    Hey Tom, thought I would mention, only the Pro line of switches will be getting the L3 functionality once it comes to the controller, the functionality is already in the CLI interface, however iirc it does not survive a reboot. Just thought I would clear that up. the Pro switches, have L3, more POE ports, and SFP+ support. The normal line of switches are passively cooled, with less POE headroom and ports overall, with the added LCM functionality. Just thought I would let you know.

    The Gen 1 offers more POE Ports and more POE total wattage available. I don't care if the gen 1 is louder and maybe runs a little warmer it was more flexible. The 16 port Gen 2 can only run a couple 4k cameras and AP's until it's out of capacity from a POE wattage stand point. I would only upgrade to the pro version if I needed 10gb or supposed layer 3. The standard Gen 2 switches is a huge disappointment period

      @majik11111 3 года назад

      @Jaylincry Though it doesn't make that much sense considering this device still only has 1 Gbit/s connectivity. It's not like anybody will use this as a core switch (at least I hope), it's more of a access switch.

    • @majik11111
      @majik11111 3 года назад

      @Jaylincry So why can't the router handle the traffic in that case? In my home network it would be a bottleneck since I have a gigabit down ISP link, one NAS and a seperate server with 9 VM's.
      A switch with a SFP+ port would be ideaal for 10 Gbit/s communication from my switch(es) to my UDM Pro.

  • @turbo2ltr

    I installed my USW-Pro-24 POE last week. Absolutely love this switch. Powers all my cameras and a 3 of the 5 access points. I was running the 150w 8 port before but switched to this due to better cooling since it actually has fans. Using the SPF+ port as an uplink from my core 10GbE switch. Great review Tom.

  • @james1234168
    @james1234168 4 года назад +2

    Insane that in 2020 we can't get sfp+ on a 24 port switch. Only 1g uplink :/ one of the real killers for me when deciding on ubiquiti

  • @bkmail81
    @bkmail81 4 года назад +2

    Is it right to think that these run cooler because they have almost 62% less PoE capacity at 95w, down from 250w? This will be the major reason why I will likely buy the gen 1 version. 95w isn't enough to run 4 access points, 5 cameras, and a cloudkey gen 2 plus.

    The only problem with my existing Unifi switches is the heat, my units run between 50-70c and would probably appreciate a low rpm fan. :D - Love the screen functionality and promised L3 support. Can’t see myself dropping these into a production rack anytime soon but will definitely get one for my lab. I couldn’t help but notice USP-RPS mentioned on the gen2 site, I might have misunderstood but a custom UPS solution? Why reinvent the wheel, I would much prefer a second standard connector.
    Thanks again for the informative video.

    • @sitte24
      @sitte24 4 года назад +1

      RPS ist not a UPS, it's designed to supply redundant power to the devices if you want it. Real enterprise hardware quite always has multiple power supplies because they like to die at some point and since downtime costs money ubiquiti decided to not equip their lineup with 2 power supplies but rather built a box to provide redundant power. It's kinda stupid tho because if the RPS system fails, there goes your redundancy for a few devices and not just single ones.

  • @_TbT_

    I just wanna have SFP+ in all of their switches as standard. What are they thinking???? The uplink of 16 / 24 ports is miserable with only 1GB links (even with link aggregation).
    Thanks for showing us the new Gen2 switches.

  • @cbremer83
    @cbremer83 4 года назад +1

    The only thing I do not like is the lack of POE on all ports. I am assuming there is a model with all ports powered? I run all my home wiring through a patch panel and the POE is kinda randomly spread throughout those. Mostly for AP units and one other 8 port switch. With my first gen 250watt switch I don't have to worry about what ports I plug into and I like that.

    Removal of passive PoE is kind of a deal breaker for me right now. I don't know if they're trying to keep people from mixing AirMax devices in with Unifi or what their plan is, but it's rather annoying.

    • @tin2001
      @tin2001 4 года назад

      Removal of passive is actually a selling point for me.... Removes that chance of someone plugging a gigabit device into a passive port and rendering it a 100mbps only device.

    • @philipcook7608

      @Spencer Iezzi I currently have 7 passive devices plugged in. So an extra $140 would be rather painful.

    Just getting into this " switch " area. It is a beautiful unit however, it only has 120w and available 95w. For a regular home with 2 ap ( unifi 6 lite ) and 3 ip cameras this should be fine correct?....with a little room to spare. I would ideally like everything to be the same with little amount of fiddling around.
    All this being said would there be another solution that would work great with unifi6 lite ap's that would not cause any problems?

    I am watching this 3 years later, and I still am not sure of the benefit of the display in most use cases. Most switches are in a rack in a server room or remote and not really somewhere that is being watched during normal day to day operations. Opening the software, to me, seems to be something more likely to be done than physically looking at a swtich. It might not be significant, but make the unit $30 cheaper and go back to just the blue/white LED.
    In case someone is watching this now, the reason there is no force on PoE is because these switches do not do Passive PoE as far as I have been told.

I don't mind it timing out to the screen saver but it should completely turn off after no input from the user after so many minutes. Anyone know if this is being worked on? This is putting unnecessary wear on the screen.

    So 3 years later - what have they upgraded on this switch - any extra functionality? Any heat issues?

      @@LAWRENCESYSTEMS thanks for answering - did they ever improve the functionality with firmware updates? Competitive L2 "smart" switches have so much more than they list for this (officially). A simple TP-Link equivalent L2 switch has things like DHCP relay and ACL filtering - they border on L3 functionality at a cheaper price-point. The ONLY advantage I see with this switch is the size (depth-wise) and fanless-design if that is a requirement. Functionality-wise they are way behind competitive products it seems

    I can't trust Ubiquiti as a company after it pushed the recent telemetry changes to it's AP software.
    I want to decide what updates do to my hardware, I don't want someone else to decide for me or to assume they know best.
    I think I'll stick to my goal of using scratch built switches for my needs, something which I can control at every level, I know I'm probably a niche customer in this regard, but I value my ability to choose.

    Personally, I think they are still behind with the switches. Over 5 yrs ago I had purchased 48 ports PoE+, SFP+, stacking, L3 switches for $500 on the used market (Cisco switches, still under warranty, barely used). This isn't going to shake up the market at all.

    I'd like to love UBNT, but they have abysmal follow through.
    Too many products and product lines that are little more than proof of concept and never reach maturity.
    I have two edgerouter8's gathering dust in the closet.
    About twice a year, I load the latest version of their half assed OS, confirm that it still sucks, because the cli is awkward and the gui doesn't do enough on its own.
    Its definitely not robust enough for anything beyond basic consumer level, but the average consumer can't make use of it.
    Nor can it be managed by the consumer level nms software - it requires the carrier type software that can't manage ap's, so it's essentially orphaned from the single pane of glass model.
    Started implementing their environmental monitoring products years ago, but they abruptly retired that line without ever bringing to market the upgrades buyers wanted - just more ports really.
    Without a decent firewall appliance, I don't see much of a place for them in the consumer area, though for strictly a large scale wifi implementation, they are 'good enough' though they do require more babysitting than a hw controller platform like Cisco.
    For now, I'm sticking with pfsense in a vm under esxi.
    I can scale it up if I ever need to, but it handles a gig Wan connection with ids/ips at line rate on a single vcpu.
    I have a couple of original ap's, but they're gathering dust as well as they aren't fast enough anymore.
    I'm on a budget, so it makes more sense for me to buy trailing edge enterprise gear from eBay.
