  • On the 13th & 14th April 2024 the annual Hunter Valley Steamfest took place in Maitland. Now in its 36th year the event is one of the premiere heritage train events in New South Wales with multiple steam trains and diesel railcars offering rail trips to various locations around the Hunter Valley. Among the events are the ARTC Great Train Race held on Sunday 14th April which sees two steam trains race one another to Maitland.
This year the event was attended by two steam locomotives from the Transport Heritage NSW fleet; C35 3526 and AD60 6029 Beyer-Garratt; the largest operational steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere. The event was also attended by various railmotors from the Rail Motor Society.
In this video we see the festivities recorded during both days with clips of 3526 & 6029 at various locations around the Hunter Valley. Saturday was mainly spent chasing 6029 and we see it at Newcastle Interchange and entering and exiting the Port Waratah Coal Loop. On Sunday we see the Great Train Race at Metford before chasing 3526, seeing it at various locations including Lochinvar and Greta. We finish up with a couple of clips recorded at Maitland station.
