both sounding great!
both soundig definitely different each other.
so... I need both :-)))))
Sure and I need one billion dollars...

I like software with mainstage better! For me, it’s makes this hardware unnecessary, but I can see how they can be of use to others.✌🏾
No talking.. so good 👍
What a great time to be alive. So many choices ... all of them good.
Immagine Mozzart playing these lol.
Both very nice. Something subtle about Yamaha that makes me lean that way.
I always prefer YAMAHA but fantom sounds amazing here
This is what you get when the piano player is better than the instruments. So good!
It's hard to choose, they respectively have their own great sounds. I think I just have to get them both! ;) Thank you for the demo.
To sum it all up the fantom is used more on tracks because of its compressed sounds. Not to mention they sound radio ready straight out of the keyboard. The Yamaha sounds good as well but for live events because the sounds are so amplified with eqs so it’s meant to impress right out the keyboard.
Thanks for helping me articulate my thoughts. I love them both but each have their own place in different situations
@@haroldbrooks4235 True... The Fantom lends itself better to live performance and having some unique desirable features over Montage...while Montage has just a slightly better sound quality, IMO...
Here's a major difference: The Sequencer
- The Fantom cannot transpose the pattern in real time
- Montage recognizes real-time chords
This changes the workflow a lot - live !
Not if you dont use a sequencer live lol.
@@paulmapp8306 nice point, same with the keybed, lol.
do u recomend XPS-30 to make covers from The Killers and Coldplay? i'd use strings, piano, pad and synth. Thanks.
perhaps the transposing option will come in a firmware update
I like the full sound of the montage, however I also enjoy the electronic sound that the Fantom pads have.
I never met a synth I didn't like. They both sound great! You are fortunate to have both! An interesting video comparing sound engines . If I had to pick just one I have to go with the Fantom for work flow and incredible amount of features.
yes! the best option is: Montage and Fantom! and yes i'm very lucky ;)
Damn good synthesizers, damn good keyboardist!
I second the camp that looks forward to this video!
Both of them sound exceptional ,this comparison the Roland wins as it is noticeably heavier in the bottom end and a bit brighter in the highs with just a little more character in the mids...excellent comparison video
Really? I noticed more lower end on the Yamaha
😂😊
They both sound out of this world!
Samples, sounds programming and superknob of Yamaha, layout, interface and workstation architecture of Roland.
Both are superb in every way. For me I would use the montage for the studio and the fantom for live work. The slight thinness and forward sounding Roland would project better sound wise in a band situation.
But it's down to personal preference as always.
this is fascinating; I won an old Motif, and played an old Fantom on tour; the Yamaha stuff seems more 'hyped', and the Roland stuff seems more 'realistic'... both pretty great...
Would you happen to be selling either one? 🤔
Absolutely true!
Yamaha had it over the Roland (but only slightly,) up until the point of the Fantasia patch. That is definitely a Roland signature sound! All sounds after that, it becomes even a closer match!
I think in grand pianos yamaha is better
You’re right
both have their charms! I have a Yamaha Moxf keyboard. I felt like ( and still do ) that it had one of the best sounding saxaphone patches I've heard ever. Pianos sound realistic to me.
Really hard to choose because they are both fantastic. You think you've decided and then it changes when another sound is picked. Probably at a push I would take the Montage
Awesome performance. Great songs. It’s a joy to watch you play music.
Both are excellent and extremely good so personal preference takes precedence on this
You can't go wrong with any of those.
I had both Roland Fantom G8 and Motif XS8, they are amazing.
For playing live, I prefer Roland Fantom sounds that cut through the Band right out the box and alot of people praised the sound coming from it.
When I use Yamaha on the other hands, only a few give comment about it. It seems like Roland did a good job producing the sound engine.
Both sound brilliant in their own ways, but the Pluck Synth on the Yamaha is better (in my opinion).
PS: I own a Fantom.
Both sounds great I need all of them .
Yamaha has created incredible sounds lately, the yamaha has a different magic, both on the syth and rhythm box keyboards.
Fantom daha iyi ya
I pick the Montage, more depth and the Piano's and E Piano's have so much more expression. I programmed over 1000 sounds for the DX7 back in 87'. Noticed your pic with the Moog 55. You program any patches? I am on Arturia's default sounds of the 55.
Unfortunately i’m not an owner of a System 55 😢 so sad 😅 only for the pic, but maybe one day.. 😉
Yes
After all, YAMAHA sounds good when FM sound source is inserted.
I use ROLAND as the master keyboard and YAMAHA as the sub.
I wish this video would have gone on for hours. So good. So enjoyable. I liked more sounds on Roland. Just by a few … both are great.
The montage has that reverb pattern which makes it's sound out of this world.
Loved the video. As a 40yr air keyboard player, both sounded great.
Both sound fantastic. I would have to flip a coin to pick one or the other. Really great.
As someone who repairs these for a living, I love both. They both are quality instruments.
Do you work for a dealer, or a general electronics repair shop? Am curious to know where to turn if one of my babies decides to go out on me!
@@ryanpresley7491 yes. I work for a dealer. I don't know about other repair facilities, but the one I work at has good resources and my fellow technicians and I really care about our customers.
There's something about Yamaha's that makes them ROCK solid. I have both Yamaha and Roland synths. I maintain the Roland Keybeds ALL the time, but the Yamaha synths lives on without a flaw, my oldest Yamaha is 33+ years old now, still rocks without a single keyboard defect.
That said - you will be SUPER happy with EITHER of the synths. You can literally create each sound similar on each instrument, they're both wicked advanced, 100's of menues to dive into, you'll be lost for YEARS, I pretty much guarantee you this.
Can say the same about roland that ive had, the x7 had it since release and been gigging with it, its a tank. Hope the fantom is the same!👍
Gracias por el comentario, nunca tuve un teclado tanto tiempo como 33 años. Que teclado es ese que tenés hace tanto . El teclado que tengo más viejo es un Roland RD300gx hace aproximadamente 12 años. Saludos.
@@edgardocasa7535 Hi! The longest I've kept a keyboard is 13 years, it was a Roland D-50.
@@joonglegamer9898 ok, teclado muy popular. Hermoso. Tank you.
There's just something about the Yamaha sounds. Its deep and the tones are rich. I was actually waiting to hear the E. Piano sounds which I know Roland keyboards for but still not as rich as this Yamaha montage.
Not a keys player by any stretch, but it sounds like the Yamaha wouldn't need much or any post work to fit in a mix, it already stands out. Someone mentioned in the comments that it seems 'hyped'. Maybe that's intentional? However after watching a different video on ease of use, the Roland seems like it would be a breeze to navigate and operate. I'm really appreciating videos like this to help make a decision on which direction to go for a purchase. THANK YOU!
Thank you so much! Very helpful
Buying right now I'd pick Fantom, if only for the layout, sequencer, raw power and software upgrade potential. Both sound fantastic, and any sonic differences are not enough to make much of a difference other than side-by-side, in my opinion of course. We all hear and interpret things differently for different reasons.
Hi
I own a montage 8
Software upgrades are spectacular
Easy to do .
I was thinking about the Roland Fantom
After this I think I’ll look closer at the Roland Jupiter X .
The sequencer on the Fantom isnt "all that". its a 32 measure clip sequencer. You have to get your head away from linear sequencing. The Fantom is not a workstation. Its a synthesiser. It is offered as a synthesiser. It has polyphony issues due there only being 256 partials available and not 256 note polyphony. Some "tones" have 3 or 4 partials active and throw some reverb in there, it soon starts to clip. Dont get me wrong, I love it but it does let itself down in some areas.
@@Bikerboythousand to a point, though Ive never run into poly issues - I know how it works and manage the resources, but I get your viewpoint. What it DOES do better than anything else available is integrate with other equipment live or in a studio. if you use multiple synths and in particular modules (or indeed lots of VSTs) its by far the better option.
@@paulmapp8306 Do the LED illuminated faders work well for controlling external gear via MIDI CC and/or CV? Those faders are a huge part of the draw for me. And I don't suppose you've tried the 88 key version? Is the hammer action comparable to the RD-2000?
@@rdean150 its the same keybed as the rd, PHA5. Midi cc for some reason is restricted to 95 - you cant assign anything higher which can be a pain, but they do work well
Great vid. I can't decide between the two lol. I'm heavy into synths, and would like to have navigation and recording not too complex to get used to. No live, just in studio compositions. Which do you recommend?
Fantom for sure
They do sound different with the Montage a little darker on some sounds but I guess it is down to personal preference though I tend to lean to Yamaha but not much between them.
Really good comparison! So close there's almost nothing in it... if I had to choose, I'd want to see what the UI was like to use and pick based on that. That's how close I found them!
I know that’s a though question but which one did you find easier to edit the parameters and sounds? I mean the that has more options right on your face to work with
I like the sounds of the montage when you played acoustic instruments and some pads but I prefer fantom for most of electronic sounds.
Love the piano on the Fantom but mostly everything else on the Montage, they are both great and you would be good with either one.
Hi. Love your reviews! I feel you are one of the very few people that give honest reviews. Thank you. Question: Does the Montage allow me to use an imported into the Montage a type of drums I heard abroad as part of the background beat?
Thank you.
Montage tones is the verry emotional
Lovely playing of the Rhodes my friend.
At the montage, yes.
@@godot5082 You can hear the Rhodes sound is definitely a Roland sound these days, because of owning Rhodes
That was a dope demonstration.
Roland yields the best synth sounds
Have a Roland FA06 and love the sampling pads and can record long songs onto them stored on the USB stick. Does the Fantom 06 have this same capabilities? Records onto a removable device?
Nice video!
Sir I have fantom x6 keyboard but, i can't use as a midi keyboard in windows 10 becouse that is older keyboard midi driver is New version not available yet please slove my problm how to use my fantom x6 keyboard as a midi..
Nice comparison 😀
What is the function of the device that you are activating above the Montage?
Fantom sound like a very good sinthesizer, but montage sound like both, a Synth and a very good Sampler
With so much processing power on both keyboard and the quality of the raw materials you’ll be for sure able to make them sound pretty similar to each other. The personal preferences and the sentiment are the most decisive factors when you make your choice.
That Roland signature sound is amazing. The presets are amazing.
Both are awesome.
Montage SLAYS.
I liked the Montage strings pad and electric, prefered the Fantom for the rest. Even so, there must be so many string patches on the Fantom maybe there's one I'd like more. I'm still playing an old G7 but might upgrade. I think the biggest thing I want is grand pianos and the Korg sounds excellent to me but haven't compared back to back.
I am fortunate enough to own both of them. They both sound amazing and beautiful in their own way!
Yes! I also have both in my setup! ;)
I am considering getting one of these keyboards. Which one has better piano sounds and sequencer in your opinion?
@@joemiguel6576 if you need a more complete sequencer go with Fantom ;)
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Than you
They both sound incredibly good! I am trying to put my finger on what the difference between two comes down to, and I think that Fantom seems to have a bit beefier low end. It sounds warmer, fuzzier, and heavier to me. Montage, is crispier, more crystalline punchier, and handles the FM type sounds and piano especially beautifully!
nice play, nice sound :)
With a bit of an eq adjustment it would be a fair comparison between the two keyboards since they have different samples of similar or like sounds. Both boards are A list choices depending on your preference. Great demo.
Both awesome.
Both sound good, so I suppose it would come down to which has the most features and then compare price to performance.
Good video, very similar sounds :) I have them both.
what song is being played at 1:39?? it sound familiar but i cant put a name to it
YAMAHA
sound on more bass and opened.
For me YAMAHA.... even i am KORG pa4x user😁...but i regonize....yamaha make's most warmer keyboards
yeah the yamaha has a more live feel to it but I like the features on the fantom alot more but I'm a fan of both
In this category of synth (Kronos, Montage, Moog One, Fantom 2019) is it useful to make this kind of comparaison? Since, we be able to ajust each sound like you like. For exemple, adjust the harmonic via the range of hertz, adjust via waves type, adjust via ADSR, etc.... OK, it is for pro, but these machines are not for a pro, or semi-pro at least?
There are different engine and taste. Both are amazing.
Can you adjust the Hz in both machines to edit global tuning hz to 432 hz or 528 hz etc, vs standard 440 hz?
If so, is it per patch or a global option?
Thanks!
@@HammyGirl999 even my kawai ES8 piano can do that.. so should those two.
Both are very nice and awesome..
Ambos tem sonoridades interessantes e particularidades sonoras aplicáveis a variados gostos e estilos.
Thank you for the video.
I’ve been an happy user of Sipario since its first appereance on the market, but
I’d have a big question 😁
Let’s say you have this setup: one of these workstations + another keyboard synth + an expander and/or an ipad (no Sipario) for live gigs.
You have to manage all midi zones, split points, layers, messages, sustain pedal and sevaral controls, with your masterkeyboard.
Which is the best in terms of midi routing capabilities?
I am searching the net to hopely find a deep comparison about mdi functions, not sounds.
😊
I pick the montage by far. Thanks for the comparison
Hi, may I ask, what are you using for changing the programs (the little blue one witch is standing on the montage)
siparioX by Lab4music
I have question. What instrument has most amount of voices/tones in it. I know roland fantom comes up there, any other?
How do you hook up to get the sound out to RUclips?
Love the pluck synth part, especially the end part on the Roland. Do you also sell this patch ? Couldn't find it in your patches
Soon available at my website! ;)
Ok for synths both are equally good, but real hero is YOU, great selection and playing, would like to watch you play for hours, great.
I go off of how good the clean piano sounds are...and Montage is clearly better... But on the other hand, the Fantom has some advanced abilities that the Montage doesn't have...and the Fantom's unique touch screen features are very desirable over the Montage... You really can't lose with either one...
I like both! They both sound great! I’m a Yamaha fan, tho. But the Roland is no joke!🤨🎶👍🏾
Is the Roland Fantom good for electronica/industrial music as well?? Can it get some real hard sounds?
Hey, I have a quick question. So I plugged M-Audio sustain pedals to the Sustain port on Montage 8. But it works in the opposite direction. I even turn the keyboard off, while holding down the pedal then turn on the Keyboard still not fixed. Please any ideas how to make this work the right way. Please help
Have you tried out to change polarity directly on pedal? If your pedal can’t do that you have to buy a sustain pedal with polarity switch or buy a Yamaha sustain pedal. You can’t change polarity into the instrument
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Thanks for your reply. So with this pedal. I can’t change polarity. It is a two in one pedal so to say. Brand M-Audio and does not have polarity button
Hello, please can you tell me what kind of device this is, so that you can control the sounds/programs/patches of both devices, at the same time?
Thank you very much :-)
I wanna know too!
@@colourof3 I find it, it's a SiparioX from Lab4music. 😀
@@andreaviesti3267 aahhh! Grazie Mille! 👌👍
What songs did you play on strings
It seems that sometimes is just a matter of EQ.
Most of the time especially with the acoustic samples (piano, strings ...)
Not only matter of EQ, but also of the reverb, and of the ADSR! And the face!!!
There wants somebody to sell a special product.
For money some individuals do EVERYTHING!!!
Absolutely! ;)
@@openclassics Totally agree, I have Korg Krome, factory sounds are terrible in the major of cases (high-end frequency notes etc that hurts your ears), you have to duplicate and create a new one adjusting the reverb, adding a couple of IFX and adjust ADSR, after that we can start talking! what I don't get is when you mention 'face', what's that?
remind me what was EQ again
Something that drove me nuts about the montage.. I like to sequence with an akai.. and some sounds would just be one sound on one channel and then you switch to a different patch and it’s four sounds across four different midi channels which would screw up my other channels and make me re-assign everything just for the given patch.. I’m curious about the Fantom, but is it the same ordeal in that sense? Some sounds are single channels and some sounds are multiple channels?
Almost wanna ditch the akai and just get a Fantom and sequence straight from that thing since it has drums and every sound I could ever need.. 16 channels is plenty.. also has a song mode which I’d prefer over the akai’s new arranger mode
The Montage only has 8 keyboard zones, whereas the Fantom has 16. With the Fantom you can download any classic Roland sound from the cloud.
Right but take into account the Montage is like 5 or more years older than the Fantom. With that being said, many Fantom sounds are thin and artificial, watching a youtube video with highlights played by a pro never helps, you must test them by yourself.
i have Roland cloud... you're not missing anything. I've already wasted $70 on retooled dated SR-JV80 expansions. ugh. My solace is that i can still double my XV5080s patches after selling my XV5050. But, the 8 vs 16 zones perked my ears up, though.
@@dare2win215 I agree with you.
Roland hardware is great but the new engine sounds thin as ice, both on the board as ITB. Juno and Jupiter are good options if you take into account the "hands on" experience, but I still think the new Roland Zenology engine is kinda thin, even a Korg Triton from 2000's has more fatness (if that's a word) to it ...
ITB the Zenology does not sound better than Korg M1 or Triton. Different ? yes, but not better.

What exactly model are those? Looking at online stores, there at least 3 versions of each (montage 6, 7 & 8, fantom 06 to 08, etc. ).
Yamaha Montage 6 and Roland Fantom 6
I bought the Fantom 6… at the beginning I thought it sounded thin, but the more I use it the more I like it. It’s has become my favorite synth. I should’ve bought the 88 version. I want that one now… it’s that good.
Ive watched some videos on the Roland Fantom in the 4x4x4 Challenge ive noticed it seems very easy to Layer Tracks is it as easy on the Yamaha Montage.
This is a very good comparison video. Thanks for posting. So the montage seems to have a fuller sound sometimes in this video. Is that what you found in real life while playing it.. What were some things you noticed? Also did you find one easier to program/navigate that the other? What were your thoughts?
Thank you! Yes obviously they are different and i really like both! I prefer some things on Montage and other on Fantom :) for example i prefer fsx action of montage and the structure of the synth. On Fantom i love all the model expansion (Jp8, jx8p etc), V piano, full sampling and so on..
they are both great on something ;) and they are both part of my personal setup

For tastes, colours. Both are useful
What is that little device that you use to change programs?
SiparioX by Lab4music
What advantage does the super knob give and does the fantom have a similar function to combat that?
Super Knob allows you to control multiple (up to 72) parameters. The Fantom has something called Matrix Control which is a bit more complicated but will give you the same results. The main thing with the Super Knob is that it's easy to setup and use.
Great sound
I'm really leaning towards getting a Fantom 7 to go with my MODX 6 then possibly upgrading to a montage as well if necessary/possible. I like both 8 versions except for their weight and size they are just so dang big.
Yes I have the modx8 and it Is big but it doesn’t weight much
I’m just the kinda guy who is obsessed with having all 88 keys.
