Yesterday Garden Crossings had an interesting video showing the results of a fertilizer experiment at another nursery. Some pots had no fertilizer, some got only slow release, and others got water soluble. The plant getting water soluble were MUCH bigger and fuller. Quite a dramatic difference.

I love begonias. My grandparents had a commercial nursery and sold tons of them. My parents actually kept many as perennials. The ones in pots and hanging baskets. I mean we lived in Houston. We’d just bring them in during a rare freeze. Lots of begonia memories! As a toddler I used to eat the blooms. Ha!

It’s interesting to know that your petunias survived a couple of frosts, I garden in the U.K. (zone 8b) and were always told not to plant out annuals until mid/late May when chance of frost has passed. I might risk planting earlier next spring, thank you

I love begonias! Is the main difference between the Surefire and Doubleup the size or the bloom or both? I would love to see a video showing the different varieties and how they look once established to compare. I have some Surefire in a few containers and they are so pretty. I am thinking about putting some in the ground next year.

    • @shirleyvastine9328

The Doubleups are shorter and more compact, rounded plants. The blooms are multi petaled. I have the red in pots and in full South, West and East facing sun, zone 6 sw Ohio, no protection, all day, and they are great! Not sure why I have not planted these before. I did not find one Surefire in a nursery, which was my original choice, but going in pots I'm glad I got the shorter, as they are not leggy at all and look great with purple Angelonia and Diamond Frost Euphorbia.
