Sudden Strike 4 is a decent WW2 RTS which is for those who want a more detailed system than Company of Heroes, but find Ostfront may be TOO detailed. The main highlight is the story and the potential for more via the DLC's if you find you enjoy the base game. Oh, and the very attractive price when it's on sale, which it is regularly!

A more straightforward game but simply amazing. 3.) I'm really not sure. I got it for $20 complete edition on ps4 and its a great rts without base building. once you get the understanding of how mechanics work and controls its a good game imo. The missions are long if you strive for 3 stars
@@twiglets2 its super easy to me since I took the time to figure out what does what, I would say the hard part it getting the units in a formation you specifically want with the thumbstick when you have to slightly move it forward a little. Other than that, its smooth sailing for me, im sure its easier on mnk for sure
Same I think I actually got mine for 7.99$ I think it was during a Christmas deal, but yeah I do love this rts military game, use to play the shit out of company of heroes and the 2nd one and this was the only game on console that actually reminded me of company of heroes.
Microsoft gave away this game and all DLC for free to gamepass subscribers. Pretty sweet deal …and controls are very smooth on XBOX Series. It may also support KB/Mouse on console, as do many strategy games I own.
This game is one of the best I’ve come across compared to the old command and conquer from back in the day. Small maps wish was bigger but wouldn’t be so bad if more would be on multiplayer
Once you get over the fact it's a completely different game to the original Sudden Strike games, and is basically Sudden Strike in name only, it's a fun game to play. It definitely has its flaws, such as a lack of one shot one kill mechanics, and the fact that none of the scenarios feel like the grand scale epic battles they should be, but what I do like is how they made the effort to include all the important battles of the war in as many theatres as possible. Just a shame we never got that Mediterranean DLC!
I was thinking "I wish Twiglets made a Sudden Strike 4 review" and behold! Thank you lol. I play a lot of Steel Division, Company of Heroes, Gates of Hell, Men of War, etc., and I think Sudden Strike 4 is underrated. Despite the almost mobile-game like presentation of the art syle, I don't think the game is actually that casual. Effective use of combined arms is super important to not have your units be wasted. You can't blob units in this game or you'll get smoked. I think the games art style can mislead people into thinking this is one of those games. (Not saying you said that, just something I'm bringing up.) Tons of campaign content which I love. Skirmish modes could be better and I wish I could zoom in more to see the action. Great game imo. Enjoyed the review. Seems like you've been into WW2 strategy games for a bit. If you're feeling brave I recommend looking at Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front. It's an Eastern Front WW2 RTS with a focus on macro and realism. Don't let the UI intimidate you.

When I was a console gamer I bought this game, and liked it because I really had no ther RTS choice on that platform. I suddenly remembered the joy of this game. I really liked its integration of battlefield logistics. I am considering purchasing again on PC however I want to make sure its still worth it.

You can only regain health on a tank on Campaign easy mode. multiplayer, skirmish, or campaign normal mode, that’s were you can’t regain health on a tank, (Also, if you are wondering about the path finding, for me is like tell a toddler to move units while the enemy’s are shooting you)
nice to see that they actually had the guts and decency to have Pacific war missions and campaigns. Most game makers seem to be way too scared to do more Pacific theater stuff.

I've only played this one, but have heard the previous versions were great! Do you think it's fair to say that compared to other WW2 RTS games this is quite basic? As in the mechanics and the tactics? I found it a relatively straightforward (and therefore rewarding) game compared to others, but then I might just not know it well enough to see the detail!
Intrigued by the WW2 setting but I've literally never played an RTS in my life, also I'm on console so I know I'm not getting the ideal experience. Not sure whether I should take a risk on this.
My biggest questions would be: What I hated about company of heroes: 1. Can I give orders while under pause? 2. Can I zoom out properly? What I missed in steel division: 1. Infantry can't take cover behind tanks. 2. No targeting with grenades
@@itamarmenashe5452 in company of heroes 2? You can zoom in to your hearts content, but you can't zoom out enough to make big-scale decisions comfortably, I find. And with the pause button, it's in a stupid place on the keyboard, and the game doesn't allow you to remap
@@jankutac9753 I use x-mouse button control to remap pause button to a mouse button. As for zoom, you have mods like the excellent winkinger mod that allows to zoom out more and units can detect, see, shoot from greater distances.

I bought it on sale from GOG with all the DLC, played two missions, and haven't touched it for two years. It's still installed on my computer. I guess it just wasn't for me because it doesn't have real-world tactics that I can use. It felt like I was playing Red Alert 2 but without the ridiculous video cutscenes.
Haha those Red Alert 2 cutscenes bring back memories! I've enjoyed my time with Sudden Strike 4, the campaign was fun, but I think the reality is Ostfront has so much depth in comparison.
@@twiglets2It all depends on the individual. RTS players are some of the most difficult to satisfy, and this one was just point-and-click with no strategy. I'm speaking for myself, of course. It doesn't make it a bad game, but I already played Codename Panzers. But then again, I'm someone that enjoys very much close combat, Men of War, and combat missions for RTS as well as Syrian Warfare. I am more the exception than the rule.
@@TheRealSpeedWolf I think a lot of this game is tank focused, and really, there are other games that "do tanks" better than this. As an entry into the genre its good, but for more experienced players it's a bit shallow!
excellent review, many thanks. I get plenty of hours of re-playability by trying to collect the Steam achievements. I found the use of wrong accents during voice-overs to "destroy the moment", things like thick American accents for Japanese dialogue.
Got the game for 1 euro ,and I must say after watching this(very well made) video I think that I achieved peak performance as far as value for money goes

I see some ppl not digging it but there is a limited amount of rts on console and honestly I was impressed with the explosions in the game, they looked good compared to others, I have noticed that if you don't take the time to learn the controls your stuck blobbing your units and that's just a disaster, so far I really enjoy it, it's better than red alert imo closest I can get to strategy, order of battle is a good strategy game, not the best graphics but good strategy nonetheless, down side is your stuck learning the game yourself bc the tutorial doesn't fit all of it in there and there's alot strategy wise
When playing on console is there a way to select different types of units so you can focus them correctly, or do you just select everything and send them all??
@@twiglets2 yes you can double tap the a button on Xbox one x and it will select all the same units or you can push down on the d-pad to select a unit type in the control group you've selected to use specifically that unit, good for flanking etc, if my control group 1 is say 3 panzers, 5 rifleman, and 2 medics, I could hit down on dpad till the rifleman are highlighted and send them in another direction or put them in a building, whatever you want to do with them, after you learn the controls it's not that difficult it's pretty enjoyable game on console, rts games can be a pain on console but I feel like they did the controls fairly well compared to others

@@twiglets2 it's fun on the Xbox one x, I would assume it's similar on others, we have 2 Xbox series x in the house 😂 one for me and one for my son, we play eachother sometimes or if somebody comes over we can all play, I think we enjoy this game more than red alert, they have their similarities but when I play red alert online I just don't like the fact that once you have a build scheme you can decimate your opponent with low tier units and it seems to be what everyone tries to do and it's effective, you will hardly ever see too many apocalypse tanks etc in multiplayer but this game was refreshing when we found it bc console just doesn't have a wide range of RTS games hopefully that's starting to change bc I'm seeing alot more PC games jump to console even though they may be old to PC on some of them

I mean it's a lot better game than SS3 in my opinion and this is such a late comment haha. What's interesting about this game is its doctrines which is cool and don't mind the change. Finland had to be the hardest to master with 3 stars. The game is 7.5/10 for me. I think there will be ever a good game like SS2 to match it in my own opinion and SS1/Forever. Also, including the mods in those of course.
i am flabbergasted how these war games havent adopted conquest mode with a grand map to conquer, i dont understand, i am a begginner programmer and i can see ways these games could implement conquest mode into the game instead of these pre set battles that someone made and we are forced to play, i want a grand map in every single war game for me to consider it a banger, call to arms is a banger but only because of the conquest mode, asnd ive been coming to dis like call to arms ever since it became a world war 2 game, i am so ready for it to come back to the mordern era or atleast to the early 90s, anyway im planning to get every single one of these games and implimenting a modded conquest mode into their files myself cause this is rediculous

one thing you didn't mention is that none of the DLCs add anything except one commander to Skirmish/Multiplayer kinda ruins the game for me if the DLCs don't do anything worthwhile
One of the biggest ww2 rts let downs known to man. Lacking in maps, units, players and so fourth. The worst is the skirmish modes as you can't really do much.. games end fast and you can't enjoy long battles as they're all point based.

I only play this because its one of the only few games that has Italy as a faction. Then I found out it has the Finnish and the French. This is a WW2 faction lover's wet dream.

I love strategy. Gates of hell is great I love men of war and call to arms. But I haven’t been able to find something similar on console this is close too it

This is my first sudden strike game I've played! I love this game! I love how you don't build a base and macro your units around! I'm playing on ps4 and it's great!
@@twiglets2The left joy stick moves the cursor around the area or hold X and move left joy stick to select multiple units. After you select multiple units can click r3 to create a unit(brigade or groups of units) or hold r2 to bring up extra menu like grenades or repair. O is the confirm or move unit. X will select a single unit. Arrow keys switch between units. It sounds like a alot but it's setup well. The hardest thing is selecting multiple units easier with a mouse for sure but it's still not to bad! This weekend it's $8.99 on ps store that's the vanilla game with no dlcs which each dlc is around 9.99 except the pacific campaign which is 19.99! Ps don't have many rts games but sudden strike is a good choice! I also like turn based and they have order of battle ww2 which is $19.99 for base game and almost $200.00 bucks for all dlc!!! Which it's very accurate and has I believe every unit used and gotta keep a supply line up! But I heard you can pick up order of battle ww2 for pc for free!

I've just looked and Order of Battle WW2 is indeed free on PC, but I guess they make their money by luring you in then selling the many DLC's - Jesus Christ there are a lot of DLC's for that game!
@@twiglets2 It's not bad for console only downfall is that multiplayer for the game is dead on ps4! Order of battle seems to be a better option on pc! I would play it on ps4 but can't afford that lol! On Android there's a free game called panzer marshall that's similar to order of battle, which is nice on the go, not sure if they have it for iphone!
Sudden strike 1 and 2.....the reason i never went further is coz lack of masses. I loved a big army. Now its just a few here and there. It lost its spirit

@@twiglets2 basically everyone online match, the whole lobby will disconnect putting us in our own match with our teammates troops still in the match but frozen and not moving. Basically putting you in 1v3 situations forcing you to restart. This will happen for no reason, I'm usually hosting the server with me and two other friends ( I also have 500mbps speed internet.) It's a shame because me and friends really enjoy the game but if it continues to disconnect us every match we might just have to refund it. I haven't been able to find any info or fixes on the matter either. We are all playing on Xbox ones with one series x.

Ngl I played this game shortly after release and it was my first sudden strike game I played and my God it was just boring and super super medicore at best. Real shame I hope 5th game is better
It's a good fun game but the campaign missions do get tiresome being so outnumbered all the time especially in really big battles I just think why do I have so few men?
Falaise Pocket especially. Your ally has countless tanks and you only have a handful. It reminds me of the first US mission in Sudden Strike: Resource War where your ally is constantly spawning and spamming units while you just have to make do with what you're given.
@@twiglets2hoping you'd get to try out the Sudden Strike 4ever mod to hear your opinions on it. It makes the game much more realistic and hardcore, infantry and tanks can die in 1 shot, which puts much more importance in recon.
That's a tough question, not exactly like Red Alert, the closest I can think of is Iron Harvest. It's not exactly like Red Alert but the closest that I can think of from my limited knowledge of PS4!

@@twiglets2 A LOT more units on battlefield. And i remember how i felt when i tried the 3rd and 4th one after sudden strike 2, i felt disgusted. This was long time ago SS2 is really old you might not feel the same.
Plus the reinforcements incoming are x50 on some skirmish maps than in SS4, maybe its not accurate or beautiful but it was more fun. Im talking 500 hours in SS2 and 50 hours in SS3 and 4 together... At least thats my taste...

SUDDEN CRAP that is what this game is, made that when you play normal you just need to get rid of the game once completed because it losses the fun and the designers need a slap what a strategy game and I've played a lot but this takes the biscuit the worst thing is that you can see the enemy coming but it stops in the shadows and that is when the game gets total crap, game worth £5 just for the fun anymore and you are a mug spending anything on this game. Order of War was pretty good, but its definitely a fast paced strategy WWII game.

There's plenty of coverage of the Pacific theatre. It's North Africa that doesn't get any love from game devs.

A great often overlooked game. Micro-managing infantry is essential for recon or there is a real risk of running into a prepared enemy position.

Intrigued by the WW2 setting but I've literally never played an RTS in my life, also I'm on console so I know I'm not getting the ideal experience. Not sure whether I should take a risk on this.
I wish EA could use this game as a concept and source material for a new Command and Conquer game.
My biggest questions would be:
What I hated about company of heroes:
1. Can I give orders while under pause?
2. Can I zoom out properly?
What I missed in steel division:
1. Infantry can't take cover behind tanks.
2. No targeting with grenades
I have like 20 days on this game, you can pause, and order. Zooming in and out wasnt a problem for me, grandes are good but no cover
@@itamarmenashe5452 in company of heroes 2? You can zoom in to your hearts content, but you can't zoom out enough to make big-scale decisions comfortably, I find.
And with the pause button, it's in a stupid place on the keyboard, and the game doesn't allow you to remap
Bro you can give orders with the game in pause, just press the pause button (the one next to printscreen button)
@@jankutac9753 I use x-mouse button control to remap pause button to a mouse button.
As for zoom, you have mods like the excellent winkinger mod that allows to zoom out more and units can detect, see, shoot from greater distances.

I bought it on sale from GOG with all the DLC, played two missions, and haven't touched it for two years. It's still installed on my computer. I guess it just wasn't for me because it doesn't have real-world tactics that I can use. It felt like I was playing Red Alert 2 but without the ridiculous video cutscenes.
Haha those Red Alert 2 cutscenes bring back memories! I've enjoyed my time with Sudden Strike 4, the campaign was fun, but I think the reality is Ostfront has so much depth in comparison.
The graphics looks great but yes it looks like a Red Alert game.

@@twiglets2It all depends on the individual. RTS players are some of the most difficult to satisfy, and this one was just point-and-click with no strategy. I'm speaking for myself, of course. It doesn't make it a bad game, but I already played Codename Panzers.
But then again, I'm someone that enjoys very much close combat, Men of War, and combat missions for RTS as well as Syrian Warfare. I am more the exception than the rule.

As an entry into the genre its good, but for more experienced players it's a bit shallow!

excellent review, many thanks. I get plenty of hours of re-playability by trying to collect the Steam achievements. I found the use of wrong accents during voice-overs to "destroy the moment", things like thick American accents for Japanese dialogue.

I see some ppl not digging it but there is a limited amount of rts on console and honestly I was impressed with the explosions in the game, they looked good compared to others, I have noticed that if you don't take the time to learn the controls your stuck blobbing your units and that's just a disaster, so far I really enjoy it, it's better than red alert imo closest I can get to strategy, order of battle is a good strategy game, not the best graphics but good strategy nonetheless, down side is your stuck learning the game yourself bc the tutorial doesn't fit all of it in there and there's alot strategy wise
When playing on console is there a way to select different types of units so you can focus them correctly, or do you just select everything and send them all??
@@twiglets2 yes you can double tap the a button on Xbox one x and it will select all the same units or you can push down on the d-pad to select a unit type in the control group you've selected to use specifically that unit, good for flanking etc, if my control group 1 is say 3 panzers, 5 rifleman, and 2 medics, I could hit down on dpad till the rifleman are highlighted and send them in another direction or put them in a building, whatever you want to do with them, after you learn the controls it's not that difficult it's pretty enjoyable game on console, rts games can be a pain on console but I feel like they did the controls fairly well compared to others

@@twiglets2 it's fun on the Xbox one x, I would assume it's similar on others, we have 2 Xbox series x in the house 😂 one for me and one for my son, we play eachother sometimes or if somebody comes over we can all play, I think we enjoy this game more than red alert, they have their similarities but when I play red alert online I just don't like the fact that once you have a build scheme you can decimate your opponent with low tier units and it seems to be what everyone tries to do and it's effective, you will hardly ever see too many apocalypse tanks etc in multiplayer but this game was refreshing when we found it bc console just doesn't have a wide range of RTS games hopefully that's starting to change bc I'm seeing alot more PC games jump to console even though they may be old to PC on some of them

I mean it's a lot better game than SS3 in my opinion and this is such a late comment haha. What's interesting about this game is its doctrines which is cool and don't mind the change. Finland had to be the hardest to master with 3 stars. The game is 7.5/10 for me. I think there will be ever a good game like SS2 to match it in my own opinion and SS1/Forever. Also, including the mods in those of course.
I've only ever tried SS4, but recently several comments have suggested SS3 was superior so I would like to give it a try soon!

i am flabbergasted how these war games havent adopted conquest mode with a grand map to conquer, i dont understand, i am a begginner programmer and i can see ways these games could implement conquest mode into the game instead of these pre set battles that someone made and we are forced to play, i want a grand map in every single war game for me to consider it a banger, call to arms is a banger but only because of the conquest mode, asnd ive been coming to dis like call to arms ever since it became a world war 2 game, i am so ready for it to come back to the mordern era or atleast to the early 90s, anyway im planning to get every single one of these games and implimenting a modded conquest mode into their files myself cause this is rediculous

kinda ruins the game for me if the DLCs don't do anything worthwhile

One of the biggest ww2 rts let downs known to man. Lacking in maps, units, players and so fourth. The worst is the skirmish modes as you can't really do much.. games end fast and you can't enjoy long battles as they're all point based.

I only play this because its one of the only few games that has Italy as a faction. Then I found out it has the Finnish and the French. This is a WW2 faction lover's wet dream.

@@twiglets2The left joy stick moves the cursor around the area or hold X and move left joy stick to select multiple units. After you select multiple units can click r3 to create a unit(brigade or groups of units) or hold r2 to bring up extra menu like grenades or repair. O is the confirm or move unit. X will select a single unit. Arrow keys switch between units. It sounds like a alot but it's setup well. The hardest thing is selecting multiple units easier with a mouse for sure but it's still not to bad! This weekend it's $8.99 on ps store that's the vanilla game with no dlcs which each dlc is around 9.99 except the pacific campaign which is 19.99! Ps don't have many rts games but sudden strike is a good choice! I also like turn based and they have order of battle ww2 which is $19.99 for base game and almost $200.00 bucks for all dlc!!! Which it's very accurate and has I believe every unit used and gotta keep a supply line up! But I heard you can pick up order of battle ww2 for pc for free!

I've just looked and Order of Battle WW2 is indeed free on PC, but I guess they make their money by luring you in then selling the many DLC's - Jesus Christ there are a lot of DLC's for that game!

I would play it on ps4 but can't afford that lol! On Android there's a free game called panzer marshall that's similar to order of battle, which is nice on the go, not sure if they have it for iphone!

Sudden strike 1 and 2.....the reason i never went further is coz lack of masses. I loved a big army. Now its just a few here and there. It lost its spirit

This is the first I've heard of multiplayer problems so thank you for sharing. Are you still experiencing issues or is it a temporary bug do you think?
@@twiglets2 basically everyone online match, the whole lobby will disconnect putting us in our own match with our teammates troops still in the match but frozen and not moving. Basically putting you in 1v3 situations forcing you to restart. This will happen for no reason, I'm usually hosting the server with me and two other friends ( I also have 500mbps speed internet.) It's a shame because me and friends really enjoy the game but if it continues to disconnect us every match we might just have to refund it. I haven't been able to find any info or fixes on the matter either. We are all playing on Xbox ones with one series x.

It's a good fun game but the campaign missions do get tiresome being so outnumbered all the time especially in really big battles I just think why do I have so few men?
@Airyed I felt the same. I was surprised at the quality of visuals and fun combat but it does go on a bit...and I couldn't get into the multiplayer!
Falaise Pocket especially. Your ally has countless tanks and you only have a handful. It reminds me of the first US mission in Sudden Strike: Resource War where your ally is constantly spawning and spamming units while you just have to make do with what you're given.

@@twiglets2hoping you'd get to try out the Sudden Strike 4ever mod to hear your opinions on it. It makes the game much more realistic and hardcore, infantry and tanks can die in 1 shot, which puts much more importance in recon.

@@twiglets2 A LOT more units on battlefield. And i remember how i felt when i tried the 3rd and 4th one after sudden strike 2, i felt disgusted. This was long time ago SS2 is really old you might not feel the same.
Plus the reinforcements incoming are x50 on some skirmish maps than in SS4, maybe its not accurate or beautiful but it was more fun. Im talking 500 hours in SS2 and 50 hours in SS3 and 4 together... At least thats my taste...

SUDDEN CRAP that is what this game is, made that when you play normal you just need to get rid of the game once completed because it losses the fun and the designers need a slap what a strategy game and I've played a lot but this takes the biscuit the worst thing is that you can see the enemy coming but it stops in the shadows and that is when the game gets total crap, game worth £5 just for the fun anymore and you are a mug spending anything on this game. If you know someone who has this game borrow it don't buy!!!
