Break Up Your Video Project into Parts in Shotcut to Streamline Your Editing and Avoid Losing Work

- The main idea of chaptering is to break up your one project into "chapters" as separate MLT files. You can then tackle your video edits in parts, then combine it together later. This falls under the more advanced tips, so it works for both beginner and advanced Shotcut users.
As part of my productivity series, one thing I love about chaptering is it helps me be more productive when I'm not in the mood to be productive. If you have a timeline that's 2 hours long and you have those 2 hours all in one file. Sometimes it's too daunting to look at and I wouldn't even know where to start that day. But, If I had broken down my work into chapters of say 15 minutes a piece,
I can just tell myself, just get this 15 minute piece done.
Let me know if there's something specific you want to learn about Shotcut in the comments and I'll make a tutorial video. Hopefully, I can help you learn Shotcut.
I hope this tip video inspires you to go play around on Shotcut and make awesome videos!

A pity we cannot give more than one thumb up...
I used shotcut for few months and I discover many great features via your videos. I even didn't know you can apply filter on the track or use mlt file as video or how to export/import frames.
Many thanks for all the tips, you got an additional subscriber ;)

Excellent trick/tip be.
Thank you
Still very useful - I wish I’d come across this when it was first posted! Just wanted to say that I mirror this approach when I’m working with a voiceover file in Audacity, using markers to create sections that I can export that match the chapter videos I’m working on. That way I can treat the whole voiceover track with an effect in a single pass, for consistency, but I can still save individual .flac files for each chapter video, for ease of editing.
Thank you for your support

Happy to help!
Me too! Imagine the pain i went through in making a 6-hour long video!
Thanks a ton, Ben!
This is smart. The other day I was working on a project & I didn't know what I was doing. It somehow got all messed up & I had to start over. You're videos are so helpful especially for newbies.

Question: So I started with one video source that is 15 mins & split it into 3 tracks. From there I edited each track with transitions, cuts etc. After I finished them is like is there way to save each track separately? I want to end up with 3 final videos to export. Hope that makes sense.
Great tutorial which is clearly explained, thanks very much.

Thanks very useful, and it should be one of the tools that should be created as a priority. Creating chapters not only makes editing very easy, but also greatly lightens the use of machine resources. This detail that I did not know makes me excited, and I try to increase my audiovisual production.
Absolutely! Glad to have helped
Excellent ! I've started to divise my projects into chapters a while ago, but I didn't think of using the MLT files in the final edit. I'll start doing that from now on. Thanks !
Thanks! I'm surprised it was never mentioned on the forum or other tutorials
@@BenEspanto Well, thanks to you, now someone does mention it :D
@@musicalboxbitspieces well, you somewhat mentioned something similar before in the forum when you talked about saving Lower Thirds as MLT files
@@BenEspanto hmm yes, I think at one or two occasions I suggested using MLTs as templates for lower thirds or animated titles. But using them as chapters in a master project is a new concept to me. Pretty exciting.
Glad to be of service! I definite use them for my intros and outros. Saves a ton of time

A powerful attribute for Shotcut. This "trick" just knocked me off Davinci Resolve but, I didn't know about using MLT files until you showed me. Does Resolve have a similar ability? New subscriber now for sure!
Glad it helped! I don't know if Resolve can do it. Luckily, the MLT filetype can
Great!!! Very useful.

not missing a single episode keep it up, if you know any special effects please do a video since I do youtube as well and need those special effects like masking (if any), I like the shotcut icon effect at the beginning of your video how it dropped to the timeline pretty cool "is the small things that matter.
Thanks for the love!
This is so useful. I am going to try this by saving sections on track one, re-importing and then adding other tracks. On my new video, I added some picture-in-picture, added a white rectangle on another track to act as a border and later when made later amendments to track 2, it threw all of my p-in-p askew. Hope this works.
I'd love to see it when you're done!
@@BenEspanto I would appreciate any comments you have. It is only 5 - 6 minutes long but has taken me ages to do. I have used iMovie and tried to use DaVinci Resolve so I am new to Shotcut. I will upload it to RUclips when it is finished and will send you a link. Unless you have a better suggestion. Take care and be safe. Mike
Great!
@@BenEspanto Ben, I said I would send a link to my completed project. Unfortunately when I viewed it I realised that a couple of glitches I thought were playback issues appeared on the final export. I went back to try to re-edit and the program crashed 5 times in succession. Reloading didn't help and when I tried to start a new project the same thing happened. I have no issues with other apps, so I have decided to go back to DaVinci resolve. It's a pity but thanks for all the videos you uploaded and I wish you every success in the future.Best wishes and keep safe.
Great idea, I assume you create the chapter AFTER you are satisfied with edits and soundtrack since it is not possible to make additional edits to the "chapter video." This tip is for working on the individual sections separately, saving as a chapter when that section is finished then editing or combining the finished chapters on one timeline. Is this correct? Which is great and very helpful. I suppose one could save a chapter without soundtrack and add it in to the final edit when all chapters are done. Your tutorials are very helpful. Thank you.
Yes. You are correct
Thanks! I love your channel as i also edit my YT videos in shotcut. My videos look boring but i will try to implement some of your tricks to make it better. Will this chapters be taken up in YT as chapters ? Thanks once again

Freakin' awesum! I use lots of green screen and multiple shared screens and FX when doing my quartet vids. After 3-4 mins it's almost down to 1 frame a second. Should be able to do something with this. Thanks.
Glad it helped! I'd love to see what you come up with
@@BenEspanto Already done a good test humorous/music video which friends and colleagues seem to like.
Will eventually learn how to create and upload a RUclips channel dedicated to that. Still learning lots of new things, quite a few from you, thanks, Ben.
@@phila2361 Great!
@@BenEspanto You asked for it! Finally set up separate RUclips channel and uploaded my 2nd attempt. Could not use chaptering as much as I thought as it doesn't show audio waveform, but managed to use it to join "comedy" intro with the musical performance. Managed to cut out the computer lag by using proxy files as shown in 1 of your other superb videos. If you fancy a look I'm on: 4PhilFilms.
Cheers!
Yes, you can drag an .mlt file to the timeline but the filters within it aren't accessible !
The MLT files is not for re-using filters. It's for re-using the videos itself. If you want filters, use the presets
@@BenEspanto I've done that and got some really strange results !
It turns out Shotcut had reformatted my 720x576 video as 1920x1080 - so the whole screen text in the filter was appearing in the top left corner!
It's done this on 3 videos - so I've had to force it back down to the small size resolution !
Thank you very much Ben. You are doing awesome job indeed. What will happen to saved mlt files if in the meantime you change the location of the files used to create said mlts? I think that you can't remove the source folders without affect saved mlt files. What do you think?
I see that you already mentioned this later on your tutorial. It is something that happened to me so I got a bad experience. Keep going.
Correct
Isn't it better to do this with MLT files instead of MP4 (when possible?) Especially for larger projects?
I would save the originals in both MLT and MP4 to be safe, but for larger projects, chaptering is just more convenient
Nice tips... but how exactly do you split say... a very long single video file (half an hour or something) into chapters and different MLTs precisely (in terms of timecode). Tried splitting the track in multiple parts first in one project and extract sub-clip. But each extraction takes way too long. So I'm wondering if you have other way of achieving this or you just do this chaptering with just a stack of original small clips. Thanks!
It would need to be manual, if you want to split a video in equal pieces, there is way to do it using time markers. Add markers to your timeline, then export only specific markers
Esto me voló la cabeza literalmente :D
Gracias!

Hey dim-bulb when are you gonna make an EXCELLENT tutorial?
ruclips.net/video/IDqv2ViF7_M/видео.html
My laptop almost always shut down whenever I'm exporting videos using shotcut... I just try it again and again, brute forcing a 5 minute video to export... However, I want a more reliable solution... Is there anything I can do about that or my laptop isn't just powerful enough to handle the program?
It sucks but I really like shotcut and I don't want to give up with the software if possible...
Maybe your computer isn't fast enough. Use these settings and see if it gets better: ruclips.net/video/PzHutxve2T0/видео.html
@@BenEspanto thank you for replying... Although your settings didn't really fixed my exporting issue, it definitely makes the editing process smoother... I have a question though, say I completely edited a video and since my laptop can't really handle the exporting process, can I copy the .mlt file to a flash drive, transfer it to a more powerful pc, and export it there?
Does the mlt file contains the proxy and the original videos? Would I be able to export the project from another computer even if the clips I used were not there?
I was thinking of maybe using a friend's pc just to export the videos... I hope it is possible....
Yes you can but you need to make sure that all the files are included in the flash drive. When you created the proxy, you can also assign a folder to where the proxy files are saved. I usually save the proxies in a folder on my desktop so it's easier to find later
@@BenEspanto would it automaticallg find the files just by having it there? File location matters right?
If you first set it on the desktop, it will automatically find it
I got a question when I open mlt file as clip it freezes and takes forever for it to load up. Why is that?
How large is the MLT file?
@Ben Espanto it's about 15 min. But I found out something weird. When I turn off proxy it loads fast but when I have it on it takes forever idk why
Proxy doesn't work on MLTs
@@BenEspanto ahhh that was the conclusion I was coming to. Thank you my friend!
No worries!
This is brilliant!
I'm half way through the editing of a green screen video and I've already placed all the rest of the clips onto the tracks (synchronised to the music track). Can I just save as an MLT file up to the halfway point? If so, how would I select just the beginning half to save?
Likewise, the bottom track is the background wallpaper video, can I just select just the bottom track to save so that I can use it separately in another video?
Imagine a chapter as a full video. So wherever you need to cut in order to have one complete video, that's where you cut. Then the next chapter is the next full video. So if you cut a looping background in the first chapter, start the next chapter on where the last one left off.
I would start with a master MLT, then save as twice (MLT1 & MLT 2). Go to the first one and cut and delete up to a certain point. Then go to MLT 2 and cut the opposite. Does that make sense?
What is your preferred method to keep track of changes in the chapters.
Afaik there is no reference to the chapter-mtl files as soon as you have imported them to the main timeline.
The only method I found so far is to delete the mtl from the timeline and re-import it. But this is really cumbersome. Are you aware of a better method that automatically keeps track of changes in in the chapter-files.
Not that I'm aware of, that's why I wait until the final export before I lay out the MLTs
A short update. This topic gets really hot with larger projects and in my opinion it really doesn't make much sense if Shotcut provides the possibility of a master-chapter approach to include mtl-files but doesn't keep a reference to the chapter-mtl.
I couldn't believe that this is really handled that dumb by a development team that designed a tool that is well thought through most of the time.
That's why I got in contact with the shotcut team.
I received the following info:
The imported Chapter-mtl do keep a reference to their original file.
But changes in the Chapter-mtl will only get visible in the master-mtl after a restart.
I tested this and it works fine if the length of the chapter-mtl doesn't change, because the chapter-mtl will always occupy the time-span in the time-line of the master-mtl from the initial import or the last edit of it's extension.🤨
If the chapter gets shorter the remaining time is filled with a still-picture of the chapter's last frame. You will need to manually cut it.
If the chapter gets longer, you need to left-mouse-button drag the clip to make the extended portion visible again.
Next video: Normalizing audio across chapters. I noticed your volume changed a fair bit between the main video and the channel description at the end.
Yeah, been watching Audacity videos. Audio is not my strong suit
@@BenEspanto In ShotCut you can also edit the sound quite well - using filters.
You can in a minimal way, but Audacity has much better tools like removing background hum of normalizing peaks
Why is it showing captions on my screen in an oriental type of font?
Change your settings in the CC to show the right captions
Friend I followed what was in this video and it didn't work, two things happen to me. 1. When I try to use the file saved in another video it gives a bug and the program closes. 2. The screen behind the animation is black, I would like it to be transparent. It is possible, help me!
Create a project with GREEN color clip on V1.
Save project.
Go to Timeline Menu > Other and choose Copy Timeline to Source
Apply Chroma Key: Simple filter on the Source video, with color set to the same green as in V1
Go to Export
Make sure Source is selected in the From dropdown menu
Choose alpha > Quicktime Animation in the Export Presets
Activate Advance mode.
The Format dropdown menu should be set to mov
In the Codec tab, the Codec dropdown should be set to qtrle
In the Audio tab, check Disable audio
In the Other tab, pix_fmt=argb should be present in the Other text box.
Click Export File.
@@BenEspanto One question ... as I create a green project in v1, would it be going in the menu to open another one and adjust the green color? Else I apply the simple chroma key before exporting, or do I apply it to my new project?
Before the export
@@BenEspanto I followed the steps you indicated, I inserted my files to animate the logo and when I exported the image it appeared invalid
Do you have the latest version of Shotcut?
Hi Ben, Thanks for this video! I am a beginning RUclipsr using Shotcut as my main video editing tool. I have tried saving MLT's as chapters to combine them later on, but I found one caveat that seems to be something to consider when using this method.
I found that when using slowed down video (or sped up), using it as an MLT chapter can lead to unsynchronized audio. I have had a few occasions where my carefully orchestrated transitions based upon the underlying music got messed up after using it as an MLT in a new shotcut file.
Am I doing sth wrong here or is this indeed a shortcoming of this method?
I have never experienced that, but I will let you know if I can replicate the issue
I got another stupid question lmao say I'm editing a video about 1 hour long and I want to edit in 15 min. Increments, should I cut the video into 15 min. Edit than save and than delete the Track and go to the next part I want to edit? I can't figure out the best way to organize it
You can do it that way
@Ben Espanto awesome you are amazing man. Sorry to bother! I really appreciate your help and response man that means alot to me. Thanks again
No worries!
¿Cómo descubriste esto? How did you find out this?? :)

Thanks! Efficiency at it's best! What I did one time to avoid lagging, I had to render a group of clips from several videos, then adding it to main video. We all know how long rendering is.
