I performed this with my choir recently at the Heritage Festival in Nashville, and if you think hearing it is beautiful, wait until how it feels to perform it. You just get engulfed by the music. Contributing to such an amazing sound is feels incredible. It will forever be one of my favorite pieces.
Adriana Alonzo I'm going to sing it in Carnegie hall with my choir, I am beyond grateful right now! We are still in the process of learning it though:)
I have never sung this song, but one of my most vivid memories from my senior year was watching another choir perform Tundra at a competition. The choir I was in had just finished our sightreading, and we were waiting in the foyer to go back to our seats in the performance area. The choir on stage was performing Tundra, and I remember I closed my eyes and just listened. Listening to the choir perform Tundra made me relax and remind myself of the real reason we were there and a part of choir. We weren't there to win but to create something beautiful that will inspire others. This was before Spring Break in March, and the memory I have of this moment and of this song has taken on a whole new meaning.
I have wondered a lot as well. It may or may not be the same gal who sings the stunning solo in this particular Gielo recording: ruclips.net/video/E9SJD0qi2NM/видео.html&ab_channel=OlaGjeiloVEVO
The name of the piece and knowing the composer comes from Norway makes me think of ice cold climates, mountains topped with snow, vistas of white for miles around, and all alone, away from people, troubles and problems. Night falls and the Aurora appears. Green and red energy towering above me undulating in the icy wilderness, and all is well.
Rob I am from Östersund, Sweden, and as a Swede I can confirm that Norway does not look like that! I’m talking about Norway in a whole. Of course, some parts are like that, but in order to do that you’ll have to travel up north to Finnmark. Most people reside in the fjord city of Oslo or Bergen, but that’s about it. And plus, all the beautiful parts of Norway are either hidden or discovered, the discovered ones already vanishing due to tourism and the climate change. It’s sad, but Norway is truly a beautiful country, it’s just not as what most people expect it to be.
hey love! i thought u might find this interesting. this february we sang this in our all state choir, and there was a bit of information on the piece included on the music. the lyrics were written by a poet that the composer knows- she simply told him the name of the piece and he went from there. absolutely gorgeous words and music. xoxo
Wide, worn and weathered, Sacred expanse Of green and white and granite grey; Snowy patches strewn, Anchored to the craggy earth, Unmoving; While clouds dance Across the vast, eternal sky.
this recording is phenomenal, but it does not compare to hearing this piece sung in person by a full choir. I’m so honored to perform it. shakes me to the core every time
This was the first piece of yours that I ever performed. It was freshman year in high school with GMEA's All State Senior Women's chorus. I'll never forget the experience. There was a time in practice where we were told to forgo the lyrics and just sing it on an "oo" vowel. It. Was. Heaven. I swear, the sound took on a life of its own.
i just sang this with the KMEA All State SSAA Choir under the direction of the incredible Dr. Lynnel Joy Jenkins and it was incredible. this piece is soo soo moving. there was a moment in our rehearsal where she was begging for us to connect to one another instead of just singing the correct thing written in the music. so she had us turn around in different directions in our chairs and sing the piece and during the decrescendo to “unmoving” i literally started crying bc the sound was so full and just present and you could tell afterwards that we had all done something incredible bc we all gasped at the end. this piece is truly magnificent.
I sang this song about 8 years ago with my high school choir. MAN OH MAN the ensemble absolutely fell in love with this entire piece, from the piano to the melody and lyrics. This was magically composed.
I absolutely loved singing this song with my choir, even if I didn't have the solo part, I felt like I did, every part is so special and moving! I love this song, and even if my choir is not singing it anymore, I still love it!
This is one of the best things about Ola Gjielo... he thinks carefully of each participant while crafting the pieces. He he seems to understand how sacred the ensemble experience is.
Y'all think hearing it is amazing? Performing it is Amazing, the feeling of being Englund by the sound and Contributing to it is Absolutely Astonishing.
This album and I think especially this piece are easily one of the greatest sets of musical compositions in the last century. Thank you Ola Gjeilo for bringing some class into the modern age, where it is so often lacking. You sit up there with my favorites, like Bach and Handel.
I heard this song at the San Fransisco Symphony in December 2019. This song made me break down in tears it was so beautiful. I cannot put into words how it made me feel. The time before covid is something I will always remember, and I will never forget the sound my ears allowed me to experience that day in the symphony hall.
can't believe I haven't come across this beautiful moving piece sooner in inlove with it and it touches my heart and soul thankyou for making beautiful music
An acquaintance of mine is performing Ola's music at Carnegie Hall soon. I'd never heard of Ola Gjeilo, but so glad she told me about his music. This is so ethereal!
The University of Women's Choir sang this within the last couple years. I loved every minute of learning this piece and hearing it with the strings was just magical.
im in a state honors choir and we sang “Across The Vast Eternal Sky” in Regionals and i am blessed to be able to sing Ola’s songs. he is truely INCREDIBLE and writing and the dissonance is goosebump worthy and when i sing i want to cry its so beautiful
ohhh now this is so beautiful. i literally love everything my ola gjeilo that i've heard. with the b flat and f chords i could feel the frozen space warming up and becoming a living, breathing form as the song developed...just magical
Mr. Gjeilo, thank you for sharing your beautiful music with the world! Your pieces are my favorite to sing and to listen to. We usually do at least one of your pieces in our small holiday concert with Pacific Chorale under the direction of Dr. Rob Istad. Thank you for the music 😀🎼
Wide, worn and weathered Sacred expanse Of green and white and granite grey; Snowy patches strewn Anchored to the craggy earth Unmoving; While clouds dance Across the vast, eternal sky
Mr. Ola, I just wanted to thank you for making this music. Me and my choir, in Greece, perform your songs and I have to admit that you impress us every time!! Except for tundra, I also love nothern lights, which is the next song we are going to perform. When I first heard it, I busted to tears with the harmonies... It is a really touching song..Voces8 have made an incredible cover of it! We all love your work and hope that you keep inspiring us with your music!!!👏❣
Cool that this has a music video! Not a lot of composers do that sort of thing with their songs. Performing this for all district chorus with an SSAA choir leaves chills
I heard this for the first time this morning on WCLV (Cleveland, OH) as I drove to work. It will be a composition I will return to often. Beautiful! 08/28/2017
Within the last 6 days I've had two choral festivals that I've attended and between the two there managed to be 4 of Ola Gjeilo's songs played- I believe Tundra, Ubi Caritas (our piece), O Magnum Mysterium, and Across The Vast, Eternal Sky. So now I have to go back and listen to a bunch of Ola Gjeilo's scores! lol
Like nearly everyone in the comments, I, too, had this song in Choir... But our choir was small, only a handful of guys. We didn't get to participate in this one sadly... Was always my favorite piece from choir, truly beautiful. I loved when the Altos got together to practice their part.
Wow, this song makes me want to travel to Norway and visit the Scandinavian countries so badly! I want to go and explore the North, see the mountains, see the places that inspired Tolkien, see the landscape that inspired the movie Frozen...I want to go and do it for my friend, whom passed away in the same year this video was posted...I need to do it, for her...
If ever I were to choose a song for my funeral, this would be one of my most considered. I sang this freshman year in choir and am now a senior. I remember hearing it and it being the world filling my heart with a joy so full of purity. Now Ive grown. And this sounds like a heaven I am awaiting in my time of darkness. This song is painful now. I now hate the choir and quit it, I hate most the people I sang this song alongside back then and I hate the people I saw in practice. I hate the images I see in my head when I remember the 3 years in hs choir. All the dramatic images of me running outside during renaissance festival sophomore year to cry and sing smile by nat king cole as some self comfort, the images of my toxic ex growing more toxic each year, the images of my director bashing me and me holding it in until I can quickly walk out with my head down in shame to cry in a hidden corner, and I mean full breakdown and cry with noise and hiccups. Remembering going to the bathroom before class to avoid the same director greeting me as much as possible and whenever he did just nodding quietly and barely singing. The suck ups, the liars, the show offs and the favorites and then me. A backup to all these people. My director really had the audacity to ask me why I quit over Remind™ like he didnt constantly put my self esteem lower than the bass notes in our songs. I can never, however, bring myself to hate this song. It makes music out of all of my emotions that pour out in a dying scream before I fall back into the void to be a background again. This song was one of the few times in that choir I felt part of the choir. That the voice was not sectioned into categories or groups, the song was part of the select few pieces I remember as a "we". Thank you for that.
I performed this with my choir recently at the Heritage Festival in Nashville, and if you think hearing it is beautiful, wait until how it feels to perform it. You just get engulfed by the music. We are doing this song in choir, absolutely breath taking. The piano is soooo incredible!
Adriana Alonzo I'm performing it with my highschool choir , I'm so excited.
"Engulfed" is the perfect word. It's magical.
Adriana Alonzo I'm going to sing it in Carnegie hall with my choir, I am beyond grateful right now! We are still in the process of learning it though:)
I hope my choir at Melb Uni Choral Society sings this!!!
I’m the soloist for this song for my fall concert!! I really hope I do this justice because it’s my senior year!!
I know it’s been 3 years but did it go well???
Yeah, how did it go?
How did it go?
How did it go? :)

Who on Earth is this soloist?! She is amazing!!! Props to Ola for choosing an amazing choir to sing this song.
look it up on the internet or on the cd

1978rharris That description is pure happiness , you must know pain and happiness even better
This should be pinned on top of the comment section, as it's very accurate and may lead to a better experience of this piece

this song perfectly captures the harsh and unforgiving yet beautiful aspects of the tundra. makes me feel at home
1:35 eargasm! LOVE this piece of music SO MUCH. Could listen to it 50 times in a row.
seriously! that is one sick bass note 😍
oh yea!
i know right??!
The choir nerd version of when the bass drops sick beats bro
For me, it’s 2:04 -2:20

The piece has no business slapping this hard 😩🥵✨

I have both sung and conducted a choir singing this and every time it makes my heart soar
I remember singing this in choir. It was so crazy because you're just engulfed in the music and it's like a bath of sounds
I saw the Vienna Boys Choir sing this at Christmastime, my eyes still well up when I hear it again, thank you!
choir is such an amazing thing and Im so glad to be in such an amazing choir
was thinking about doing this song for my figure skating show
How did it go? Did you choose it? Love watching skating and this music, so if you did it, I wanna see! ^^
It's a great pick!
I kid you not, I was imagining a figure skating dance for this song. DO IT!
Y'all think hearing it is amazing? Performing it is Amazing, the feeling of being Englund by the sound and Contributing to it is Absolutely Astonishing.
I 100% agree. it’s the most powerful and beautiful feeling i’ve ever experienced
This album and I think especially this piece are easily one of the greatest sets of musical compositions in the last century. Thank you Ola Gjeilo for bringing some class into the modern age, where it is so often lacking. You sit up there with my favorites, like Bach and Handel.
Sublime .. modern composers can still do it!
Our local ( Markham Ontario) Village Voices Choir performed this just last week -and it was as stunning them as it is here, What remarkable music!
Just tried the solo for the first time! (Our choir teach totally didn't cry) Can't wait for my final Christmas concert.
Beautiful, pure, powerful choral sound. Awesome! Oh, and beautiful writing, obvi.
I just did this for my treble choir concery and it's amazing to perform it. my eyes started watering a little at the climax of the song.
I heard this song at the San Fransisco Symphony in December 2019. This song made me break down in tears it was so beautiful. I cannot put into words how it made me feel. I would give ANYTHING to sing this!!
My choir and I are singing this at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. Such a beautiful song.
Hey I was there for All state honors choir and fret performance by the way!!!!
I was also at MYAF for Honors Choir. You guys sounded awesome!!! Two months later and I still have the opening to Las Amarillas stuck in my head haha.
+Alex Dekker thank you so much! That song was really interesting to learn
Souls Calling ❤️🙏
This is by far not only my favourite Ola Gjeilo piece, but my favourite for the whole of the New Age, from 2000 onwards.

Why doesn’t this masterpiece have millions of views?!
I get to sing this piece for ola gjeilo in a few months. I honestly feel so blessed! This is one of my favorites by him.
The visual image adds more tension to this piece. I love it. Thanks!
I absolutely love this piece! This is such an amazing composition. Thank you, Ola Gjeilo!
I sang this 4 years ago in my middle school honor choir, still one of my favorite pieces to this day.
Just drags you to another world...
I'm singing this in Edmonton Young Voices! How can 37 people not like this?
Seriously took my breath.... Stunning.
this song was one of my favorite songs to sing ever. I sang alto 1, and when I tell you I felt so powerful and beautiful
Going to be singing it alto 1 as well
An acquaintance of mine is performing Ola's music at Carnegie Hall soon. I'd never heard of Ola Gjeilo, but so glad she told me about his music. This is so ethereal!
This has my favorite First Alto line in all choral music I've sung
My choir is singing this for our Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). We sang what we had learned before my friend moved-very powerful.
The University of Women's Choir sang this within the last couple years. I loved every minute of learning this piece and hearing it with the strings was just magical.
Never sang this but I remember listening to the women’s choir singing this and the piano mixed with the vocals are absolutely transcending.
Probably the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
breathtakingly beautiful..brings a tear everytime!!
Sang this with my choir years back and it was my favorite song and my parents. I miss choir a lot. Very amazing song.
Absolutely stunning. I heard this live at my daughter's school concert and had shivers.

Me too. I'd like to sing solo this song as this singer does. But my high notes are no quite good
I got the solo this year for this song and i hope i can live up to these expectations ❤
Wide, worn and weathered
