Crude oil discovery is the worst thing to ever happen to Nigeria
Discovery of natural resources can be used to catapult nation up economic ladder but only true in a nation run by smart people. Nigeria is run by dimwits hence why crude oil is the bane. Nigerians need to learn how to show proper loyalty to their nation and their motherland.

As someone living in Port Harcourt, I can say that black soot is really a problem. It's impossible these days to sleep and wakeup without having black stuff in your nose and when you have catarrh, it's usually blackish.

Shocked at finding 480 illegal sites and oil spewing for 40 days. I’ve heard about how terrible the Nigerian government and businessmen are but this really left me speechless. Looks like everyone has a price and it’s small in comparison to what it’s doing to their own people. Something tells me, all the Nigerian men in charge of these bad practices live in Houston, TX and London. Places with clean air, clean money, and a high standard of living.

It's the classic problem of a dirty admin. He wants to solve the pollution issue, but he doesn't want to make enemies, start a war, or cut off his own revenue.

A whole civil war was fought over British corporate rights to the oil in Nigeria. Since then the country has been being bled dry.
The problem is a symptom of a deep problem: the government has failed in its duty to ensure that small busineess has fair access to crude oil as well as regulation and structures that help SMEs to thrive. You cant have a situaton where large foreign firms make super profits whilst citizens suffer. Tthe government needs to do better for SMEs.
Still an issue of corruption here, whoever is buying/ordering 150k barrels of oil per day should be held responsible here, all Gas/fuel stations in the state should be audited, they should all provide evidence of their Crude/fuel purchase from the NNPC or whoever is the official supplier. The Rivers state government definitely knows who is behind all of this, this has been going on for more than 10 years and they're only taking action now because environment is unbearable.

Shell, chevron and corrupt Nigerian government officials need to be put to trial by the international criminal court. All these incidents are very preventable if the local and international community are against them.
That’s what you got from this? Company comes in to drill oil, you kick them out, they have to leave sites due to violence, then you (not an oil operator) illegally collect and sell the commodities, on top of polluting your fellow citizens, then blame the illegal burns on the company that was forced to abandoned the site, by you. And it’s solely their fault? You interpret information incorrectly.
This isn't big corporation issue, this is an unlicensed/unskilled local pirate issue.
Seriously, when a gas truck crashes in Nigeria, locals will ignore the driver and rush to steal the gasoline. Accidents are frequent.
@@seanchristophersapp No you're not getting the point here, even before those pipelines were vandalized, Shell Chevron and other oil companies have been polluting the environment from their refineries and oil spills which have affected the river line areas of the Niger Delta, mind you the Niger Delta people are primary fishermen and farmers and so this oil companies have failed to provide alternate job opportunities for the people which has led some of them to indulge in Pipeline vandalism and oil bunkering.

It's such a shame. Here in Norway we used to be just as poor as Nigeria was, but the foundation that the healthy economy at, with very low corruption, is the welfare state. Nigeria have to start focusing on their people, on solidarity, or else the wealth from oil will just continue to be a curse.

This is sad. The political traditional and religious leaders all failed their people. I live in Abu Dhabi and this so not true.
Nigeria formally owned by the Royal Niger Company and sold to the British who further exploited the resources, today the Royal Niger Company is still trading as Unilever. Post colonial era the Northern oligarchs have continued from where the British stop, this exploitation will continue until oil becomes totally redundant in 2030. This is the tip of the iceberg, the billion of dollars that it will cost to clean up the Delta can never be afforded by Nigeria especially with the demise of oil. The health implications are immense, I nearly died breathing polluted air in Port Harcourt in 2014 during a business trip. I don’t blame the oil companies, it is the role of the Nigerian government to regulate activities of oil nationals.
As if most of u knew about this part of our history if it wasn’t for the music y’all listened to that disclosed all these knowledge to some of y’all.

Why would the oil money be shared equally? I lived in Texas 10 years ago. The gas was over $5 a gallon, like it is now. But the roads are in disrepair, many are extremely poor, to the point the train tracks is what separates rich from poor. They pay their workers federal minimum wage at $7.25 and believe in paying workers in tips. Tips were invented so white people didn't have to pay former slaves an hourly wage. which is still living strong today. And that's the united states. Not some poor nation so again why would you think the rest of the country gets a spread of the wealth when us rich countries don't
thats just not true,countries had tips not just for slavery . not everything is about slavery.

Needless to say that the latest laws concerning the energy saving standards incease the price of a single family home easily by another 40.000€ (~45.000 USD). Couldnt that money be spend better? Nah, is not like theres whole cities in nigeria, which choke on soot.

@@Hansulf It is impossible to eliminate oil, gas and coal demand. Apart from the need for energy, which can not be replaced by anything else on such a large scale, the compounds that are separated out of these 3 raw materials are the building blocks to the industrial world, they produce many things across many different industries; medicines, fertilizers, synthetic rubbers, dyes, pesticides, plastics.
Petrochemicals are organic compounds that are the ingredients for the chemical industry. They are the building blocks to produce everything on mass scale.
Apart from the energy needed for farming, the fertilizers and pesticides are required to produce the amount of food needed.
The need for these raw materials goes far beyond energy.

The oil companies have already polluted the land for over 40 years now with no wealth at all given to the native people of the land before these illegal Refineries were made. These no jobs, no electricity, no development, no running water in these areas at all……In the 80s the people protested but were killed by the government. The native people of the land were formally fishermann and lived off the water which they have not been able to do for years now. These illegal refineries are in response to all of this and only started 5 years ago.……so is it really short sightedness and greed or would you say desperation and lost hope for life?
Alleyway refiners spill oil in their own lands, the international refiners spill theirs on a grander scale. Same thing called different names. The tragedy though is that those who have the power to stop both of them won’t do that because they make money from the trade. Those local (aka illegal) refiners have godfathers within the authorities. They just won’t tell you that.
Just another example that our world system, civilisation is it's last days. Just another example.

The city I grew up in. It was not a problem then. The air was reasonably clean aside from the odd harsh Harmattan season.
My mother owns a school there and is constantly talking to us about it. It is a travesty. More so since I am nominally in the Oil industry myself.
It is practically the only source of gainful international standard employment one can hope to acquire in this mess of a country.
Same for the farmers of Brazil. Forced to cut their trees , in order to buy food. They make it so that the only way to live is to participate in the destruction of their own beautiful, ancient, abundant, natural, HOME. 😠heartbreaking 💔

This is sad. The political traditional and religious leaders all failed their people. They’ve refused to speak 🗣 out against all the corruption going on in Nigeria 🇳🇬 and I also blame the ordinary citizens who has refused to take to the streets for a revolution. Nigeria 🇳🇬 is a hopeless cause. This brings great pains to my heart seeing how our people live back home and they’ve come to be accustomed to such a lifestyle.
