want the Venom sequel to be Venom eats everyone 3.) This movie absolutely cannot be in the MCU because A.) Michelle Williams references kryptonite, and B.) Eddie Brock jokes about aliens, seemingly believing that they're not real
I like the film and prefer this Eddie Brock to the one in the comics. He is relatable (he hide behind the shelves when Mrs Chan is robbed) and always tries to do the right thing (even though his methods aren't always legitimate). I'm no film critic and honestly do not understand why and how the film collapses around itself. I just thought that Eddie Brock is pretty well fleshed out. And since this whole story is about him and Venom, it is totally ok to me if the supporting cast is bland. Marvel movies have always been about the protagonists. Unlike Batman. And I agree with Dan that Spiderman should not enter this universe. I'm fine with having Venom as the flag bearer of this Sonyverse. This current Spidery should stay in the MCU.
I've seen the movie twice and I love Venom, and I want to love Eddie Brock, but his character is so confusing. I say this as someone who enjoyed both viewings: it is almost entirely incohesive. Easily, the best part of the movie is definitely Venom. The pacing was pretty off, they tried to marry the "buddy cop" and "alien horror" genres, and the script is like copied and pasted directly from examples of tired tropes in movies. But it's a really fun movie with a lot of spectacles and banter that make it worthwhile. Lol
Forget about Michelle's wig, I couldn't even tell that was wig. But Woody's wig at the mid-credits, THAT was a wig! A legit wig! That was definitely a wig! Woody's wig!!
How do you guys feel about looking at “illegal” downloads when it comes to new movies? I’m in China, where downloading is not illegal, so I fully intend to watch Venom this weekend without going to a theatre. It seems logical that downloads will contribute to how people talk about new movies, something to think about when it comes to stuff like Charting with Dan.
Completely agree with all the problems Roth brought up. But I also enjoyed the movie a lot when the good stuff started rolling like Dan did. Man I wish they'd gone full crazy, could have been so much fun ^^

These two both have different views on the film and characterisation of Eddie and him being a journalist weirdly I totally see where both are coming from. Overall im more ok Dan’s side and liked the film
I see Dan's point of how Venom wants to be the "king of the hill" as the only symbiote on Earth, but I don't think the movie sold his "enemy of my enemy is my friend" motivation. Venom felt more superhero-y than anti-hero-y.
I love that you guys get so into the details that you were talking about who/how the heads that were bitten off got metabolized. I also vote for instant metabolization. :D

That difference is what made me enjoy this movie; it's kind of like Marvel's kooky cousin that has some issues but also shows everyone else at the party how to let loose.
I loved the second half of the movie but found the first half kind of boring.
I had so much fun watching this movie. I wouldn't mind seeing it again sometime.
If only the evil symbiote had been a different colour to stand out
This movie has a killer soundtrack
It did💯
Lol no it was pretty awful but it made it funny and weird
you are entitled to an opinion. even when its wrong.
I remember this shitty generic autotune up the ass rap song but other then that i only remember the Eminem song at the end
Eminem
Loved the movie and not going to apologize for it🙌🏻
Could it have been better?
Thank you!
Can’t agree more with Dan on everything here.
I feel weird not agreeing with Roth lol she seems to hate this movie. I didn't even know Michelle Williams wore a wig buuuuut lemme tell ya, that wig on Woody Harrelson was unquestionably atrocious.
That's why I liked it.
I noticed her wig just in the commercials lol it is pretty bad. I think Roth gave a pretty nuanced take and just thought most of the film didn't work.
I didn’t know she was wearing a wig either. And spoiler alert! People wear wigs in real life and they don’t always look good.
It reminded me so much of side show Bob haircut from the Simpsons
This is one of the most Honest reviews of Venom on RUclips. At one point Roth said "...and i know im being the not fun one and im gonna get yelled at" to that I say, its refreshing to not have a fake persona of YAY THIS IS ALL GREAT for the sake of RUclips, you can ALL not like something and tell us why. i dont want to watch a review where everyone has a sterile corporate answer
I've been watching Venom reviews all day, and this by FAR my favorite review. You guys are great.
The beginning wasn’t so bad. Eddie Brock was just so fun, even when he was just being a drunk loser
What kills me is every other time the complaint is no character development. ‘Why should I care about these characters “ is something I’ve heard a lot.
I'm with dan on this one 👍🏽
Also, give Michelle Williams her own symbiote for the sequel 😛
Give me more of that T H I C C N E S S 😩👌💦
@NickToVa
I'm VERY glad I'm not the only one who thought that! 🤤
Lol she’ll kill herself if we do that. She becomes She-venom twice before she commits suicide from her rampage as she-venom
She already has one. The wig.
julietrc15 😂😂😂
So many have said that the movie is fun, but bad. Not sure why a movie someone is entertained by would register as bad to them. I enjoyed the movie, so therefore (and prepare to be shocked) I consider it to be a good movie. OMG.
@@Amrylin1337 Investigation complete.
Think of it this way....it's fun but deeply flawed.
I think Eddie seeing Anne’s email about the lawsuit against Carlton Drake is what made him call him out in the interview. It seemed like he was willing to be sensible, but after seeing that went “Yeeeahhhh screw that.”
Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I took it.
I loved watching Tom Hardy and Venom go at it.
LOVED Venom, the character. Venom, the movie, would have been somewhere between meh and bleh, but Eddie and the Symbiote make this movie super fun.
I loved this movie, the fans loved this movie, and money talks. I can't wait for the sequel. Great video and respectable critique.
Sony broke Dan.
LoL
Enjoyed the review. It wasn't too venomous. Cheers 👌🏽
Interesting to get a new view point. I really liked the movie too. It's not perfect but I don't understand the REALLY bad reviews.
neither do I. if I nitpick, I can deconstruct any comic book movie, cause it's still a particular genre that at the moment would always have flaws.
Venom was really good!! Imagine if they went rated R instead
Even if this movie bombs we’re going to get another Venom movie due to his popularity.
I really have to agree about Jenny Slate! I thought they were totally setting her up to be Scream and they just wasted her.
Honestly. Dan and Roth are GREAT. I genuinely have love in my hearts for them.
Dan and Roth rock together. Better than Siskel and Ebert.
Havent seen the movie yet, still going to watch this haha
Watched it last night, liked it and I enjoyed it.
The wig added to the fun for me
I’m glad that I watched the other SJU review with the Dans before walking into the movie.
Anne Weying will take off the wig in Venom 2, just to please this goof.
Dan defending Venom is how I felt defending The Book of Henry. :)
All these bad movies finally made Dan crack
Great assessment 😂😂😂😂 guess it was inevitable
So it made 80mil kudos to Sony for the side hustle! 😊 No thx
See here’s the thing Roth, you are not wrong. The wigs? Awful. The dialogue? Very bad. Did I like it? Yes. Do I want more? Definitely!
Damm....Dan had more criticism for Ant-Man and the Wasp!! 😜😜
I don't know if anyone already mentioned this or not, but I think the line 'Your liver is looking real good ' explains him not dying. Where the symbiote choses not to consume its host
Three things:
1.) I 100% agree with Dan
2.) I really really want the Venom sequel to be Venom eats everyone
3.) This movie absolutely cannot be in the MCU because A.) Michelle Williams references kryptonite, and B.) Eddie Brock jokes about aliens, seemingly believing that they're not real
I thought they failed at developing Venom's character, he just randomly decides to like Earth and his motivations change for no reason.
What I love about this conversation is that I agree with both of them.
Not a bad movie. Just missing some elements. Just give Marvel it’s characters back so everyone can win in the end and be satisfied completely.
Well, Sony would not win from that arrangement.
Always love that intro, sounds like a sped up version of power reactor shutting down to the limit except that little end...
"Its so different that its sooo good" I kinda like how this statement feels so *_Venom._*
Loved this review,thanks doods~!
Dan's popcorn reference metaphor was brilliant. Sums up the movie.
Always watch, rarely comment. (not gonna add my opinion of the film) Just wanna say happy to watch respectful and intelligent discourse. You guys are great, hearing you disagree really enables you to expound in you opinions. Please keep it up, having that 12th angry man is clutch. That's part of the recipe for. good movie fights
I had so much fun. Watched it last night, sold out theatre, everyone was laughing. There may be problems with the movie but I wasn't expecting a flawless masterpiece. Loved that they put an extra wiggy wig on Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams.
