  • Not one, not two, but three simple watercolour birds for this tutorial!
This tutorial is all about celebrating not only my new book, Simply Paint Birds, but also celebrating this wonderful medium of watercolour and how simple we can make a subject to achieve some fantastic results.
Far from just a tutorial on birds, this is somewhat back to basics, building form, then looking at the essential techniques and concepts that make up watercolour painting - for any subject or skill level!
We start with a Snowy Owl, looking at wet-in-wet light colours, with an expressive approach to markings and a few finishing touches.
Next, we paint a pair of puffins to explore more colours and a sense of setting; all building towards a green parrot to bring all these ideas together and to have a good play with colour and wet in wet work, in both shadows and light.
I say this almost every time…but this is a really fun one!
    See you there!

Shame this isn't available as a standalone, individually priced. I don't want, and can't, afford to pay £14 a month, but I would pay for the occasional session like this one. I don't particularly like working from books either, so that's not really a good alternative for me personally. Lovely work though.

Your lovely book just arrived. Glad I preordered. Raining outside, so an afternoon of painting for me. Thanks Tom.
