The fact is simple. NY DJs failed NY hip-hop (when I say NY I mean the entire east coast). I keep hearing the excuse that artists aren't being played/supported because they haven't "built a relationship", but how do you build relationships with DJs who don't respond to your emails, don't follow you back on socials, and then give you the run-around in person? It's deeper than radio. Everyone and everything ain't for the radio. We all understand that. The knock is that they flat-out look down upon local artists on the east coast. They only respect your "success" whereas other places respect your "grind". There's a difference!
Self fronting talking about they don't tell him what to play..all the prime hour DJs have a set playlist..it's a business and these labels are paying for spins. Kay Slay played what he wanted cus he came on at midnight
What I learned from this conversation about the whole DJ vs Rapper thing to get music heard is we must do better. The relationships between DJ & Rapper should not be this difficult.
That relationship part is KEY and can't be told enough. I use it in corporate America, get cool with HR, ask them about a position you're interested in like who it reports to....ask someone in that department how the mgr is... have a pre meeting with the mgr to see if ur a good fit....I've done it multiple times. It's not what you know, but who you know.

as an outsider looking in i think labels have a huge role in the radio game whatever they invest in will dominate radio when that happens local artists end up trying to compete with what they hear, that's why some of the south og's are lyrical because they were competing with what they heard when new york was the biggest investment for labels

Dave one of my favorite artist out the city but his voice is different now he sound gritty and drill vs the polished New York flow he had on Kiara Channel and previous mixtapes or his Eastmix
