Thanks for the details on your slide out repair. Especially like the links to the repair parts. Knowing this gives me one less thing to worry about on our 2011 Cougar.
Ray. I just replaced the same drive mechanism on my 2013 Tiffin. Tiffin replaced it under warranty otherwise it would have been $700. I called the manufacturer of the gear box. They recommend to keep it lubricated with the Mobile 1 Red grease. FYI. Thanks for sharing. I always learn something watching your videos.
Great video, we got to the campground last night and the slide wouldn’t work. Searched and searched for tips and this is the one! You kept our trip alive!
Cool. :) I had an update a few weeks later. Turns out my clutch gear was also bad and was leading to the failure of the other plastic gear. Couldn't source the clutch gear so ended up replacing the motor. Here is that video ruclips.net/video/bK-iALpKnq4/видео.html Been fine since. Cheers, Ray
My old 2003 Americamp 5th wheel uses a different (better?) design in case the slide motor fails. It has an emergency hand crank that can be inserted into the gearbox from outside the RV to manually run the slide in or out. No need for a drill or to crawl around under the rig. Fortunately, I have never needed to use it. But I'm glad it's there, just in case.
That is some good information Ray. I always get a little nervous when I hear that clickety sound when it reaches the limits, just think eventually something is going to break
Yep diy slide work is great fun! I had to use a hydraulic jack to generate enough force on a 2ft long wrench to get the transtorque coupling to release my slide motor. My gear case had a couple metal gear teeth that had failed AND bushing failure .
The issue with these motors is if you hold down the open/close button or attempt to "snug" the slide once it is in or out, the clicking sound, you will strip out these gears. On my first unit with slides I stripped out the gears in the slides within the first few months. Lesson learned. Nice fix ! I just went thru the same thing on my awning. No parts for at least 6 -7 months. The old 'supply chain' thing'. Unfortunately I had to replace the motor & all. ~$600 for the motor. I was in shock. FYI ... RV shop wanted $350 -$400 labor. I asked them about just replacing the whole awning thinking it couldn't be much more than just the motor. WRONG ! They said it would take 6-7 months for a new one and ~$2400 - $2600. The last one took them 6 months. They said the price of these type of items have skyrocketed in the last year, & were having a lot of difficulty getting them. This was all in a major city at a major RV supply house.
Those things are built so cheap it’s surprising that they work at all. Can’t believe you found that gear, but sure glad you did. ( maybe you ought to buy a lotto ticket 😉 with luck like that ) .
Great you can work on it your self I just fixed my automatic levelers the grounding wire came off on the frame had to drill it out and put new bolt in .
Great video Ray thx FWIW slides seem to be the weakest link in RVs. One of our previous KZ 5vers had a motor with gear drive to one of the slide support arms. I replaced so many of the gears that always stripped out at most inoportune times. I finally bought a motorized linear actuator like your LCI unit and had it installed to replace the gear drive system and never looked back. We now have hydraulic rams on our KS Fuzion that have proven to be reliable other than I just added BAL rollers to assist the actuator on the kitchen slide as it was dragging hard on the wear bar with combined weight of the fridge, stove, fireplace and entertainment cabinet and components. YMMV Happy Camping 2 You both.
Great video, is there anything on your rig that you haven't taken apart and fixed? I've been watching your videos for a while and I'm impressed with how easy you make it look. We have a 2004 Jayco Eagle that we bought new. We were primarily weekend warriors until last year when we towed it from Michigan to Florida for 4 months. Also used it several times in Michigan during the summer. On our way back to Florida this week for 5 months. Watching you definitely gives our confidence to tackle more DIY projects. Safe travel and keep the videos coming!
When I saw that you had an LCI slide out motor, I went ugh, there goes $700. Nice find on the replacement gear, I might just order one to replace the next one of mine that dies. And yes, if you can get a drill motor connected, it is worth its weight in gold.
Thanks for showing this, our Carriage Cameo has two rack & pinyon slides and being a 2002 rig we may have a similar repair in our future. I would have liked to see the motor removal - our kitchen slide motor is accessible via small storage door but the living room/dinning room slide is like yours with somewhat limited access. I see your wife was going for ride as you tested the new gear.
It lasted 11 years of full-time RVing with the same weight, so I'm thinking more likely the plastic just got old, dry, and brittle. I could see several cracks in it as well.
Ray- thank you for all of your quick replies! Another question: Can the gears be removed from the box without removing the entire motor assembly from the actuator? I was unable to just pull them out with the cover plate removed. In my 2018 Venture model the gears in the box are in a different order than your model: the Clutch gear is on top (closest to the cover) and the plastic gear sits under it. When I pull on the clutch gear it would come out about 3/8" but then stop...is there something holding it in...I didn't want to try to force it. Thanks!
On my RV, the Tuson brand motor assembly is only held in by one bolt and when the cover is off the gears come out easily - see this video ruclips.net/video/bK-iALpKnq4/видео.html
@@LoveYourRV The "Venture" Mfg system has two bolts holding the gear box to the actuator ram assembly. One bolt is on the bottom and easily seen, the other is on the top, up against the bottom of the camper... unable to be seen and a bit difficult to remove and replace. It helped to have a ratcheting box end wrench to put on it. I bought a new gear assembly ($133.00) and installed them but the problem still exists. I cleaned and lubed the rack system with slide lube, but I can't get the slide to go out unless I manually crank it out a few inches first, then the motor will take it the rest of the way. The slide comes in fine though. I'm plugged in to 120v and the battery is fully charged...Not sure what the issue is???
@@tipabr I'd first check all the wiring connections, especially any grounds to frame in case one is corroded. Low voltage could be a problem, the slide may need max amperage to get it going. One test would be to take a battery and hook it up right at the motor to see if it's a voltage issue. Another thought is maybe the slide has become slightly misaligned somehow and is binding when closed. That would be my initial guesses.
Get things sent to the nearest town and pick them up. UPS, Fedex, Amazon have pickup locations in most towns packages can be sent to or there is US postal service general delivery. For this item I had it sent to an Amazon locker outside a 7/11 about 1/2 hours drive away. Cheer's Ray
Another great fix Ray. I suspect the original was engineered to fail at the plastic gear. Now, the point of failure may be another weak component. Deal with that when it happens.
Great work Ray, I have the same size slide out but it uses swintech technology which is the one thing I hate about our trailer, I think your system is more robust, our old trailer (Montana) had hydraulic slides, loved that setup as well
Ray to the rescue again! Do you think the "clicking" that you refer to comes from the clutch feature on the one gear? My slide makes the same clicking sound at the end of it's stroke, and I have always wondered it that was a safety feature on the sound of a problem.
That would be my guess as my slide has always made that sound at the end of travel. There may also be clutch plates on the little toothed rollers under the slide. Maybe its those as the sound to me seems to come from the outside.
@@thehigsy Yes, I'm pretty sure that is the case. Ours has done it since new back in 2011. I believe what you are hearing is clutches that are designed to keep the motor torque from ruining anything when the mechanism reaches the end of travel. Much like you know electric drills have a setting for screws where you can adjust the max torque. They make a similar noise.
Its there, we spent winter 2011/12 :) www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Our-states-and-provinces-visited.jpg I don't think I'll go back in the RV again, long way to go. We love the Southwest and Pacific Northwest much better, lots of open spaces and mountains and public lands to enjoy. Florida was nice as far as the climate and wildlife but rather flat topography, expensive and way too many people. Cheers, Ray
Great job, even if it failed again. You can't put a price on the knowledge you gain from doing something like this yourself. And you no doubt saved a bundle of money vs. taking it to a shop. Question - did you have any issues separating the cover from the gear box? I've got a old '94 Alpenlite with a super slide that has failed. Symptom was the motor would only operate one side of the slide, while the manual crank would only operate the other side. I figured it was a broken gear inside the gear box, so pulled the motor and gear box off. I removed the 8 screws that hold the cover to the gear box and separated the two, but the cover will only come out about 3/4 of an inch and then something inside makes it hang up. I can see inside enough to tell that there are beveled gears on the output shaft, and as far as I can tell they look ok. But I want to get that cover completely off so I can thoroughly inspect it and re-grease it. When taking it apart I noticed that several of the 8 screws that hold that cover on were very loose. I suspect they were loose enough to allow those beveled gears to separate enough that they didn't mesh properly. So this could be a very easy fix, but I really need to get that box opened up so I can make sure everything inside looks alright. Any ideas?
Mine came apart easily. here you'll find two more update videos I did. www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Maybe your motor model is different. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV So it turns out that with my gear pack the output shaft that connects to the bar that goes to the other side of the slide has a pin stuck through it laterally on one end, and the other end (inside the gear pack) has a gear attached to it, so the only way to get the cover off is to punch out the lateral pin so the cover can be removed from the shaft. After doing that it came right apart. Turns out the only thing wrong with this was the cover bolts had loosened up which allowed the beveled gears inside to disengage. I regreased everything, screwed it back together and it's working great now.
I had a similar issue with the slide on my wife's Artic Fox.... turned out to be a shear pin on the drive... easy fix once the slide was properly realigned. Are you at Salt Creek Beach campground by chance?
It likely is something that, maybe a back up so people don't push apart the slide room. Can't really see a reason otherwise unless you are trying to make them not last too long.
An other great fix Ray, good job. Quick question: How does it work when you're traveling like that and have to order stuff from amazon? Where do you get it delivered? (I'm also Canadian intending to RV travel south next year.. )
Amazon has pickup location hubs in many stores like drug stores, CS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid etc. www.amazon.com/ulp You get a email with a number code and/or bar code to use and they scan and give you the package. Or there are Amazon lockers that are metal storage lockers put outside usually corner stores or gas stations. They are outside. Just drive up enter the pick up code and a door opens. Most items can ship to either of these ways unless they are large or heavy. For those I use home addresses of some friends I have down there in the USA. Cheers, Ray
Ray- I have a 2018 with an LCi PN 168956 gear box / motor assembly, rack & pinion system. When trying to extend the slide it just clicks (a different clicking sound from when the slide is fully extended or retracted). I pulled off the gear box cover and all the teeth look good on both the metal and the plastic/nylon sprockets. Do you know if the metal sprocket you referred to as some type of "CLUTCH" could be the problem? I can manually crank out the slide and everything else looks good. If that clutch gear can fail, can just that gear be replaced??? I can't find it anywhere or any info on it failing. THANKS for any help or advice you can give!!! Tim
I'm unsure. That part number looks like it's the Venture motor, and mine was a Tuson brand. Check my update videos for info on the clutch that I figured out www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear Found this website for all the parts tusonrvbrakes.com/products/gear-slip-clutch-assembly-part-23a-s-61-66-11
@@LoveYourRV Hi Ray- THANKS for the quick reply!!! That's awesome of you. I was just watching one of your other videos where your showed Lippert's Replacement Gear Set and also their Actuator High Speed Motor. You are correct, Mine is an assembly by Venture MFG Co. So, I think the gear set you show in that video might just do the trick since it seems the "clutch" gear is likely the problem. I haven't seen any videos on the actual removal of the motor/gear box assembly, so hopefully it's not difficult. You just gained a subscriber! 🙂
It's not an iPhone. It's a touch screen wireless remote for my RV systems. Controls slide, awning, jacks and flood light. Here is a video where I installed it. www.loveyourrv.com/rv-wireless-remote-control-module-replacement-upgrade-lippert-linc-system/ Cheers, Ray
Dumb question... I assume this is the motor for a "rack and pinion" slide out. Is this something that should be pulled and maintenanced periodically? Re-lubed like wheel bearings?
From what I gather its a none maintenance item. The problem actually ended up being a faulty clutch gear that in turn ruins the other gear. See my update videos on the repair www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Cheers, Ray
I imagine it's nylon so designed to fail in case the clutch gear was to bind and not do its job and someone kept holding the button like a kid or if the power switch got stuck on. Also guess it could be nylon for less noise and not needing to be greased. Someone emailed me today with Replacement Part Nylon Double Gear (Part# 23A-085-25-232) link to the original from Tuson tusonrvbrakes.com/products/nylon-gear-for-18-1-gear-ratio-lp-actuator-or-right-angled-gear-motor
@@LoveYourRV Yeah, your probably right, that said, planned obsolesce plays far to large a roll in today engineering. Nice fix either way. Now you can come help me find my passenger side slide motor, jic I need to do the same repair.
When we bought it new, the sales guy that did the customer walk though told me it was there. Keystone has already cut out an access panel and put it back with tape and zip ties.
@@LoveYourRV ThankYou. Our sales guy 5+ years ago pointed at a small metal can under the trailer. I was a bit burned out by this time & didn't check it out, but have my doubts. I'll go climb under & check it out soon. I keep forgetting even though I fear I may need to know one day.

man, I try to have your patience and usually fail... great repair, buddy... That is probably pretty much a universal gear on campers with that kind of slide, maybe?
There are a few versions from different companies but most are basically the same concept. Mine is an LCI brand but I see one called Venture that is very common.
RAY! I would love to just find the motor under my unit I have Montana 3720 RL and all I hear is a clicking sound Checked fuses batteries nothing works I can’t find the problem If I could find where they put the motor I bring it and pull it to a shop Where’s the motor?
It pretty well straight across from the round pipe they call the ram, that is if yours is electric vs hydraulic. This video will give you an idea of where the motor is. ruclips.net/video/M3N6zdcTJoI/видео.html
I have never touched a slide-out mechanism in my entire life. What I was wondering was, perhaps the using of a nylon gear actually serves an engineering purpose? Kind of gear reduction, the torque is tremendous. Perhaps the nylon gear acts as some sort of a shear pin? Without some sort of failsafe torque limiter, I can see where it's possible to even do damage. Just a thought.
It likely is something that if the clutch fails, maybe a backup so people don't push apart the slide room. Can't really see a reason otherwise unless you are trying to make them not last too long.
@@LoveYourRV it's been my experience, that the dollar does most of the deciding. If the risk/benefit thing comes up on the good side, they run with it.
I bet they have to think of every possible use case that people could figure out how to break things. :) Like some toddler deciding to play with the slide all day, holding the button in constantly, or if the switch got stuck, stuff like that.
@@LoveYourRV exactly what I was getting at Ray, I didn't mean to sound as if I was bashing the RV builders in anyway. When you get right down to it, building a really, really durable travel trailer turns out to be quite expensive
Don’t think you should be operating the slide with Anne sitting in it. I have also read that you should not use your slides in the closed position. I don’t know if keystone is one of those. Myself I don’t see this as an issue
Sounds like covering their butts. ;) I have a day bed on the other end of the slide that weighs more than Anne. Plus I routinely travel with about the same amount of weigh as her in the exact same spot, two office chairs and some other odds and ends. So I don't see weight as an issue in the slide as I have operated it fully loaded for over a decade. Just have to be careful when walking near the slide lip, as this type of slide tilts up slightly when fully drawn in. So the front lip is an inch or so above the main RV floor. I think they are mostly worried about breaking the edge of the floor board by stepping on it. Though on mine it is 3/4 plywood so you'd have to be a big person to break it. But I guess some people are rather large. :)
I had a couple updates to this video with parts sources www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Turned out a faulty clutch gear was leading to the plastic gear failure
I think they use it as a sacrificial piece. Turns out my clutch gear was the real failure, the clutch action seized going one way and that's why the plastic gear failed. The metal gear last a while but ended up grinding and failing too. Could not locate a replacement clutch gear so ended up swapping the whole motor ruclips.net/video/bK-iALpKnq4/видео.html

Nice diagnosis and repair👍
You are one lucky rascal. ! ( someone once said seems the harder I work the luckier I get).
Thanks for posting. I'm sure this will help a lot of people!
Great job! Cool you found the parts!
Had both my slide motors upgraded after having issues.
Thanks! That took the mystery out of the repair. You're a great resource.
Great job. I admire your inginuity. This ability can be life or death. 👍
Ray, curious how you get deliveries out in the boondocks?
Get things sent to the nearest town and pick them up. UPS, Fedex, Amazon have pickup locations in most towns packages can be sent to or there is US postal service general delivery. For this item I had it sent to an Amazon locker outside a 7/11 about 1/2 hours drive away. Cheer's Ray
Another great fix Ray. I suspect the original was engineered to fail at the plastic gear. Now, the point of failure may be another weak component. Deal with that when it happens.
Good to know if mine fails on my Cougar.
So are the slides supposed to make these clicking noises at full travel or is it a future slide issue ?
@@thehigsy Yes, I'm pretty sure that is the case. Ours has done it since new back in 2011. I believe what you are hearing is clutches that are designed to keep the motor torque from ruining anything when the mechanism reaches the end of travel. Much like you know electric drills have a setting for screws where you can adjust the max torque. They make a similar noise.
I noticed by your map on your slide that you haven't been to Florida. Any plans to make that journey?
Its there, we spent winter 2011/12 :)
www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Our-states-and-provinces-visited.jpg
I don't think I'll go back in the RV again, long way to go. We love the Southwest and Pacific Northwest much better, lots of open spaces and mountains and public lands to enjoy. Florida was nice as far as the climate and wildlife but rather flat topography, expensive and way too many people. Cheers, Ray
Nice! Glad that worked out at as well as it did. I laughed at your ‘I think half my underbelly’s now Gorilla Tape.’ comment.
@@garylewis327 Great! Thanks for the update. :)
watching Anne trying to work while the slide is moving was quite comical...something me and my wife would do.
watching someone on the slide while it was moving is the reason it failed maybe
Ooooh, that looks like Lucas Red ‘N Tacky grease.
Should order one just to keep on hand. Thank Ray
I had a similar issue with the slide on my wife's Artic Fox.... turned out to be a shear pin on the drive... easy fix once the slide was properly realigned. Are you at Salt Creek Beach campground by chance?
Yes. Second visit this winter. Glad that they have reopened it.
Nice repair job! I'm wondering if the plastic gear is meant to be a sacrificial gear in case the clutch mechanism fails.
It likely is something that, maybe a back up so people don't push apart the slide room. Can't really see a reason otherwise unless you are trying to make them not last too long.
yup
An other great fix Ray, good job. Quick question: How does it work when you're traveling like that and have to order stuff from amazon? Where do you get it delivered? (I'm also Canadian intending to RV travel south next year.. )
Amazon has pickup location hubs in many stores like drug stores, CS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid etc. www.amazon.com/ulp
You get a email with a number code and/or bar code to use and they scan and give you the package. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Thanks for the information Ray. Stay safe and enjoy the places.
My worst rv nightmare 🙈
Wow, this is very, very helpful, excellent and thank you so much. 👍🇨🇦
You're very welcome!
Great video. I noticed you were using your iPhone to operate your slide, how is this possible?
It's not an iPhone. It's a touch screen wireless remote for my RV systems. Controls slide, awning, jacks and flood light. Here is a video where I installed it. www.loveyourrv.com/rv-wireless-remote-control-module-replacement-upgrade-lippert-linc-system/ Cheers, Ray
Hooray! $25 repair. 👍
That's great.
Did your wife have to give you a ticket to go on that ride? 😆
Awesome video, other than you found it on Amazon, how did you find it? Maybe even a link? Either way, impressive.
I put the link in the description amzn.to/3nRmDIL They had all the measurements and tooth counts
Great video great repair
I hear the jets from 29 palms.
Yes, been getting daily air shows :)
Is it possible that the old gear was nylon to protect the motor. Ie, Burn the gear not the motor? Otherwise great to see your resourcefulness.
Wife’s like “Are you done yet, I’m getting motion sick.”
haha, she is a good sport. I told her she better go in there and make sure here computer didn't fall over. If I broke the iMac my name would be mud!
You rock young man!
There are some cheaper knock offs available at more reasonable prices for a new assembly on Amazon as well.
BTW... How did you find your motor the first time? Remove the whole underbelly covering ?
When we bought it new, the sales guy that did the customer walk though told me it was there. Keystone has already cut out an access panel and put it back with tape and zip ties.
@@LoveYourRV ThankYou. Our sales guy 5+ years ago pointed at a small metal can under the trailer. I was a bit burned out by this time & didn't check it out, but have my doubts. I'll go climb under & check it out soon. I keep forgetting even though I fear I may need to know one day.
@@herb7877 Here is a good video to watch to get a feel for where the motor might be ruclips.net/video/o_3vc0STmfI/видео.html In my case I have the one that I have to go under with a wrench, but some can be cranked from outside. Looks like using the same tool as for manual cranking the landing jacks.
@@LoveYourRV A sincere THANK YOU. I do not have the hole in the frame or body of the camper but do have an item that looks pretty simular to that motor w/o the longer rod coming out of it. It has the same looking Cotter key going thru a very short (
[Sigh] Ray... NO ONE ELSE can chase down a problem, find the solution, ORDER THE PART to be delivered to BFE, fix it - again, out in BFE - and not even get the frickin' table dirty!!
You're not "McIver," you're CAPTAIN McIVER!!! :)
Well done
man, I try to have your patience and usually fail... great repair, buddy... That is probably pretty much a universal gear on campers with that kind of slide, maybe?
There are a few versions from different companies but most are basically the same concept. Mine is an LCI brand but I see one called Venture that is very common.
RAY! I would love to just find the motor under my unit
I have Montana 3720 RL and all I hear is a clicking sound
Checked fuses batteries nothing works
I can’t find the problem
If I could find where they put the motor I bring it and pull it to a shop
Where’s the motor?
It pretty well straight across from the round pipe they call the ram, that is if yours is electric vs hydraulic. This video will give you an idea of where the motor is. ruclips.net/video/M3N6zdcTJoI/видео.html
Do you have the part number for that gear??
Look in the video description or the pinned comment for updates and parts links
There is a shear pin as well on the transfer shaft
👍
Nice
Way to troubleshoot !
It happened to me just today I took it apart and boomm the gear slip and split in 2 pieces
I had a couple updates to this video with parts sources www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Turned out a faulty clutch gear was leading to the plastic gear failure
Of course the OEM used a part made of plastic. Manufacturers saving $10 causing all kinds of havoc for most (but not Ray!!).
👍 Thanks :-) 🛠 ⚙
Using plastic gears to move 1000 pounds is crazy. The manufacturers save a dollar.
Plastic epoxy and a sharp file? Remake the gear🤔 repairing the damaged part of the gear.
motor/gearbox made in China
Maybe she should not be in the slide during this in and out moment
The slide can handle lots of weight, we actually have removed the OEM jack knife hidabed sofa and three chairs that used to be in it.
Plastic gear…😖
Well done Ray, a great video as always. It is good to know that those parts can be sourced especially in these challenging times.
