This was extremely helpful! My friend got me a very similar set as a gift and I had no idea how to use it. This is the first video I have seen that is actually educational and not ASMR! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video! I received a kit just like this one in 1970 from a nurse who just moved to the U.S. from Korea. I had no idea how to use it. I saved it and now my grand daughter is interested in calligraphy, so I gave it to her. This will help us a lot! What a special treat! Thank you, again!
I work at a Goodwill and say a kit like this but it was with a paper book, two brushes, a stone for ink, the dry ink, and the little water well and brush rest, and this was very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you very much! The description is perfect. I just bought a beautiful set, very similar to this, at a Charity shop, and wasn’t sure what a couple of items were.
I got a kit like this but with more brushes from an antique store a few months ago and I’ve been looking for how to use it. Thank you so much for this video!!!!!
I bought a Box like this on a private market but had absolutely no clue what it was but it looked so aesthetic so i gave it a try. Now i understand. This Video has a very good explanation.
I have all sorts of art supplies that get tucked away on a shelf. It's a lot of fun to rediscover them and see what they can do. Have fun! Calligraphy can be an incredibly soothing form of art.
Yes, and I love those brushes. I started out with watercolor classes in college. Still love the calligraphy, drawing with ink, etc. My set cleaned up nicely. Not like me to leave things in storage without a thorough cleaning, unless something drastic happened. Maybe we moved or something, it got stored and a little forgotten. Best wishes for your work.
@@sparklekitties I love love love watercolors. I have a separate channel at Lisa Shea Artist ruclips.net/channel/UCn46fz0fMUHXhgQ9C4gQ7VA where I'm practicing with those. I'm still a beginner but I love it!
My nana got me one of these from Singapore (early internet days) and I hadn’t even realised there was a bottom layer! I guessed what some of it was and how to use it. Now I’m not sure I could find my kit and my nana has passed :(
I'm sorry to hear your nana has passed away. Maybe now is the time to do an organization project and track it down! Or you can get a new one in honor of her.
That is sort of like asking a watercolor painter what paints are the best. It is all about what you, the artist, enjoy. Maybe you like giant brushes for making big, swoopy shapes. Maybe you prefer delicate little brushes for making small works of art. It's up to your style!
@@lisasheaorigami yeah I noticed that too....Japanese sets can be really basic and minimal and can also be complete...In my case, it is only luck I found a paper weight and a complete set here in my country from a Japan surplus store..... It's a rare find and complete ones can be really expensive as $20 from surplus stores
@@lisasheaorigami yeah. thank you. although the inkstone I have is as small as my palm, and another smaller and the ink paste container is smaller than my 2.5cm seal but yeah I'm having much fun
I bought my particular kit in a Japanese-owned store in Boston. There are all sorts of art stores and Japanese / Chinese stores which stock them. There are also plenty of online sources.
Do you mean that the voice is hard to hear against the background music for you? Or that you think the voice recording itself has issues? It would be really odd if you felt the voice recording itself was poor - I'm using a fairly solid camera recording system. Still, I can look into it ...
There are countless types of brushes out there - it all depends on which particular kit you get. They can be horse hair, goat hair, weasel hair, a mix of hairs, etc. etc.
Nice but I can barely hear your voice over the very intrusive music!!! I just want to hear *you*- the vid is interesting enough that we don't need to be entertained too...
@@snackpack210 It's not that the music is bad, I just can barely hear her voice over it! Folks don't really know how to add *background*, not *drown out*, music...!
I apologize that you found the music a problem for hearing my voice. Each person's hearing can vary from others quite a lot - some easily distinguish voices while others have immense challenges with a voice against a background. I can soften the music in subsequent videos if even at this level some people are having trouble hearing the vocals against the background.
Thanks, I got a very similar kit as a gift and wasn’t sure how it works!
I'm happy I could help :).
Me tooooo! I'm so excited to use mine now xD
@@JakKaos I'd love to hear how it goes! Just go ahead and dive in. The discovery is half the fun!

Such a simple and clear explanation of everything in this little case. I received one as a gift long ago and no one explained it like this. Awesome.
I'm so glad I was able to lend a hand! :)

Thanks for this! I got gifted these things outside of the original box so I had no idea what they were. Very helpful!
I'm glad I could lend a hand with them. Enjoy your calligraphy!

Thank you for sharing. Very informative; love the music and soft spoken approach.
Thank you :)
This is a pretty useful video for beginners.
thank you :)
Helpful video!!! Probably the only one 😭. Looking into buying a cheap set, but I have seen Rakuraku Seikatsu calligraphy sets.
There's definitely a lot of options out there, in a variety of price ranges.
I have had one of these for years, but would love to learn this. Relearn is probably more like it. Thank you.

wow did not know that big stone was a paperweight. i was about to try and grind it into ink lmao!!
Haha, I was about to go on a similar path of yours :-D
You would be grinding for a long, long time to try to get something useful out of the stone :).
Thank you for making this! It was informative and interesting!🙂

Please advise how and where to get this complete set of Chinese /Japanese calligraphy set with the ink stone/ stick altogether!

mine does not have paperweight...so I had to buy it separately
Every kit is different. Luckily, paperweights are pretty easy to come by.
