Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log Actual Play 001 - The Graveyard of Bukitsa Mu pt. 1

- In this video, I take control of Lieutenant Commander Sarah Paulsen of the U.S.S. Jemison as it investigates civil unrest on the non-Federation planet of Bukitsa Mu.
First Officer’s Log, Stardate 2173.4
I find myself on Bukitsa Mu, standing in what is locally referred to as the graveyard. What should stand as a reminder of the dangers of conflict and war feels tarnished by the conflict the U.S.S. Jemison has been called to intermediate.
On a more personal note, this is the first opportunity I’ve had since assuming command of my position to lead an away mission; Captain Malik likes to see things firsthand. Today, however, he’s been called to the capitol to speak with Queen Teato with regards to the global protests.
Captain Malik encouraged me to bring a landing party to the graveyard to get a better understanding of the situation here. I’m sure he meant the local protests, but as soon as we transported down, I found myself drawn to the site. That there are nearly half a billion buried here…

Thank you for the video. All other Solo video's I've found center on "Let's go over the book and make a character!" Thank you for some actual scene to scene examples.
To be fair, character and starship creation under the modified 2d20 system is part of the game play experience. Seeing those in action can be, and often is, very helpful, especially for newer players.
💯 too many videos don't actually USE the rules so we can see what they're like in play. Which is the most important part.
This was friggin awesome, just what I was looking for. Sub'd
Subscribed! I've been looking for something that includes actual play rather than drawing out the character creation process.
Definitely helpful to see someone do some scene play.
I'm a long-time trekkie (since the 70s). This is not so much a "game" as it is a device to enable someone to tell their own Star Trek stories. If that's your thing, great. Enjoy.
Thanks for the video, it sealed it for me, I'm definitely buying this.
The systems is incredibly dynamic. I'm glad my example was enough to put it over the edge for you.
Seeing how the scenes move so quickly helped me understand the flow of the game as a whole. I went from being stuck at the beginning of act 2 for two weeks, to rolling through to the end leisurely over the last 8 hours
I've certainly got a different style than a lot of people, but I'm glad it helped!
@@sterling_2063 It's a good style, though. It's punchy and feels like how the game was designed in the "one task per scene" sense. I was taking the word "Scene" too literally, trying to flesh out a whole sequence when really I just needed the mise-en-scene for the task. My act 3 was such a big worry for me but it went by so smoothly. I was really happy with it. Picturing the first scene of Act 1 as the stinger before the theme song also helped me get the momentum going too.
I approve of the ship's designation.😅
Maybe you get this in one of the later videos, but when the Ship rolls, you use System & Deparment instead of Attribute and Discipline. By having all the NPCs have their own stats you are are making things much easier than intended. The Shepherd Class ships have fairly weak systems and inexperienced departments but you were making rolls for Chief Engineer with target 15. Also, if your character is making a roll, you can sometimes use a Ship Talent as if it was a Focus for the character.
It took me a few missions to solidify my knowledge of Captain's Log compared to the base STA game, but I did get there eventually.
How do you display 2 pdfs borderless side by side? I'd love to know
Could you elaborate on the process you used to decide which other officers joined the away team? You talked about how many you’d created and then rolled but I don’t see that addressed in the solo book. Is that a table from the Core (non-solo) rules?
I chose the officers based on what I thought the away mission would need. As for the stats of the characters, I did a bit of a mix of the supporting character rules from the core Star Trek Adventures game, and just choosing stats as needed based on what felt good.
Is the character sheet a pdf of the book or did you get it from Modiphius?
When I ordered the hardcover book from Modiphius, I got a download link for the pdf, which came with a separate character sheet and mission log pdf. If you bought your hardcover from someone else, you can email support@modiphius.com a copy of your receipt, or other form of proof of purchase and they'll send the pdf along.
@@sterling_2063 is it already a fillable form, or did you have to add textboxes?
You referenced composure a few times. And used it when the PC climbed up on a grave a think and made an effort to calm the crowd. I didn’t see it on your sheet. Can you help a dummy understand what it does ? And where it comes from ?
Composure is one of the six focuses that I chose during character creation. You can see them listed on the right side of the character sheet. Whenever a focus comes into play during a task, if you roll at or below the value of the discipline on the task, you get an additional success on the task.
I THINK the “extra success” is from STA. In Captain’s Log, the Focus (or a Ship Talent) gets you an Advantage if you roll under the Discipline (or Department if doing a Ship Roll)
