"My first real keyboard after a Casio.." 😂😂 love the video man I agree. Just bought a Montage 7 2 weeks ago
Haha we all had to have a Casio at some point lol thanks for watching! Enjoy the Montage, hoping I can get one soon!
@@AndrewMcKain My very first was a YAMAHA PS400 PortaSound with original case.. for the time.. even today.. unique! No other portable mini, at least I have seen, has a case.
@@miguelrejas5034 nice! I haven’t played that one before
I'm really glad you did this video because I used to just like any keybord that I saw but when you did this It really opened my eyes to what it can do and now it's one of my most favorites and when you see Review videos on these they don't really give you the depth of it and that's what you did. Thank you Andrew.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad the video was helpful!
Love this video, thank you for sharing your gifts & talents with the world Andrew. You thoroughly explained the model and played some really nice tunes. Thank you again and God bless 😇
Really appreciate it and thanks for watching!!
I think anything you play will be the best. Great work.
Thanks a lot!!!
Andrew! I love your playing all the way. Thanks for showing off the polyphony in the montage. Those strings are soooo expressive. I'm glad to see the power grand & MKS20 is stocked in too. Thanks for sharing. God bless you!
Thanks a lot my brother! The Power Grand and MKS aren’t actually in there originally but they can be added in
I feel the same way about my Korg Nautilus… I guess it doesn’t matter what you play as long as you enjoy it and are inspired… Very nice playing…
Thank you!! And yes you're right, it's all a matter of preference. I've heard a lot of great things about the Nautilus, I have to check it out someday!
You're an absolutely phenomenal player and demonstrator and you have a great down to earth personality! You'd make the cheapest instrument sound great with your fabulous chops! Keep up the great work and God bless you!
That means a lot!! Thanks so much!!
Absolutely he'd make a low end vintage Casio sound really good too.
@@KirbyDTrim appreciate you brother!!
You've got great songwriting skills bro! And I truly dig your technical skills at both the piano and your knowledge of the Montage!
Thanks a lot!! I really appreciate it!!
Man I appreciate you making this video and that you used more than just key patches. I have a Roland P-330 and been using it with mines mainly because of the EP1 and EP2 but have searching the comments I knew someone had the same question about the MKS patches. Thanks for sharing that link. I too have the MODX8 and love it.
No problem!! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely awesome playing, Andrew !!! Any keyboard can sound the best if you're playing it !!!
That really means a lot, thank you!!!!
@@AndrewMcKain good
Need a video of you jamming out for an hour or two while I study, love your playing and style, came across your video randomly, much blessings to you and your family! 🙏🙌
Wow thanks a lot man!!! I’m planning to work on some prayer/meditation music soon hopefully 🙏🏾
Andrew, Fantastic playing! Great demonstration. I own a Korg Kronos and it also has the Setlist functionality you enjoy on the Montage. I do think it’s easier on the Montage to quickly plugin an additional sound layer like you demonstrated.
Thanks a lot for watching!! Yea I personally think the Montage is a lot more user friendly to navigate
Great stuff. Loved hearing “the yellow jacket” reference!
Thanks a lot!!
Great review my dude! The playing you already know my dude!!
Appreciate it bro!!!
I got the MODX but what made me watch your entire video is your playing! Just glorious, Bro! :)
*MODX 6 or 7 are the perfect gigging boards ever.*
Wow thanks a lot!!!
Forget the board, you’re cold blooded on those keys Andrew! Respect from London, UK
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Another from the UK who has just discovered you. Absolutely amazing sir.

Your playing is unreal man. So incredible
That means a lot, thank you!
Thanks Andrew, enjoyed your video, keep them coming....greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks for watching!!
I was about to sell my modx7 since I use the Native Instruments S61 plus Macbook Pro but the playability of my old Mo is so smooth that I've decided to keep it based on your vlog. thank you Andrew.
Thanks for the introduction. She's a sweet board.
Thanks for watching!! Definitely a great board
Un pur délice toi et le montage, amazing together ^_^
I've never heard a montage sound this good 😫 I used to play the montage at a church in Toronto before now.
Thanks! It's really great IMO
You are an excellent keyboardist and very knowledgable about the Montage. You've almost persuaded me to buy one. 😊
Thanks so much!!
Bro God bless you. I'm loving all these progressions. You and Jamal Heartwell man. Keep it up bro. God bless you. 🙌
Thanks so much!!! And Jamal is a legend!
The Motif does let you select sound immediately, but you basically have to remember what to select in the bank of buttons on the right. I still have a Motif 6. But I have a MODX+ that should be arriving tomorrow. Can't wait!
Great playing man! and thanks for reviewing the board..
Brillant demo, best i have seen. Damn great stuff.
Wow, thanks a lot!! I really appreciate it!!!
Yamaha need too hire you bro. Beautiful playing skills and great information details on keyboard
Really appreciate that bro!! Pray for me lol
This was so helpful in helping me choose a keyboard!!! Thank you :)
So glad I could help!! Enjoy!
Hands of gold, sir👍. That S700, still one of my favorites.
Really appreciate it!!
You're a great player. Thanks for the demo
Thanks a lot!!
Awesome overview Andrew and brilliant playing!
Thank you!!
Really loved your demonstration but could you do a tutorial on your demonstration on piano sounds you use and when you connect with your computer.
Good stuff bro. This is phenomenal.
Really appreciate it!!!
Great video! You should do one where you show your praise and worship patches
Thanks for watching! I’m gonna try to do that soon
Excelente demonstração do Montage e dos sons do teclado. Muito obrigado!- Excellent demonstration of Montage and keyboard sounds. Thank you very much (from Brazil)
Gracías! Appreciate you watching!!
Hi Andrew, good stuff. I also have a modx8, I agree with you about the quality. If you are able to upload a detailed video on how you connect your modx8 to Mac etc, that would be much appreciated. Either way, keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! I think I’ll make a video doing that since a few people want to see it
Great review. I’m interested in purchasing this keyboard but some customers have poor reviews. Such as the keys malfunctioning. I guess I’ll find out soon.
Thank You
Thank you!! So I bought mine used and a couple keys were broken, but I’m not sure if that’s a manufacturing problem or a problem with how it was kept by its previous owner.
Great playing ! Thanks for the video. Awesome keyboard!
Thank you!
Amazing playing, great review, and subscribed!
Thanks a lot!!!
Great demo bro! Montage
has a great sound!
Thanks a lot!! And I agree
I was not really interested in learning about the Montage. I just completed the video because of your awesome playing and relaxed presentation. Kudos!
Really appreciate that, thank
you!!
I have a Modx8 and Modx7. They sound awesome and I like they layout. The only thing I don’t like about them is the Seamless Sound Switching doesn’t work for all sounds and sometimes switching between scenes the volume is abrupt. Roland has mastered this.
Dope video !!! Would like a video of how to setup the laptop with the montage as you did
Thanks for watching!! All I had to do was plug the laptop to the Montage with a printer cord and it played right through it without having to do anything else
@@AndrewMcKain thanks bro
Demonstrated well by a brilliant talent in this young brother.🙏🏾💪🏾✊🏾👍🏾🎹🎼
Really Appreciate it!!!
Great review and playing!

Hey Andrew, I agree. Yamaha builded up a great instrument. I love to play it to. Regards from Germany, Michael
Yea it’s great! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic playing! You have such a deep song bank. I guess that’s what comes with years of experience playing
Thanks a lot!!! And yea that's 20+ years of learning songs lol
Great stuff as always doc!
Appreciate it bro!!!
Great video, the Montage is a great board as well!
Yea I love it bro!
Can you do a vid explaining how to connect laptop to the montage and what programs to use for the piano sounds
I've decided to treat myself to the Montage 7 in White in a couple of weeks. A completely different world to my beloved SY85 and have been using soft synths for a while but really looking forward to getting my hands on this serious piece of kit.
Congrats in advance!! You’ll love it, I’m jealous that you’re getting a white one lol
@@AndrewMcKain If I'm going to be investing so much in a synth, I'm gonna get the best that I can and the white Limited Edition version is just an absolutely gorgeous machine. There's no way I could get the standard version. I would rather go without and wait. I know the difference is only cosmetic but if I bought the regular Montage, every time I saw a white version, I would only be filled with contempt for mine, sadness and regret. It's pathethic I know but true, lol. You're welcome to judge. :-)
Is the Montage sequencer difficult to learn??
@@ParkerCharlesGabriel Not really, but I'm still getting my head around the 10000 arpeggios and using Scenes. If you've got Montage Connect you can transfer all the tracks directly from your Montage directly into your DAW, which is awesome. It's gonna take me years to get through all the features on this machine.
I have a Kawai MP11se in my living room because I love its grand piano action. I'd love to replace it with a Montage 8 but didn't want to give up the action so I ordered a Montage 7WH for my family room. I'm constantly wondering if I should get the 8 instead of the 7. Any advice?
Wonderful Playing Bro. 🙌🏽
Thanks so much! Glory to God!
I had a motif xf8 sold it during covid hard times for $2500 what a steal this dude got. I can only imagine the sounds that come out of this one. One day I'll own it. Yamaha is pretty solid on their prices, I watched the motif xf8 for 5 years and the price never went down, and one day I bit the bullet lol. Hands down best keyboard I ever touched. Good piano playing btw.
Yea the prices don't drop too much, I had been watching the prices on the Montage for a while and I saw it for a steal price one day and had to grab it lol I actually had the XF8 before and got that for about $1,900. They were both secondhand, and I got them both from Facebook Marketplace
@@AndrewMcKain I picked up a second hand Montage about a year ago for 1800$ it was a Montage 6, oh boy what a beast this has been to learn, it's deeply complex. But today in hindsight it has been the best synth purchase I ever did. I have all kinds of synths, Korgs, Rolands, etc. Nothing even comes close to the "power" of the sound that Montage have. Also the keybed of the montage is nothing less than legendary, it has this special feel about it that is so comfortable to play on.
@@joonglegamer9898 yea I agree. The Montage is an incredible synth, I got the Montage 8 used at $2000 and it’s been great, love the keybed on all of them
Bro, you sound really good !! Love it ❤️👌
Thanks so much!!! I appreciate you watching!!
Love your playing. I gotta spend more time with the montage. I still love my XF8; just can’t part ways with it. But I can see why, tho. 🤨🎶👍🏾
Thanks a lot!! The XF8 is a great keyboard and I've had it before, but in my opinion, Yamaha took it to a whole different level with the Montage as far as what it's capable of doing
Damn brother. Your technique wows me everytime I listen to you.
Wow really appreciate that!!
Thank you for this video Andrew, I was just asking a few fellow musician which keyboard to upgrade to. I have the Motif xf8, I was looking at the Montage as well.
Amazing playing brother! I love my Montage!
Appreciate that brother!
Great review!!!!!!!!!
THOSE CHORDS 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Appreciate it man!!
@@AndrewMcKain do some tutorials of gospel piano please. Thanks.
@@go.dalida I’m gonna try to make some soon 👌🏾
We need a video of how you set up your laptop, to play thru the montage!
I can try to make that soon
Great chops, audio started clipping a bit once you started playing from the laptop.
I love the way you play man.
Really appreciate it!!
Reassistindo pela 5° vez, incansavelmente. Muito bom meu mano
Muito bom mesmo!
Great Montage demonstration! I am in a bit of a quandary - although a keyboard player all my life, using weighted keybeds (Kurzweil, Yamaha) I convinced myself I really wanted to switch to the high quality synth-type keys most of the folks with Montage 6 and 7 models raved about. I am older now (argh!), have some arthritis in my fingers, and wanted to be able to play even faster, lol! WELL, I got one of the only new untouched Montage 7's available right now, and it's great but... I am having a very hard time getting used to the synth keys! Realized as much as I thought this would work for me, I am first & foremost a PIANO player - and don't think the Montage 7 will really enable me to play it to its highest potential. If you should see this Andrew, do you have any thoughts re the weighted Montage 8 and the other non-weighted Montage boards?
Also not happy with the racket even the synth keys make while playing them. For some reason I thought the synth keys would be a lot quieter, ie for recording voice while I play - they seem just about as noisy as the weighted ones, just a different type of sound. Also being that none are available, I would have to return this Montage 7 within about 2 weeks, and then wait maybe 6 months to get the Montage 8!
Hey man! I definitely understand what you mean. I'm a piano player mainly as well and I prefer to have an 88 key keyboard unless I'm recording synths/aux. The Montage 7 keys do feel pretty good, especially compared to the MODX 7 and other semi weighted boards, but that wouldn't be my choice for mostly playing piano. The light weight boards work for some people by my preference is weighted.
Sounds great! Amazing skills as well!!! Blessings!!!
Thanks a lot man!!
Great Review and Playing, truly agree that montage is the best keyboard, always been my favorite board. Btw can you tell me what pluggins and the samples that you use on 12:55 and 13:20
Thanks a lot man!! The first one was Ravenscroft and the second one was the Dark S from the S90ES plugin
Nice 👌 I’m getting a Montage 6 this week to go with my CP88. Starting to get offered some more work now things are getting back to ‘normal’!! I would consider a MODX but the keybed is too ‘bargain basement’ for me.
Nice!! That's a great setup!!
Pick up my MODX6+ tomorrow from Sweetwater. The FA06 that it’s replacing has a far worse keybed. It’s my top board with a CP73 below.
Hi Andrew, I love the demonstration. I have a MODX 6 but the sounds are as rich as yours sound. Are you using a sustain pedal and other effects? I am curious as to the setup you have. Thank you
Thanks Andrew ! ❤❤👌👌🌲🌲
Amazing playing. the Montage 8 has been calling my attention for quite some time now. i got a roland fantom G7 that i have had for years but the sounds are getting old for me.
Thank you!! And yea the Montage is a really great board
great playing man!!!! :-O
Thanks a lot man!!!
Great demonstration
Thanks for watching!!
Am looking for a keyboard online and I bumped into this video ❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!!
I love keyboards and am blown away at all they can do, especially my korg kronos. the only problem is I don't know how to play them
It takes some time to get familiar but once you are, its amazing all that you can do. Im still not close to exploring all the possibilities
Nice bro...you doing well!!!
Thanks bro!!!
Thanks for making this vid man, love your playing! Trying to decide between the Korg Kronos 2 and the Montage, I’ve had the Korg M50 for years but it got damaged during my moving process so now I need to upgrade! I also have the Korg SV1, keep up the great work! Subscribing now!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!!! The Kronos is really nice but in a lot of ways it’s outdated, I think you’ll really love the Montage!
@@AndrewMcKain what do you think of the montage vs CP 88? I know one is a workstation and the other is more of a stage piano hahah but it’s still hard to choose
@@DavidGalvanMusic I’d take the Montage overall because it can do a lot more. But if you’re just needing a keyboard to play strictly piano, the CP88 would be a good option
Just ordered a MODX6 which is probably best bang for the buck. Seeing I'm deeply imvested in the Yamaha ecosystem with a MX61, MOX8 and a few Reface boards it will be a fantastic addition.
@@holygeneration7 I tried the MODX6 at a local store before ordering. Agreed the keybed isn't the greatest but there are far worse and for what the unit gives at that price point, in my particular case a lightly used model for $875, there are ZERO complaints to be had.
@@rjakiel73 I pick up my MODX6+ from Sweetwater tomorrow 😊. It’s replacing a Roland FA06, which has a horrible keybed. The MODX has a way better keybed than the FA06…
@@ckatheman you're gonna love it.
@@rjakiel73 will find out in a few hours :)
Great piano play. Great guy. 👍🏽
Really appreciate that brother!!
Montage is a great synthesizer. I have the Modx7 and it has the same sound engines. However I don’t like Yamaha’s “Seamless Sound Switching” because in scenes you can only do 4 sounds to seamless switch and sometimes it jumps the sound volume when switching. I like how Roland and Korea does Seamless Sound Switching. It just work no matter what sounds you are using and up to 16 per scene.
I’ve noticed the seamless switching is good in Roland, I don’t use scenes much on the Montage but I definitely see what you mean
The MODX can only Seamlessly Switch up to 4 parts while the Montage can Seamlessly Switch up to 8
GREETINGS.......Thanks for the nice review. Please, would the MONTAGE come with a SMOOTH SOUND TRANSITION feature.
How’s it going! It does have a smooth transition the first time you switch from one sound to another
Hey Andrew, saw you on Julian's vlog a while back. I didn't know the two of you knew each other. Both of you rocked that shout session! Anyway, a few questions.
1) Why use Logic instead of Mainstage? Any particular reason? I am used to seeing keyboardists using mainstage when playing live with VST instruments and sometimes even Ableton if they are triggering backing tracks as well as playing live.
2) What is your dream dual-tier setup? A FANTOM-7 with a MONTAGE-8? A MONTAGE-7 with a Nord Stage 3 88? Would love to know! (multiple answers allowed)
3)Have you switched from using sound rack modules to using a laptop for your external sounds? Or do you still use modules like the MKS-20 and Motif-Rack?
Check out this brand called Dexibell. They were formed by a group of ex-Roland Italian engineers and probably have the most powerful and versatile hardware in the stage piano market. Their samples are top-notch and have extensive editing capabilities with modelling technology. So do check them out in your free time.
God bless you Andrew.
Hey bro!! Yessir me and Julian go way back, that's little bro! I don't really have a reason not to use Mainstage, I've actually never really used it lol but everyone else I know does. I just happened to have Logic first and I've stuck with it. Ableton is definitely good for running stems, I don't use it for VST's but I know you can. My dream dual set up would probably be a Roland Fantom 7 with a Montage if I needed aux sounds or a Nord Electro on top of a Montage is I'm just playing mains. I have checked out the Dexibell and from the videos they sound really great! I've been wanting to play one for the longest. I only know of one place in Maryland that has them, so I hope I can make that trip and play one one day.
Thus Amazing .Please a tutorial on to use the scenes on the montage.
Man, it’s astounding. Regular po folks like me have to get by with humbler tools.
It took me a while to be able to get one, hopefully you'll get one soon!
Dope video! Would you mind sharing how you loaded the mKs and powergrand into the board?
I got it from the guy who owns this channel ruclips.net/video/CA0eiWMEFdI/видео.html
Andrew, I have been agonizing at which Keyboard I should stay with. I have a hybrid setup, Kurzweil K2500, Montage 8, Roland XV5080, and of course Ableton Live 11 with Komplete and kontrol sounds. I was trying to determine if I should sell my K2500, and replace with the K2700. However, you have convinced me here to stick with the Montage 8. The sounds on the K2500 are good Kurzweil sounds, but the 2700 isn't over and above the Montage 8....therefore why add to what I already have. Your video proved that I was a knucklehead, not recognizing the power of the Montage. I think that I will stick with the current setup, unless of course you have a compelling reason for me to change out the K2500 and add the K2700. Felt it is throwing money against a "not so material" outcome. Thanks for this, and smooth playing my man, very smooth.
Imma have it one day✊🏾😤
I've had the Montage 6 for a year now, I totally agree with you. It's worth more than the money. It's my favorite all-around keyboard out to this day. I also love to record beats with the sounds on it. It has so much greatness on it. I don't play live as much as I used to. But that will be changing when I get back to Dallas next year.
Cheers from South Korea.
Thanks for supoort!! And I totally agree, there’s so much on there that I haven’t tapped into yet
Hey man! fantastic review and playing! Question for ya... I'm a nord guy (I play nord stage 3's for gigs), but I've recently been subbing for wedding bands that play top 40 tracks/transition seemlesly between songs. Its tricky scrolling through patches, while pulling up charts, while playing the current song. I'm wondering if you're able to locate sounds easily on the montage? Like if I had a 50 different patches for 50 different songs, if they're easy to locate on the screen without having to scroll/type?
my flow right now is to have a set list with my patch number next to the song, put my patches in order of the setlist, and then pull up the chart and find the next patch. The issue is when the songs are called out of order, and I have to find the patch on the set list, and then get there... Do you do any work like that? or do you usually live inside of 1 performance patch and blend faders within scenes?
Thanks! For me it’s easy, putting all your most used sounds on a Live Set makes it really easy to access and beyond that you can put other sounds on your Favorites
Beautiful playing. How’d you get the power grand sample on there btw?
Thanks a lot!! This guy named Adrian Charras here on RUclips converted it for me. I contacted him on Facebook
yessir. I have the Montage 8 and MODX 7 two great boards. I also have some Nord, MKS, MK80 and Power Grand samples inside. What other ones apart from the 4 i mentioned do you have inside the Montage?
Dope! I have those, there’s a C7 & surroundings sample pack I have, I have the Bosendorfer pack from Yamaha, I have the Kurzweil piano sound and I have a pack of Omnisphere pads as well

Yes, the best keyboard from the world: Yamaha Montage ! Very nice video, thanks!
Hi Andrew - great video. I have the Montage 8, but for church I still prefer my Alesis and my Korg N364 for their B-3 sounds, esp. with Leslie effects. On the Montage, the mod wheel only seems to add coarse tremolo to the B-3 patches. Have you found a good way to add Leslie, then save it in a real-time knob or slider? (I wrote to Yamaha but only got a "you can change anything you want" answer). Thank you!
You mean Alesis Recital Pro...
I have a Kurzweil SP4-8 as main piano and master controller. A Karma for arrangements and Synth pads and arpeggiator. Finally a vintage Yamaha sy22 for atmosphere design. Plus a midi Alesis v25 and Ableton Live (to alternate). Greetings from Lima.
Which daw are yo using on the laptop please?
Awesome demo, impressed!!
Thanks!! I’m using Logic and running my plugins out of there
