The sound of rubbing the sumi ink stick on the inkstone sounds like the singing of insects on a summer’s night. It’s so beautiful!
What a poetic way to hear the sound of grinding the ink stick 😍 thank you for sharing!
I hear them as well. The words of your comment will forever bring happiness to me as I grind. It may not bring as much happiness to my wife, she does not like bugs.
Omg such a beautiful statement and it really does 😍 now when I hear it I think of country nights in the summer looking up at the moon and stars and hearing my beautiful surroundings
If the inkstone becomes visible behind the ink stick then the ink is nearly ready. This was the most useful piece of advice for me as a beginner. You showing on rice paper how the ink was when ready, also helped a lot. I appreciate your words, as they have helped me to relax before I paint.
So nice to hear this video was useful for you. Happy painting 😄
I would just buy this not to make caligraphy but just to experience how calm and satisfying doing this is. It's like a more elegant version of satisfying and relaxing oneself using a fidget toy.
Thank you for leaving nice comment ☺️🙏 This ancient art form is so beautiful to experience and to share with others.
Thank you very, very much for your instruction. My first experience was frustrating. Now that I know it can take ten minutes, I will have a more peaceful, satisfying experience.
You are most welcome 😊 glad to know that this video was useful!
Thank you very much, miss. Very happy to now know how to properly use the tools.🙏
I'm so happy to hear that! Happy painting 😆
Wonderfully made. Brought me to tears and I don't even know why.
So lovely to hear that - thank you ☺️🙏The experience through this art form is always mysterious and beautiful.
Mesmerizing AF!
Special moment 😊

Lovely video. I can’t wait to try it! ❤
@@Cara-Art.Shark-Skinner Happy painting 😊!!
This helped a lot! I read a book about the basics of Chinese art but seeing how to prepare ink in a video is super helpful!
So nice to hear that this video was helpful☺️ happy painting!
I've read about grinding ink quite few times. Now I know how it's done. Thank you.
I’m glad this video helped you. Thank you for watching 😊🙏🏻
Best video on how to grind ink. Arrigato!
Best to hear 😁 so glad to know that the video is useful for you. Happy painting!
Very relaxing and informative.
Thank you.
You are most welcome and happy painting 😊
Thank you for demonstrating how to make ink! I've been looking, and yours was the first video I found that did a proper demonstration.
Best thing to hear that this video was useful 😊🙏🏻 Happy painting!
This is just what I was looking for. Perfect !! and I love the mental aspect which is why I’m taking the whole process real slow - getting a feel for the tools and learning a little about the thinking behind the painting or writing philosophy as I go. Today I unboxed my tools and photographed everything as it was an unused beautiful set. Started with discovering a little about the brush types I have - then got stuck with how to grind the ink. From not having a clue to knowing exactly what do do in one simple and beautiful video . I can’t thank you enough. Found this video at midnight U.K. Tomorrow I’m going to grind ink with much appreciation 😊
@@louiseann_venusandneptune so nice to hear 😊 Enjoy this beautiful art form and thank you so much for sharing your story. Happy painting!! ☺️🙏
@@JunkoAzukawa you must have felt the vibe yesterday💜💛 I completed my first little painting - a mostly, text painted, birthday card for my son. Black inked words and a water colour flower. I haven’t painted since I was a teen after leaving college.(now 56) I am very critical of what might not come through my hands onto paper, but every time I held the brush (as you taught and knew why it was better that way) and listened in to the music that I chose for the project that calmed me, I was able to focus on the in moment doing, not what it might become. End result I had a good enough for me 💕 Token for my son, which went into a glassed frame and was wrapped safely - I was panicking all week that I wasn’t going to have the courage to do it. But the mindfulness & feels of dropping the water on the ink stone, and the process of grinding the ink to the right, for me, consistency and the practice of the types of brush strokes that I have learnt from your video kept me entrained to my divine skill. 🙌🏼😇
You explain very well and you are very sweet and tender, thanks 🙂.
Thank you so much ☺️🙏
Thanks for this video. Amazon suggested a product I'd never known existed (a beginner kit with an ink stone and ink stick), and your video was helpful in explaining what it is and how it is used.
All my pleasure. Hope you will enjoy this beautiful art form ☺️ and thank you for watching!

Barakamon Anime bring me here, and i am so anthusiast to learning calligraphy
@@Musikataid That’s a great anime. Happy calligraphy 😊!
thank you for your video and sharing a bit of your philosophy on painting. Have a peaceful day.
Wonderful to hear. Thank you for your warm comment too ☺️🙏🏻
That was crazy
Kirei!
I prefer to buy ink sticks than liquid ones.
I have found that a small, cheap ink stick of 30g is more ink than a bottle of 150-180ml cheap ink and the ink stick is a bit cheaper than the bottle.
Exactly. Using a bottled ink saves your time but the time you grind ink is so precious 😊
Thank you so much for this. I have always wanted to try and now I can 😊
My pleasure! Happy painting 😊
Lovely video and very helpful. Thank you.
My pleasure 😊 happy painting!
I’m new here and want to learn more ❤ thank you
My pleasure. Thank you for watching ☺️
I need to get a bigger ink stone. Thank you.
You can make ink much quicker with using a bigger ink stone!
Does the ink from the ink-stick washable if it gets on you hands and fingers?
Yes it’s washable. I get ink on my fingers all the time! but it stains on fabric and paper.
If a 50-gram ink stick is used once or twice every day, how long will it take to grind the ink stick down to the end? Will it take years or months?
I would say it takes a half year to finish a 50 gram ink stick 👍🏻 happy painting!
Thank you . Lovely video. I'm so glad you mentioned the sound. It is a lovely sound and there is usually a lovely smell. I have been trying to find a black (or close) water dropper for a few years and have never managed to find one. I've never even seen any in pictures. May I ask where you bought yours from? please?
Thanks again for the lovely video 🙂
Thank you so much for watching. This lovely water dropper was made in my home town, Toyama prefecture in Japan. My home town is famous for copper products and it’s made of copper called 高岡銅器 (Takaoka Dōki) ☺️🙏🏻
@@JunkoAzukawa oh wow, thank you. Now I know what to keep an eye out for.
Please feel free to do more visually beautiful videos. There's something so wonderfully calming about the practise of Shodo and I never tire seeing the practice, but I must admit, that the attention to detail and addressing + intnetionally setting the vibe really does make a difference.
Thank you
What can i replace the ink stone if i dont have one? 😢
@@perraperdida2129 hmmm, you can buy primade ink bottles from most of art suppliers and they are ok 😊👌
What can I use instead of inkstone? I have an ink stick, but no stone. I am very upset.
Slate also works with ink sticks from my experience. It's a type of rock. Thank you for watching ☺️🙏
Is it safe for tattoo ink
Apparently tatoo artists used to use this ink traditionally (it becomes blueish black on skin) but today they use special ink for tattoos. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
Is this ink waterproof after drying? or will my scroll get messed up if it ever gets wet?
Great question - it is waterproof after drying so it’ll stay as it is even if you spray some water once it’s dry!
Can it be put in a fountain pen?
I’m sure you can. I would make the ink thick enough 😊
Is it the same as ones they put in kakesuzuri?
Yes it’s the same but all the materials they put in Kalesuzuri are usually smaller in size!
😃
😊🙏
Can people tell the difference between a high quality ink and just any other blank ink
@@SK-S2N High quality ink travels(bleeds) on the paper finely but the quality of the ink is not that important. Having a beautiful mind is the most important element when you paint 😊!
quite a personal question,isnt it?
Hi Junko,
I wanted to ask the difference that the actual inkstone has on the ink. I really love the look of duang inkstones but I dont want to purchase one if its not necessary.
🙏 thank you!!!
Thank you for watching the video 😊 Usually ink stone craftsmen choose quality stones (fine and smooth) to carve the decorations around the stone so beautifully decorated ink stones would likely make finer ink but general ink stones are absolutely fine too and I use them all the time.
This may seem unusual, but I like to write out letters and words in the grinding process almost as a way to pray to whatever higher power could grant me what I need to accomplish my creative goals. It is probably unnecessary and just a superstitious ritual, but I do think it at least helps me with getting focused on my goals and start relaxing properly.
Thank you for watching and for your comment. I have been learning Japanese calligraphy and believe in the power of writing and words. I found it is a great idea to write some words when grinding an ink stick ☺️
