As a kid, I'll always remember how much we enjoyed his drum sound on "Hound Dog". Sounds like he enjoyed a good life.

Very sad to hear of D.J. Fontana passing. I met D.J. during a tour he was doing with Scotty Moore and some of the Sun Recording veterans. I talked with D.J. for quite awhile. I told him I hoped I was still playing when I got to be his age--I don't remember how old he was then, I imagine in his 60s. He just looked at me, smiled a little and said, "If you want to pay the bills you will!" Loved it. And I'm still playing.

Yes, D.J. Fontana and as a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's his drumming on Hound Dog always stuck in my mind, when you come to think of it who was drumming rock and roll as hard as D.J. certainly like D.J. Johnny Cash's cross-eyed drummer W.S. Holland joined Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two later on as well to become J.C. and the Tennessee Three but W.S. had the reputation of being the fast drummer in country music for years.
GOD BLESS THEM BOTH - p.s. I've been watching a few D.J. Fontana RUclips videos over the last three months where he teached how to drum Blue suede shoes and Hound Dog and his reminiscing of playing with the Blue moon Boys, he was said to have cut about 420 tracks with Elvis, well after the other band members moved onto solo careers. He was a humble.man who didn't bag any of his former band members and remember he was drumming at the Louisiana Hayride when guys like Jim Reeves needed some uptempo beats on songs like Mexican joe

One exceptionally unique sound is in piece Too Much, as Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana jived in instrumentation , seemingly ad hoc style. RIP .
