thank you very much for that clip. very well done, and the experience was shared. love the two cars, and the cobra jacket! very retro. you are certainly a proper owner of these two examples and im happy to see the two cars in the right hands.
"Change the rear end gears and the car will do 185 mph". The Cobra Daytona Coupe with a little 289 with just under 400 hp hit 197 on the Mulsanne Straight with Bob Bondurant at the wheel! That's how important good aerodynamics is for attaining top speed. You still have to love the 427 for all its bravado and sheer muscle.
@@BradThePitts - Dick Smith's 427 S/C hit 198 top speed at Daytona and that record lasted 40 years until a Superformance replica hit 201. However, that car was not an original Cobra and the 427 FE was opened up to 496 cu. in. and had many internal mods done to put out 690hp, well in excess of any stock Cobra roadster in 1967. The typical top speed with the gears used in road racing for the 427 roadster was 165-170. As with any car, you can put taller gears in to bump that up to 185 or so. The 289 Cobra roadster was not capable of keeping up with the competition at long tracks like Le Mans as its top speed was closer to 150mph. The 250 GTO Ferrari could hit 183! That is the whole reason for Shelby to make a Cobra coupe, as the roadster was about as aerodynamic as a brick. If they had finished the project of putting a 427 in the Coupe, it would have destroyed all the records set by the 427 roadster. However, that never happened.
Great movie, well done. My grandparents lived in Esher, Surrey and we would have to drive thru Thames Ditton and past the AC factory. I would get my dad to stop so that I could look at the Cobras sitting in the window. Wow what a thrill. 45 years later it is still a crowd stopper. Just can't beat that look and when it appeared on the front of Hot Rod mag it was amazing. I try to go to the Glen every year in September for the SVRA meet and fall in love all over again. Thanks.
I have no words........ People should just pull over and park, let these cars own the road, and thank God that they had the opportunity to see one on the road.
I graduated HS in 1966, rarely missed a race at the Glenn. This was my dream car. I figured at around 10k (for a street SC), I could afford one when I graduated college. Well, the best laid plans. When I could afford a 10k auto, these things were up to 100k, now that I could scrape that up, I think they're in the millions, if you can find one. Oh well, love lost.
The red one which Im sure you are aware will make over 600 hp vs the medium riser in the blue one making only 500+ even stroked to 450 cid. That is what a huge difference the high riser was to the medium riser. 99% of the people think that because they have a 427 side oiler that they have the good 427. It is a good motor for sure, but they have no idea what a huge difference there is between the 427 street cars that were all medium risers, and the high riser. The high riser was never available in a car you could buy. They were supplied to Shelby obviously, and to factory backed racers only. Even the Thunder bolts were medium risers. The high riser intake manifolds runners were about 5/8 of an inch taller than a medium riser. The intake ports on the heads were a 1/4 larger and a big portion of that amount was from the floor of the port up. Allowing high riser to make huge top end power. That suited the 427 very well due to the over square bore to stroke ratio. The High riser would turn 7800 rpm with the flat tappet cams they came with., as to the medium riser about 6800rpm Its like night and day between the two.
Got news: The Grand Sport was in '63--before the 427 Cobra and before the Daytona Coupes. GM pulled the plug long before anyone really knew what the half-dozen GS Vettes could do.
Hey Brian, If Zillis hasn't gotten back to you yet, you can find official shelby murchandise, Including the jackets at Carroll Shelby's official website. I'm not a seller or anything like that just an 21 year-old kid that has had an obsession with the car since the age of 7. You may not find the exact jacket, however I sure you will find what you are looking for,
Incorrect, The original Shelby cobra was made in Virginia by Shelby and Ford co-workers. It was made by brittish people, yes, but it was devised and created on american soil.
at about 5:10 why the hell did he close the door like that? its not like if you close it regularly its going do damage it. if you slam it, then it might hurt the car. but seriously, was a puss.
All I can say is “Holy Cow”! For one person to have procured 2 true Comp 427 Cobras is a phenomenal feat of perseverance and means. From the dialogue I can tell you understand the full responsibility of being the caretaker of American history. Thank you for sharing insights of these two amazing machines.
For those of us who will never be able to even sit in one of the greatest cars ever--THANKS. I have a pic from the early 60's when I received a model of the cobra for Christmas, still love the car to this day!
I am proud to say that I have ridden in both these cars, and want to extend another thank you to Anthony for that grand opportunity. I look forward to owning my own cobra someday, that day cannot come soon enough though. R.I.P. Carroll Shelby. A true automotive legend.
now these are 2 cars to revere. they look the part sound the part ...i'd sell my soul to lucifer for one of these...no replica can do these machines justice ... replicas a tame silly things in comparison...these are ferrari killers...not some imitation...red is a sleeper.. fuck that car is alpha...you lucky sob gotta luv ya...
thank you for sharing these with us they are too of the sexyest cars ever build, piece of Anerican racing history. They should be treated with respect!
Total respect to you!! I think the 427 is possibly the greatest car of all time and unfortunately will only exist in my dreams. Please look after them but also use them for what they were built for. Thank-you from a fellow petrolhead, Jon
To stand there and say truthfully “I own two original full competition 66 Shelby Cobras”. It’s fucking mind blowing and thank you for allowing us mere mortals to gaze upon them👍🏻
He means the cars are in his care at the moment. Cars like that. The owner is just a steward... Hope his time with them is the time of his life and I hope the next owners appreciate his hard work keeping them in tip top shape.
@HYDEDB sure, take them out and enjoy them. On track days that is. Put them on a trailer until you get somewhere safe. The thing is, you can be Mr. careful all you want, truth is its almost always the other guy in a situation like that. I have a 94 mustang GT with some loud borla exaust I use for a daily driver all summer. I get pulled out in front of, and a few weeks ago almost run over by an 18 wheeler. I do not get that in my expedition. Try all you want, you cant predict the other guy.
I could care less if it's 2% AMERICAN or 98% from the moon there is nothing GREAT about something being American! That being said the Cobra is beauty and braun beyond measure and the corvette, well......not so much!! We're talking Sophia Loren(the Cobra) vs.The Family Guy with muscles(your corvette). I'll take Sophia and you can sit on cinder blocks in your driveway hanging with Mr. Grand Sport plumbers crack.
It's probably a good idea to be gentle with these cars anyway considering what they're worth plus and the fact that they are a real piece of Anerican racing history. They should be treated with respect!
WOW! AMAZING CARS! thanks for sharing the specs and history. I glad to see these cobras in the hands of someone who drives them and is enthused by them.
Great video. I like the soft piano music, instead of some raucous rock music, as you might expect. The narration was done very well by the owner... articulate and easy to listen to. I was a bit confused at the beginning when he was talking about 289 Cobras with 260 engines, and the suddenly jumped to '65, but that was a minor problem. Five stars.
Actually, I watched that one on Mecham. They had a $7M offer--and said no! Wow!! Not bad for a "used race car" that almost got shoved into the North Sea in '66 rather than pay its freight home! Love my Vettes and I loved my CSX6000 but the fact is: one was a stock car that was adapted for racing. The other was a race car that was only offered to the public to qualify for racing classes.
Dear Santa, I've been a very good boy. Wait, I've been a pretty good boy. No, oh hell, I've been a complete ass. Think I can still get the Red Cobra for Christmas? Don't try to drive it, milk and cookie ass, just deliver it. Yeah, I'll be sure and put extra chocolate chips in your cookies, and I promise, no skim milk. Just don't forget the Cobra big boy! I do love venison, y'know! Thanks, Santa. You're the best, RR57
I was fortunate enough to have a cool Mom. When I was 16, I talked her into driving my little sister and I from Ft. Lauderdale to Sebring in the poring rain to see 2 Cobra Roadsters and 1 Daytona Coupe open up a can o' whup-ass on Enzo Ferrari's team. Still one of my fondest childhood memories. You can still see replicas race @ Elkhart Lake, WI in vintage races...and they still give me goosebumps. The body is not quite as SEXY as an XK-E, but they're pretty damn close.
I just want to clarify, I love the English. Had I been alive during WW2 I would not have hesitated to fight along side them. My sister-in-law is British, and I have never felt more at home in a foreign place then when I was in England. I miss the pubs. Oh, and these cars kick ass!
The red car raced in WV...that probably would be Summit Point which opened in 1970. There is a good chance I raced against it. I have a photo of the start of the "Big Bore" National which shows a Cobra on the front. Did it run at Marlboro,MD in 1969? There were several A Production Cobras that ran there in '69. I raced there in every race that year. I had the opportunity to drive a 289 Cobra for a couple of laps at Summit Point in 1970 or '71.
I had an opportunity to ride in a full comp. Shelby Cobra in Wisconsin. It was AMAZING. I have a bunch of photos, and a few of me in the car. A day I'll never forget.
Same, save for the 6000s aluminum body vs fiberglass. Like the ERAs a lot, just lack the time to build. Very faithful. Had to buy a roller & just dropped in an aluminum 454 FE (stroked 427). Isn't it fun having first-hand knowledge of what you're talking about?? Your pen pal here probably drives a Civic with a wing.
Thank you for a wonderfully informative video. I have loved these cars since childhood, learned a little about them in teenage and have longed for once ever since. Thanks for letting me have a view of two pristine examples!
I don't think he's gonna let anyone pull out in front of him. It's not that type of driving. You intentionally keep your distance & watch out for people. I know murphys law applies, but you also have to put yourself in the position for it to apply. There are a hand full of these cars on the road here in L.A. The owners aren't driving them down Hollywood Blvd or anything. Come to the La Canada United Artists Theater at about 7am on any given Sat & you'll see a few real cobras. A few nice
I wasn't saying anything against the replicas. My argument was people comparing the replicas against the originals. I'm in same boat as you. I'll never own an original. I can only dream about it, thus it is my dream car. Until I hit mid-life crisis, I don't think I will get serious enough to go after a cobra. Chances it will be a replica. But my choice would be between a cobra or a Mustang GT 500. Till than I'll keep on dreaming. Thanks for your honest reply.
I've seen him strolling the blue one around town. If you can't drive em', why have em? As long as you are careful, don't do anything stupid & be mindful of your surroundings, people will hear you coming & stay sane around you. Besides, how could you resist taking it out for a drive every so often?
There are some really respectable replicas being made here in BRAZIL, and for quite a long time now. The only problem here are the 427, that is very hard to find/import, most of them have 302. A guy in my town has a 427 Cobra tho... try searching for Gasplac, and at w w w.mercadolivre . com. br
listen to that kitten. NO, PANTHER! growl! v8? v10??? what litre are they???? as much as i love the FORD SHELBY COBRA CONCEPT, i think that this is definatly the best! im not too fond of the racing version, but its mainly about the performance!!!
those are like the REAL shelby cobra?!?!?!? and is it true that a real rolling chassis can sell for over $60,000 if its a real rolling chassis and all the numbers match?
@ warger92: it reminds people of an era where the middle class could race in the same category as the elite, and it marked the dawning of the ages for the Supercars! where the Idea of designing a car was the same as designing a coke bottle, everything was influenced by sex appeal of a curvaceous supermodel, speed and living in freedom. It doesn't matter how modified a honda Crx is, It will never be as legendary as a car Produced from that era!
@ warger92: I have no problems with Honda's, they are great Economy cars and make great little hot hatches, but the fact is that they aren't racing cars, no matter how badly you want them to be, they are just that hot hatches. Why are cobras so Expensive, exclusivity, only 21 Fc's and 27 Sc's were built, for racing in the 60's, there where hundreds of original street legal cars but they still fetch for high prices because they bring people back to an era of memories...
@ warger92: the ford reproduction replicas can be build for bugets around $30 000 mid end - 50,000 High end for cars that have way more race proven potential pedegree, are state legal, are certifyable, and pass all the legal liscencing laws. Unlike a honda these cars have a linked racing history, can be tuned to amazingly high figures and run for hundreds of thousands of miles doing so, because they were originally purpose built.
If you built the car in this manner it would have cost you $24,800 just in modifications. this does not include the price of the car that you would have originally bought, it wouldn't be allowed to be driven legally on the streets nor would you be able to legally insure it, It would weigh much more then a cobra, and it wouldn't have anymore potential speed. Ford Factory Reproductions has joined up with factory five, giving them the specs to build almost exact replicas....
Lets for a second assume that you built a $10,000 Dart built racing spec honda a 2.0L engine for your car and $4000 spec racing richardson 5 speed transmission, and $2000. in rear end gears, $2000 in suspension upgrades $1500 in rims and tires upgrades, $500.00 in ceramic brake upgrades and $2000 in air charge equipment $800.00 in exhaust equipment, $2000.00 in frame strengthening adjustments. approximate prices for drift cars. you would have a car that could keep up to a cobra.
@ warger 92: assuming that your car has five gears, your lag time would be 3X5 = 15. 15 seconds of time where your car is running at 150 hp maybe 250 300 if the engine is insanely modified. vs a cobra in a launch of 4 gears with 0 seconds of horsepower lag. not only this your car's rear end gears wouldn't be matched up as efficently to the cars engine which would result in maybe a very modest 150 mph at top speed!
@warger 92: Ehp/Bhp is very different comparison to wheel horsepower! engine horsepower is measured at the crank and, losses much of it in the output process and by the time it gets to the wheels is maybe 350hp! Bhp is again very different then Whp. Bhp is the horsepower at what the car breaks at near from top speed in comparison to Whp which is the horsepower that the car is able to put to the pavement. again Bhp is estimated to 500 which would maybe acount for 400 wheel hp on a single pull.
@warger 92: for now will assume that you have the 1991 Honda Crx 1.6L version of the Crx vtech... when it was produced in 1991 it had a peak engine horsepower of 150 at 5000 Rpm's vs the cobra stable horsepower of 500 wheel hp at 6000 Rpm's. Secondly lets imagine that after $10,000 of modifications your Honda has 500 Ehp/Bhp) It would have to be turbocharged pushing very high boost numbers, and would also have very poor horsepower lag.
@Warger 92: it is very simple to compare and your numbers are very wrong. First off an original cobra in that condition can run anywhere from 500 000 to 5 mil ( Highest selling cobra). Secondly, This car was a 4 speed built in 1964 msrp at that time was $7000.00, it had 500 naturally aspirated hp + in its original configuration and weighed under 2000 Lbs having a max speed of 185Mph...
first, that guy has a load of money to own 2 of those things. second, wtf is he thinking driving them on a public road in heavy traffic? soccer mom on her cell phone rear ends a rare piece of racing/automotive history- it would be a crime. cars like that, it is good to get them out and enjoy them, like on the vintage racing or a private track or whatever. when you own something that could be in a museum you need to be more responsible about the preservation of the cars.
Ya GM pulled it for political reasons, it was so fast they deemed it dangerous for average drivers. But they are more than double that daytona coupe in value. Due to their rarity. Its called the mongoose for a reason, look up the Mongoose's favorite meal. PS the Vette is all american the Cobra cant say that. And the Roger Penske Grandsport is valued at over 20 million you can look that up at Barrett Jackson as well.
I think the only way to certifiie a replica or a Tribue AC Cobra that is build as closely as possibly as the real ones, is if Carrol Shelby himself certifies the Cobra as a true tribute Cobra if he thinks it deserves the certification, based on how it's build, the quality of the work, if it's nos parts, if it's build up as they were originaly with all it's details. I think if you can build such a replica/tribute Cobra really really good, u might have a chance for a certification for your cobra.
What i don't get is why some people says that Carrol Shelby, when used the AC body to make the Cobra, is suposed to steal it from AC, what is stealing about that? He simply made a deal with them, he buyed the body and stuff from them, and made one of the fastest, goodlooking, brutal and most of all: sexiest cars ever, and some people claims it's stealing, stealing?, how the hell can that be stealing? Those who like AC cars should be proud of the AC Cobra, and thank Shelby for perfecting them.
no disrespect intended, but you mostly see replicas because very few people have the quarter of a mil or + spare in the bank to drop on a car... personally i doubt i ever will, however i'd LOVE to own a cobra. and if i did, i would rather drive it than put it under a glass case. i would feel more comfortable leaving a $30,000+/- replica alone in a parking lot than a $250,000+ original.
@pigmysta I have to disagree. This video is anything BUT boring. It's full of interesting facts, specs...You state that they are "two such exciting iconic cars"...Seeing them, hearing a bit about the history of the Cobra, hearing a bit about the history of these two purpose built 427 Cobras and their specifications is (to me) very interesting, if not exciting. ;)
Bob Holbert was a neighbor of mine at one point. He said the FIA cars were always faster than the 427 cars. Part of the reason for that was the 427 cars were never fully developed. They came at the end of the company. He always believed that had Shelby continued they could have made the 427 cars faster than the FIA cars.
I've got a copy of the original repertory of the cobras, coming from AC cars. CSX 3026 went out of the manufacture the 2.5.1965, with no paint, and black interior. CSX 3016 went out of the manufacture the 22.1.1965 with no paint, and black interior. Both are from Shelby los angeles, and that's true, they are full competitions cars.
The Cobra Daytona Coupe went for $7.25 million in August 2009. That's the new record holder. It sold at the 1st Mecum auction held in Monterey, and Bob Boundurant and Peter Brock were both there to watch it sell. I was able to get their autographs! Every car guy needs to be in Monterey during the second week of August. It's the biggest car week in the entire US.
Carol Shelby look for a car to use. ac ace out of england had this car and it did not do well. it raced with an undersized 4 banger. 260 engine was given to him to put in the car. believe it or not it was a tight fit. and if legand is true its first day out for a drive it blew the doors off of a corvette. i would love to have one of these cars and a 427 gt40 in my garage.
I adore these cars and they look absolutely fabulous but...for the amount people are ready to buy such a toy - racing history and Shelby legend taken into account - they can safe thousands of people from starvation...I don't know what would feel better, spinning around a track a couple of days a year or helping another human being?
WOW lovely cars. how much of Donald Trump do you own? cos arent these originals in the region of $500,000 each? security protected 24/7? Brands Hatch (england) is no race track for a Cobra-would not like to of been the driver!! Dips and rises all over the place and no straights, would catch a cobra out in a heartbeat
heh, look right at the end of the video. look how close that black suv thing gets to the back of the blue one and the red car behind that yet. all it takes is the driver of that black suv to be a jackass sending a text. oops. sorry, heres my insurance info. As if that would be any consolation.
this guy says the cobra is a peace of junk and has never had a chance against a corvett...any of them. Ive been in a discussion with him and he lost with the last statement being, basically, all cobra's suck. his user name is larryadam2. hes a chevrolet guy(although he cant spell it,lol). thank you.
thank you very much for that clip.
very well done, and the experience was shared.

The fastest speed ever recorded in a Cobra roadster is 202mph in Dick Smith's legendary red #198.

Thank you much!!! I have an replica 427 cobra an love it more every day I can only imagine what the real one would be like… take care
I have no words........ People should just pull over and park, let these cars own the road, and thank God that they had the opportunity to see one on the road.
The only car to do this, but how does the Shelby Cobra do what it does to me? And how can I even describe it!? But I LIKE it! It's powerful!
Nice distinction between the competition cobra & SC cobras....the former is way more rare and highly desired - thanks for sharing.)

Thanx for the video tour. Nicely done. Oh yeah, the cars are BOSS to... CORVAIRWILD...
WOW. Grats man. i would kill for either of these cars. very nice indeed
Buggerall, youtube didn't post the link when I posted that comment. It is the first video in related videos for this one, now that I look for it.

It's called keeping your car in immaculate condition.
The sound of the 427 in those little beauties is enough to make you wet your pants. Awesome!
i've met and spoken to the owner and seen these amazing cars
Nice CSX cobra. I have seen it in person....
Damn that exhaust!!! And I lovee the hood scoop!
Even If I had a rep. I would be speeding everywhere ahaha
Looks like a fun car!
I saw the original at my school, a teachers father had one lol
@GetsumJ Well said! I roll down my windows when I see one coming, even if it's a replica!
is there a video of the ones that ran the lemans? i heard they are worth the upper 20 millions.
this guy is a boss!!
@ashleyshuggybear Yes fully agree re Viper, what a car!
they might cost a lot cheaper than you expect...
Shelby Cobra
amen!

a beutiful car.
Japan has never produced a car that has near the amount of class the Cobra has. Viper GTS ACRs are faster than the Nissan GTR anyways.

You, sir, are a fortunate man. Thank you very much for sharing.
ok both these cars are amazing but that blue one made me very happy. Easily one of my favorite cars and i have alot of them.
thank you for sharing these with us they are too of the sexyest cars ever build, piece of Anerican racing history. They should be treated with respect!

Incredible works of art and that 12.5:1 compression freggin awesome
"the two are mine" LOL I wish that was me

Can you drive any slower, I actually think a bicycle was catching those cars.
The best car in the world!
Five stars.
Factory Five and Superformance are the best known replica companies that make them.
You're the best,
RR57
I was fortunate enough to have a cool Mom. When I was 16, I talked her into driving my little sister and I from Ft. Lauderdale to Sebring in the poring rain to see 2 Cobra Roadsters and 1 Daytona Coupe open up a can o' whup-ass on Enzo Ferrari's team. Still one of my fondest childhood memories. You can still see replicas race @ Elkhart Lake, WI in vintage races...and they still give me goosebumps. The body is not quite as SEXY as an XK-E, but they're pretty damn close.
superb video, thanks for posting. Only ever seen 2 real cobras - I`m in the UK - and fell in love with them. the shape, sound, the whole package.
I just want to clarify, I love the English. Had I been alive during WW2 I would not have hesitated to fight along side them. My sister-in-law is British, and I have never felt more at home in a foreign place then when I was in England. I miss the pubs. Oh, and these cars kick ass!
yeah but it still beats the new corvettes so go Ford
kids of today...this is real horsepower be advised
He can barely squeeze into that car. It looks like one of those cars the kids ride at the amusement parks.
those car are worth millions, if i am correct.
god bless Carroll Shelby
Vid reminds me of a couple of old athletes now playing golf and lounging around...i guess with millions of dollars at stake you dont hot rod around..
He made two that were turbocharged 427s about 900 horsepower. can you imagine that in a 2400 lb car.
One was built for Bill Cosby and he drove it once then sold it. The guy he sold it to killed him self driving the car and now there is only 1.
A guy in my town has a 427 Cobra tho... try searching for Gasplac, and at w w w.mercadolivre . com. br
Probably the best car ever.
The red one should be repainted.
listen to that kitten. NO, PANTHER! growl! v8?
v10??? what litre are they???? as much as i love the FORD SHELBY COBRA CONCEPT, i think that this is definatly the best! im not too fond of the racing version, but its mainly about the performance!!!
Awesome cars!!!
I'd own one of those over a viper any day of the week!!!
-favorite car of all time
Damn what do you do for a living and how do I do it!!
those are like the REAL shelby cobra?!?!?!? and is it true that a real rolling chassis can sell for over $60,000 if its a real rolling chassis and all the numbers match?
Lets for a second assume that you built a $10,000 Dart built racing spec honda a 2.0L engine for your car and $4000 spec racing richardson 5 speed transmission, and $2000. in rear end gears, $2000 in suspension upgrades $1500 in rims and tires upgrades, $500.00 in ceramic brake upgrades and
$2000 in air charge equipment $800.00 in exhaust equipment, $2000.00 in frame strengthening adjustments. approximate prices for drift cars. you would have a car that could keep up to a cobra.
Its
called the mongoose for a reason, look up the Mongoose's favorite meal.
Ive been in a discussion with him and he lost with the last statement being, basically, all cobra's suck.
his user name is larryadam2.
hes a chevrolet guy(although he cant spell it,lol).
thank you.
