BRAW UPDATE : The Blackmagic Video Assist 3.1 update is now available, this unlocks BRAW recording with Canon C300 MKII and Panasonic EVA-1 cameras. Download the firmware here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/
Super excited just ordered mine today to use with the Lumix S5 once the firmware update is released 13 July. How does the monitor effect the battery usage of the camera?
Excellent overview, thanks for that. I'm curious about the fan in the device. What is your subjective opinion on how loud it runs and is it constant or does is change rpm based on the heat generated by the monitor/recorder?
Hey Curtis - Thanks for the positive comment, glad you found it useful. My personal opinion is that although it can change rpm based on heat and how hard it's working it is still a quiet device - i'd see absolutely no issues using it whilst recording an interview in a small room with a good microphone. Cheers for watching - KH
great run through. Finally found someone who took the time to actually give a run down on operating it. How are you finding it with your EVA? I'm running a shogun inferno and a ninja v - but keen on BRAW as I edit/grade in resolve so ProResRAW is a little useless for me. cheers
At 8:46 when you record and then you stop and playback the colors are more vibrant.... why? The reason im asking that is because i have the blackmagic pocket 6k connected to the atem Constellation 8K and the return of the signal that i take its extremely vibrant and i cant understand why.
You're very welcome Ian. The Nitrotech heads? Personally, I wasn't sold on the very first models to come off the line (I had one to try out), but now I actually think pretty reliable and rather good value for the payload they can take and counterbalance. I think for mid-range 'cine' style cameras (such as the EVA, C200, URSA Mini Pro etc) and below, they're really a decent solution. What are you looking to put onto it? KH
Thanks for the positive comment Tim. I think the pre-amps perform well and haven't had any noticeable issues in my time using them. One thing I would say however is that in comparison to dedicated external audio recorders I do have to bump up the gain a little more on the Video Assist to get matching levels, having said that, it does still sound very clean. Thanks for watching! Kriss
I would like to connect an external battery with a higher capacity to the 12V socket of the monitor (thus 12V/3A like the power pack). At least 20-30 Ah would be desirable for the use of a 3-hour non-stop video recording. Changing the rear 2 FP batteries while recording is out of the question.
Can you have the waveform appears in a small window while monitoring? Is there any timecode input option besides the embedded timecode in the video signal? Thanks
Thanks for the great video... I was wondering if this Assist Monitor can be used as Media Player via HDMI while the mini XLR input have external audio... on an ATEM for example, I want the audio feed from the monitor to be constantly available even when the media isn't in play (eg, move to a different cam)
So you can use them as a media player playing content from the inserted SD card out via the HDMI - however the audio is attached to what is embedded/encoded on the SD card media i.e you can't use live XLR mic inputs instead.
@@Holdannews That's weird... if I use it as a media player via HDMI... Atem Pro will allow me to mute it's audio (from video playback) have they really haven't thought about giving the XLR a separate channel? wow that's a massive flow...
Thank you for the informative video. I’ve just received mine via yourselves. It’s very laggy on a Canon C100 Mk2 & Canon 6D. I’d love some advice on how to tackle it. Ben
Hey Wolff Workshop - have you tried testing the lag with another monitor or screen? Even connecting the camera to a HD TV would do for the test, and see if the lag is still there? If it is, then it is happening camera side, if it isn't then its the recorder side. Let me know how you get on. Cheers - KH
Holdan Limited Hi, it’s definitely the video assist. I’ve connected the camera to a tv and another monitor with no lag. I’m in the latest firmware 3.0.3. There’s also an occasional rolling shutter look to the screen. It’s not visible on the cameras lcd and not on the recording, just the display of the video assist. I’m not sure if I have a dud. Ben
@@SCULPTURAMAplus hmmm that doesn't sound right. I'd recommend getting in touch with the reseller you bought it from to inspect and either repair or send out a new unit. KH
Hey Wolff Workshop - there's new firmware available that is said to improve HDMI connectivity with certain cameras. It may fix your lag issue. Let me know how you get on! KH
None of the reviews of this monitor seems to care about accuracy ;) how accurate is this monitor for HDR10? does it follow PQ exact and are there any calibration controls for whitebalance and colors? what i wonder if you can use this monitor as an reference monitor.
Hello, my name is Urias from Brazil... I have the nex fs700r camera and I have been trying to record in 4k on video assist blackmagic 5 ", and do not give me the option to record in 4k, that is, the video output does not show the option of 4k. You can help me
Thanks for the video! Do you know if the Ursa mini pro 4.6k g2 can dual write to the CFAST card as well as to the ssd on this monitor in BRAW? I’ve been searching everywhere for an external monitor that can do this so I can have a backup in case something happened to the CFAST card. If this is possible does pushing record on the ursa also trigger the monitor to record? I’ve been looking all over for this answer, thanks!!
Looking at purchasing this monitor. I just want to make sure you can load video content and test patterns on to the SD card and output via the HDMI and SDI? So you can generate a signal for testing purposes. If there any restrictions on resolutions and frame rates?
Thanks for this review. I know the current firmware allows recording from the EVA1 to BRAW, but can I record 5.7K to ProRes on the BM Video Assist? I have clients who may want 5.7K footage but do not want to work with BRAW Files.
Hi, thank you for the great video! Do you know by any chance, if the video output can be downscaled in the device? The Ninja can do it, but this is way better.I would like to record 4k and have a wireless transmitter connect to the output for client monitor. The affordable transmitters are taking only 1080 signal.
So do you think this monitor is really good ? I have the blackmagic pocket 6K. and i mean its made by the same manufacturer but is it really the best for it ?
Yes it's still very much valid to be using it with a Pocket 6K due to its very bright HDR screen. I'd pair the 5-inch model if using it with that camera so that its size and weight doesn't upset the handling of the camera. Kriss
Does someone know if this monitor can be used also to take photos? I’m looking for a monitor that I can use to control how I take videos but also how I take photos. Would it be possible with this monitor?
Hey, yes you can have a histogram displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (it would be next to the record button) - but this can't be changed to another scope or waveform. Thanks for watching! KH
Hey man, thank you for that video ! I'm experiencing an issue with the sound. I did some test (usually never doing that) But I scream in my shotgun mic (phantom on), and in my handmic... I can't go over -20dB. Quite annoying, because it's low noise and I have to increase that much in post, that make me find some noise back. Do you think my new product have a manufacture problem ? Best regards,
@@mannbhatti3640 It was two years ago. It wasn't a manufacture problem, but an issue about the firmware. Even in mic output, it was a line out power, so about -25dB less than it should be.

Great video man! I’m wondering how the frame rate is controlled? Is that set on the camera or on the BMD Video Assist?
Hey, that's set from the camera end :)
What is the best setting for the “default format” under the setup menu?

Hi!
What's happen with de SDI Output when you turn on the Display 3D Lut? Do you see the lut in the other monitor?
The original Video Assist had Zoom functionality on right top corner, do these have that?
If Videotimecode is coming in , will the sdi-out port pass that timecode on? thanks.
I just thought about this, but why don’t recorders have tally lights?
Hi. Great video! Does the HDMI and SDI OUT work as a loop out during recording and if so does it cross convert between HDMI and SDI?
Can I use canon batteries on this video assist? or it only takes sent batteries?
Thanks!
thank you for your tutorial. I just bought the 5 inch but I find it amazing this pettit hissing noise as soon as you turn it on is it normal?
Sir, Is it possible to record the menu from the LCD screen of the camera with Black Magic Focus Assist 12G ?. Awesome video & Thanks :)
How are the file sizes?
Thx for the video. Was wondering if the video assist can control the settings in the BMPCC 6K as it does on your camera. Can you tell ?
