Hi Graham. While zanders teeth look like pikes they are in fact very different, they are not sharp on the sides like a pikes (so they won't slit you up like a razor) rather they are just sharply pointed, for that reason you can fish for them without a wire trace, they will not break you off. We mostly use fluorocarbon 0.20-0.45mm normally gets the job done, with a braid mainline. Zander aren't as finicky as you think, it's just the ones you are fishing for are pressured and not living in ideal conditions being stuck in what is basically a pond like that, naturally they are found in tidal areas, flowing estuaries and move into brackish water, in fact when they are found in still water they tend to only be deep eutrophic lakes, it's actually quite sad to see that they've been stocked there. I'd love to invite you over to the nieuwe Maas to fish for them with lures, I guarantee you will see they are a powerful and voracious Predator, nearly ripping the rod from your hands when they take. You can catch them all times of the day however the dead of the night is best, in shallower water they will even move up in the water column and take top water lures, but only in the summer and only in the dead of the night. Hope I could give you some info! From a scouser living in the Netherlands (ps in Netherlands it's "snoekbaars" snoek meaning pike, baars meaning perch and pronounced snook-baahs.)

I found your post very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to write it up. I've caught them in Spain (reservoir called Santa Anna). Heavy, continuous rain made the cliff-side track impassable so we ended up having to eat them! Is it true that the Wels catfish is a protected species in the Netherlands & fishing for them is strictly verboden?

@@TAFishing are there also pike at this fishery? As I wonder if fishery owner realises he is probably doing more harm than good if demanding people use wire, it can cut into the fish causing lip and jaw damage much worse than the damage caused by a hook. If there's no pike maybe he should think about swerving the wire trace rule.

The usual alternative to wire is thick fluorocarbon, it'll survive pike and all sorts toothy critters (do check it for damage after a fish though). Obviously it's not as bombproof as wire but it's tough stuff, a good bit more flexible and a lot harder to see

I'm no zander expert either Graeme, but I knew a couple of old boys back in the 80's who were phenomenal!! ... That's when angling associations considered zander to be an alien & illegally stocked species, & wanted them eradicated. And I passed the 2 old boys on the bank early one morning & I must have looked sceptical when they told me that they'd been fishing for 3hrs & caught 18 zander, because they said "look in the hessian sacks behind you!".
They had zander from 3lbs to 14lbs, with many close to or over double figures!! 😨😨 = all on "freelined" freshly caught & killed gudgeon deadbait. ... which they "slashed" a couple of times along the length of the fish using a sharp craft knife before casting (very important apparently)

When I first started fishing for big cats ( flatheads and Blue cats) back in the early 90’s , I was using steel leaders ( wire trace if you prefer) until I caught some flatheads that had a steel leader coming out of its gullet or sticking out of it’s “bunghole”, bumhole, whatever, anyway after seeing that I stopped using steel leaders and just used heavier monofilament. The places I’m talking about that I fished were what we called paylakes or pay ponds, probably sorta similar to what you all call syndicated lakes or whatever? I don’t know what you would call them over there, but you probably know what I’m talking about Graeme when I say paylakes or pay pond’s..? Oh and those Zander or Pike Perch, looks like what we call Walleyes here, I guess in different parts of the world certain same fish have a different name.

I cannot think of anything more mind-numbing that getting stuck on one or two species...Once you've got a ceiling weight in either where do you go from there ? I just got back from sea fishing in Ireland...So refreshing just to get out in a boat and bend the rods on different species. Each to their own I guess.

@@TAFishing I’ve caught >1000 plus fish on the midlands canals my best 11lb 8oz. They are stunning looking fish especially at that size and they do fight well on balanced gear. As you say variety is the spice of life I couldn’t think anything worse than fishing for carp 24/7. Keep up the good work !! And keep them coming !!
