Canggu isn't a sleepy surfer vibe,it's an overcrowded, traffic ridden noisy dump with night clubs blarring music till 3am and dog poo everywhere

If you dont like crowded area, then try lombok, its near bali.
Have same scenery, not many tourists know that place, still in early development of tourist destination, so the road is great, the greenery is great and the beach also great.
The downside is maybe tourist will not find the exotic atmosphere like you can find in bali (you know the temple and with all of that bali's religious ceremony).
Edit : ah and this place is the center of indonesian pearl industry. So you can find easily pearl store with cheap price but good quality, even for local eyes its still cheap.

Actually, I feel a lil bit of malicious glee to see all the "new" Bali influencers - who only know the "empty CoVi-Bali" - being kinda shocked with the REAL Bali, the crowded Bali, the noisy Bali, the crazy traffic Bali :D
    Enjoy!

Lombok has no culture and no historic towns that's why the streets can be widened easily. I have been there once in sengigit and Kuta. horrible beaches and very few nice warungs to hang out. The 3 gili islands are just OK for short stay as accommodation was poor and expensive.
Why do you think not even many Indonesians want to go there until the government had to build a motogp?

Cheers for the video mate, appreciated.
I got a question: I spent some good time in Canggu about 5 years ago, bit more quiet then I can imagine. I'm looking to head over to Bali for the UK winter on a 6 month trip. Looking to avoid areas filled with drunk tourists partying and find a more laidback but still able to make some friends both foreigners and locals as I'll be heading over by myself.
Be up for doing some activities, learning surfing/boxing for example and some live music with a Guinness (drink might not be possible lol) is my cup of tea.
    Any recommendations?

Matt, I gather from your accent you are British? Over tourism was happening all over the world even in Europe where air fares were dirt cheap and people had more disposal income to visit popular destinations like Paris, Rome, Amsterdam and so on. There were even calls to limit tourist numbers entering Amsterdam, cinque terres and Venice before the pandemic. Miles and miles of heavy traffic (even Brighton and Bournemouth) are commonplace during the summer or long weekends.
Many European roads are just as small as Bali's as I experienced in Greek Islands, Sorrento Peninsula and Provence but luckily the cars there are smaller in size and people can choose public buses or local trains if they have no bug family to tag along.
The same is with Indonesia which has experienced explosive growth within the country so domestic tourists also make up a big portion of arrivals. What's more Indonesians are the biggest Instagram users in the world, they love new insta spots and beach clubs. I do believe the government will improve infrastructure when they can afford it, just like what they did with airport roads over the years. It used to take 1 to 2 hours from Seminyak and Nusa Dua to airport just 4-5 years ago if I remember correctly.

I dont know should I be happy or otherwise to see these all.
I will never see the serenity n beautiful rice fields in Canggu area n its surroundings anymore.
I heard from my Balinese family n friends, in North Bali now they are facing lack water for their rice fields, as a result of too many villas n hotels being built.
Too many foreigners who are disrespectful to Indonesian culture (eat in a restaurant in shirtless, made a nude photo in a big tree which is its a sacred spot for Indonesian especially Balinese, pose in bikini n made a Hindu Pura as background, etc) yelling at night, they did all things that they can't do in their hometown country.
I find it its kinda tacky n no manner at all.
But yeah back again.. for economy reason, I can't say much.
Bali is not like Java which has many factors for economy sources.
Bali since years ago has always relied on tourism for its economy.
