    Great advice LWC. It is a journey and we do make mistakes along the way. Last year I traded my 116520 (black) for a 116500 (panda) at grey market prices. Although I loved the Panda after 2 weeks of ownership I could not justify the grey market price. Fortunately my dealer allowed me to return it but by then my 116520 had been sold so we had to come to a financial arrangement which worked for both. It was a tough lesson. I will still love the Panda but only at retail. We live and learn 😁👍

    • @truxton1000
      @truxton1000 3 года назад +3

      @@dioaldinoharsono6746 Value is “what you get”? Really? If you talk about value in terms of real money the value is usually determined from what you can sell it for. If someone buy a Daytona for $20.000 in 2018 and sell for 22.000 in 2021 no one would say it was not worth $20.000 in 2018, or any other year after that before 2021?.
      Or have I missed something crucial....?
      Any object is worth the price the market values that item at any given time, the price goes up and down the same as a property, a share in a company or any asset you can imagine. To say “it’s not worth it” would be the same as saying a $10 bill is not worth $10 as it’s only a piece of paper and is worth much less as you can’t eat it, you can’t use it for anything practical other than a symbolic value.

    • @Smithy67
      @Smithy67 3 года назад +1

      @@truxton1000 Yes, you’re completely missing the point lol
      It seems you’re boiling “value” down to either practicality (you can eat it) or monetary (whether you can sell it for more money) measurements. Fine and good, but that’s not the point of watch collecting, is it?
      Watches aren’t practical. Your smartphone does most anything a watch can do, and does it better. Additionally, there’s not much monetary value in most watches as the price people are willing to pay for a used one is less than the price of a new one.
      However, the personal satisfaction one gets is really the measure of “value”. Some people probably couldn’t be paid to have a Daytona in their collection while others would pay more than $20k. If it makes the collector happy, then yes it’s brought “value” to the table.

    • @truxton1000
      @truxton1000 3 года назад

      @@TheJohnGalt1945 I think we agree totally, meaning of value is what someone is willing to pay, even if it’s only one person willing to pay $20.000 at that time or any given time that’s the value. So then it’s “worth it”. And watch collection is about that as well as several other things like interest, passion etc. About most watches not being a good investment at all that’s of course true, only Rolex, Patek and a few other exceptions have been and probably and maybe still will be good in the of course unknown future....

    When the pandemic hit in March, grey market prices took a brief but steep dip. I bought a panda dial 116500LN for $20,000 USD. Near unworn condition, full box and papers, and 2 years left on the factory warranty. It was hard to pull the trigger because it isn’t worth that much BUT I knew I would never get it for a better price and I could sell it at any time for a profit. I don’t regret buying it at all.

    The people who complain that Rolex watches are overpriced are normally people who are not really into watches or they can't afford one themselves.
    Seven years ago, you could have probably walked into a authorised dealership and purchased any number of Rolex watches. That's exactly what I did. Seven or eight years I bought my Rolex "Hulk" Submariner directly from the local authorised Rolex dealership. In fact, I knew nothing about the green Rolex. I had every intention on just purchasing a Rolex with a black bezel. However, I was shown the green Rolex out of interest. It was only about £45 more expansive than the regular Rolex. So I decided to purchase it because it was different. I'm by glad I made that decision. I paid £6040 for the watch. I'm sure I don't need to say that there is every chance I get double my money now. I asked the same dealership if they could get me Rolex Daytona with a white dial. Two months later they contacted me to say they had got a Daytona, but it had a black dial. I wasn't going to worry about that. Again, I paid £7800 for the watch. I'm quite confident somebody would pay double that I offered it for sale.
    For me, the watches were certainly an excellent investment. But I think I managed to catch the boat before it sailed, leaving everybody else having to pay a premium for these watches now.

    White 116500, black 116520 is the right combination for 6 digits Daytona.
    However it is a pity you are having a buyer’s remorse as the black one is a grail for so many people.
    Although they have the same name and similar looks from far, the 16520 is a complete different watch once on your wrist. It is more delicate, has the vintage touch that will give you much satisfaction. You need to be very careful though as there are many variations that could fetch for single to 10 times the price.

      I’m convinced a Rolex Daytona Ceramic is worth £20k. Ok demand maybe drop or rolex might increase production but still 90 percent of people will not be able to get them at retail. Is a Patek 5980 in steel worth £60k? Is a Royal Oak worth 26-30k. Is your house which was made in the 80s worth the same prices in 2021? When will people see it’s worth what people will pay

    I suspect some folks who claim to be addicted to watches, might actually be addicted to BUYING watches (or perhaps "acquiring" watches). If there were actually true affection for HAVING watches, why are so many purchases very quickly followed by the impulse to purchase others? Perhaps because the rush isn't from HAVING the watch - the rush is from the three-step process of desiring the watch, looking for the watch, acquiring the watch. I think more emphasis should be put on loving the watches you have rather than the ones you don't...

    It’s worth $50k if the SS 5711 is at $100k. This is all about supply and demand and the SS Daytona has been in very limited supply for over 2 decades. The Rolex cal.4130 movement is THE best movement Rolex has ever created. You have a better chance winning the lottery than getting a SS Daytona at retail.

    So for the past 3 years I have been saving every penny and investing to hopefully buy a Rolex Daytona before my graduation in May. A few months ago I was finally prepared to buy the watch. So I went to my closest Ad. DIDNT EVEN PUT ME ON THE LIST! However, I kept trying. Now I am on the list with another Ad who said they would try to get me a Daytona before Graduation. However, I think they may have just said that to be nice. I feel discouraged to be honest.
    I just don’t know what to do because I’ve worked so hard for this watch.
    It is partly my fault as I know it’s the toughest model to get but also why does Rolex have to cut supply. They don’t benefit at all from these grey market prices except it puts hype around their watches

  • @robynsjp

    It depends whether you want it and how bad. By how bad I mean how much you want that watch to literally become part of you, in body and soul. To me it must be a sports piece with very high vintage features - 1960s pieces. A modern piece just will not do it, because it does not age and therefore feels like it has no soul. They are watches that I wear for work, but not passion pieces that I wear during my personal, special time. But that's just me. Wear what you love.
