Can't expect a singer to be on top form ALL the time. He sounds tired and dehydrated, like he has been left out in the sun too long. Not his usual excellent standard - despite many bits managing to shine through as good as he normally does.
I just don't like his highly mannered and affected style of singing. He was born in Philadelphia, was a rich kid who went to private school, but he tries to sound black and/or southern. It just doesn't work. I like his melodies, harmonica, and guitar, but he seems to be playing a part, and I'm not convinced.
wow...option B: he found a style a music he can relate to and tries to take it, blend it and share it past where he found it. He doesn't need to convince you. Saw him last night and he was ON.
Yeah, I hear you. You could argue that John Fogerty did much the same thing -- bayou themes from Northern Cal. Again, I like every part of G Love's music but the vocals. And you are absolutely right, he certainly does not need to convince Elmo of anything. I wish him well.
G love have been around for decades. I'm black, I love his music. And he is cool as heck.

I saw him live and the guy is a great performer, great music, great sound and i never got the idea he was tryin' to sound black...
