I bought a 2020 cherry SG Standard with the bat wing pickguard a few months ago. It was my fourth one and the most disappointing of the bunch - strings were dead, had too much relief and (sweat?) smears on the body. Easy to fix but terrible first impression, no "bond" off the bat. About half a turn on the truss rod, new strings and a little elbow grease with a wipe and the action is low, neck is flat and it rings. It's not unreasonable to expect more from a guitar at those prices, even with the Gibson QC gossip out there, but this guitar, used, is worth the minimal extra effort, IMO.
Nice Guitar. Just wanted you to look out for something. On at least half of the SGs I’ve played since 2020, on the G string between the 10th 11th and 12th Frets and sometimes the 13th fret, there are dead spots. As far as I know, there is no way to fix this. So if your Guitar has this issue you should return it and just keep looking for a good one. good luck and have fun.
I am so happy to have found you, I've only watched a few of your videos, but I will watch all you have . You are so for real and down to earth , you are my kind of guy. I would like to know your name and where your from, if your not comfortable with that it's no problem. Thank you

But that's just me - maybe I just had that bad of luck lol. Either way, luckily I have a closer dealer that services what he sells and really knows his stuff.

You got that one sorted out in short order. That truss rod nut is usually called an "acorn" nut. Gibson uses tailpieces and bridges from Advanced Plating. The bridges are stamped API. Fakes don't usually have a 1-piece neck. Also, for some reason they don't get the Gibson logo right--the slant is wrong. You're right; they're getting a lot of the more obvious details correct these days. Nice guitar!
I got the exact model in 2022 at GC. I tried it out and it was a player, highly resonate, “disappeared” in my hands and I was in love. Then I saw a small ding that cut through the finish on the headstocks left side next to the G in Gibson. I stayed in the store around 4 hours, long enough to talk staff into giving me an employee discount! I walked out with it for $1200, brand new. Took it to my luthier and the ding doesn’t comprise the integrity at all. It is my #1 because it just sings man and disappears in my hands. Point of the story is this: 1.) Don’t write off a guitar because it could be your soul mate 2.) Guitar Center will put a guitar up that warrants a discount and if you’re lucky it’ll take 4 hours to talk them into it and ONLY when they use their employee discount lmao.
Nice! I’ve managed to dial this one in fairly well so far . Had to tweak it a few more times since initial setup. I wish GC would give the mil discount on used stuff . They don’t though. Only new 👎🏻. Thanks for watching 🤘🏻

Man, I try not to buy guitars from GC too but I get tempted by the used wall from time to time too. Happened to me yesterday actually. I’ve given up on expecting any kind of care put into anything on the floor, and as long as they have a decent selection of quality parts I’ll grab as much as I can to fix little issues myself. Did that with the Jericho I snagged yesterday for a completely offensive steal (thank goodness most employees don’t know much, let alone about smaller brands like that). Last year I bought two different SG’s, one is an original Voodoo series and the other is the more recent “reissue”/tribute version - neither came from a GC. GC issues aside, I’ve noticed on SG’s in general that every individual tweaks them to their preference. 9 times out of 10 whatever has been done throws them WAY out of spec and honestly just astounds me that someone was able to play either one with the wonkiness I’ve seen between my two and years of friends buying them and me helping set them up or loaning tools for them to adjust their new finds. So I definitely agree that it’s shameful GC put yours out the way it was, but a whole bunch of ignorant SG buyers are honestly just as much to blame imo.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I’ve got it pretty much set up to my perfect specs now and I agree there’s no way that they could set it up to be perfect for everybody that walks in and plays it. I’ve never bought a guitar off the shelf, anywhere my entire life that that I just left and never adjusted in some capacity, however, very rarely do I go into a store to look at a guitar and I can’t even play the thing I’m sure a lot of people may be inexperienced. Probably passed on that SG because it had issues.

Great video. I understand your criticisms of both Gibson and GC. I work at GC as a Team Sales Lead (manager), so I can assure you that the bad setup comes from a number of factors: Gibson qc, environmental factors, in-store customers, overload workflow for our techs, etc. From your video it seems your local GC is a bit out of control haha. Our techs are supposed to always setup the higher end instruments (as opposed to Squiers and Epiphones) if they aren’t already from the manufacturer. Every now and then a guitar will slip through the cracks and will be a loud minority for how we operate. Usually if you tell a team member that a guitar on the wall desperately needs a setup, they will do it. I hope all is well with your SG!
