Full disclosure regarding Mordred - I went for it only because of the art/minis of Adrian Smith...

The big thing with chip theory to remember is there’s no urgency. You will be able to get it later for a normal price. I spent a lot on Burncycle and it’s so clunky.

Mordred was crazy expensive for what it has to offer. Inis offers a great area control game for 1/3 or 1/4 of the price

I like most Chip Theory games, but burncycle didn't seem like my jam so I passed on the first campaign. Then I got a chance to play it and it was fantastic. I got in on the 2nd campaign reprint and expansions. It is still one of my favorites. It is definitely not for everyone, and definitely not for Chris due to complexity, length, and cost.

Mordred is the thing I’ve looked forward to most from CMon in a long time. New take on that genre, the play example looked like a lot of fun and the art is objectively incredible. On the other hand, God of War looks like such a phoned in disappointment.

Encyclopedia as you said seems to be the 7.4 euro game that is good but not so good that the mass retail production copy’s could be sold (atleast in Germany) they offert the game for 15€ at the Berlin con 2 weeks ago. Sad to see a game like that be on the way out selling out.

Didn't back any board games in 22 or 23, but picked up a couple like Robot Quest Arena when they hit retail. Missed out on some exclusives, but they cost me significantly less at retail then had I backed it and I was able to see how well they were reviewed once they hit the public. No regrets at all.

Chris, CMON seems like they are coming up on on a flexion point. They made a ton of original popular games in the old days, Zombicide probably their biggest, but Marvel United is right there with it now. Cthulhu Death May Die. Massive Darkness. Blood Rage. Ankh. Rising Sun. Hate. The Others. But now... I think they are running out of steam. The two big ones, Zombicide and Marvel United fading. After DC United, what more can you do? Sure, they will squeeze another one... but it's glory days are behind it. Same with Zombicide. What now can they do? So I was calling them out on their live streams over and over, give us a NEW game. Make NEW games again. And... they did. They put out Mordred. Yes it performed poorly, but I got what I wanted, so I backed it. Since, I've backed Tactics. That looks like a good game. Gods of War, I liked it better than most so backed the base game. Skipped Clans but I'll try it when it comes out, as it looks good. Dead Keep, skipped as well, mostly just for money reasons at this point. My question for that company is "what's next?". Have they fully replaced what turns out to be a pretty damn good designer in Eric Lang? Where is the NEW FRESH talent in design space? Instead of returning over and over and over to Zombicide.... I'm sure it's not easy to run that company, where their success has now kind of trapped them. At least Awaken Realm seems to be putting out new stuff this year, a boss battler, Grimcoven, and another big adventure game, Lands of Evershade. Plus a hopefullyl cool reprint of Puerto Rico. I don't know. If I was heading CMON I think you would have to take some big risks, bring in some fresh new hot designers, and test the market with some new games. I would also work in their marketing, as they seem to have replaced who they were using with someone else, and whoever it is, isn't doing the same things that worked. Like Mordred's marketing campaign was weak. So was Gods of War and Clans. Like... that person running that side isn't doing a good job. Go back to doing the campaigns the way you did before. Look at Marvel United Multiverse, Cthulhu Death May Die, etc. Give lots of lead time. Lots of play throughs and videos. Have a really good rulebook day 1. Etc. It's rocket science, I understand, but whoever did it before did it well.

burncycle is fantastic. top 3 all time for me.
not a top earner. unlikely to get more content made for it. makes me sad. its one of the few games where i find new things, new strats, new nuances, 25+ plays in.

I Cannot WAIT for Mordred. Looks like a great take on a Area Control game with an awesome theme.
DT's playthrough that was released during the campaign lets you clearly know what type of game it is.
CMON pisses me off because they are always 6months to a year past their ETAs.

The hard thing with how many CMON is pushing out is it is hard to know which one is going to be the next big hit and which is going to be a miss. CMON has a lot of great titles but has had some misses over the years (Trudvang, Masmorra, etc) Modred looks interesting but just couldn’t pull the trigger. Dead Keep got me this year though and so did DC United

  • @diszect7134

Mordred wasn’t meant to be like war of the Rings or anything. It’s an area control game. I don’t think anyone was confused by that. And if you were, you could watch the play through and know that. I’m not sure where you get lost in this stuff. You often get games wrong. It feels like you open tabs in your browser and just start talking.

He was talking about the Dune game from CMON not Modred. Might want to be a bit more careful before you accuse someone else of “turning on a camera just start talking” cause it seems like you just opened a computer and just started typing without really listening

Personally Planet Unknown really drops a lot for me because they didn't even bother to somewhat balance the asymmetric factions and boards. Like not even a "this board goes with this faction". The game has lazy suzan but also lazy design. And don't get me started on the completely unbalanced meteorite CIV cards.. I have other tile laying/building games that do it better so I cancelled supermoon because after a couple plays of the base game I'm done with it.

Cancelled my Mordred pledge during the campaign. It was my first experience with a CMON campaign and it really turned me off them tbh. But like you, I *love* the fantasy Aurthurian setting, so I am looking forward to Avalon: The Riven Veil. 🤞🤞

I believe I saw in a king of average video that gamefound includes shipping in the total campaign funding, so the active campaign vs pledge manager comparison is not as unreliable as everyone thought to gauge the late pledges.
