As a Nigerian, this is such an important topic and I’m so glad you made it. It’s such a big issue that needs to be talked about. Thanks for telling it! ❤️
The government was really evil for turning against their own people. They tried to turn native South Africans against their own president, Jacob Zuma, but blacks are stubborn in South Africa. They don't trust white people and whites act baffled by this.
I as a Nigerian, nothing in this video is shocking to me. I've been saying it for the longest time.. no matter how evil any foreign organisation/company may be, with takes the help of our corrupt government for them to harm us or steal from us. So I blame our government for it all.
Summer, you've just nailed it! ' Isn't there a saying that charity begins at home ? If there wasn't an institutionslised corruption in Nigeria , would they have gotten away with it ? Right now, Nigeria needs to prioritise the creation of a new value systems over the building of New roads. A value sysytem that prioritises dilligence over the love materialism and illicit wealth; godliness and good moral values over consumerism! My heart truly bleeds for Nigeria!
@@strategystuff5080 yes they would. They'd just have to use more violence, like US led corporations do all over the world. Nigeria would be like Iraq right now if they resisted.
Royal Dutch shell, the Dutch after gaining independence from the holy Roman empire (empress Maria Theresa of the Hapsburgs), allied and competed with the British. The Dutch mostly in the spice and slaves trades. It is all colonial still.
@@ray_x6959 To me if the quality of the video is good (and it’s not repetitive or recycled info) it’s irrelevant if the title (or thumbnail) is clickbait.
This is quite similar to the situation in Bolivia a few years ago when a corporation bought rights to all the water in the entire country, so the people were not even allowed to gather rainwater from puddles. The people revolted, and the Bolivian military came immediately to the aid of ... The global corporation, against their own people.
@@selokelawillem3204 didn't see that film. Crazy what we consider entertainment. As long as we can see ourselves in the mirror, we will pay to watch ourselves on the silver screen! Well I have always thought that we are obviously building an entire world full of card palaces. It is no joy to be correct in this case.
@@selokelawillem3204 Pliz just don't watch a movie for fun....learn a bit of it,pick a lesson like 24 by Kiefer Sutherland was suspended coz it depicted directly all the rotten shit in the political systems...
@@Theactualstoic This happened in every country that Europe "discovered" in the last few hundred years, the same pattern. Still today, they feel they have a right to take the resources of any country and harvest them for their own profit, and the lives and rights of the indigenous people are meaningless, except as inconvenient obstacles. Corporations are purely evil in this historical and ongoing pattern. But if you are watching this channel... I am probably preaching to the choir now.
As a Nigerian you cant imagine how grateful I am for this video you've made. Showing the people what private cooperation are doing in our country with the assistance of those who have been put in to help us.
my frnd you cant fight dis hige coorporation by such tactics u have to first reach upto dere levels hold the same power as dem only way is to send your highly skilled ppl abroad for education who will sharp dere skills and learn the ways to teach dem lesson dey will come back with resources and teach dere ppl skills and thus coorporation will go down
these aren't privet companies. these are public companies traded on public stocks all over the world. That's the problem not shell. Shell wouldn't be shell if the world stopped buying its oil or stocks. They get the oil from you to sale but they don't sell it to you they sell it to the world. So far , far from privet like you say. And this is the problem we have. WE let these ppl get so rich with the worlds money. yeah we are def over dew for another world war that's for sure. I don't mean it in a hateful way or want ppl to dye but that's what it takes. The Scots wouldn't be free if they didn't dye for it first. Same goes for the Africans they are goin to have to unit and push back. Cause if Africa could unit and become independent as a whole country which doubt will ever happen cause we fight amounts ourselves much less. But yeah if they could unite they would be the largest gdp in the world and by 2100 they will have 7 out of the 10 largest cites in the world. So Africa as a whole is Stronger than they even know them selves.
As a Nigerian, we can't thank you enough for shedding more light and talking about this exploitation done on our lands, sadly people from those regions are considerd terrorists for fighting for thier homes and lively hood, hoping to see more content about exploitations like this around the world.
Oh shut up. What are you doing to tell your own story? You want foreigners to keep telling it for you. If it's not CNN, it's BBC. If it's not mega media corporations, then you wait for western youtubers to bring your stories to light. What a bunch of consumers
And after all we have to watch little worms like some celebrities and famous activists trying to deceive people in to believe that they are fighting for the environment fuc** them.
I used to be a staunch supporter of unrestricted capitalism... But living in Mexico, I understood what is like to have a really unrestricted market, with no government regulations and only driven by profit and competition: You get a cartel. And no matter how renowned, how legal the products and how elaborate the PR, it is still a cartel. A cartel that can ruin the lives of millions of people, damage the environment and purchase a country's government to operate with impunity for as long as they want. I still believe in a free market, but with regulations that protect the consumer first... Otherwise, companies are free to do what they want, including things like what Shell did in Nigeria and what drug cartels do in my country - Not too different.
Very true. People and companies need to be restrained/stopped from doing this sort of thing by the government. Of course, what happened with Shell is the fault of a particularly corrupt government, not the fault of capitalism.
So sad that music videos and other mainstream content gets billions of views in just hours while more important documentaries like this gets views from less than a percent of the world's population... nevertheless, thankful for the effort and courage to raise awareness Jake! May we find justice together and live in peace and harmony.
You are so right. As a Nigerian, i find it ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVEABLE that those musicians get millions, Billions of likes while Documentaries like the one above are hardly noticed. The reason why i call Most of Nigeria,s Youth , ( THE BORN-THROWAY)=THE WASTED GENERATION!
You know this is a well-hidden story when the MSM doesn’t make a peep about it and you don’t see it anywhere without looking really hard. Well done Jake.
I am one of the Ogoni people who left our community when the military starting killing people they assumed was part of the protests. Even until these day, part of our community is uninhabitable.
It is terrible. I know some Ogoni brethren in the church I attend here in the US. We still discussed the Ogoni 9 and how the Ogoni people fled to the US to seek asylum
The government has dealt with it's people, just to have their pockets lined by the people. As a Nigerian i can't help but feel awful about all this. Thanks jake for all you've done.
bro the shell company THE SHELL OIL COMPANY!!! do any of you know the really bad shit they have done to Africans in Nigeria like to this very day. one guy tried to stand up the that company and they falsified evidence saying he was a rapist and his country executed him shell also pays their government to keep the peasants in line through force. very violent force. this info alone should get every black person to Absolutely vote for anyone but joe biden or anyone that supports biden
This brings back many old memories. My dad started out working for SHELL in the late 60’s and quite barely a year in. He would always tell us how the company purposefully sought to destabilize and cause unrest in their “HOST” communities to ensure the people could never mount a unified resistance towards SHELL. He always told us they were an evil company and worked his entire life to ensure SHELL never drilled a single welll in our community. Still, all of that didn’t prepare me for this video 😢 This is pure EVIL.
@@TheBigIronOnMyHip I’m from Bayelsa State, Ogbia to be precise, where Oil was first discovered in Nigeria back in the 1956 by Shell D’acry. We were the first Nigerians to ever deal with Shell, be employed by Shell and to suffer the brunt of Shells Evils in Nigeria. For over 50 years; we never had a Traditional Ruler (King) directly as a result of divisions and factions created by and fostered by SHELL to prevent any coherent form of aggression towards their activities. But I wonder why I’m explaining myself to a clueless stranger on RUclips.
@Joël I see what you are saying but that still doesn’t change the fact that they are stealing another country’s recourses while giving little to nothing in return to the citizens
What they have done to African countries is truly disgusting. These companies don't give a shit about human lives. We should conciliate the wellbeing of the people with the maintenance of economic aspects, but society is too vain
I used to work for shell as an independent contractor. Discrimination and exploitation of contract workers drove me away. Now I don't even fuel up at their gas station. That's how disgusted I'm with them.
Even if we had the skills to exploit our resources (which we don't), we do not have the capital to do it. We are therefore forced to rely on foreign companies, whose focus is on their own bottom lines. My country has massive deposits of iron ore. We however do not have coal or the capital to buy coal. We are landlocked, which triples capital requirements for the fuel and the equipment we have to import to build blast furnaces. Without foreign capital, the deposits will remain unused. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I'm from the US and I swear for God I will never again spend another penny of my damn money at a Shell again and to the Nigerian people I'm sorry for the way these people have done your homeland this is just wrong man brings tears to my eyes to know and see these things and what it's caused the Nigerian people peace and love be with you and I'll be sure to donate something to help you people God bless y'all man
This should be announced frequently and intensely by all media to show this to the public but as always nobody is caring about so thank you for your work for publishing and revealing this video and its content !
And they never will cause it doesn't effect their personal lives and they don't want the troubles you have when they don't have them in the first place. Its like i say all the time. I love my country to death but we need wars on our lands again to bring the ppl back together. Sound like all this war on Africa's lands has did the opposite to African ppl like Afghanistan. But it doesn't do that for others like the Scots. They fought to the death for their freedoms, and didn't stop fighting till they did. I see it in the faces of the African ppl on the news how they have let these ppl get to them. They have let them depress etc. It was the same look of the Afghanistan kids and how they have had all hope stripped from them. You can see it in their eyes. They don't believe in themselves anymore. Funny or ironic shall i say, how what brings one country together, destroys another.....
If Africa would unite they would be the largest gdp on the planet. They will have 7 out of the 10 largest cities in Africa by 2100. Yet its the poorest country cause its so damn corrupt. Meaning the ppl have to take it back meaning they have to unite the African ppl and take back what is theirs just like the scots etc. Trust me if everyone in Africa stopped working tomorrow and started fighting back the worlds would be in so much troubles cause we have supply shortages now with the war with Russia etc to the point that Africa would hurt the world and kick start a world war if they did it right!....
Whoa.... Discovered your channel yesterday and seeing you did a video on my country.... Thank you for this.. Everything in my country has gone to hell... Everyone has been trying to fight but the government doesn't care.... Thank you... I'm now a fan of this channel
@Roman Black you know history isn't thought in our schools so I don't expect the vast majority of Nigerians to know (especially people who aren't from the South south).
@Roman Black yea, I was born in Voronezh, Russia in 1993. Came back to Nigeria with my mum in 1994 and have been living in this schithole. Growing up my upbringing was slightly different but not too far from most Nigerians. All my life fitting in has been a problem because of things I say, things I value and of course everyone else calls me crazy (while I think they all are). I was interested in maps at age 5, discovery channel, cartoons, music and documentaries in general (and to date not much has changed). So, yea, I'm Nigerian but not mentally 😂😂😂
My dad did business in Nigeria. He came from a poor family, lost his dad at 9, never went to school due to war, then traded tires as a teen in Cameroon, then motorcycles and marine engines till his 40’s and made millions in West Africa, Western Europe, and east Asia (Japan and China) where he ended up meeting my mom and settling. Eventually, Nigerian government officials looted his showroom, his imported goods, then his warehouses, one by one. They asked for his company certificate to carry out investigations, he gave it, then they used it to take out millions of dollars in loans. At this point my family was ded and buried but my dad was still a pain in the arse for the state trying to sue them, so naturally they tried assasinating him, car "incidents", poison, arson to our home, blah blah blah, point being, y’all don’t realize how much of a joke Nigeria is. It's a failure of a country in every capacity. You can try actually working but you'll just be another source for Nigeria's "leaders" to get more money.
Same thing with Russia here. But here everything is run by FSB (analog of FBI married with NSA and CIA) and the police. And instead of international corporations, stealing from people, we got them, stealing our taxes and natural resources, for sell off of which we don't get a dime. They keep power with iron fist, and as you can see - started a war even, to dust everyone's eyes. Sad thing - russian propaganda is the most successful and effective on this planet. They managed to zombiefy people with open access to the information and different media. People honestly believe that the west is on their way to undermine and destroy Russia. The amount of those people is closer to 80%. The others are silent, because if you open your mouth you risk everything. Even the lives of your loved ones. There are examples: a person fled to some western country and government agencies assassinated his elderly mother. Literally like terrorists do.

This is exactly what happened in my home land Venezuela. Corporations bought the Govt and viceversa. I dunno if this channel ever made a video on it, but I'd love to see people cover what the media never told anyone, as it's happening here in the U.S too (slowly and differently.) As a Nigerian from the Niger Delta, I really do appreciate the effort you have put into the making of this video. This is a tragic story that has been hidden for decades. Thank you for telling our story.🙏🏽
I'm from the Niger Delta in Nigeria. Stayed in koko for over 5 years. When you go to the rural areas and see the damages done by these companies to the environment and the people, you wonder how it's possible that they still operate. Then you move just a few miles to the palaces of the Olu's, the Oba's, the chiefs, the LGC's and so on. You see the brand new cars, the flashy lifestyles, the new houses. Its not difficult to understand who's enabling these oil companies. WE ARE OUR PROBLEM.
Not today, they’ve been bribing the chiefs and leaders since slave trade time. We be our problem like you said. Ataka Tom is now Cheif or king in his community being paid by shall to stop attacking their pipes
I get what you mean, as a fellow African, it's almost like the modern construct of nations has been programmed to fail us and profit the colonisers in the long term. Our administrators learned from western books and are programmed to work in the interest of those foreign powers. How else can we explain the lack of consideration for their own people?
@@hedeceivedthewholeworld6360 Only us the people can fight for what's our. By relying less on foreign powers and building our economies. You can't have leverage when you are a begger. When you rely on import for virtually everything for the sustainability of your country you give power to the economies of your suppliers. When you sell off your lands for pennies to companies to pilage and empty your resources, you give them power to do whatever. That is what we suffer and our greatest problem in Africa. Bad leadership. Gaddafi tried to show us the way. We celebrated him being killed by foreign influenced powers. Our own brother. Once we can root out Bad Leadership in Africa. Africa will rise.
How are you supposed to change your lifestyle if public transportation is not a available to you or your job relies on the use of private transport. People are chained to their jobs and cannot change if the system does not allow it. Like in the USA the motor system is completely dependent on cars and trucks. Almost no or effective public transport. Or Nigeria (Im assuming here) that the government is too corrupt or does not have enough money to make a public transportation.

Damn feel your pains brother . This is why we igbos are fighting hard to leave the so called evil business government the zoo. If you check out the leaders they used are all from the north who do not care about human beings but after bribes
This is incredible! I myself am Ogoni and my father took part in the protest in the 90s. It’s great to see people talking about this and I learned something new from this video!
What an interesting juxtaposition between two similar countries. Thank you for the monotheism, but I wonder how Australia and Canada are doing when it comes to protest. Thank you so much for showing this. I hope others share this so that they can look at where they're at physically and financially in their lives. Please keep making these documentaries you can generate enough Revenue to help us all with gas money.
As a Nigerian,it is very sad though. Thanks for shedding light on this. It was long overdue. However no amount of public out cry is going to stop them. The Government and the police are not working in our interests. Unfortunately, it has lead to a vicious cycle of poverty. That's why most of us nigerians move to Ghana.
I’m Egyptian and I wanna say if we Africans didn’t learn that strength and power is a must in this decade, we will -or already- screwed What happened to this Nigerian hero that refused shell’s tyranny? This was in 90s and let me tell you why they’re living in poverty, their leaders who were the strong militants of 2000s have taken big bribes from shall. They’re being paid in billions of dollars for example Ateke Tom. Am sure you remembered him as the bush boy but now a king in his communities. Their leaders can’t fight for the poor

I feel you, Nigeria is, unfortunately, just an example of how large corporations evade the law. Fortunately, due to both the creation of Amazon worker unions, and the EU implementing harsh measures on big tech, some change seems to be coming. I still believe in some form of free market, but i also believe that a market can only be free if the actors in it are held accountable for their actions.

As a black man born in America with Afro/Caribbean roots... Its stories like this that opens my eyes as to why Black countries are where they are today... Not because of foreign involvement or white man colonization primarily.. But it shows how as a "Race" we see ourselves as "indifferent" when it comes to greed and prosperity. We would rather inflict pain and suffering on ourselves at the expense for "profit"... Africa as a continent will never be able to become a super power not unless "unity" is "absolute".. Very good Watch!!
The old men in power need to be killed off. That's just the reality because they will never abdicate their power and waiting for them to die out doesn't help because they just install their equally crazy offspring into power to continue the dreadful cycle.
Same thing happening for years and currently in Europe to the developing countries. They quickly bend the knee to the west and let them destroy our countries for a paycheck.
It’s not that simple. The reason why we’re like that today is because that’s how Europeans engineered it. They seen what we could do when we unite together and they’d rather have us in a mental state where we fighting each other like crabs in a barrel than focusing on the overall prosperity of our people. Any African leaders that try to industrialize and develop an African country gets put down. All a country from the EU or US government has to do is come up with a “dictatorship” or “terrorist” story to give them a moral excuse to send their military over to destabilize the political scene and cause chaos. Then “stabilize” it with handpicked leaders that’ll do whatever they tell them.
@@terrencelockettjr.3916 Nothing in life is simple... Regardless, what is engineered or what the outcome may be... At the end of the day; being a "Nubian" with African decent. The thought of "Europeans engineered it", African leaders - get put down for development, or US/EU military destabilization is "programing meant to tame "sheep".. Look at India and Pakistan.. As a nation they aren't perfect but they at least were able to build themselves up as a "Power".. I feel that "Mental Slavery" is the true villain here.. Which is why all "Black" nations fail... Learn from the past; so that we don't make mistakes for the future.. You get stuck in the past - then you don't have a future...
@@rmoore6471 Pakistan and India began building their power during the time when some African countries were still colonized. You gotta realize some of these countries have barely been free for 30 40 years and now we’re at a time where the gap in firepower is so huge it’s damn near impossible to defend ourselves. “The mental slavery” does play a part in it though it’s just a small obstacle compared to what we have to face. Look at ghadaffi for example remember what they did to him? Or Patrice lambada. So many more examples. I feel if we do decide to unite under on mass organized governed country we’d have to be allied with a superpower country that could give us military technology in exchange for natural resources. At the end of the day that’s the only reason why our people have been ravaged.

The thing is, if those politicians resist they will be taken care of by the CIA. Happened too many times throughout history. You either comply or die. What choice do they really have? Well, okay, maybe resign. But I guess when someone waves a few millions in front of your face most people would eventually give in.
If the government is honest and refuses, shell would just plot a coup d'etat to put a new government. They, among with other companies, kinda helped to do that to my country, Brazil, im 2016. The current bolsonazi government is in their pockets stealing our oil
You missed the point, they prey on poor countries. When your poor your bound to take any deal out of desperation and that’s what these big bullies prey on to gain access to what they want. Hey think about how you can help your people with this money if you let us get the oil. Wake up and use common sense. Preying on the desperation of individuals is disgusting so I’m going to blame shell more then anything because it was disgusting to even prey on their desperation knowing they will agree.
That would be convenient for the countries and financial organizations like the IMF World Bank, and WTO who ACTUALLY facilitate this all around the world. These rich corporations don't work alone.

As a Nigerian this is super sad for me to hear and listen to because its true for many other companies regarding oil and generators production. These people have always tried to stunt the growth of African countries so that we dont develop and never rely on them again, its sad and annoying!. think of it please, africans are really smart people, why is it that we always excel where ever we go in the world in the fields of medecine, tech, finance, sports and so on? they know this and our potential so it must be stunted so we dont industrialize lol. They along with the CIA control many of the leaders in Africa and if they can't be controlled then they will be killed then they will put the ones that can be their puppets in power haha. think about it!!! the moment that Gaddafi proposed the idea of all o Africa using one currency which was gold the US made propaganda against him and sent troops into Libya then bribed some of his people to kill him including his son!! yes his son, the same Gaddafi that his government gave free education, free food to an extent, free healthcare, free housing once you turned 18!! and many other things lol. many countries in the west rely on Africa's resources so that they dont get poor, many people know that without Africa then places like france, England the US and many others will be in poverty now, may God help us. JFK spoke about these set of people that will try to enslave mankind 7 days before he was killed, may he Rest In Peace (obviously the cabal and the CIA killed him).
Right?! This is so much h bigger than the Nigerian government. I'm so paranoid about this that I fully believe that the war in 1967-1970 was the work of outsiders. I honestly don't think it was about Biafra independence.

Eventually, Nigerian government officials looted his showroom, his imported goods, then his warehouses, one by one. As a Nigerian, this makes me sick to my stomach. thanks for shedding light on this
As a black man born in America with Afro/Caribbean roots...
I would rather die on my feet fighting than being on my knees as a slave.... As a united front - the skies the limit regardless...
If Shell is an America company how come the SEC hasn’t prosecuted them under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act? Why are they allowed to get away with crimes when ordinary civilians get thrown in jail for much less offenses?

if i was to blame someone, I'd blame shell once and blame the corrupted government ten times. it's ridiculous how few selfish can turn life into a horror movie for millions
The current bolsonazi government is in their pockets stealing our oil
you wouldnt blame US govnt?
And they say Africa should be worried about China…
@@Theactualstoic who said anything about wanting to be owned? Why would anyone want to be enslaved? Obviously if Africa could stand on its own it would’ve long ago, but when you got interference, corruption, coups, and your finances being entangled, etc, then there’s little you can do. But whether you like it or not, China has been a better ally for Africa than the entire west ever has, so it’s the lesser evil.

That’s why they are the elite. If you do not have the drive to get there, you wont, and a morality wont help you there. And as an answer to your question, yes, but depending on who i would harm and in what context.
No
They are not people anymore. Thats what happens when you sell your morals and soul for money. Most of these CEOs dont have a choice as their families are in danger otherwise.
