I am no longer a virgin to ultra-low cost carriers; my onboard experience with Avelo

  • Join me today on my first-ever flight with an ultra low-cost carrier. As one of the US's newest airlines, Avelo began operations in 2021 and as of 2023 flies to more than 40 destinations.
    Some suggestions for Avelo:
    - During the online booking experience, make it abundantly clear to passengers that "personal items" does not mean items that safely fit underneath the seat in front of you. Clarifying this may reduce drama at the gate and encourage a more pleasant experience for PAX.
    - Revise the at-gate personal item vs. carry-on display. Frontier and Spirit both utilize an at-gate display that allows passengers to demonstrate a personal item or carry-on can fit within a certain volume of space. Your (Avelo's) display implies that personal items or carry-ons that overlap the size restriction cut-out, regardless of whether they can physically be enclosed in that space, are not recognized as personal items or carry-ons and pax must pay at the gate for a personal item or checked bag, respectively.
    - Consider implementing a buy-on-board snack and drink menu.

This was a great and informative video. I've used Avelo three times so far and never had an issue. I plan on continuing to use them, because who doesn't like to save money? 😊

I use to work for Avelo. Huge issue is that their booking page doesn't clearly show the personal item dimensions, you have to dig on their FAQ page to get their dimensions. And it is needed because they have the smallest dimensions of 14 x 9 x 9.5 inches. My coworkers and I have complained about it since we work face to face with customers, but they brush it off because last minute bag fees makes them money.

Thanks for your input. That was my biggest “issue” during my experience. I sense a class action lawsuit down the road from angry customers who misunderstood personal item refers to any item that can be safely stowed under the seat in front of you.

@@phlyingdoctor I agree because no way that underseat area is 9 x 9.5 inches. The seat itself is usually 17 inches wide.

You're right! Seems I did a poor job at correcting some of my voice-over mistakes.
